- Short video going over modifications to the Yaesu FT817ND to allow transmit over 1.8 - 33mhz , 33 -56mhz , 140 -154 mhz,and 420 - 470 mhz. And the results therof. For educational purposes only and not an endorsement of use of a transmitter outside of it's type acceptance or operation outside of license privileges.
Awesome info, thanks for the instruction. I hear you about those magnifiers....eyes start going downhill after 40!
You are welcome and thank you. Things do get blurry almost overnight and brother I fought it tooth and nail. I was reading stuff at full arms length when someone finally convinced me to get readers. Pardon the pun but it was a real eye opener. Thanks for watching !
Thanks for sharing this information. I have a 817ND and really like the little radio. Not sure if I will mod it or not, but it is nice to know and have the right instructions which I did find the instructions just like what you showed. I was reading thru your comments about the 9:1 unun and 35 feet of wire, I have the same antenna and use it for Parks On The Air (POTA) and it worked great for me. The only difference is I did put a 26 foot counterpoise on it instead of using 20 to 30 feet of coax to the radio. Again great instructional video. Juddie WD8WV
You are welcome. I did the mod for curiosity sake mostly. I agree with the counterpoise use. It does help IMHO. Thank you and thanks for watching !
SurvivalComms thanks for replying. I sub’d to your channel. I am going to check out your uBitx videos! I built one myself and have the touch screen mod done to it. I even built my own enclosure. I have another uBitx to build, the Version 4. My first one was the Version 3 and I really like it. I have even built a Bitx40, an earlier one that didn’t have the raduino. So I ordered a QRP-Labs VFO/Signal Generator so I could have a 2 line display to see what frequency I was on. 73 WD8WV
Very cool and welcome aboard ! It is a really cool radio for the price point. Thanks for watching !
Incredibly useful video. I was going to buy one of these and mod it as a do-everything radio but no way if it won't do marine or FRS.
They definitely are limited in V/UHF capability out of band. Good for CAP/MARS but as you said as a one size fits all they fall short. Thanks for watching !
I love this stuff but I'll never do videos on it. I'm terrible at teaching stuff like this. great video. thanks brother
It can be tedious stuff. I didn't decide to video it until I was about to start lifting jumper 5. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching !
Thanks so much for a very useful tutorial 👍.
You are welcome ! Thanks for watching !
BTW this mod is necessary on older rigs to allow coverage of 60 meters. Good video. Thanks!
You are welcome and that definitely makes it a worthwhile modification IMHO. Thank you for watching !
It's also necessary to get full 2 meter band with a transverter.
I have an introductory model European version.. Would this mod work or is it a roll of the dice? 😁
Super useful video. Loved it, THANK YOU!!!
You are welcome ! Thank you and thanks for watching !
FT817 and FT817ND will become a Classic/Collectible. It's such a versatile radio for all sorts of situations. It goes well with Tokyo HI Power 45W HF amp. BTW, after you desolder jumper 5, and bridge 1 and 2, be sure to reset your radio by holding down [F]+[V/M] buttons while powering it back on for full TX across all bands.
Yes it is. Thanks for watching !
Hi - I just did this mod on my FT818Nd and can confirm that it works fine too. Thanks
That's good thanks for watching and letting us know it works on the 818
Can you give any link to documents or make a video of what you did that would be awesome
@@aaronm8351 I take exactly steps as they described in this video but be aware... all part are supertiny / small so despite i am able to work with soldering gun i decided to not do it by myself but my friend who is a soldering professional did it.
Thanks. Two sources (including this video and another on the 818) say to have the four left jumpers closed, while another guide on-line said only the first three on the left should be closed.
Did those 5MHz channels in the memory go away?
My mom used to get mad when I opened up or gutted, downsized electrical or electronic things around the house. Haven't received my unit yet and I'm buying wick today. HI mom!
LOL Thanks for watching !
Hi Julian, thanks for the videos. Can you comment on if you have had problems running with the amp you mentioned with digital and the tuner you mentioned in line? The tuner manual cautions against a full key at that power. I'm assuming you have not ran into any issues. Thanks agn.
hi my friend thanks for the video very very good
Thank you and thanks for watching !
Thank you! It would be a miracle to have some mod to extend the upper VHF limit.
Unfortunately they don't expand far in VHF /UHF. Thanks for watching !
esta modificacion transmite en 11m y en uhf en la banda de los talk about gracias
Anything above -125dBm, is a good receiver for practical purposes.
The S meter is not a good indicator, as the receiver received well below the S meter action. If I have RX issues on UHF, I can install a GaAsFET amplifier.
