On one of her visits to the surface, which are forbidden by her controlling father, King Triton, she falls for a human prince. Determined to be with her new love, Ariel makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch Ursula (Pat Carroll) to become human for three days. I can’t wait for the Simpsons movie!
"It's so old!"
I watched it in the theatre as a kid😂
You need to see The Little Mermaid 2 (sequel), and The Little Mermaid 3 (prequel).
They had to hand drawer of the bubbles. They didn’t animate any of them. They had to hand, draw them in the little mermaid.
You should do little mermaid 2
Don't forget Ariel was already fascinated by humans before she ever met Eric. Falling in love was a bonus.
That’s true. We get to know more about her human fascination in the TV series, which leads up to the first film.
@@SpacialRend7 Now if only many of the tv series could get a proper release on dvd/blu-ray.
Whoever dares to say "she left her world for a man" it's a completely dipshit
I agree, even without Eric I don’t think Ursula would have a problem getting Ariel to make a deal to get legs
They're gonna fuck this up somehow in the remake
I love the fact that Ursula had to use a spell on Eric, because that means he was so in love with Ariel that even the voice he really was longing to find wasn´t enough for her to trick him
Eric falls in love with Ariel even without the voice he loves so much. That speak volumes,
Sad fact: In the original storyline,Eric was a jerk and really did ditched Ariel for Ursula. He also ends up killing Ariel.
I expected Ariel to have a bit of a tearstained farewell monologue at the end taking one last glance at Eric aware her dream has been shattered.
Ariel:
I went to Ursula as a mermaid hoping I could get to be with you, Eric... But instead, she repaid that with manipulation. If only I had been more decisive and acted sooner... Maybe we could have kissed on my first day as a human and stopped Ursula's plot before it started... (sob) Now that Ursula's gone, I'm free but I'll be free of the sea ever... I will always be your true love forever and ever, Eric... I pray where you go from here, you'll find happiness... I guess this is goodbye... (sob)
The scene where Triton destroyed all of her stuff killed me honestly. Not only do you feel terrible for Ariel but You can tell he does love Ariel and truly regretted snapping like that.
You know it gets on my nerves that everyone complains about Encanto for what Abuela Alma did, yeah, no one complains about what Triton did.
@@osmanyousif7849 part of it may be the fact that some didnt even watch Little Mermaid, but otherwise... same
@@osmanyousif7849 it's Pretty similar to the Stoic in how to train your dragon. Triton and Stoic were shown to instantly regret their actions from time to time. But are too proud to take it back.
And some moments showing they REALLY care for their kids.
Abuela Alma, however, never did this until the every end when they lost everything. Which is part of her character development, as she did lose her way and cared more about the gifts and the family's reputation, than the family themselves.
This is why people are mostly more forgiving to them.
@@osmanyousif7849 I think abuelas was worse cause she actually belittled and neglected her for years cause she’s she didn’t meat the family standard Alma upholds while Triton did snap for the moment but it was a boiling point of his true desire from keeping Ariel safe and avoiding her being harmed or worse by the hands of humans who killed her mother and her looking exactly like her doesn’t help loosen the situation.
Yeah. Even HE knows he went too far. Really, it makes sense that he would give up his life to save Ariel from becoming a slave to Ursula. He loves her dearly and can’t bear to see her harmed, especially since it was his shortsighted destruction of her grotto that made her vulnerable to Ursula’s manipulations in the first place.
Rest In Peace Kenneth Mars (voice of King Triton), Samuel E. Wright (voice of Sebastian), Pat Carroll (voice of Ursula), Buddy Hackett (voice of Scuttle), René Auberjonois (voice of Chef Louis), Ben Wright (voice of Grimsby), and Paddi Edwards (voices of Flotsam and Jetsam).
Paddi Edwards is also GOZER!
And also Will Ryan, the voice of the seahorse
fuck reading it all out is depressing. Time will keep taking talented people from us 😞
@@jacobdehaan4114 DAGAMES? :)
Jeez, RIP the whole cast basically
Fun Fact: The song, Part of Your World was ALMOST cut out of the movie entirely. The CEo thought it was too boring, and didn't want it to be in the movie, but luckily, Lyrist Howard Ashman put up quite a convincing argument , by basically stating "If the song goes, then I'm leaving.". SO the song ended up staying in the movie.!I'm glad they kept it in, because it's very iconic.
We need more people like Howard Ashman.
It's an incredibly important and necessary song. It's what, in musical theatre theory, is called an "I want" song, that establishes a character's personal goal or most heartfelt wish.
