best way to achieve originality is by understanding the writing experiment where you task 2 writers to write the exact same thing by only telling them the genre and the story beats, and then see how different the result ends up being.. basically the point here is that 2 people have their own perspective on the exact same concept.. one sees a duck, the other sees a rabbit.. and by understanding this principal, and by keeping this in the back of your mind, you can basically write whatever you want without having to fear that it's "too similar" to other ideas.. because sure it may be a bit similar, but it was still your own twist on the pre-existing thing.. there's also the concept of looking at a movie and go "actually i wish it went a little more like this, or like that" and then take it from there... one of my stories is basically "i wish JoJo had an episode exploring this or that concept"

Charlie Kaufman in a BAFTA speech said that all a writer has is their own voice, and everything you ever connected with was just the voice of someone else - so effectively it's all you need to write something powerful. He said that in a more poetic way, though.

I feel like part of the problem how much influence the film industry has on today’s society. It’s like the writers are “creating” plots and characters based off past films where as in the past writers created their own stories and characters based on their own experiences as the film industry didn’t have the same type of influence as it does today.

If we really want "originality" as the audience, then we'd have to watch/read stories knowing there's a higher chance we will be challenged, lost, annoyed or bored. I think most audiences are not happy to spend their money/time and feel that way. There's a lot of 'original' ideas from the 50s, 60s, 70s that we could show in movie theaters today, but could the modern audience really tolerate them? I feel like audiences and studios mostly want the *illusion* of originality within a familiar marketable paradigm, and that can be really difficult to create.

There are currently over a million original scripts purchased from gifted screenwriters, and are locked away in studio vaults which have never seen the light of day. If studios can't come up with anything original, they can simply open their vaults and read the scripts they have. They are sitting on a gold mine in their own back yard, yet couldn't be bothered to dig.

No we dont; because its not just about the idea, its also about how well the idea is executed. Much of those problems you described stem from poor execution; and challenging the audience isnt a problem if its done for a genuinely good reason with basic emotional intelligence. As for those old movies, alot of those original ideas from old movies just were not executed well at all (and im not saying that "old = bad", because some of my favorite movies of all-time are from the 50s, 60s and 70s, like "12 Angry Men"; its just that alot of other original movies from the old days didnt make it to classic-status because they were so poorly edited, so its no wonder why they put people to sleep).
Whether a story-idea is original or not, a story is a story; there are certain, universal fundamentals that are required to have a cohesive story (and im not talking about the Hero's Journey); its the same way there are fundamentals to making a cohesive cake, regardless of how creative you get with the cake-size, the flavor, or the icing. If an original idea is written & edited cohesively enough on a scene-by-scene level, then it should not have those issues you described; original movies like "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", "Get Out", and "No Country for Old Men" are proof that original ideas will knock it out of the park *IF* they're well-executed, because excellent execution will always inspire good word-of-mouth marketing, and that word-of-mouth will inspire more people to see these original ideas. Thats why im subscribed to movie-reviewers like Jeremy Jahns and YMS because i trust theyll direct me to great movies.
Things dont have to be as bad as they are now; its just that much of Hollywood executives today are so out-of-touch that they're ignoring the fundamentals of good, simple storytelling so they can try to appease the "market-data" and shove in these inauthentic political messages that audiences can see right through. We gotta get back to the basics of the artform; the corporate executives need to stop micromanaging the art-direction, and they need to let the real artists control the writing & art-direction. The corporate people need to just stick to doing the accounting and the legal work or whatever, because art-direction is not their thing.

