It's really common for guitarists to think they need more distortion than they actually do. Even the heaviest bands probably use less distortion than the average bedroom rocker. Also run a tube screamer type pedal into a noise gate, then into your amp and turn on the overdrive on the amp. Turn the gain down and the volume up on the pedal and use the gain on the amp to dial in adequate distortion. That's how I do it. I'm running a joyo bantamp zombie (it's supposed to sound kinda like mesa boogie) and a cheap overdrive pedal and I get pretty good results

For anyone that wants to know, Ground hum can be reduced if you know electronics! First check your guitars wiring, caps etc. Direct solider your ground leads to your potentiometer's Heat shrink as much bare metal as you can, use good quality pickups (Anything with wind information is a good start) get pickups that tell you how there wound, its a simple way of knowing that they were made for reason. Check your jack!!! Jacks are usually the main problem for ground hum, Contact is everything, Make sure your cable end is getting perfect contact with the inside of your jack, unscrew the jack and plug in the cable, is is touching the right spots? Is there gaps? If there is gaps, close them, no harm in re bending the contact points. And remember, don't use a guitar cable you don't need, if your going to an amp with no gate, or a PC connection make sure to keep your cables the length you need, with any cables that are excessively long you'll end up with hum, if your sitting still close to your amp, you don't need a 35ft cable. Your not on stage. And if you were on stage you would be using the correct equipment re reduce any noise you don't intend to make.

Depends. I love a lot of the garage/psych bands like The Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Fuzz, CFM, Naked Giants. Those bands utilize feedback quite alot and it sounds badass.

@@freewayross4736 actually I was quoting the late great Dimebag when I went backstage and partied with them. He brought a guitar that someone won off a radio contest or something like that but this guy tried showing off and was playing one of their songs and that’s close to what he said he actually said you can be the best technically sound guitarist but if you don’t have any soul in it then you’re just playing with it, as he pointed to his private area. So you can take that and put it in your pipe and smoke it because I was only commenting not trying to be a DICK like your trying to make it sound

If you hear this, do two things.....first make sure your gain or gains aren't too high....every metal guitarist I think goes through that phase, don't need a ton of gain, or bass for a guitar to sound heavy.....if that's not your problem, check cables, pedals, and finally actual connections whether it be guitar, amp, or pedal

Noise reduction does wonders for distortion along with setting up a mixer or if you lack a mixer toning the amp and any pedals you use to give less static and feedback. However, i still enjoy the local shows where gain and treble are at 10 and you leave with tinnitus, a headache, and multiple bruises.,😅

Dimebag's dad, Jerry, said that Dimebag liked to create music that people would air guitar to with a groove. Out of the many musician deaths, I think that Dimebag's death was the worst. Was he a rarity in Metal and he just kept topping himself and he kept contributing tabs to Guitar World. He was a hell of a guy to the fans and would treat you like family. When I hear someone play Pantera songs on the guitar, I think about what Dime might have gone onto as he got older. Maybe an acoustic guitar set and some singing ? Who knows. He definitely still had ammunition ready for more amazing electric guitar work. He had countless plans for Dean guitars and gear. His unfortunate death caused a huge rift that never could be mended.

Live, practicing with a band or recording this isnt really a big issue since when your guitar is super freaking loud then you need less gain to sound great.
At home however at low volumes people will crank that gain to somehow sound at least somewhat metal…