@@oliverbrownlow5615 Ralph from “Wreck-It-Ralph, was originally going to have one too.

Fun Fact:
This was the last Disney animated film to use the traditional methods of painting the animated characters on celluloid sheets and photographing them on top of a painted background.
Starting with their next film, The Rescuers Down Under (criminally underrated), the animators’ drawings were colored digitally from then on.
This also meant that the bubbles were all hand-drawn and animated by the effects animation team. Every. Single. One.
Ursula's story is that she was once a fortune teller who lived in the palace. She used trickery to deceive the merfolk. Triton found out and banished her from Atlantica forever.
Pat Carroll voiced one heck of a Disney villain. It's truly sad she passed away last year. She sounds like a sweet person. I would've loved to meet her and thank her, the same with Jodi Benson.
Wrong! Ursula tried to steal Triton's throne while she lived in Atlantica. Ariel said that in an extended scene of when Ariel meets Ursula scene
Fun fact: Ariel’s red hair was a last minute choice. The decided that making her blonde like they originally planned was more expensive, so she was a redhead to save money!
No it was because blonde hair is hard and uglier to animate under different lighting unlike the red hair
I love Ariel's red hair. ❤️ 😍
Actually, they did it that way to give Ariel a more noticeable and easily distinguishable feature, by a desire to create a visually unique and memorable character, as red hair is relatively uncommon and can be visually striking. And also, five years before the premiere of The Little Mermaid, Splash had been released, a film starring Tom Hanks whose partner was a blonde mermaid who falls in love with him (in fact, that film almost condemned the project because some producers did not have faith that another film about a mermaid might work) and that's what pushed Ariel's animators to make her a red hair.
Fun fact
Christopher Daniel Barnes was 16 years old and Jodi Benson was 28 during filming.
Daniel also later voices another Disney prince, Cinderella’s in the sequels.
There are just so many reasons to love this movie. The characters are all great, the animation and music are gorgeous, and the songs are next level Broadway style hits. "Part Of Your World" is just beautiful, "Under The Sea" is a massive bop, and "Poor Unfortunate Souls" is still one of the best villain songs Disney has ever made.
The ending of "Part Of Your World" actually has a similar ending to one of Menken and Ashman's earlier songs, "Somewhere That's Green" from "Little Shop Of Horrors" (first performed in 1982 I think). A similar tune comes up with the words "Far from Skid Row/I dream we'll go/Somewhere that's green".
@@strawberrysoulforever8336 Oh great now I'm imagining Ursula as Audrey two singing Mean Green Mother.
It actually fits quite well.
Don't forget Kiss the Girl.
@@strawberrysoulforever8336 that's actually because Menken took his song, “ Somewhere That's Green”, tweaked the musical arrangement a bit, wrote new lyrics, and turned it into the new “I want” number for this movie.
@@ashesbaby266 But the rest of the song doesn't sound that similar. "Look at this stuff, isn't it neat, wouldn't you think my collection's complete" has a tune that sounds nothing like "I know Seymour's the greatest, but I'm dating a semi-sadist". I will admit "Up where they walk, up where they run, up where they stay all day in the sun" does sound a little like "A washer and a dryer and an ironing machine". But on that note, didn't Ashman write the lyrics to both songs? He was the lyricist, Menken was the composer.
Jodi Benson did such an AMAZING job in this movie! Even I felt the pain in her voice when she got emotional!
She is an amazing woman and voice actor
@@Angelicwings1 She sure is
I love Jodi I met her back in 2019 best moment in my life
The Little Mermaid is such a memorable Disney film and it's definitely the start of Disney's first renaissance, arguably Walt Disney Animation Studios best era.
Ain’t no arguably, it is Disney’s best era
The live action will never defeat the original as some people say. The animated version was made with love and respect knowing that disney at those moments where almost close to bankrupt.
As a kid I was more terrified of King Triton than I was with Ursula. Ursula may be the wicked and menacing sea witch but Triton was very ferocious with his loud booming voice, hot boiling temper, and especially the way he acted during the grotto scene.
Him destroying Ariel's cave was just..... evil. The scene really did it's best to convey that, with the dramatic light, the dark silhouette of Triton and even the sound his triton makes once glowing up.
Father of the year -_-
My father was King Triton and Beast combined when I was a kid, so them scene when they lost their temper scared me the first time.
I was terrified of that scene! I used to fast forward the VHS through it.
@@DragonSkyNija you're lucky, my dad swang between angry Triton and Judge Frollo. And he was so smooth as the conniving gas lighter that I was convinced I was a bad kid for year so I started to act the part. When I finally figured out things were toxic at home I didn't know how to communicate that fact.
