I don’t know exactly what job I want in the film industry. I really love the idea over bringing an idea to life and sometimes like making my own ideas. I want to be the person that essentially creates the movie and really does bring the vision to life.

Hopefully I’ll see you at the top with me as celebrities and be proud of our accomplishments we wanted and succeeded, I’ll see you on the red carpet.

Always keep in mind that filmmaking is an artistic endeavour. There are a lot of filmmakers who are better than you. But don't be scared by them, and don't compare your work to theirs; instead, learn from it. The most important filmmaking lesson I've learnt is this: "It's only in comparison to what you've done before. What you create does not have to be better than what others create, but it must be better than what you previously created." Keep this in mind and you'll always be motivated. :)
Great topic and well stated point. However, the reason for titles such as Director of Photography, Casting Director, Art Director, etc. is because there are people below them. The Director can say “I don’t like the shadows on the face”, but it’s up to the DP to relay to his/her department to get that situated. That’s like saying Jeff Bezos is directly in charge of each employee at Amazon.
I agree with what is said in the video. As you know there’s a whole lot of ego floating around on set - and it’s rare to find a talented cinematographer who understands that his job is to serve the directors vision - not his or her own.

This answered a lot of questions for me. I always wondered why films seemed to be considered a creation of the director. I always thought "well, if the script poorly written, isnt that the scriptwriters fault?" While I suppose thats partially a 'yes', the director still had to gove it the thumbs up.
As Director it's in my opinion important to place your actors at ease, find their strengths and exploi... Use those. Listen to ideas and say , you know, "Ok, we'll shoot that as well, , we'll do the screenplay version first and your suggestion afterwards, I like it, different angle." Then shoot both, and later in post throw the suggested version in the *%:>:@ing trash! j/k.
im thinking about going over into the film industry, and i think i want to direct. im not sure if i understand what that would entail. from my understanding, a director gets the idea for the film, gets a scriptwriter to make it into a script, then gets a producer to handle the money and schedule and stuff, then gets actors and all the things that tag alongside that, then overlooks all the filmmaking stuff as it starts production and post-production. right? do directors have to do most of the other stuff like filming and sound and producing and stuff if it is a small budget film? i want to know exactly what i am getting into.

