Yup..it's 30 grams every ollie. Plus, he's saying 30 grams on an 8 inch truck..as you go up in size that gap widens to 50, and then indy regulars vs thunder hollow lights is closer to 70 grams (tactics.com)

Small amounts of weight make more of a difference when movement like rotation are in play. In cycling if you only have a little money to spend, one always should spend it on lighter wheels and tires to help acceleration. Just a little less weight at the tire(the farthest distance from the point of rotation) is noticeable and will improve rider performance. Likewise, a lighter truck will decrease the rotational weight of board that’s doing a tre flip. Better yet a lighter set of wheels like the radial slim or V3 vs. the conical full or v5 will also make a significant difference in the riders ability to flip and rotate the board. That also plays a big roll in why narrower trucks make tech tricks easier to learn. Wider trucks spread the weight out away from the center of the board making the weight of the wheels have a greater effect. Wanna test that theory? Put 139s on an 8.5 deck with the same wheelbase as an 8.0. Another example of rotation (dynamic ) weight in action is when you do flat ground 360s. Try holding your arms out and then bring them in close to your body. You can feel yourself spinning faster as you move the weight of your arms closer to the center of rotation. Nerdy nerd nerd.

The reason the hollows probably drag more on the kingpin is because you no longer only have an outside edge. It's now dragging on an inside edge as well because of the hole
Awesome review! I had Indy Hollows (149) and loved them! Recently switched back to Standards. They feel good! Definitely heavier than the hollows, so I opted for a smaller wheel to balance it out. My current setup feels great! However, I do feel like my legs are more tired at the end of a session on these standards compared to the hollows. 🤔

I weighed two of my set ups. First was 8.25 Element deck with indie titaniums - 2.4kg (5.3lbs), my super light setup was 8.0 Almost with Tensor maglite lows - 1.96kg (4.32lbs). That’s a huge difference! 1/5th less weight! I’m a super big fan of lightness, especially on 37 year old legs but there is sometimes a reassuring comfort with a heavier set up, you just have to put in the extra effort.
Thanks for the great skateboarding content. In the future it would be awesome if you could make a review video about impact plus decks. In my experience they are super stiff and are almost impossible to break while out skating.
I had one. The rod mullen impact plus (or impact light) 32x8,25" , with pretty steep (but long) nose and tail. awkward for manuals, felt a little heavy, even on tensor trucks, which shorten the wheelbase a bit. My first deck after more than 20 years of non-skateboarding. It was stiff, indeed, but with less flex than a powell flight with the same outer dimensions. This is why i switched the impact plus deck for the latter, which i still skate as my carving board. The mullen got my carpetboard, and it still is.
I like em. Especially on long wheelbase setups, they don't feel "too light" at all, just all the skating becomes more effortless, thus make longer sessions possible for the aged skater.

I started skating again at 41 after 27 years. I always ride 9 inch decks, I am a big guy. I went straight for my trusty Indys (169!!!), I couldn't ollie for shit....I literally could not lift the board consistently, I got massive ankle pain on my pop-foot...I changed to Avenues and they helped with the pop and the landings a great deal. Very gentle for my old ankles and knees. Not light, but because of the suspension they feel amazingly light, because they support the pop a lot. Then, I thought, well if I want regular trucks, maybe I should try a 9 inch, but really light setup. I got a Powell flight deck and Tensors 5.75 (which small enough, they still work great) and the setup just flies. I can ollie forever, one after another. I recently got Theeves TiAx, which are also on the light side and more suitable for 9 inch setup (6.5). Amazing difference comparing to my regular Indys. I will never return to heavy trucks. And another thing I noticed...With heavy trucks, it seemed I was crushing into the pavement on my landings whereas with light, the landings are far more gentle.
And they sound killer!!! I just bought my first pair, gave my standards to young skater in need. After about a week, I purchased another pair with a second full board set. I love them!

I haven’t even finished the video but DAMN those lines were amazing. Edit: I finished the video now. I have the 149 Forged hollows and I couldn’t agree more. My flip tricks felt amazing when I switched from standards to hollows. I didn’t think it would make that much of a difference but it is really noticeable. Plus, I really like the 53.5mm height. Also, I can’t help but think that you should work on a video part, all of the skating in this video is video part worthy.
I got the all polished silver venture low hollow lights (forged hollow base, axle, and king pin) and I prefer over them over my titanium versions. Definitely my favorite trucks and well worth it.

