  • The ALL NEW Catrike eCAT system pedal assist system! We received our first ever eCAT and we have been trying it out here at the shop. Catrike opted for the Bosch Active Line Plus motor that has four different pedal assist modes: Eco, Tour, Sport and Turbo. The motor is really well integrated into the Catrike boom and the system is easy to set up and operate. Cost of the motor is $2600 when you purchase a new Catrike model. If you want to install an eCAT kit onto a Catrike that you already own, the cost is $2750.
This system uses a torque sensor so it feels natural as you pedal and it's so quiet you won't even notice it's there. For riders looking to add a little extra power to their ride, the eCAT system delivers smooth and consistent pedal assist that will aid on quick commutes or long tours.
The new eCAT is set up with an 11-speed drivetrain to compensate for some gearing loss. If you install the eCAT system on a trike you already own, you might lose some ability to climb hills.

I have an old Catrike Expedition, with an E assist Bionx rear drive and a 9 gear rear cassette with a pinion 9 gear front gear box. 9x9 x 4 + overdrive mode. That’s right 324 gear options, + an overdrive. I only use the assist on hills, or passing a younger rider; I’m 69, lolol and looking forward to 60. To 100 mile days. Love your posts.

I just got to test ride one of these on a Dumont. Awesome trike. The full suspension is like riding in your car comfortable. The Bosch motor is crazy simple, two revolutions and I was rolling 15mph, and pulling 20mph with little effort. Easier than riding my Trek 5200. With the motor off it wasn’t any harder than riding my bike. Even up hill it was a breeze. With the motor on, hills are nonexistent. Can’t wait for the shop to get one I can buy.

Great vid! I'm a total Kait fan! She is an effective spokesperson. I like how the vid included a number of Utah Trikes "characters". Honestly pleased my all of my interactions with Utah trikes. Bought an expedition with Bafang motor last year. Loving it. These catrikes are not cheap, but they are of superior quality. I've never regretted my purchase. Maybe someday I'll get out to Utah to see the shop.

Kate - Great, fun videos as always! if I pass thru (from Arizona) and drop by Utah Trikes, would the team be able to install a pedal-assist motor on a Catrike Trail I purchased this past October 2022? The Bosch looks great but losing the 3 front chainrings & gearing I have and not getting the 11 gear cassette would be a drag. The Rouloff (sp?) hub would be the next step for the future.. Also the video (and pricing?) was from July 2020 - is the pricing close to the $2,750 mentioned in the video?

I'm there with you on the bad knees. You'll probably want something with more power for those hills. I ride a fat bike with a BBSHD installed (1500 max watts), running a 46 tooth front ring and a 14-34 in the rear. She'll climb a 9% grade with no problem, whether using pedal-assist or throttle.

FYI... Recently ran across you channel and I'm a noob...
Building a stealth camper / toy hauler and was thinking an electric quad would be a good addition to get around with rather than my motorcycle, since I'm installing a 3,600 watt solar array on top of my stealth camper. (It's a 26' box truck.)
So after seeing some of the stuff you have built, I went over to your site and tried finding what you had shown, or for that matter trying to build one from the site from what I saw in the video... So I could get an idea on what it was going to fully cost...
And once there, I had no clue on what was what and why would I want one thing over another...
Thought the Hot Rod quad looked cool, but couldn't find it on the site...
So I decided on seeing what it would cost for something else...
After googling things like the front / rear gearing, idler kits, different light options, etc...
    And then I noticed...
Bafang 850C Color display with selector switch $56.00
Bafang 850C Color display with selector switch $71.00
Then I finally clicked on the "details" link...
Which should be more clearly marked, I assumed it was a site error at first or a weird running total, because I wasn't at a full screen, I was at a tablet sized screen on my desktop. I had 3 other windows open. Your site, UA-cam with your video and google to look things up.
    Then I saw...
Color options with missing swatch colors.
Discontinued / out indefinitely / very limited items listed. (You need inventory integration on the site. Customers don't like things to be dangled in front of their face and then be told you can't have that, or they order it and get a call... "well, we don't have any more" or "they are back ordered, and it will be weeks before we can get any more")
    Items missing pics.
Items with no pics. (One described as "fat, but not too fat" Wow.. how descriptive... that tells me a lot... Since "fat" is in the eye of the beholder... ;) If you catch my drift...)
At that point my brain was fried and my eyes were glazed over...
And I gave up... for now...
I design eCommerce sites for a living... Been doing it for going on 21 years... But I have been "playing" with computers since 1974... Your site needs some serious work...
Dump Cold Fusion... It used to be a good platform until Allaire was bought out by Macromedia (made it worse) then Adobe bought out Macromedia and then it got really bad.
Last time I used Cold Fusion was for a shopping site for one of the top three search engines back in 2000. Then in 2002 when they changed the servers and coding to JRE, I dumped it for PHP and recoded the whole shopping cart site from scratch to match.
And get rid of Perl... too slow... Probably okay for your site, but get rid of it anyway...
And no... I'm not available... I'm semi retired...

