- The drain in the cowl vent on the hood of your Jeep Wrangler can become clogged with debris. When this overflows it can leak into and under the dash. In this video, I show an easy way to keep this drain clean!

Thanks for watching JeepSolid. I am not a certified mechanic, just a hobbyist who enjoys working on Jeeps. - Авто та транспорт
Great video with very helpful information. That said, I found a much simpler remedy. I found the drain hose clamped to the cowl under the hood and removed it. The clamp holding it on was easily squeezed open by hand. Once I removed the hose, I took it to my shop sink and ran water through it to clear out the built up gunk. Then I put the drain hose back in the same way I took it out. I then tested it out by pouring a some water directly into the cowl vent. The water drained directly under my Jeep. I also checked the interior where the water would leak. Nothing. Dry as a bone. Easy peasy!
I’ve been reading about this water leak issue on some Jeep forums today, so I could fix my own leak issue. Being a visual learner, your video helped me out tremendously! Thank you!
Thank you Sir. I just purchased my decades long dream yesterday, it was raining. U guessed it...all over foot, First thing in morning wearing flaps. Lol. Can't wait to get started. Thank you for your videos. Helped me pick out what I believe to be my new family member! Love Your vids and demeanor. No nonsense or posturing- JUST GOOD ADVICE! THANK YOU
Thanks dude. I hate starting the day off with a cold, juicy foot!
Awesome video! If I may,I would suggest simply removing the hose for the vent from the firewall that way you can clean it thoroughly. Also as a permanent fix I cut a inch or so off the hose so leafs and sticks cant get stuck at the bottom.
+racingredneck Great tip. Thx! First time I ran a tube brush down it, I pulled out a big ole banana slug of mud! lol
I did this never had any more problems
great video. im having this problem for 2 years. Thanks for the recommendations
Living in a tropical country and not knowing this tip has been the demise of my carpets!
thank you so much!!!
+Tavo Vargas S May your feet stay dry!
Nice to know! A cowl cover is available and looks cool!
Great! Good to know this area is the cause for floor board leaks.
Thanks for this video. I knew it was the cowl vent but wasn't sure how to clean it out. I find your vids the most helpful.
+Daniel Arevalo Glad they help you out. Thank you for watching!
+JeepSolid BTW Nice Jurassic Jeep you have there!
+JeepSolid thank you! I've been able to do most all maintenance on it with just my chiltons manual and your videos. Keep the vids coming!
Thanks bro!
What did the brush pull out, anything specific?
I can get to mine inside my engine bay next to the firewall. Thanks I've always wondered what that tube was
Another great video!! Thanks brother!
Nice video. Simple solution to a common problem. Thanks
+3hdninja Always a pleasure Ninja
I have a 1996 grand cherokee. Does this work the same ?
Thank you
great tip Man
Do you have any videos on if it’s a windshield leak? Because I’m having the same problem with my Jeep. I’m going to try this method you did on the cowl vent. But I did notice that my black rubber strip at the bottom of the windshield has dry rotted
thanks so much!
Is there a video on how to clear the drain on a 2007 Jk Unlimited?
beautiful Clarke..... beautiful
+Holice Meeks "Fixed the newel post!"
Who sells the replacement hose?
👍
That is a good suggestion 👍🏻👍🏻
What caliber of brush is that? 1 inch? 1.5 inch?
My 1977 JEEP CJ7 has the drain for the cowl, draining straight down (on the Inside of the firewall)...not into the engine compartment. So... it also seems to drain into a larger apparatus... (not the heater box) what is this apparatus that sits above the long/wide heater box.... and can I attack my cowl drain with a drill & a tube, and "Make It'" drain into the engine compartment instead.??
Help. I've got a leak on passenger side up above your feet. It's coming from my windshield sprayer. It's not connected to the spray nossels. I can't find this rubber hose and how to connect it back to nossels
a problem with the drain tube is the pinch on the bottom of the tube (to keep debris from going up the tube?) age makes the pliable tube hard so it won't flex open enough to let debris flow out, easy fix, cut the pinched end off, now the water and crap just flows out. this fix causes NO issues at all . the owners of old YJ's around here do this fix, I followed their lead.... works great, anyway that's my 2-cent fix.......happy jeeping
Good video. Thanks
Thanks, and thanks for watching!
