    Perugia is a gem. It is amazing that the city isn't overrun with tourists! I have had so many experiences where I didn't know much about a place and was just overwhelmingly surprised by it. I think Perugia is one of those places.

      Some years ago I was in Italy for three months following a university European programme. We had many cultural similarities, especially in the way we see family and relationships. Italians are more elegant in some ways. We are both cultural. Italy feels abroad but not stressing. I understand and speak basic Italian.

    Hi from italy, Gabriel! Besides the strict walking part, in Perugia there are several things to see, e.g. the big gothic-looking building in the main piazza contains an amazing paintings gallery focusing especially the medieval period (roughly speaking);
    wether for walking or art history, I can guarantee that any place in italy you could land in, there's something significant to see within one-hour ride, max. in most cases, half an hour. there's literally no end to the things to see, especially if one is interested in historic architecture and art history. I'm certainly not young and still discover places to visit on weekly basis.
    e.g. in the same Umbria there are many historical towns (including Assisi and Orvieto) but also many very tiny places (probably less fitting a walking-centric approach) with some amazing art and yet still unknown to the masses; and very green too
    only for the fun of it, I'll mention one random super-tiny super-quiet village there I recently stumbled on: Spello. known for 1. infiorata 2. the tiny Baglioni chapel, frescoed by Pintoricchio (desperately pretty) 3. a roman patrician house recently excavated

    I love your channel but I find your comments on Italy hilarious! Did you know that Italy was all separate kingdoms until unification. Each region is like a mini country, with its own culture, food and architecture. You’ve got a very American view of Italy. Florence is one of the most beautiful if not the most beautiful city in the world. Venice conquered the world 100s of years ago, Milan is an international powerhouse city, Rome the cradle of civilisation. Napoli which one of the most important cities in the world at one point. You could spend 1 year exploring Italy and still have so much to see 🇮🇹

    Thank you for bringing up some very happy memories. I studied there in the `1960s when I was just in my 20s. We students used to gather on the steps of the Cathedral (S. Lorenzo) just facing the great fountain. at 6 pm the street from the fountain to the balustrade overlooking the valley is Corso Vanucci, if I remember correctly. The closure is/was to turn the street into a promenade for pedestrians. If I've got the name wrong, I am now about to turn 80 - so it was a long time ago. And I recall that in the 60s of the last century there was no escalator in the Rocca Paolina. It was quite a climb, so I wouldn't dare to atempt it now. There was always something going on. I recall several organ concerts in the cathedral given by the famous Fernanso Germani. And I also attended a performance by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. They gave Berlioz's L'Enfance du Christ. To save cash I used to eat in what we called the communist Food Kitchen. Coincidentally, when I returned to Dublin, Ireland I joined a large choir and the first big work they gave was the same Berlioz piece.
    Again, thanks for reviving the memories.

    Calzone is named after a pair of trousers. Caleçon in French. Checked it, seems to be underwear, the shape should be similar.
    Eurail now has got global passes for 2-3 months. prices 829 $ 2 months, 1023 $ 3 months. But seems they also charge for every boarder transfer, as you need reservations for it. You probably know more about it.

    • @Worldofourown2024
      @Worldofourown2024 5 років тому

      I seen on DW a couple days ago EU gave free Summer Eurail passes to a select group of young adults encouraging them to go explore. It is a bit too pricey and they still wouldn't be able to afford rooms, food, and entertainment prices for hostel dorms easily go $50+ a night now where one needs a couple hundred dollars or Euros per day. I went in 2011 my last visit and probably won't go again for it's all becoming so expensive as is America as well which I no longer travel in either.

      I guess Gabriel probably has a data-enabled sim already, since nowadays you can purchase a sim anywhere in the EU and have it working everywhere, for a certain amount of data; if he doesn't have it, for long periods I think one of the best options to buy in italy is the Coopvoce one, easy to find in the Coop supermarket chain, ALL of the data of the option (e.g. 30GBx10€/month) should be available to him while he hops from country to country within Europe...

    Perugia and Baci chocolates comes to mind when I see you were in Perugia. Sadly, Meredith Kercher, Amanda Knox and kind of a weird prosecution/judicial system in Italy also come to mind. But, yeah, the architecture and those arches, and the restaurant at the base of them, were amazing.

    Perugia, indeed, is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy, but it is not a "small town", and it deserves more attention. Gabriel Traveler" shows a lot, but unfortunately he doesn't know much about art, architecture and history. So much more can and should have been said and shown !

    If you were a soccer fan you would have heard of Perugia. By the way Ryanair is called the aerial cattle truck. Is that how you found it? Italian is the closest to Latin - segretaria = secretary. Secretary of the stall perhaps. The only few different words to latin I find is for example Chiesa - church which I through would be like Iglesia in spanish.