I put 159 hollow on my shaped deck. It rocks. I put the regs on my main deck . But I will try the 149 hollow or stay at 159 as I have two pairs of the hollow 139 which just isn't enough room all the way to grind. I get the best out of them by switching off thru out sessions. Just a ramble. The hollow s are a great thing I didn't know they existed until last year. I wish they existed when i was 15
i find they make a positive difference up to a point. i prefer the indy forged hollows to the standards cuz i like their weight and the lower axle hight. never tried titaniums. standard thunders are already a pretty light truck. i like the standards and the team lights, that just have the hollow kingpin. i tried a pair of thunder hollow lights, (forged baseplate, hollow kingpin, hollow axle) and put them on the same setup i was riding with team lights and everything felt off. the less weight seemed noticeable to me and i felt like i had no pop. i had a pair of old standard thunders and the baseplates were still good so i put the hangers from the hollow lights on standard base plates, then they were all good. i prefer the thunder gravity cast baseplate to the forged, the hight feels better to me. i suppose if i spent some time on a super light setup i could probably get use to it... i ride 149s and I'm 5'10, 135lbs, if this helps anyone.. love the vids Ben!!!
I recently went from 149 standards to 159 hollow and it’s the best switch ever since...yeah. Even though the truck is wider my set up feels lighter for all the reasons you listed.

I am a super heavy board kind of guy, 55mm konical wheels, 8.5 board with indies and skate rails, i even put bulky spacers on each wheel, im a little crazy on that matter, but i always carry a light board in case the situation requires it.

I thought having the lightest setup out there would give me an advantage for too long. I bought some 51mm wheels, a dlx brand deck and some thunder titanium lights. My board felt super light. Every 360flip ended in a 540 rotation but somehow, it felt worse than my heavier setup I rode before. I wanted to have high trucks (indy height) but the indy standards were too heavy for me. Everything felt sluggish and riding was really exhausting for me. NOW, I bought reynolds 139 hollows (both kingpin and axle are hollow but with the standard higher baseplate) and I finally found my perfect truck. Its as high as a indy standard but lighter than an indy standard. But its also not too light. This truck is perfect for me. So I can confirm that too light trucks make things worse (same goes for too heavy). You just need to find the truck weight that fits your style :) Awsome video, as always!
Indies have standard hollows and forged hollows. For some reason zumiez only sell independent standard hollows. Standard is 55mm tall and forged is 53.5mm tall.
Awsome video just as usual Ben , i´ve got a idea for you, do a video of how you motivate your self to skate so much when you´re almost always by yourself! Im about your age and starting to skate more and more now that im not injured anymore( more than ususal :P ) but i dont have the motivation to skate as often as i wish because its really hard to find friends to skate with now that you´re getting older and everybody has a job an family and such. So most of the time i skate by my self but its not that fun and i feel that im not pushing myself the same way that i do when im skating with friends. Love the channel and keep up the good work!
Like the feel of the hollow but the kingpin threads stripped easily, I put in some bones hard bushings and when I tightened the nut back to the kingpin it was stripped.
If you're testing light trucks, I'd love to see the Mini Logos tested. They're like 1/2 the price of the hollow Indys for a truck of nearly the same weight. I never thought I'd consider them, but a few people whose opinions I know and trust swear that they are a great truck, and it'd be fun to see a video on them.
Those are a great to spend 50 bucks! I have a set of 144's and they're great, tried them on a mini logo mellow concave 8.25 deck and on an 8.1 primitive.
I have two setups, both 8.5 decks. Setup 1 has Tensor trucks and Element 52mm wheels. Setup 2 has Indy 149s and 56mm Powell G-Slide (check those out) wheels. The setup with the 52mm wheels is about 1lb lighter, according to a super accurate (*sarcasm) bathroom scale, and it definitely feels lighter under my beginner-level feet. I still prefer the other setup, though. It's significantly faster on the streets.
The deck I'm currently rocking has kicks that are too steep for my liking.... maybe I'll give these a shot 🤔 Also, the lines and gap you did were sick and greatly appreciated 👍
Tensor Mag All Terrain's are cool but I like a heavy board. Plus they are really tall trucks 55mm now , people complained of too much wheelbite from the old versions.
On my 14in wheelbase, 7in tail, medium concave, Indy Forged Hollows, 54mm wheels I measured 8in from the tail to the point of contact of the wheel, and 17in from the wheel to the center of the front trucks (cg), so that would mean 17/8 mechanical advantage, meaning 30g would feel like "64g more" when starting the pop, which is not insignificant all things considered.
I noticed my kin pin hangs up a lot easier on smith with the hollows compared to my thunders 147’s but I also had to send my last set of hollows back because from landing off gaps and drops I stripped the kin pin right down where it folded the threads down and went to switch too bones bushings thinking then bushings were the problem and couldn’t get the nut back on the kin pin. But NHS sent me a brand new set of trucks to replace the one broken kin pin said it had been a common problem
Well my first board was a local brand 8.5 with a 149 indy a slightly used board gifted from my friend blahh blah blah.. I wasn't even aware and didn't even know about board sizes and weight of it.. After a years of skating those, when I finally needed a new setup.. I'm suprise that there are even more smaller size and even more lighter weight and bought myself an 8 inch deck with thunderlights.. At first I was having trouble catching my flips and Feel so VERYVERY light and I wasn't even really comfortable at all.
I have a thought! Try an Indy (or other company) standard base plate, but with a hollow truck (hangar/axle) and compare it to a standard and/or a hollow truck. You can also invert it with a hollow base plate and a standard truck (hangar/axle) and compare! Please?? 😁
I did the physics calculation for you. Based on a 32 inch deck. Mag lites vs indy regulars. 1.9 vs 2.7 POUNDS of force to pop the nose. Thats almost a full lb difference. W • x = F • y where W is the weight, X is distance from fulcum to tail, y is the distance from fulcrum to nose.
Oh, one more nerdy thing: forging affects the *microstructure* of the aluminum. Metals atoms don’t really form “molecules”, but instead they form crystalline domains called grains, and very frequently other elements of the alloy precipitate and form other types of domains. The size, shape, chemical composition and atomic arrangements of these domains determine the strength of the material.
Hi, interesting opinion. Did you ever consider putting Tensor Mag Lights on? They are much lighter compared to Indies, I would love to know how they work.
The concept of the weight of the truck multiplied by leverage is the same as that of the use of a torque wernch. 1" (inch) pound is equal to a pound of torque an inch away from the fulcrum point (obviously). That same pound 12" (inches) away from the fulcrum is equal to 12 pounds an inch away from the fulcrum point. That one pound is multiplied by the distance aka 1' (foot) pound because 12"(inches) =1'(foot). So if your truck is 30 grams lighter 14 inches away from the fulcrum 14×30 grams is how much lighter your truck feels. Of course the length of the tail is also a lever so that comes into the equation too. Hope this helped answer the question.
yes i do agree that independent trucks do not grind smooth on smiths, its actually almost impossible on specific sizes, what does grind perfect every time though is a good pair of thunder hollow lights, also i do believe they are lighter ever so slightly, and i think the new hollow light 2's are even lighter and forged

