Nice work. Looks tricky to work where, as you said, there's corrosion everywhere. Seems like that will work well enough for carrying low-pressure irrigation water.

100% sure you are going to nail welding ali 👍 All the best and thanks for the video

That's as good as a repair as you could ask for with what you had to work with I think. That pipe was rough. It looked like the pipe was breathing!

An angle clamped on the back of the pipe will help
Just make sure it's at least twice as long as the patch

Clamp a decent length of angle iron 50x50x5mm or sim to the opposite side of where you were welding with it lookig like O> holding with a few clamps along the length of the tube
I used to tig ali weld for years in the Hvac industry and had all sorts of old used dirty bits we had to repair.
i enjoyed the challenge and we had a kemppi mastertig 300,awesome welding machine

I always like seeing the tooling of the guys abroad. Im surprized everytime i just see how readily available 220 is everywhere over there. Still strange that nobody has an engine drive welder or a full size truck lol. Cheers from Colorado USA keep on burning brother.

Nice job - would frighten the pants of me seeing the state of that pipe. Wonder why he just didn't replace with a plastic pipe

You could have used a 'strongback' made of 4" channel and chain grips to secure the channel to the bottom side of the pipe. This would have lessened the bowing and distortion. Let it cool and remove the channel (strongback).

My 2 cents, I would have payed the pipe in angle aluminum or in angle steel with some clamping. There are also chemical cleaners for aluminum, use them sparingly.

For the warping just make sure you have a few more pipe stands under the length. Especially where you are welding as it’s the weight of the pipe itself causing the bend. Good job mate 🤙

Tack the patch properly, make sure there are no gaps before you weld

Field welding corroded aluminum, pulsed MIG is the go. DCEP is 100% cleaning, and it eats out the corrosion like it's not even there.

so you had the machine balance in -30%, thats more penetration than cleaning, should have set it at +70%, that would leave a clean weld, also smaller cup size and more gas flow, because you are welding outside, but if it holds, the job is fine, grab and money and leave. :)

With the wear/corrosion in the pipe, maybe it would have been better to cut of the custom end sections & weld them onto a new length of Ali pipe - just subscribed as its good to see some genuine welding repair work.

If you run into this again what you do is you get a piece of straight steel angle iron put it underneath the pipe as a cradle strap it down so that way it will minimize how much movement you'll get in the aluminum

I wonder if doing your original idea of a full sleeve instead of half would have countered the distortion?