@@natesamadhi33 You need to make a distinction between what audiences *say* they want, and what they are prepared to spend money on seeing, because they aren't the same thing. Audiences claim they are tired of the mainstream movies they get (and undoubtedly most of them are) and they are not pulling in the numbers they were - but this is partly down to a change in viewing habits, cost of entry combined with a sharp rise in the cost of living.
No, not many people want Disney remakes anymore, and the early success was likely based on novelty of seeing something animated in live action combined with nostalgia, and the time when movie going was booming (with the soaring costs of ticket prices for 3D, big screens and IMAX). And yes, Disney's messaging is both off-putting and overt, which has cost them a large part of their audience. And that is part of my point; that movies used to let the audience think more for themselves and have a little more ambiguity, but that means they require some effort on the part of the audience. And the social media space that discusses art (and anything) has become more reactionary, polarised and hostile, because that is what gets attention. Most of the audience don't have a strong opinion either way on divisive movies, it's just the social media space (and the media) that make it appear that way.
Your three examples are well regarded movies, yeah. But they didn't really crush it at the box office. Partly that might be down to age rating, or release strategy. Certainly GET OUT made a lot compared to the budget and much more than the other two, probably down to being more recent and the rise in ticket prices, but it doesn't prove that audiences are craving "originality". These are outliers at best.
ETERNAL SUNSHINE was 74th on the 2004 Worldwide Box Office.
      NO COUNTRY was 32nd
      GET OUT was 37th.
Look at all the tripe above them that made more money. Some of that is down to genre and age rating, but a lot of those movies were less original and less well made.
Not wanting movies to be contrived, unimaginative, nostalgia bait or lecturing is not the same thing as wanting "originality". That's just wanting a competent movie that doesn't insult the audience, which is largely the bare minimum we should be entitled to (even if opinions are subjective and varied based on life experiences and values).
There are plenty of fairly conventional movies, with a hint of flair and vision that are lauded as great modern movies. THE MATRIX would be a good example. Aside from the slo-mo effects, there's nothing particularly "original" about it. It's just a very well made and well told story in a conventional blockbuster action genre. We don't get many blockbuster movies as compelling as that today. A 2024 mainstream audience could easily sit through that and enjoy themselves. They might even say it was "original". This is my point that most audiences want the illusion of originality, not original movies that they might feel were a waste of time/money by doing things they didn't anticpate.
I also completely disagree that "a lot of those original ideas from old movies just were not executed well". The movies of the 50s, 60s, 70s were much more likely to experiment and had stronger vision and voice (as a generalisation). I'm not talking about subjective opinion of what should or shouldn't happen in movies you think didn't quite work. I'm saying a modern audience (and by that I mean people who go to the movies, not cinephiles or artists) that complain about "originality" would likely get frustrated at actual "original" movies. They might have their own list of specific examples of movies that they did like from the past, but most of them are probably very formulaic with a few unexpected or niche concepts within them. Historically, movies that were bold and original didn't really appeal to the mass audience that much or that often.
The mainstream audience has been dumbed down by generic blockbusters and romcoms that them themselves happily gorged on for years. It's not surprising Hollywood is so cynical when so few paying customers are willing to challenge themselves and risk seeing something they don't like. And when they do review a movie they have seen on social media, they typically try to remove nuance and throw out the biggest pithy hot take they can for attention, or they have no strong opinion either way.
If mainstream audiences really craved "originality" they would be searching out original movies from the past on streaming and digital downloads and Hollywood would be paying attention. As it is, a niche audience subscribe to services like MUBI or BFI.
On a side note, I want to disagree with the assertion that a movie that doesn't achieve "classic-status" is "bad" or that audiences get to decide what is a "well executed" movie or not. Nearly every movie ever made is well executed. It may not have been popular because it did things the audience didn't expect (i.e. was outside of the formula) but that doesn't mean it was not "well executed". Execution comes down to intention. If I want to express my view of the world by having a dystopian thriller end with a head in a box at the end of the movie, and audiences don't like, it's not that I didn't "execute well" my vision. It's that audiences were divided on whether that was what they expected or desired. The artist has a duty to guide those expectations (through craft) but you won't please everyone, no matter what choice you make.

The movie audience for the most part this movie is horrible it sucked. But they still went to see it anyway because it was a Halloween movie with Michael Myers. As a filmmaker I tend to think originality tends to come from the combination of new models. For example, 'Frankenstein' was created by placing the Prometheus myth into the skin of Gothic literature and now 'Frankenstein', itself, is a model we refer to. However there are a couple of exceptions: one is if something new manifests in the real world. For example, the advent of the internet has opened up a multitude of new story opportunities and even a culture event can have that event. For example, the cold war inspired a unique spate of paranoid genre flicks like 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'. Another source of 'originality' is to keep a dream journal; the subconscious can often invent and associate at a level higher than the conscious mind. Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Northman, The Lighthouse) uses his dreams in his films and they wind up highly thought-provoking and creative.