yes, i second that. my legs are 44 years old now, and then low weight and lighter feeling geometry makes even more difference.

Yeah landing feels like a cat jumping down from second floor to carpet. Same with wheels weight

i find they make a positive difference up to a point. i prefer the indy forged hollows to the standards cuz i like their weight and the lower axle hight. never tried titaniums. standard thunders are already a pretty light truck. i like the standards and the team lights, that just have the hollow kingpin. i tried a pair of thunder hollow lights, (forged baseplate, hollow kingpin, hollow axle) and put them on the same setup i was riding with team lights and everything felt off. the less weight seemed noticeable to me and i felt like i had no pop. i had a pair of old standard thunders and the baseplates were still good so i put the hangers from the hollow lights on standard base plates, then they were all good. i prefer the thunder gravity cast baseplate to the forged, the hight feels better to me. i suppose if i spent some time on a super light setup i could probably get use to it... i ride 149s and I'm 5'10, 135lbs, if this helps anyone.. love the vids Ben!!!
I recently went from 149 standards to 159 hollow and it’s the best switch ever since...yeah. Even though the truck is wider my set up feels lighter for all the reasons you listed.

I am a super heavy board kind of guy, 55mm konical wheels, 8.5 board with indies and skate rails, i even put bulky spacers on each wheel, im a little crazy on that matter, but i always carry a light board in case the situation requires it.

I thought having the lightest setup out there would give me an advantage for too long. I bought some 51mm wheels, a dlx brand deck and some thunder titanium lights. My board felt super light. Every 360flip ended in a 540 rotation but somehow, it felt worse than my heavier setup I rode before. I wanted to have high trucks (indy height) but the indy standards were too heavy for me. Everything felt sluggish and riding was really exhausting for me. NOW, I bought reynolds 139 hollows (both kingpin and axle are hollow but with the standard higher baseplate) and I finally found my perfect truck. Its as high as a indy standard but lighter than an indy standard. But its also not too light. This truck is perfect for me. So I can confirm that too light trucks make things worse (same goes for too heavy). You just need to find the truck weight that fits your style :) Awsome video, as always!
I agree about finding the goldilocks truck. I think I would like the Reynolds truck too.

Indies have standard hollows and forged hollows. For some reason zumiez only sell independent standard hollows. Standard is 55mm tall and forged is 53.5mm tall.

Awsome video just as usual Ben , i´ve got a idea for you, do a video of how you motivate your self to skate so much when you´re almost always by yourself! Im about your age and starting to skate more and more now that im not injured anymore( more than ususal :P ) but i dont have the motivation to skate as often as i wish because its really hard to find friends to skate with now that you´re getting older and everybody has a job an family and such. So most of the time i skate by my self but its not that fun and i feel that im not pushing myself the same way that i do when im skating with friends. Love the channel and keep up the good work!

