  • This video is about how to tune or set up the Bubble Magus Curve 5 protein skimmer. This video also helps with all other skimmers. Im using this skimmer for my 75 gallon reef tank. I have all types of soft coral, lps coral, and sps coral. I have a small bioload in this tank and the skimmer still pulls out a lot of skimmate.

I just bought a Curve 7 skimmer. This video came out at the perfect time. I could not figure out how to break this thing in. I just noticed tonight that the adjustment pipe has a black dot like yours. Now I have it set to max! Thank you sir for your help!

Talk about timing! I got the extreme 5 for a 1/3 of the price of its competitors, despite the negative reviews. I pulled the plug and got one after watching this video. I dare say the negative reviews were related to this issue.

Another great video Billy! I've had my curve 5 for about a year and it's been literally maintenance free. Today I cleaned the entire rig and found the air venturi (white plastic nozzle on bottom of skimmer) was partially plugged. Cleaned it out with a dental pick and it's like new again. Just an FYI. Hope new tank is up and well - best always!

I have an essops and cant keep it skimming! I dont have a cap on the adjuster and It dosnt say which way is lifting it! I dont have an ato so could that be why? I like the foam to build up and fall like you do so maybe because it keeps stopping and starting is the problem since I fill by hand! Very informative video and I cant believe no one has explained it this way! I am definitely buying an ato now because I am pretty sure thats the problem! Do I need a cap though because I bought it used and is the rule of thumb left lowers the bubbles? One thing I have noticed as well is I have to have the water level higher then I used to! What does that indicate? Oh, does putting hands in tank stop the skimming? I red that some where and that could also be part of the problem!

Het Bud, Great explanation on the Curve 5! I'm thinking of getting a protein skimmer for my 75-gallon tank (total around 100-110 gallons with the sump). I noticed you mentioned that you replaced your Curve 5 with the Reef Octo Essence S-130 in one of your comments. Can you please recommend which one you think would be better for my setup, the Curve 5 or the Reef Octo Essence S-130? Thanks!

How do you think the curve 5 performed long term in your 75gal? It’s rated for 140gal so I thought it should be more than adequate but after looking back on aquacave website where I ordered it, in the description section I noticed it says only recommended to 65gal! I’ll be at 95gal including my sump. Should I return it? Thanks Billy!

    • @BillyPipes

It's crazy... I've watched several videos for the Elite 5, and read a bunch of reviews. Some of the videos say to run it 9.5-11 as directed, while some, such as you suggest, say to run it at 8.5-9. However, several reviews on saltwater aquarium say they got the best results running it at 7.5. It seems like this Skimmer has a lot of variance...