But the cycle ends with me. I will never treat my daughter that way and we are no contact with him.
@@alyshaharper8730 I can say that I was not lucky as a kid. The thing I wrote was when he only was very angry, but he did hurt my feelings and confidence many time when he compared me when I was 8-12 years old to a toddler when dropped something by mistake. He would say that I was worse than (toddler's name), but worse was when he was very drunk also, because the punishment was than old style physical punishment mostly with a his indoor leather slipper, and I can say he didn't hold back much, I even wanted to off myself or wanted to escape from my home many times, but couldn't because I was thinking on my mom and didn't want to hurt her feelings, but he stopped use physical punishment when I was between 9-10 years old. Now my father is not the same person as he was from the past. I could wrote more bad things my father did during my childhood, but than this would been a very long comment. To be honest I am a pretty chill dude, but I have a bit of my father's anger temperament, but I hold it in control, or if I feel it starting going bad than I choose to go away for a bit to calm down, but if someone don't let me calm down and it feels like I'm pushed and attacked in a corner with no escape or won't be allowed to defend my self, than my anger would explode, but I would not be physical. It has happen only twice first was my older sister second was with my friend when he kinda treated me with a knife in my own home some years ago when we played some video game.
Last thing my anger temperament increase a bit if they talk angry with me based if the person tone of voice, but it increase faster if they starts to scream at me. I will warn every new person I will meet and if they would annoy me for the first time, to try not make me angry, or make it worse. I would tell them my signs that when I starting to get angry and need to go away, it can be all from few minutes to many hours based on my anger level. It is the same when I play video games, if I start to get angry inside myself than I would choose to close of the game and try it again in a another day instead.
Jodi Benson (Ariel and Vanessa) and Christopher Daniel Barnes (Eric and currently Prince Charming) are such underrated voice actors!
This movie was the one that saved Disney from the bankruptcy, it was my favorite in my childhood and it still is.
The Disney Renaissance with Howard Ashman, a Queer Person who was taken before his time, gave us memories to cherish for the years ahead. We should never forget that.
Gotta respect Eric for being an accomplished sailor despite his status as a prince.
How strong is Chef Louis if he can *chop what appears to be a chest of drawers* in half with just a meat cleaver?
And Sebastian must be good at his job when he can create a whole musical number *off the top of his head,* using only a water reed and aquatic creatures he's just met... and then subsequently manages to create *the* perfect atmosphere for romance. No wonder Triton puts him in charge of royal productions - the crab is hyper competent!
1. Some facts about Little Mermaid when it came out this was when People knew Disney was back on the animation map as while their two previous animated films Great Mouse Detective and Oliver and Company were both well received with critics and box office numbers it wasn’t anything spectacular then this came out and not only did Disney film finally beat out Don Bluth who was competing with them by releasing his films the same time as Disneys with An American Tail being released around the same time as Great Mouse and Land Before Time the same time as Oliver and Company. He released All Dogs Go to Heaven and was blown out of the water by this one,
2. At the time this film had the most sound effects of any film,
3. This film won two Oscars for Best Original Song for Under the Sea and for Best Original Score which made it the first Disney film since Bedknobs and Broomsticks to win an Oscar and the first animated Disney film to be nominated for an Oscar since The Rescuers,
4. Howard Ashman besides working on the songs with Alan Menken also helped with the story such as originally Sebastian was originally supposed to be an English Butler crab named Clarence, but changed to a Trinidadian as well as the name and as a result the whole musical tone also shifted to match that although commonly confused as being Jamaican, Sebastian is actually Trinidadian. Samuel E. Wright confirmed that was in fact the accent he used while voicing by the character.
5. Part of Your World" was nearly cut; Jeffrey Katzenberg felt that it was "boring," as well as being too far over the heads of the children for whom it was intended. At a test screening children were restless during the song which did not have finished animation - in particular one child that sat in front of Katzenberg and spilled his popcorn and was more interested in picking it up than watching the sequence. John Musker, Ron Clements, and Howard Ashman all pleaded their case and begged Katzenberg to let the song stay to no avail. Ultimately, the one who managed to convince him to give it a second chance was the animator of the sequence, Glen Keane. Another screening was set up, this time with an adult audience. It was a greater success (even reportedly moving some members to tears) and so the song was left in the film. Katzenberg later said that he was happy no one listened to him because he couldn't imagine the film without the song.
6. The voice of Grimsby is Ben Wright who was in a previous Disney film as Roger in 101 Dalmatians (1961) and while not Disney, people will also know him as the lead Nazi Herr Zeller in The Sound of Music and this was his last film released after his death and Disney folks had no idea that he had been the voices of Roger in One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) and Rama in The Jungle Book (1967). He had to tell them.