Funny you bring up Frankenstein, Shelley was influenced by her own "modern" event of the time, specifically an experiment done in 1803 by Giovanni Aldini on the corpse of a recently executed George Forster. Where Aldini pumped electricity through the corpse and made it sit bolt upright. This had a profound effect on Shelley, inspiring her to write Frankenstein, which was published in 1818.
I think there's a lot of value in taking a new scientific discovery and using it to breath life into an older story or concept. Very Frankenstein-like indeed.

But the originality comes from how our brain connects these experiences. For example, I'm working on a project that has elements from LOTR, Lucifer (the show), Fruits Basket (the anime), Dororo (the anime), and a death metal song. It in no way "copies" these stories, but it is inspired by my feelings/ experience when processing moments from these sources.

    1) Create and release two versions of every film, one with the soundtrack and one without it.
    2) Release the same film, but with two or more directors doing their own versions of the screenplay.
    3) Ditto the above, but with different cinematographers.
    4) Ditto the above two, but with different actors (just the lead or leads, or even a bunch). This is very probably the least viable option for financial reasons.

And that it became the hit it turned out to be surprised the studio most of all. You’ll note that all the sequels were released in summer or end of year holiday. Spend your 150 million on marketing if you wish, but I'd suggest hiring better writers with that money. Marketing doesn't bring people into the theater. Original ideas in creative work do not exist. Focus on how your presentation makes what you've chosen to do more inviting to an audience. Brandon Sanderson says that storytelling is similar to putting on a magic show. Just worry about making yours the best it can be.

There’s much easier answer to this question. Most people can’t come up with an original idea because most people are not geniuses. It really takes an incredibly smart, talented person to come up with a completely original idea. And then, if you do come up with one… Are the studio people who are going to listen to your idea smart enough to understand that you’re bringing them something new. Most likely, no. The same way a songwriter can’t be John Lennon and Paul McCartney, screenwriter can’t always be Aaron Sorkin or Quentin Tarantino. And what about the old cliché that every story has been told, you just have to figure out a new way of doing it. Nothing original about another gangster movie until the Godfather came along. What makes that better and different than every other gangster movie in the world. or a western? Every western has been done until Unforgiven came along.

The more Art, yourself have been watching, or reading about or listening to, the changes of finding out instantly the similarities are increasing.
The past itself it is repeating in the present moment and for myself it is just ridiculous how frankly dumb are herd of people, while basically are carry on living within daily amnesia.

    * Edit,
The citizens who are grossly stealing ideas from others, have no respect for the previous work and no respect for the Artist.
Those who are stealing are pathetic in ways that even not realising how ridiculous, insane and criminal they really are, as they do not have their own personality and brain no longer well functional to think within, and so, stealing won't bothering them, anyway.
It is questionable in here and the answer it is included as well, of how come a person alike Hitler, back in the history, have been listened to.

If you mean people that go blindly to see every single movie. Like in the Halloween movie franchise with Michael Myers. Along with every single Scream movie an things like that that basically do the same things over an over again. Then yeas that's the problem the movie studios only reuse older movie IPS because. They have a built-in audience that will go see every single thing that is connected to that movie franchise. Without fail if it has the name Halloween or Scream attached to it they will go to see it or watch it. That is garentead money for the movie studio. So they do it for that reason.
I stopped doing that I stopped caring for the Scream movies after the 4th one. Because it was a good time to end that franchise. I stopped caring for the Halloween movie franchise as soon as I seen the beginning of the 5th movie.
If people keep demanding more of the same kind of movies thats all Hollywood will make. People need to stop doing that an only see new an original movies with original story's and original characters. Then Hollywood will lose money on the movies based on the older IPS . Then they may relise that they need to focus on new an original ideas an IPS and characters an storys.

No I think especially after the Pandemic. The film makers are very skiddish. They want Projects that are filmed in an Outhouse somewhere. All one setting silly easy to recreate Action scenes and Presto You make $100 million bucks over a $3 million dollar budget.. The Audience is in a higher tier of expectation. The big Studios can have Old Classic Cars for a film or Structures that look real where Indie's and the others can't or won't use those technologies because they have to pay some entity one heck of a lot of money. They want to cut costs anyway they can. There are tons and tons of great ideas for films.. It's just film people don't want to risk big budgets on them..