The manufacturer clearly thinks very highly of their product. As in, their pricing reminds me of the old Farside cartoon where two spiders have created a web at the bottom of a kiddie slide, the caption being something like "If we pull this off we'll eat like kings".

I'm pretty much a complete novice with regards to trikes, having only trial rode the early Greenspeed and Trice, but can I ask - why you don't fit internal hub gears as well as the rear cassette ? Like the early Greenspeeds ?
Wouldn't doing this allow for some extra gearing for a little more top end speed ?

Hi, I really like your videos thanks. I would like to know how the control panel is during sunny days if you can see it. In that does the sun wash it out so you can not see it while riding? when adding the weight with the motors does this take into account that you can have less weight per person as the capacity for a Catrike Trail is eg 275 weight capacity. do I count the motor and my weight plus my gear to see if I am over the weight capacity for the trike? Thanks for your help in advance. Planning on doing a tour in my Country (Canada). This year is 2022 now.

I don't see the video where you compare motors. Have you not done it yet? Or am I just missing it? I am very interested in torque sensor motors, do you have others available? Any that can go on Sunseeker trikes?

I'm curious why the battery is mounted on the right side; I would think it would be better to keep it away from the chain & rear derailleur. Can it be mounted on the left side?

What happened to the videos?? I looked forward to watching these videos, very informative, I've learned quite a bit about Trikes and the editing of the videos are well done. Can someone tell me what happened or will there be some upcoming videos soon?

Question: For bigger people who maybe want to get into this as an active hobby, what trike would you recommend in the 3-4k price range? You guys all look like you could ride bikes made of balsa wood with no issues but at 6'1 and 300 pounds I'm kinda skittish about these delicate looking machines.

What would be the pros and cons of outfitting the ecat with a Rohloff hub and what would be the price increase?

I'm currently riding an Expedition with a Bafang 1000 and a 24.5 AmpH battery. The 14 speed Rohloff gearing is more than adequate for my setup. I imagine it would be just as much of a breeze with this Bosch setup. Lack of a throttle on the Bosch withstanding, I'd probably go with this if I ever consider adding another Catrike to the stable. I mean, it's a new system, so there's a good chance either Bosch or an aftermarket manufacturer will come out with a throttle later down the road.

Bosch wants you to still feel like your riding a bike, they have zero plans on making a motor with a throttle.

Great review I am very interested in this system. Question with this system if I run out of battery juice will I still be able to pedal? If yes is there a lot of resistance?

You can still pedal and there's hardly any resistance from the motor.

@@jimmysapien9961 I purchased the system for my Catrike 559 last year and I am very happy with the Bosch system. There is little to no resistance . I purchased a extra battery and I can ride 50 to 60 miles in Turbo which is the highest settling and the most fun to ride in.

Would this model be good for a petite, 4’11” senior woman? Also, I’m interested in one that is more upright, that’s easy to get in and out of, with good ground clearance. Thanks for your help!😊

Does any e-trikes have a range in power up to 50 mph. Since I haven't seen one that is added in their ad's I will assume they don't have the power to go a couple miles to stay in the line of traffic.

very interested. I have A Kalkhoff with Bosch motor so familiar with controls. Unfortunately at age 74, not real good on balance and leg strength and so several falls, including one resulting in broken wristS. So would need to come down from Boise. Can you get them assembled? Looks like it folds up, would like some vid on that procedure. What are dimensions folded up? (Need to fit into my wife's Ford Escape.

I own a Catrike Dumont and in some ways would enjoy the E system but the price will kill me.
Also does Boush have any idea to incorporate a solar panel so it can be charging while riding? I have canopy and have a solar cell system to charge many of my components as I ride.