@crimson Engine, What About The Animation Movie, Does The Director Make Decisions Of What Kind Of Story Ideas We Should Use, What Kind Of Storyboard Ideas We Should Use, What Kind Of Script We Should Use, What Kind Of Music We Should Use, What Kind Of Animation, Graphics, Design And Editing We Should Use Too?
Just a teenager and i've been obsessed with movie since the first time I watch it. I found that movie is so interesting, it could make you feel something through the cinematography, sound design, acting, lines, and any aspect from it. It's fascinating. I've been dreaming to work in a film industry, maybe to be a director? My passion is to make people feel and understand about my thoughts through my movie, like i always do. I always imagine that i could make people see what i see. But sometimes i think that maybe i aint gonna be good enough to work at this industry, maybe my dream is just a dream and it's too high to achieve, Maybe i need a 'realistic' dreams to hold into bc i cant see myself to be working in this industry, it just doesn't seems ti be happen. But i cant lie to myself, i looooove movie. For rn i can only wait to see what will happen later
I'm also a film director. This is a great video and a good insight into the film industry. I mainly direct tv commercials and I'm willing to answer those who are curious about the industry. See you on the other side :)
not too sure what i want to be. I am going to go to uni in September and am not too sure what course to apply for, or even go to uni? I know that covid has messed up the whole industry, so do you think it would be better for me to just get straight into the industry? Or go to uni for 4 years and come out with 56k in debt?
Thank you! 😃I'm about to hire a co-Director but I have to be the one in the control seat in the end of all decisions - your video was very helpful - Thank you!
His comment on the role of the DP is understated. The relationship between a director and his or her DP is a deeply collaborative one and often spans multiple films. The title of Director of Photography is fully recognized by today’s industry and should not be undermined.
Fully recognized by today's DPs maybe :) Every cinematographer knows they're not 'directing' the photography and more than the casting director is 'directing' the casting. The facilitating what the directing is asking for, and trying to bring their vision to life.
@@Crimsonengine The role of DOP is a quite ambigious to explain in my opinion as there are directors who will let the DOP do thier thing on how they want to place the lights to get mood director want because of course they know more about camera work and how lighting works in most cases... and in a way that is directing the photography but yeah the final call is of the director
So my question is am i the director or the artist? I have worked with a local artist on a small budget music video . The artist is the one who came up with the overall concept like "oh i want to do this song, i want it to be on the beach with me wearing a gown". But i am the one who came up with all the different scenes, whats supposed to be there in the intro, whats in the chorus, 2nd verse and so forth and the set decor in each scene. I also research all the looks and fashion and create mood boards. But since i cannot make the decision alone i definitely have to consult the artist from time to time to see if shes comfortable with everything or if there's something she wants to tweak here and there. And she does tweaked here and there because she has a vision in her head as well. I guided the camerman on the angles thoughout the shoot and make suggestions regarding the lighting tosuit her face since she can't obviously see herself while performing. I am also there 100% of the time guiding the artist in her movement and face and so forth. I also physically help the crew build the set since its a small budget video. I was there in the editing room (several times) deciding on the cuts etc. with the artist sitting there as well. But the artist wants to be the director. She was the one who first came up with the principal idea of how the overall vibe and im the one who filled all the blanks. I found the location but she aslo was searching for locations as well. So whos the director in this situation?
peace 2 u Crimson Engine, can you guys do one of these videos for Cinematographer, Casting Director, Production Assistant, and everything else on a movie set? If y'all feel inspired to do so. Thanks for this video and the producer video, too.
I think it depends on lighting, stuff is added in editing and then some lights are just added in during production on set. This is just my guess by the way but I’m pretty sure I’m right.
I don't agree with the statement that a cinematographer is essentially the director if the director trusts them with creative control of the camera. The job of director on a film set was traditionally an actor/performance focused roll. Many directors forget this and get absorbed in technicalities and trying to get cool shots. Getting a great, believable performance from the actors is much more important than camera placement.
I just finished my first semester in college, I'm 26 & started college pretty late. I've always doubted myself thanks to my social anxiety but it has been my absolute dream to be a film director since I was in elementary school. My main concern however is that I'm afraid I'm not a great storyteller & not that creative. Should I be right to be worried? Is there anything I can do to fix this? My greatest wish is to become the next Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, or James Cameron but I find it all too intimidating & overwhelming
Just start learning and practicing. I guarantee you there are successful directors weirder than both you and I :) It just comes down to who has the passion to keep after it.
At the end of every movie, there is a credit called "casting" usually the name of a company. If the director does the casting, what are casting directors for, and what about the credits given these companies?
Casting directors typically do the preliminary casting call and narrow down the thousands of potential actors for a role into less than a dozen that the director will watch or meet. Since the director has the most power on set, other crew members like to add 'director' to their title, like casting director or director of photography, but its just for status. There is only one real director on a film.
Can you make a video expo the different love between a cinematographer and Director of Photography and a Filmmaker? Even if it’s just a text reply. And also the rankings
If I become a director Do I get to decide how to depict a scene? There can be infinite ways on how to depict a scene. Do I get to choose according to my feeling an vision.
Hello. I am 14 years old and I want to be a director and an actress at the same time and I love photographing. So what should I study more in school? and what should I do to practice at home ?
If I were in your position, I would start by doing theater at your school or if you have a local theater, get involved in that. I would also take any film classes that are offered at your school, if any. You can also start researching cinematography and practicing taking videos any time you see an opportunity
The director completes a lot of pre production paper work. Essentially the director plans out the whole shoot sometimes with and sometimes without the help of a producer or cinematographer. Then if the Director is good, he enjoys drinking a lot of coffee whilst the crew get on with it and shoot the film on set. Everyone should know exactly what they are doing on set and should be made well aware if the tasks at hand, if the director is good. On low budget shoots you don’t hire many if any head of departments and often have to do multiple production roles yourself.
this helped alot me and my dad are starting to make our own horrer movie and im the director and im only 11 and my dad is my agent and i didnt know what i do but this helped alot tysm!!
Shame you failed to mention director's having to keep in mind the budget. They can't do infinite amount of retakes. Maybe there's a timeline or the actor has other schedules etc. Wished you went deeper in to that side of things.