7. Similar to Beauty and the Beast during Walt’s life The Little Mermaid had been a Disney property since 1941. Walt Disney planned to include the much darker Hans Christian Andersen version of the tale in a planned anthology film of the fantasy author's works. After a bitter strike by the animators that same year and the increasing focus on World War 2 wartime propaganda shorts, the initial version of The Little Mermaid was shelved in 1943
8. Ariel is the first Disney princess to have biological siblings and Ariel is purposely made to stand out from her sisters. Firstly, she's the only redhead and the only one who wears her hair down. Secondly, she's the only mermaid whose seashell top isn't the same color as her tail. Finally, although all of Triton's daughters have names that begin with the letter 'A', Ariel's is the only one whose name doesn't also end with that letter and she was made a redhead to distinguish her from Darryl Hannah’s live action mermaid in an earlier Disney Touchstone film with Tom Hanks called Splash,
9. One neat easter egg is when in the concert audience in the beginning and Triton is going down in his chariot if you look closely not only can you see Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy in the audience, but also Kermit the Frog and I know you haven’t seen the Muppet films yet so I would recommend them and go in release order they are not connected, but it is a nice progression,
10. The film was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker who also did The Great Mouse Detective, Aladdin, Hercules, Treasure Planet,
Princess and the Frog, and Moana,
11. Jodi Benson recorded "Part of Your World" in the dark to get that 'under the sea' feeling.
12. This film was the last to use all hand painted cels for the animation as Disney's next film, The Rescuers Down Under (which is a sequel to a film from the 70’s they did called The Rescuers) used a digital method of coloring and combining scanned drawings developed for Disney by Pixar called CAPS/ink & paint (Computer Animation Production System), which would eliminate the need for cels, the multiplane camera, and many of the optical effects used for the last time in The Little Mermaid.
13. Besides voicing Ursula in this film Pat Carroll also voiced her sister Morgana in the sequel and Before recording "Poor Unfortunate Souls," Pat Carroll asked Howard Ashman to sing the song one more time to get it right. He happily obliged. According to Carroll, he "put on the cloak" and she admits to stealing his body language and two or three adlibs from him ("Pathetic," "Idn't it," "You can't get something for nothing," and "No more talking, singing, zip-pah.")
14. The character of Ursula was based on drag performer and John Waters regular Divine. Her personality and some of her actions were also largely inspired by a previous Disney villain, Madame Medusa from Disney's The Rescuers.
15. The animators created the character of Ursula for Bea Arthur, who declined as she was occupied with The Golden Girls. Jennifer Saunders then auditioned for the role of Ursula but was turned down. Somehow in 2002, Steven Spielberg got hold of her tape and insisted to the three directors of Shrek 2 that she be cast as the scheming Fairy Godmother. After Bea Arthur turned down the chance to voice Ursula, Nancy Marchand, Sylvia Sidney, Nancy Wilson, Roseanne Barr, Coral Browne, Charlotte Rae and Elaine Stritch were all then considered with the latter eventually being cast in the part; however, Stritch's style clashed with that of lyricist Howard Ashman so Pat Carroll got the part
16. The dress Ariel wears during her dinner with Eric is actually a combination of different dresses worn by every Disney princess prior to her. The puffy sleeves with the diamond designs are similar to the sleeves on Snow White's iconic dress. The light pink color comes from Cinderella's mother's dress (the one the stepsisters rip apart). The full skirt and draping are from Cinderella's famous ball gown. Finally, the off-the-shoulder neckline and long, pointed sleeves were inspired by Princess Aurora's royal ball gown.
17. Scheduling conflicts with Star Trek: The Next Generation forced Patrick Stewart to turn down the role of King Triton.
18. Sebastian's fanfare was performed by composer Alan Menken on a kazoo.
19. The shot of Ariel reaching out through the skylight of her grotto at the end of "Part of Your World" was the last shot to be completed. It took four tries to get the optical effects just right.
20. Ariel is the first Disney animated heroine to have a bare midriff, as well as the first to display cleavage.
21. In Greek mythology, Triton is the son of Poseidon. Poseidon is the brother of Zeus. Zeus had a son named Heracles, who is the main hero of Hercules. This makes Disney heroes Ariel and Hercules first cousins once removed.
22. When The Little Mermaid earned four Golden Globe nominations in 1990, it not only became the first full-length animated feature film to be nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, but it also became the first animated feature to be nominated for a Best Picture Golden Globe Award, of any genre, in general. Even though it did not win, Disney's Beauty and the Beast would later on to become the first animated feature film to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), two years later.
