Awww poor boy, I'm glad he's well. I've had my Sun Conure 26 years and he's never been sick. I took him to the vets when I first got him and never took him again. He gets fresh fruit everyday and he's traveled by plane, boat, motorhome and car. I had a plumhead parakeet that lived to be 25 and he was never sick a day in his life. I find this interesting but I rarely get sick nor do I take any kind of prescription or over the counter meds. Just good healthy living at it's best!
My cockatiel hated baytrill and we ended up in animal ER because I thought he was dying because his eyes got droopy after and he sounded like he was suffocating. Turns out he just hated the flavor and blew it through his nares. Haha.
I just moved from Tennessee to Oregon and we camped the entire way. That's my guess as to what did it. Strange sleeping patterns and constant change of temperature must have made him weak. He's doing better now it seems.
he trusted me more than his other buddies...but since all those feeding episodes,he was reluctant to even step up on my finger...so i totally agree with spoon feeding sick birds.they find it playful and that keeps them happier and healthier.i stopped forcing my bird and and he went back to normal in like a week.he's the happiest boy now:)i hope your bird never gets sick again! cuz it hurts like a knife when they get ill !!
When My sun conure first got sick he was scared of the syringe as well. I put it on the spoon too and mixed a drop of syrup, he seemed to like it. He got a bacterial infection two years later, I used the syringe and he took it like a baby. I guess he loved the syrup flavor! Great video!
Hello Sun Conure love fresh oregano and oregano is good for colds infection thats there favorite herb and they love cuties walnuts,my son's conure like smoothies w/plain yogurt, berries, flax, honey, banana, fresh fruit, lentils, chick beans, just saying, prayer to St. Francis of Asiss too God Bless u all 😇
Thanks for the advice-wouldn't hurt to get all birds used to drinking a treat from a spoon before they even get sick so you will have better chance of getting the meds in
hi Apollo is not my bird , i don't know the answer to your question, keeping my birds warm during winter has been my way of keeping my birds healthy, my birds are very seldom sick, almost never sick. i keep them very warm in winter with a heater in their room.
When I first got my lovebird I had to give him two weeks of antibiotics twice a day. Fun. He hated it even through it tasted like cherry. Catching him was awful.
Your videos are great! I have learned so many great, useful and unique tips from your videos that I have never come across anywhere else. Please keep making the vids!
He was sick about 6 months ago and I think this was a relapse. For some reason captive parrots are horrible at fighting infections. We have him on the same dose of antibiotics he was on before but this time its less per dose with more doses. He's recovering wonderfully.
In Australia you have the best avian vet in the world. Dr. Ross Perry. I can't believe you haven't heard of him!!!!!!! I am so sorry about your bird. You have to look Dr. Perry up if you get another one. He is wonderful!!!!
way to go looking after your bird...!!!...he is adorable...some people probably wouldn't bother...although I can't think of why...I did that with my cockatiel also...and he is fine!!! I can see that you love your bird and that he loves you...way to go!!!!
ahhh you are so sweet with your birdy! i wish i new this when my budgie got sick. it was so hard to feed her, her med but i always gave her something tasty afterwards. she was a very sick bird though, and even had to have a tumor removed then got diabeties. she also had some anger problems for some reason she would always try to attack people lol and fly after them and almost draw blood all the time! she was not shy at all. but was very smart though, for a budgie
wonderful! thankyou for the information! my greencheek has been well all his 13 years, but i always wondered how I would give such a small bird meds if needed. "Now I know! And knowing is half the battle!"
I also recently had a sick cockatiel bird - it was very sudden that he got sick, just started throwing up on me. So he was at the vet's in no less than 30 minutes from the second he started. It was determined he had a bit of a gut infection, so they also gave him Baytril - a shot at first, overnight holding in a incubator, and then I fed him Baytril 2x a day for a week. The shot did the trick almost immediately, the feedings he didn't mind as well, till around the last few days.
Boy, have I got it made! Too bad I can't show you all the stuff I can do with my birds. Well, they're actually my father's but he's getting a heck of a deal with me taking care of them. You should check out Dr Ross Perry's videos. He's an Australian avian veterinarian and I learned everything from him and reading books on birds medical care, and I have crop fed, nasal flushed, given IM & SQ injection, blood draws from jugular vein, nail & beak trims, weighed them, treated them, etc.
It's cool you are being creative giving medicine to Apollo. I'm going to try apple juice next time I have to give her medicine. Thanks for the video :)
Thank you for this video. I am wondering...I have an old lovebird of 18 years old who doesn't drink and eat enough anymore. So I have to feed him with a syringe, which he hates. But I have to do it because he just won't eat enough himself, not even his most favourite snacks. Now we are doing this feeding with the two of us. I hold my bird and open his mouth, and my friend puts the baby food in his mouth with a syringe. Now I am wondering....how much should we squeeze in his mouth at once? Is it okay to squeeze 0.5 ml in his mouth at once? Or is that too much to swallow for him? Also is there any danger that the food gets into his lungs if we squeeze it in his mouth? After feeding him like this he seems fine and actually nibbling and enjoying it it looks like. I guess that's a good sign right? A sign also that we did it correct?
I had to do this w/1 of my rescues. Another idea: if ur bird likes almond butter or bread products, u can also mix in the almond butter & smear on a piece of bread. I don't recommend mix w/sugar (or giving sugar period) cuz affects yeast in their system. Medicating birds is tough! Can someone do a vid on what flu viruses & illnesses r communicable between human & birds. Cuz I worry whenev I get sick., pinpointing symptoms can b tough.