How do you market an original idea?
Gravel-voiced hyper-serious voice over: "In a world gone mad, one film studio decided to make a movie with an original idea. It's not ripping off some played out I.P. It's not a tedious rehash of something you've seen a thousand times before. And while it has elements common to all forms of story telling, they're not just another formulaic mishmash of predictable story beats haphazardly hammered into place by a producer who read one book on movie plots and thinks it's the Bible.
"And best of all, it's not connected to any extend universe, so you don't have to listen to geeks ruin it with their pointless bla bla bla before it's even released. Because geeks ruin everything.
"Coming this summer: An original movie from an original screenplay with an original story starring people who were cast based on their auditions and not their identities or politics, it's _Mad Dog: The Movie._ We won't even tell you what it's about. It's just a good movie that the test audiences enjoyed and we think you will too.
"This may be your last chance to enjoy the movie theater the way they were meant to be enjoyed: eating fistfuls of popcorn while watching a fun unpredictable story that you can argue with friends and family about after it's over. Don't wait to see it on streaming, because it just won't be the same."

This guy literally makes no sense at all does he even know what hes talking about. Because at the start of the video he says take ideas an things that work then add a twist. To it an its being creative then at the end of the video he says copying a idea an changing it into something else is uncreative. What does he think talking a idea that works then adding a twist is its literally and figuratively copying a idea then turning it into something else. So this means he clearly doesn't understand what being creative means. Because talking a idea an changing it can't be creative and non-creative at the same time. But he says it is in this video.
Then when it comes to the movie Talk to me. Just from the commercials alone an the same thing with the movie the Black Phone. I was able to figure out the movies step by step of what was going to happen in those movies. Then I was 100% correct so just copying the same movie ideas is not being really creative if you use the same movie formula. They are predictable an not scary because if you know the formula you know what is coming.
Then there is always room for original ideas an unlike what this guy thinks. People are willing to give new ideas a chance. People actually want new an original ideas an IPS. Its only Hollywood that is afraid of new an original ideas an IPS. Because they want to play it safe an they know that people will go to see things that are connected to older movie IPS. So its guaranteed money so the problem is not the movie audience. They want new an original movie IPS an storys. The problem is Hollywood they only want things connected to older movie IPS because they have built in audiences.
Then when it comes to using a older ideas you have to in your movie. Literally an figuratively throw out everything that everyone has did before you. Then do something completely new an different to be creative. Like Come Play 2020 did they went this is what everyone else is doing. With monster / supernatural movies we are going to do something completely different from the start.
This is why Damien Leone made Art the clown in the first place. Because he was tired of Hollywood doing the same things over an over again. With horror movies take a pre-existing slasher then change the background then call it a new movie that's not being creative. Then do that over and over again so Damien Leone said if Hollywood wouldn't make a new killer with a brand new story then I will do it myself. Then let's see more people talk about Art the clown an Terrifier 2016 an Terrifier 2 2022 then they talk about Halloween kills and Halloween ends. Why because Art is brand new and original an doesn't fallow the standard slasher movie rules.
So everything he says is wrong only the Hollywood movie studios don't like new an original ideas. But the actual movie going audience likes an wants new an original IPS an storys built from the ground up from scratch. That completely ignore what everyone else has done before.
He is giving the lazist advice just take what works then change it a little thats being creative. But then says talking something that works an changing it is not being creative. So this guy doesn't even understand what hes saying. Because he is saying one thing then saying what he just said is not the right way to do it. He is completely contradicting himself in this video. Its like someone standing in the rain and saying its not raining as its literally and figuratively raining.