23. Both Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick auditioned for the role of Prince Eric, but Christopher Daniel Barnes who ended up voicing him was only 16 years old when he recorded his voice for Prince Eric the producers felt his voice sounded much older than he really was.
24. Maybe I’m an idiot for not realizing it, but when Ursula disguised herself and is using Ariel’s voice that is Jodi Benson doing the voice since it is her,
One last thing I wanted to say was in defense of Ariel as so many people think she is an idiot for willingly making a deal with Ursula to be with a man, but here's the deal.
1. She was already obsessed with humans and their ways and seeing Eric only sealed the deal of her wanting to go out of the ocean,
2. All of her human possessions were destroyed by her father which propelled her decision making of making the agreement with Ursula as the only way to achieve what she wanted and what she would to do have it,
Ursula is a TERRIFYING villain! Pat Caroll did such a good job voicing both her and Morgana in the sequel.
The third "The Little Mermaid" movie, "Ariel's Beginning" explains why King Triton hates humans so much. I was six years old when "The Little Mermaid" movie released in 1989, and it was my first Disney movie to ever see. It is a favorite Disney movie of mine, even three decades later
Here’s some fun facts.
- Though Sebastian talks with a Caribbean accent, he was originally gonna have a British accent.
- Though Ursula looks like a octopus, in the early stages of animation, she was originally gonna look like either a lionfish or scorpionfish
- The directors of this, John Musker and Ron Clements would later direct other Disney films like Aladdin, Hercules, Treasure Planet, The Princess and the Frog and Moana.
Rest in heavenly peace, in loving memory of Pat Carroll as Ursula
This movie will always hold a special place in my heart. Great reaction!!!
Me too.
Thanks!
This movie had a profound impact on the direction my life has taken (to make animated shows and films). At age 3 I knew I wanted to go down a pathway that combined art and storytelling in some way, largely thanks to the little mermaid.
Ps, Jodi Benson is the voice of Ariel and she was also the voice of Thumbelina which is another good animated movie 😊
She is also the longtime voice of Barbie, even playing her in the Toy Story movies.

Her father basically has a giant fork as an accessory piece that he always carries around. I was genuinely surprised he’s so impressed by a fork when I first saw this as a kid lol
I love The Little Mermaid so much, that's my entire childhood and I still love it just as much as an adult now.
Jodi Benson did such an amazing job, she was explicitly asked not to sing the song "Part of your world" in a more Broadway style that she's used to, and I'm happy about the results, as her voice reach the climax of the song and dies down with so much emotion, if anything, she nailed her role as Ariel.
I really love the idea that Eric falls in love with Ariel without the single piece of information to know that she was the girl that he was looking for, which is her heavenly voice. It really goes to show that Eric loves Ariel for who she is, her kind heart, her energy and curiosity for the world around her, look at how much he smiles when Ariel is around, and the comment about after Ariel is in the palace, he's finally able to smile and laugh from his heart, that's definitely love right there. All of that good qualities that Eric sees in Ariel and he falls in love with her, throwing away the illusion by throwing away the flute and looks at Ariel's direction. And when he says "I've lost her once, I'm not going to lose her again." I was like this guy is without a doubt marriage material.
When I look at The Little Mermaid made in 1989, I know those animators and directors understand romance, and they did it so beautifully.
I mean if I was Prince Eric, I would want to kiss Ariel in the kiss the girl scene too, not just because of the fact that romantic feelings are involved, but also because if a talking crab is making music with all the animals singing telling me to kiss the person I like, I will do it because it's DIVINE INTERVENTION
The Little Mermaid was the first fairy tale Disney movie since Sleeping Beauty in 1959. In between 1959 and 1989, Disney felt that people had just about enough of princess stories...

In the DVD commentary the directors (John Musker & Ron Clements) explain that so many bubbles were animated by the effects department, they didn't have time to ink and paint them all at studio headquarters so they shipped the drawings to a 3rd-party company in China, hoping to get fully inked cels back in time for photography. But this was roughly when the Tiananmen Square protests happened, and the civil unrest endangered all exports up to and including the cels Disney paid for. They eventually "got their bubbles back", but it was a close shave.
I love The Little Mermaid, it’s one of my top favorite animated films in the Disney library! Everything from the beautiful animation, the beloved characters (Sebastian being my favorite), and the wonderful songs (“Under the Sea” also my favorite) are what makes this film an undersea treasure. Thanks so much for sharing your reaction to TLM!