I have a galah cockatoo that got a respiratory infection. I've also read that apple juice can be toxic to some parrots, one of the reasons being high arsenic levels. The way my vet said was to give it as the only water. If he gets thirsty he will drink.
I have learn with my Quaker that I offer a grape and he will take his Celebrex willing for me. He is so used to the syringe for me now, he understands but still likes to give me a hard time once in a great while. But I can understand your trouble with medicines for Apollo. Cynthia
His story was he was with 12 other birds and in a hoarding situation.I rescued him as he was the worst and its cost me a lot of money sadly. 2 vets who were bird vets were not helpful and cost me $400. Im dealing with my own health stuff but he needs care and i need advice asap He has one stump foot no toes, Other foot has 2 toes and 3rd one badly broken going a different direction. He has all his sheaths on his feathers almost covers his whole body. Some have broken and now stuck inside him. Its rock hard to get off. I can sit for hours rubbing it off but barely make progress. but some of the small ones with the smallest touch fall out whole.I was told by this vet he is an old bird so why does he still have this ? He is pulling out his tail ones because im sure it hurts . My biggest concern is the few that must have broke off due to him not being able to perch .He walks a small amount, balance is awful he goes to the side or falls forward onto his beak. Also told he has non cancerous tumor large enough to pull him forward. He doesn't speak, they said he could be blind. His one stump foot is locked so he can't move it. This poor bird just sits there in a corner it's the saddest thing. Any suggestions help anyone live near me i'd take him anywhere. The one vet was horrible i spent $200 for nothing 10min with him. I live in Canada Ontario Mississauga . He is in a beautiful cage i clean daily from mess. He is alot of work,He is on soft lined cage bottom,of blankets and even a cushion but has feet sores. I applied a cream vet gave seems to do more harm than good. He also had smelly blood clots through his whole back so 2 days and 5 hours i took a qtip to clean each one.He has gotten stronger with a lovely diet,i make sock nest for him to sit in like a donut so he can relax straight instead of falling over. I heat up his bedding at night a little and he loves it. He sleeps alot! He is also in my arms many hrs of the day. His feathers are my biggest concern. 2 straws inside body broken feather. Im sure he has more but the rock hard tubes are all over and i cannot just easy get them off. What can i do? Please help ......his broken toe in another pic,
I'm having to give my sun conure some antibiotics, too. He shakes a lot of it out. He's still breathing heavily so I really hope it's not a fungal infection instead.
The main thing is to keep up w/the checks, tests for diseases to make sure your bird is healthy and doesn't catch anything, and keep on eye on the organs (liver and kidney, spleen, etc.) Those can become diseased in birds or fail and need to make sure they are healthy and in working order. Get yourself a stethoscope so you can listen to the heart, lungs and breathing too. You have to stay on top of birds' health in order for them to live a long life (any exotic for that matter). Good luck.
I guess the bird teaches you to be creative as much as you teach it! This video made me sad though because it sucks when your pet isn't feeling well :(
Sweetest little thing… I need to get a geo tag for my bird :/ my macaw sounds so noticeably congested and it seems to be getting worse… can’t find much online
Its an ID tag it has a code on it. I think its only to tell if its a male or female but I'm probably incorrect. Once you buy your bird they take it off from what I remember its been so long since I had a bird.
Your so lucky. Here in Australia we dont get this kind of help for birds. Our Vets only care about dogs and cats. My bird passed away because I could not get the attention it needed within such a short time frame.
We recently had to give our GCC antibiotics and we had to do the exact thing, it was 0.1mL with exact syringe. We found what worked best was to just take the syringe with the antibiotics in the syringe and suck up her favourite type of juce (apple juce) and then she drank straight from the tip willingly. my parrot got injured ion the eye lid...he was talking and chirping on his way to the emergency clinic...the doctor prescribed some eye drops for him and some medicine to be fed to him through a syringe...i had to forcefully feed him that and hold him like that to put those eye drops in his eyes....trust me,that scared the poor little guy like any thing...he was having a fever the next day from all the extra care, his droppings were runny...he was not eating and just wanted to sleep.
No...it's a sun conure...Although they do look similar jendays have solid green wings. When sunnies are babies they have solid green wings but mature to the half yellow half green.
That's the best way. Ask your vet to show you have to give injections and ask your vet for the injectable form of meds next time. Just let him show you were the best spot is b/c flight muscles can be affected/best given in lower part of right pectoral muscle. The upper breast muscle is their main location of the much needed flight muscles. That, or your vet can teach you how to give the meds via crop.
I imagine the reason most parrots in captivity get sick easier, is because (mostly) they are hand-fed... so they don't get the extra stuff that their parents would feed them that boosts their immune system when they are younger... just a guess (no, I am not trying to sound like I am smartass there... I am literally saying, its just a guess) anyways... so has he gotten any better?
I haven't read any comments here, did you find out what your bird is sick from? Does the acid in the apple juice do anything to affect the medication? I'm just wondering because I have a Sun who loves orange juice and I'm thinking that I could use the juice method if he ever got ill but I want to know if the juice interferes with the medication.