Great idea! Will do
@crimson Engine, What About The Animation Movie, Does The Director Make Decisions Of What Kind Of Story Ideas We Should Use, What Kind Of Storyboard Ideas We Should Use, What Kind Of Script We Should Use, What Kind Of Music We Should Use, What Kind Of Animation, Graphics, Design And Editing We Should Use Too?
This is a fantastic video of what does the director do.
Enjoyed the video . Quite informative . Thank you .
Wonderful explain ❤
a big support from my side sir..love ur content.
I think the editor is the hidden creator of a film.
Really informative and inspirational. Thank you!
I'm also a film director. This is a great video and a good insight into the film industry. I mainly direct tv commercials and I'm willing to answer those who are curious about the industry. See you on the other side :)
How much schooling did you do?
@@trashratz2575 For film? I majored in fine arts and have been a commercial film director for over 10years.
How can I reach you?
@@JOHNPAULOKAFOR visit my channel. All the info is there to reach me :)
Hi! How widely different is T.V commercial to film making?
This sounds right up my alley.
not too sure what i want to be. I am going to go to uni in September and am not too sure what course to apply for, or even go to uni? I know that covid has messed up the whole industry, so do you think it would be better for me to just get straight into the industry? Or go to uni for 4 years and come out with 56k in debt?
I can’t wait to do this
The director is also a psychologist and above all the problemsolver on set.
I would really love if you keep this channel going I'm interested and would be extremely disappointed if you stopped
My stomach does flip flops for the future. A good kind of flip flop.
this is really useful thank you
So I can use this tips for direction a short movies
Being a film maker is what I’ve always wanted but I really don’t know how to fight that with my family, they hate the fact that I want to be on camera
Do it ❤
Bro do what you want, you can't let no one hold u back from your dreams
I really have to say it, this really helped me thankyou!
Can you be a writer and a director at the same time? I want to be a director but I got all these ideas in my head and I really want to make it right.
Sometimes the directors do come up with the story then hire and screenwriter/script writer :)
@@cCiinne That's a relief! Thank you so much

This is great info. Thank you
Thank you!👍🏻
peace 2 u Crimson Engine, can you guys do one of these videos for Cinematographer, Casting Director, Production Assistant, and everything else on a movie set? If y'all feel inspired to do so. Thanks for this video and the producer video, too.
Thats a great idea James. Thanks!
What about gaffer? I wonder why there is no "director of lighting" in movie.
Hi I have a question. Does a director has to be first an expert in an other nieche ability like cinematography, pd, writer etc. Thank you
Some are, but it's not a requirement. Some people 'climb the ladder' and others are directors from day one.
@@Crimsonengine Thanks for that answer!
Can you make a video expo the different love between a cinematographer and Director of Photography and a Filmmaker? Even if it’s just a text reply. And also the rankings
great idea
If I become a director Do I get to decide how to depict a scene? There can be infinite ways on how to depict a scene. Do I get to choose according to my feeling an vision.
It honestly sounds like a lot of work
Does the director give entire script to DP or just shot list?
So basically director is the leader of filmmaking
I really wanna go to America and become a movie director,,,
After watching so many great hollywood movies out there
I intend on attending full sail to major in film directing I plan on changing the game in a big way
this helped alot me and my dad are starting to make our own horrer movie and im the director and im only 11 and my dad is my agent and i didnt know what i do but this helped alot tysm!!

This is my dream job since I was 10. I'm considering studying this. Does someone know good universities about that in Europe?
omg samee
Directors also must have their webcam be cinematic
Shame you failed to mention director's having to keep in mind the budget. They can't do infinite amount of retakes. Maybe there's a timeline or the actor has other schedules etc. Wished you went deeper in to that side of things.
I'm young 16 years old boy who's also interested in being a director ☺
same man; not really into using cameras but i wanna make the scenes tell actors to use dialogue and use my imagination
I am 11 y.o
Same but i'm a girl
What did you say? Collaborative directors like the Cohens or like the ... then you are making those decisions together?
I am making a movie though piece by piece the Cast and the Plot but who should i get an interview by the producer or director for my movie idea?
Pls can I go in your actors I can really act if already thought of a movie