Another example of how the hand drawn animation Disney movies are way better than any animated film made today
This is another Disney classic. Even though there are only 2-3 memorable songs. “Under The Sea”, “Kiss The Girl” and “Part of your World”. But, in the movie’s defense, they really are the best songs in the movie.
Four. "Poor Unfortunate Soul" is amazing. Easily as good as "Be Prepared", or "Friends on the Other Side".

It's funny, there's a musical I'm into and one of the last things the antagonist mentions is that he only destroys things while the protagonist can build things. That's part of the reason he chooses to sacrifice himself while sparing the protagonist, telling her lines like "You're not beyond repair", and to "stick around here, make things better", although he once again expresses that he loves her and hopes she still feels the same way.

Despite this film being one of my favorites growing up, it's only relatively recently it occurred to me that those lost souls that catch Ariel's arm as she heads into Ursulas lair are probably trying to save her.
Oh, wow. What a profound insight.
An absolute classic! Ursula will forever be one the most legendary Disney villains. RIP Pat Carroll. This movie won the Academy Awards for Best Score and Best Song (Under the Sea) and it’s easy to see why.
I also recommend watching the sequel.
I have LOVED this movie since I was a child. Ariel is my FAVORITE Disney princess! Well, ONE of my favorites. Cinderella is a close second and Tiana from the Princess and the Frog is third.
Anyways, this movie helped me through a very difficult childhood. I love this movie so much for that. ❤
Thank you so much for the reaction. I appreciate it. You both are awesome! ❤
Another fun fact: the woman who voiced Ariel also voiced the Barbie In the Toy Story movies
In the original fairytale, The little mermaid finds the statue of the Prince before meeting him in real life. She keeps it on her cave and fantasizes about how handsome he is, and the life from above. Then when she sees the Prince for the first time, it’s like the materialization of all of her dreams, something that the Disney version misses
What's truly sad is that in the original book the prince fell in love with another girl and the mermaid had to kill him to become a mermaid again. But she couldn't find it in her heart and turned into sea foam.
The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite Disney musical movies I loved the most. All of the songs are awesome, beautiful relationships, saddest moments and funny actions. RIP to Samuel E. Wright as Sebastian and Pat Carroll as Ursula. It's time to go under the sea!
🧜♂️🧜♀️🐟🐠🐡🐬🦀🦞🦐🦑🎵😢🤣
I saw this movie on VHS a year after it came out, I was 8 and my brother was 6-7 and I cannot tell you how many times we watched the Chef in the Kitchen with Sebastian. It was non stop comedy to us.
Happy "First Contact Day"! 🖖
18:02 it’s not always easy being a good parent, nor is it easy for a child or teenager to fully understand certain things right away.
There’s nothing better than a Disney movie having a happy beginning and ending
Ursula is a Cecaelia, which are half-human, half-octopus. In the film, she was once a resident in the palace, possibly a royal magician of sorts until King Triton caught her using black magic and banished her. However, in the current license version of the stage musical and based on the deleted storyline for her, Ursula is the youngest of seven daughters. Her father was the sea god Poseidon, and she was always envious as he doted on the other daughters but not her. To ease his guilt being an awful father to her, he gifted her a magic nautical shell. Ursula started using black magic with it to kill off her sisters to become the favorite. However when that failed, she committed patricide, the act of killing ones’ own father; she then became the ruler of the entire ocean. However she had a younger sibling, King Triton. When he came of age he took back rule of the seas, the crown, and the trident. Then he banished her, and she swore revenge. It’s revealed the final confrontation that Ursula was responsible for the death of Ariel‘s mother. King Triton never knew because he assumes that humans are killed her because she went for a swim one day and never came back. Ariel to defeated her aunt by smashing her shell which acted as a life force to her.
🖤💜🐙🐚
So Ursula led Ariels mother to the pirate ship that harpooned her?
@@stephanniemorin Ursula killing Ariel’s mother is canon only in the licensed version of the stage musical.
Ursula is like the one and only Albert Wesker in the 'Resident Evil' franchise, so malicious, yet badass in terms of villainy.
The light mermaid was one of my favorites growing up , its such a great classic.
The amount of times i've seen this movie simply because this was my big sister's favorite movie the VHS copy we had was packed with Tarzan so we always saw both movies all the time
“Under the Sea” Such an iconic song.
This movie is REALLY nostalgic, and I loved it during my childhood (I still love it)! When they were alive, my uncles who lived in Manhattan took my mom and I too see the Broadway version of it, and we even went backstage! I got to meet the cast and it was AWESOME!!!!
It's a fantastic light hearted version of the original tale.