I had to do this to my bird but he had to have shots every day but he didn’t bite me also I would recommend using a towel
best bird owner probably on the earth :)

I’m sorry that your parrot is sick I have the same parrot but he’s not sick I’m so sorry
As a sun conjure owner, i can say that i can hear a VERY familiar sound in the background during the apple-juice explanation:P
I guess the bird teaches you to be creative as much as you teach it! This video made me sad though because it sucks when your pet isn't feeling well :(

i have come to love Apollo through your videos, is he better?
Wow! You're a amazing owner!

Why Didn't You Just Put His Medicine In His Water?
He would taste that for sure. The plain water won't hide the taste of bitter medicine.
No disrespect, but could he have gotten sick from flying outside when the weather isn't warm enough for him???
one of the loudest breeds
my love bird had the same thing and the vet gave him the same stuff but already mixed in water so could just use that as his water for 14 days
Thank you for sharing I really appreciate this information
australia is massive... ross perry could be anywhere from 20 minutes away to several days' driving...
We recently had to give our GCC antibiotics and we had to do the exact thing, it was 0.1mL with exact syringe. Haha my sun conures name is Apollo! Thank you for the information, my bird also hates to take his meds so the apple juice trick will really help
great video! How did you get Apollo to sit on your shoulder and not fly around when hes in the house? can you make a tutorial on it?
That's the best way. Ask your vet to show you have to give injections and ask your vet for the injectable form of meds next time. Just let him show you were the best spot is b/c flight muscles can be affected/best given in lower part of right pectoral muscle. The upper breast muscle is their main location of the much needed flight muscles. That, or your vet can teach you how to give the meds via crop.
my bibby birb has an infection and we are gonna take him to the vet im so scared

Are sun conures loud?
your a good daddy Jon!
Who apart from me looked for recent videos to check if the parrot got better.... Seems He did
Hey wow. I hope Apollo gets better? How long has he been sick?