Like the feel of the hollow but the kingpin threads stripped easily, I put in some bones hard bushings and when I tightened the nut back to the kingpin it was stripped.
Sounds as nut was putting on the angle into kingpin
If you're testing light trucks, I'd love to see the Mini Logos tested. They're like 1/2 the price of the hollow Indys for a truck of nearly the same weight. I never thought I'd consider them, but a few people whose opinions I know and trust swear that they are a great truck, and it'd be fun to see a video on them.

Those are a great to spend 50 bucks! I have a set of 144's and they're great, tried them on a mini logo mellow concave 8.25 deck and on an 8.1 primitive.
Id like to see you do a Tensor Mag Light review. Most of the reviews Ive found on them are years old. We need a fresh perspective!
I have two setups, both 8.5 decks. Setup 1 has Tensor trucks and Element 52mm wheels. Setup 2 has Indy 149s and 56mm Powell G-Slide (check those out) wheels. The setup with the 52mm wheels is about 1lb lighter, according to a super accurate (*sarcasm) bathroom scale, and it definitely feels lighter under my beginner-level feet. I still prefer the other setup, though. It's significantly faster on the streets.
The deck I'm currently rocking has kicks that are too steep for my liking.... maybe I'll give these a shot 🤔 Also, the lines and gap you did were sick and greatly appreciated 👍

Tensor Mag All Terrain's are cool but I like a heavy board. Plus they are really tall trucks 55mm now , people complained of too much wheelbite from the old versions.

On my 14in wheelbase, 7in tail, medium concave, Indy Forged Hollows, 54mm wheels I measured 8in from the tail to the point of contact of the wheel, and 17in from the wheel to the center of the front trucks (cg), so that would mean 17/8 mechanical advantage, meaning 30g would feel like "64g more" when starting the pop, which is not insignificant all things considered.

I noticed my kin pin hangs up a lot easier on smith with the hollows compared to my thunders 147’s but I also had to send my last set of hollows back because from landing off gaps and drops I stripped the kin pin right down where it folded the threads down and went to switch too bones bushings thinking then bushings were the problem and couldn’t get the nut back on the kin pin. But NHS sent me a brand new set of trucks to replace the one broken kin pin said it had been a common problem
Well my first board was a local brand 8.5 with a 149 indy a slightly used board gifted from my friend blahh blah blah.. I wasn't even aware and didn't even know about board sizes and weight of it.. After a years of skating those, when I finally needed a new setup.. I'm suprise that there are even more smaller size and even more lighter weight and bought myself an 8 inch deck with thunderlights.. At first I was having trouble catching my flips and Feel so VERYVERY light and I wasn't even really comfortable at all.
I have a thought! Try an Indy (or other company) standard base plate, but with a hollow truck (hangar/axle) and compare it to a standard and/or a hollow truck.
You can also invert it with a hollow base plate and a standard truck (hangar/axle) and compare! Please?? 😁

I did the physics calculation for you. Based on a 32 inch deck. Mag lites vs indy regulars. 1.9 vs 2.7 POUNDS of force to pop the nose. Thats almost a full lb difference. W • x = F • y where W is the weight, X is distance from fulcum to tail, y is the distance from fulcrum to nose.

Oh, one more nerdy thing: forging affects the *microstructure* of the aluminum. Metals atoms don’t really form “molecules”, but instead they form crystalline domains called grains, and very frequently other elements of the alloy precipitate and form other types of domains. The size, shape, chemical composition and atomic arrangements of these domains determine the strength of the material.
Any chance you'd be down to do a board length comparison? Like benefits of a skating shorter length board to one that's longer and vice versa 🙂

Hi, interesting opinion. Did you ever consider putting Tensor Mag Lights on? They are much lighter compared to Indies, I would love to know how they work.
The concept of the weight of the truck multiplied by leverage is the same as that of the use of a torque wernch. 1" (inch) pound is equal to a pound of torque an inch away from the fulcrum point (obviously). That same pound 12" (inches) away from the fulcrum is equal to 12 pounds an inch away from the fulcrum point. That one pound is multiplied by the distance aka 1' (foot) pound because 12"(inches) =1'(foot). So if your truck is 30 grams lighter 14 inches away from the fulcrum 14×30 grams is how much lighter your truck feels. Of course the length of the tail is also a lever so that comes into the equation too. Hope this helped answer the question.
yes i do agree that independent trucks do not grind smooth on smiths, its actually almost impossible on specific sizes, what does grind perfect every time though is a good pair of thunder hollow lights, also i do believe they are lighter ever so slightly, and i think the new hollow light 2's are even lighter and forged