If the prince marries another woman, the mermaid will turn into sea foam.
She doesn't get her voice magically removed, her tongue gets ripped out.
Her human feet cause her tremendous pain with each step.
While she does have some chemistry with the prince, eventually he marries another.
Her sisters sell off their hair for another way out, and bring her a knife to kill the prince and his bride. If she does this, she gets her tail back and will be freed.
The mermaid refuses and turns into sea foam.
It's a pretty depressing story, with a tragic end
Yes, but I remember she actually earns her soul because of her sacrificing herself for love. Merfolk didn't have Souls and that's the reason they would turn to sea foam when they died.
Tim and Clarisse could totally cosplay Eric and Ariel for sure
Just watch a documentary of this. Specifically about the song Part of your world and how it was basically their "let it go".
The level of passion for this ONE song was amazing. The composer was even on the record room, with the singer, specifically to tell her, beat by beat, how he imagines the song to be.
And the more fascinating thing is that, the song was SO well made. When the animators heard it, one of their most talented animators- who usually ONLY draws villains. Mostly because of how much more expressive they can make them. Became SO inspired by the song that he asked to do Ariel's animation.
And this guy was well know in the studio for his expressive characters. And it SHOWS.
1989 was the year before I was born thank you guys so sweet. ❤
princess Ariel is my favorite Disney Princess; alongside princess belle’ 🎉
I’m looking forward to watching the remake of the little mermaid it is been 34 years since the original movie first came out since the late 1980s I hope you guys have watch the live action version of the little mermaid, 🎉
I grew up watching this movie when I was a little kid. Man I can't believe that the little mermaid is having a live movie in 2023
6:47 The actor Pat Carroll plays Ursula and also Jon Arbuckle’s grandmother in the Garfield Holiday specials. R.I.P.
The kitchen scene is the most memorable scene of the movie.
Poor unfortunate souls is one of the greatest villain songs of all time
Okay let's be honests here,Tim's adult comments about some moments and situations were a highlight of the reaction 😂 and made my day
Ayeee thanks
This is a movie that makes me miss classic, old school Disney. They're endlessly rewatchable and enjoyable.
The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and Aladdin are peak films of Disney Renaissance. Although everything from 1989 to 1999 has very special place in my heart. It was great time to be a kid. My dream is simple: Tim and Clariss does Aladdin reaction. Robin Williams (RIP) was amazing in it.
Great reaction Tim and Clariss, Ariel having the ability to turn into human and a mermaid makes her one of the best princesses out there and Eric and his bravery is awesome. keep up the great work Tim with your videos
Crazy to think that not only is this your first 2023 reaction with Clariss, but it’s the first you had a react collab with her since your _Home Alone 2_ Reaction 3-4 months ago.
Hope you do more collabs with Clariss along with collabs with BillyBinges, and James, Nobu, Hayley and Stella from White Noise Reacts.
My 1 big question - how did Flounder get the statue of Eric to her secret cave by himself? He's only got fins! 😂
And we actually see the 2 entrances to the cave, and they're small. Did he also dismantle the wall then put it back, too? Busy fish.
The statue sank into a part of the ocean. Density might be different under the sea.
Also fun fact: Christopher Daniel Barnes, A.K.A. Prince Eric, went on to voice Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the 90s Spider-Man,FOXkids TV show!
This is such a great movie. I actually saw the sequel first as a kid because my grandparents had purchased the DVD for me. Until I watched the original, I had thought that Ariel was just a mom character lol.
My very first Disney animated film growing up. Fitting you two are viewing this together for the first time on UA-cam!
Actually it was explained in the musical that Triton hates humans cause he thinks they killed Airel's mom
This is my favorite Disney movie since I was a kid! Ariel’s my favorite princess and Eric is my favorite prince, in my adult life I’ve realized that I prefer men who look like Prince Eric 😂 The scene where King Triton destroys her collection scared me so much as a kid, way more than Ursula ever scared me but at least Triton gave her legs at the end to make up for it. Such a beautiful story with amazing songs, all of the directors, producers, and songwriters absolutely killed it on this movie! Best movie Disney has ever done, it will always be my favorite ❤

THIS!
😱
This was the first time I saw something in a Disney movie (or maybe any movie) that scared me so much, I couldn’t watch it as a child!
The little mermaid is a true disney classic. All of music is very incredible and very creative.
In her backstory Ursula is Triton's sister (Ariel's aunt).
Like how Scar is Simba’s uncle
@@morganghostbusters-egonfan but without being explicitly stated. There are theories that scar is not related to mufasa by blood.
