You've made me want jewel orchids so much. I know I can do this. I just have to give away a lot of my plant collection to make room. :) I'm sure I'll be happier taking better care of fewer plants, and displaying them more attractively.
I’ve grown jewel orchids including macodes under low humidity for a long time but watering them properly can be difficult as the soil alternates between too dry and too wet, and they really hate both. So I’m planning to move them into a terrarium very soon. The correct identification for that “Macodes lowii” is probably Dossinia marmarota x Macodes sanderiana but this is just a guess!
Do you have your plants in pots or they just planted in substrate in the tank? I bought a 20 gal a while back and want to use it for plants instead. Also do you think the included light would be sufficient or would you need to supplement with an actual grow light?
@@Bramblerose21 Right now I have mine in pots but my plan is to eventually plant them as a terrarium....I have surrounded the pots with some sphagnum moss to help with humidity. The light I have is an old aquarium grow light by Fluval
@@klcpca oh cool beans! Thinking about it I’ll try reviving a couple of plants that aren’t doing so hot rn in my unused 5 gal. It already has some gravel and a light already. Cleaning it up and finding a spot for it might be todays project. And a good trial run before I run and get new plants for the 20 gal. Thanks for the advice! :)
Flip the base over and set on a big clear yogurt tub lid or a plate and you don’t have to use the SaranWrap. Also you could use clear silicone to buildup the edges to seal off the IKEA terrariums.
I do the same with bark on top with my terrestrials - I hate the way the perlite goes brown and yucky after a few weeks! It looks so so much better with a thin layer of bark. ❤️
Wow! Those macodes orchids look like bushes compare to mine. I didn’t know they could grow as big! I’ve already purchased two mini cake plates with a dome /instead of cloches/. You are always full of great ideas. Thank you so so much for yet another inspiration.
How to avoid stem rot? I've lost quite a few to stem rot. I typically use bottom wicking , and notice the rot tends to happens when I shorten the wicking distance or suddenly move it to a sealed environment. I've tried snipping it off above the rotted area and replanting in fresh spagnum and under a dome for 90+% humidity, but none of these cuttings have ever rooted. The cut end shrivels or rots and moves up higher and higher, the rest of the stem gets thinner and everything eventually dries up before any roots form.

I just got my Jeweled Orchid, and im so excited to keep it. This video is just what i needed. I appreciate you!
Just a suggestion for your vase with the Suran wrap...you could use a plate and put the vase upside down on it to make a cloche.
I came here to say that! 😂
I have 8 different jewel orchids, took me a while to collect them but I'm so glad I got them

Agreed, that looks very much like a Dossinodes. I have both Macodes lowii and Dossinodes and this looks just like the latter.
I grow mine in a 20 gallon long fish tank with a lid and grow light.... works beautifully 😊 I love the way you layered the different dishes!!!

It’s so beautiful Danny!
You are so creative!!
Thank you for sharing it
Oh wow they are stunning looking plants. might have to go on the wish list. Your mini green house is cool too.
I'm going to try this with my jewel orchid. Thank you for sharing this video.
I saw a big bell cloche at the dollar tree would be a perfect little greenhouse for this set up.
must try jewel orchids one day 🥰🥰, given my garden is medium in humidity, but an enclosure is really something to try, thanks MOG 🤩
I keep them out in the open air at home at 65F and 55F in the winter and 60-70% humidity. seems fine to me, had it four years
These are really great ideas. Thanks for sharing this video. 🤗👏❤️

So beautiful!!! I have to find some.
I think the M lowii is Dosinia marmorata