Tx man, you just give me the reason why my feet gone wet and the solution....
Any suggestions for a 2015 JKU water dripping from blower motor after hard rain or car wash
There is a foam gasket there that you can replace. It’s a royal pain to change but I did mine while I was replacing the heater core so it was a two’fer.
Brilliant. I never knew about this drain!
Question: I notice there’s a big hole on the passenger side, does that empty into the cabin? Is that where you get the “dump”? I assume that’s where the air comes into the vehicle...
Yeah, I believe that's where it spills over.
I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty just noticed that the passenger side from under the dash on back was soaked. Wonder if this could be the same problem.
Probably! It’s an easy fix, worth a try
would it be beneficial to put a hood scoop backwards? or does there have to be open?
nice vid by the way thank you love how u ONLY show wrangler. me and my YJ appreciate it
+Isaac Salinas Some people add a scoop facing backward and it works fine for them. Keeps some debit out and gets enough airflow off the windshield.
I routinely unclog the drain, and have even taken off the drain sock but water still gets in through the cowl
Whats is the purpose of the cowl vent? Does it bring air into the engine compartment?
It provides air to the interior for the fresh air vent and heating system
I've had water come in on the passengers side during rain. Could this be the same problem? Any other suggestions for trouble shooting? Thanks!
+Jimmy T Definitely could be. It'd be worth cleaning out the drain. Some people also have issue with windshield leaking.
+JeepSolid how i can repair the issue with windshield leak?
Doesn't that drain hang down from the back of the heat shield and down that tube? Pretty sure it just pulls off for cleaning.
My question is how the water goes from the cowl vent into the back of the firewall and into the jeep and on the floor. It seems like it would need to go up and back then down to get into my jeep. This actually doesn't make sense to me in any way. It would be like a floor board drain that puts water in the glove box.
Yeah. It seems like a design flaw to me, but when that drain is plugged, it fills up the vent and overflows into the cab intake.
I had to remove my carpets because of this. I haven't checked my fowl but I just know this is the issue.
Mine isn't clogged but I still get lots of dripping in a heavy rain.
Does anyone know why that vent is there? it seems useless but i could be wrong. I own a 95 wrangler :D
It brings in fresh air for the cab. kinda seems like a bad design, huh?
May I suggest rather than using a brush and wire to clean it out, put your shop vac on reverse and blow air through the pipe and blow the debris out. Quick and easy
There's supposed to be a screen there??!! Never knew.
Use weedeater line next time it works better
I had to replace the floor in my driverside because of it.
Sploush !
if its clogged how does it leak? lol
bajabilly2004 I think the rain water backs up so high, that it comes through the vent that is meant for air, the fresh air for the passengers cabin.
Just take the tube off the fire wall much easier
cut the tip of the tube so you wont do it every 6 month
I have a similar problem on my 2008 JKU. I have a video on my channel. Will literally paypal money to anyone who can figure it out.
Saw your video. That's a good leak! Look for the drain from the cowl vent under hood coming out of the firewall.
Should be a rubber tube coming out of the firewall that runs down
engine compartment. May be able to unplug it by just squeezing the
tube, or may need to flush with compressed air.
When I take the cowl cover off there is no drain to be found :|
Did you look under the hood? Coming out of the firewall.
Yeah, the JK model is very different.
I wish people would add. Xj, yj, zj etc to the titles so ppl don't waste their time.
Sorry if it wasted your time, but many of the jobs are similar on the different models. I usually indicate the specific vehicle in the description.
IBJeepin 94 if you couldn’t distinguish that was a Wrangler you don’t deserve to own a Jeep. After hitting play you should’ve immediately knowing it was a Wrangler and quit watching. SMH