@@c.b.barlow I didn’t know that
You and Clariss must finish the Disney Renaissance together.
Still got 2 films left.
The Rescuers and Pocahontas
Ariel was my crush at 7 years old.
Who’s your crush now ariel winters
@@frozengamer3030 She's a little young for me. All I see is a little girl from Modern Family. Beyonce?
@@christhornycroft3686 Ok
Ursula is Triton’s sister and her backstory is that when triton was given the throne she was silenced and was never given a chance to show her leadership and power. (That’s why she took Ariel’s voice, because she herself was muted). Then, she tried to dethroned triton and that’s when she was expulse from the palace
How do yo know that ?
Sounds like what Scar did to Mufasa.
Ursula: Keep those polyps over there! Right. Chop-chop. Come on!
King Triton [arriving]: Ursula. I've been hearing rumors that you're connected to the missing merfolk
Ursula: Missing merfolk? Nooo! This is a massage parlor. See? [displays sign titled "Ursula's Heavenly Massage Parlor"]
King Triton: It looks like a prison.
Ursula: Look, your highness, if I was gonna kidnap merfolk, I wouldn't make it look like a prison, would I? I'd make it look like a massage parlor or something.
King Triton: ...Alright, just checking. [leaves]
Ursula: [giggles] What an idiot! [goes back to work]
It's considered to be one of Walt disney's best movies in his long run! Great job timothee & clariss❤️
Can’t wait to see you watch the sequel before, the live action remake release next month.
Shout out to Eric to being the first well written prince. The closest we had before him was Philip from Sleeping Beauty, though I feel I’m being generous.
This movie was the final Disney movie to be hand painted and to use cell animation. Every animated movie after was done via computer. And regarding the bubbles, they were also all hand drawn, but because so many were needed and there was so much other work being done, the animation for the bubbles was exported to China.
This is one of my favorite movies of all times! The story is so good! "Part of your world" is my favorite song. 😍💖
Prince Eric is my favorite Disney prince.
Every bubble was hand-drawn. There were artists assigned to do nothing but draw and paint bubbles for each scene.
It’s so funny to hear people say that 1989 is old! 🤣😂🤣😂 I grew up with this movie and Part of Your World had the same effect on little girls back then as Let It Go did a decade ago. 😄 If you are going to watch some Cinderella movies in the future I highly recommend Ever After with Drew Barrymore.
On top of all the elements mentioned (and I don't know if Clarisse knows these bits, considering she is a fan of the musical part even more than the animation), most of the success of this film comes from the musical contribution of Howard Ashman (lyrics) and Alan Menken (music).
Back in the day, while this film was still in the works, Ashman and Menken where popular for a silly musical called "Little Shop of Horrors" and Disney hired them to bring some of fresh air to their new attempt at animated films. The music was a blast it won the Oscar for best original song in the ceremony of 1990.
Unfortunately, Howard Ashmans' would only be capable of working fully in one more film (Beauty and the Beast) and bits of another (Aladdin), since his health declined quite rapidly due to AIDS. Ashman would die on March 14, 1991; mere months before the premiere of Beauty and the Beast.
People can still hear the early demos of many of his Disney songs since they were collected in the CD "Howard sings Ashman":

"Don't underestimate the importance of BOODYYY LANGUAGE!!!!"😂😂So iconic
This is the one that kicked off the renaissance era at Disney
i actually had something similar happen to me when my aunt ripped and tore my posters off my room walls when were were deep cleaning the house cuz i was trying to make sure they werent gonna be thrown out
Tim just keeps bringing the classics 😊 that's why I love this channel!!! What I find amazing is there are people who draw each individual piece of the story boards, so someone is in charge of each character then someone for the background and then the foreground like the bubbles, or whatever then they are all over imposed. In Bambi Walt brought actual deer into the studio with this movie they vacations to like the Bahamas or something to see actual fish and Coral etc before actually drawing it.... Disney has a weird obsession if you will, with underage girls finding older princes hot, jasmine, Ariel, Pocahontas, the list goes on and on!
According to mythologies, mermaids and mermen indeed eat fellow fish, as well as crustaceans and seaweed (which gives them the youthful looks)
A good movie you guys should watch together is called "The Pagemaster" it's one of my favorite childhood movies and is sadly really underrated in my opinion
Oh, I LOVED that film as a child! I still sing "Whatever You Imagine" on a regular basis. I agree with you, it's an extremely underrated film. So good
I have to be honest. I know Little Mermaid is a classic but it really creeped me out as a kid. Now that I watch it as an adult I remember why. The shark, Ursula, the kitchen….😖Anyway always enjoy your reactions.