    • @83shadow3
      @83shadow3 8 місяців тому

@@PPrexor-qk9vq I am talking about actually being creative since you didn't understand. The first time let me be more specific with examples. This is not being creative taking pre-existing IPS and characters an ideas.
Like for example one of the newer ones taking Leather Face then having him go through town an kill. People with a Chainsaw like in the newest one from Netflix. Those writers an directors didn't create the character of Leather Face or that world. They just made a movie by using the character of Leather Face then did a time skip. Then had him go around town killing people with a Chainsaw. That's not being creative in any way because they didn't create the character of Leather Face. They didn't create that world all they did was a time skip an change the setting where Leather Face kills people.
Then Scream 5,6,7 those writers an directors did not create that world or the costume that the killer wears. Some one else created all they did was go we like those movies. An this literally comes from the audio commentary an bonus features for the movie Scream 5. They said they liked the Scream movies so they took that idea an copied it. With new killers in the same custom as in all of the other Scream movies. Then keep the same world an just added new characters. That's it that's not being creative its literally and figuratively taking all of those other people's ideas from. All of the first 4 Scream movies an just adding new characters. They didn't create the custom or that world they just put new people into it. Like they did in Scream 6 an plan to in Scream 7. Thats not being creative being creative would mean creating a new custom an new world. For the new characters in their movies that would be being creative. Then they had no intention of honoring Wes Craven in Scream 5. On the audio commentary an bonus features they admit they it never crossed their minds. It only happened because one of the people that worked with Wes Craven on the other Scream movies. Said he would work on Scream 5 if they did it to honor Wes Craven.
Then the movie Talk to me they literally and figuratively. Did what ever single possession movie has did step by step. Step one someone comes into contact with a ghost or demon. Step 2 they get possessed by said ghost or demon. Step 3 they start to see things. Step 4 people end up hurt or dead or both. So they changed the means in wich they come into contact with the ghost or demon. Big deal the rest of it was the steps I stated step by step. That's not being creative its just changing one small detail but every single thing else remains the same. That's not being creative being creative would mean doing it completely different. Not fallowing the steps above.
Now let's look at people that where actually creative. Let's start with Damien Leone for example.
He was working on a idea for a killer clown for years from the ground up from scratch. He started with a short film in 2008 then a few years later a nother short film in 2011. Then he got lucky and was asked to make a movie in 2013. Then he took all those random idea for that character he made. Then formed a solid concept and story idea for that clown then raised the money an made. The movie Terrifier 2016 staring Art the clown a new an original character he made. All by himself from scratch from the ground up since 2008. That is called being creative because he didn't use any one else's work to make that character or world. He did all the work an time himself into creating the character an that world. He copied nothing from no one.
Then the movie Come Play the writers an directors seen what everyone else was doing. Then they made a short film that did the opposite of that. Then someone liked it an went to them an asked if they would like to make it into a full length movie.
Same thing with the movie Smile they made a short film. That did things differently from everyone else. Someone seen it an went would you like to make this into a full length movie.
That's just 3 examples of people creating brand new IPS an characters an worlds. From scratch from nothing from the ground up from start to finish. Without copying or using pre-existing characters or world. Thats what it means to be creative you take a simple idea. Then you literally and figuratively create a new world around it with all new an original characters. With a new story that has its own rules that are completely different from anyone else.
Damien Leone did it with Art the clown the simple idea a killer clown. He made an is making a unique killer with a unique story that has never been seen before. All from the ground up from nothing. It also breaks the basic formula.
Come Play a unique monster/supernatural movie. That has never been seen or told before all from the start from nothing. It also breaks the basic formula.
Smile new demon/ possession movie that is unique an has never been seen before. All built from the ground up from nothing. It also breaks the basic formula.
So you don't now where these movies are going until it gets there. These 3 examples are from actual creative people. Because they forged their own unique storys with new characters an new worlds that fallows. There own unique rules all from the ground up with one basic idea. One a killer clown one a monster movie an one a demon possession movie. That was the base idea then these writers created every single thing else around that idea. From the ground up from scratch from nothing. The characters the world's the storys the rules for those characters an worlds. They made them all up themselves from nothing. They base them off nothing these movies are all 100% unique that's why those people are creative.
Side note in the end credits for the movie Terrifier 2016. Damien Leone said something like in memory of Wes Craven and George Romero an one more horror movie writer and director. That passed away all on his own because he truly loves horror movies. No one had to make it part of their agreement to work on his movie. Like the one did for the movie Scream 5 that says that the writers an directors. Did not respect the Wes Craven enough where as Damien Leone automatically went to honor him in the end credits of his movie.