Low noise figure brings the useable signal down to -125 dBm with ease.
Thanks for watching !
Can i use a LAN CABLE (8pin) to connect MIC to TRX instead of the official cable that was broken?
Yes you can. IIRC the cable is straight through and doesn't cross over anywhere. Check the pinout to be sure. Thanks for watching !
What are the minus figures after the MHZ figures, is that output power in watts ?
On the whiteboard that was the carrier power measured on a service monitor. Thanks for watching !
Colleague a question how to see the power (Watts) that is configured the FT817? And how can I leave it configured to change like this, for example 144,150 then 144,501 144,152
the specs are on the Yaesu site 5w max, step sizes are 10hz CW/SSB and 100hz AM/FM Thanks for watching !
I tried this modification and my radio will not power up. Am I missing something?
Does this work on the 818 ? I saw mod on the web but it didn't state full hf coverage. Thanks
I have been told in the comments here that it works fine on the 818 while some one else made mention that it did not. I personally have not tried it and success may depend on which market your radio was made for. I hope this helps ! Thanks for watching !
Hello, I just purchased an 817ND with the mod and was curious what it does. I want to thank you since now I have a better understanding of the Mod itself. I was curious as to the bracket around the radio. Who makes it, and do you have a source to get one? Thanks again and 73s!
Mike
The mod expands the transmit ranges of the radio. Portable zero makes the brackets I have installed and Chameleon antennas makes a really heavy duty set. You can find both vendors online. Thanks for watching !
Thank you SC, I sure appreciate the reply. Stay safe out there and enjoy your Thanksgiving Holiday
You are welcome ! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours !
I only want Hf opened tx. Would this make my auto repeater offset go away? Anyone know?
Yes in my radio I did lose automatic repeater offset. Thanks for watching !
I have a Japanese model 818ND that wont transmit from 146-148Mhz on VHF and 440-450Mhz on UHF. I wonder if this mod will fix that.
The jumper configuration is what dictates the ranges IIRC. - Check the jumper configuration as it is now and compare it to the configuration of a US market radio. Thanks for watching !
Recognise this is an old video - I have looked into various mods on handhelds as I would love a radio to communicate on UHF, but also occasionally on true AM airband. As a paraglider pilot, generally chatting with ground instructors or other pilots on UHF but if flying cross country through controlled airspace, permission may be required via AM transmission on airband. After this modification to this model, is the TX actually AM, or transmitting FM on those frequencies? (seems like the latter is most likely based on forums). Cheers
It will TX AM but does NOT cover the aviation band. Even if it did you should never use a modified HAM radio. Use a radio type accepted for Part 87 service. Best option IMHO for your application is a Team Wendy radio chest pack that holds two portable radios (one for UHF and one type accepted for airband). Thanks for watching !
@@survivalcomms thanks for the reply! Yes understood, just trying to avoid the faff of 2 radios!
@@williamstewart4194 I truly understand . If someone builds a multimode portable part 87 / part 90 they would sell many.
Which technique did you use to split jumper #5?
I used a wick Thanks for watching !
Excelente video eu tenho um igual o seu, pode me dizer qual o ano de fabricação? Comprei usado e estou curioso pra saber a idade dele. Grato
2014 I hope this helps ! Thanks for watching !
@@survivalcomms thank you
Hello, and thank you for the video!
Damn, did I make a mistake by buying a pure 11 meter band /cb radio (president grant 2 premium) when I also want to be able to RX/TX on HF and VHF portable?
This video let me think so, or shall I keep it for portable 11 meter uses and get the FT817ND used on ebay for the bands without doing the modification you are describing here? I've read that it is maybe not good for the device to use it on non ham bands. *sigh*
looks like FT817 can't go over 154MHz with or without the mod, am I correct?
Yes that is correct. I have not encountered a version that has been able to exceed that with or without modification. Thanks for watching !

Yaesu vx6 after mod opens up on 6m, 1.25m, 2m: 136-170, 70cm: 420-550.
well now that we have 818 is it going to be the same procedure on it or not known yet?
I am not positive if it is the same modification or not. I would tend to think it is but I am not certain and have not tried it. If I had one and it was out of warranty I would be tempted to open it up and see if the layout is the same. Thanks for watching !
Hi. I have a 1 question. Working this mod on new FT-818ND? Thx for answer. :-) Have a nice day.
I am not certain. I have not heard that it would not however. Thanks for watching !
SurvivalComms Today i apply this mod on my new FT-818ND and working all ok. ;-)
That's good news ! Now we know it works on the newer models. Thanks for letting us know !
to answer the question
Likely no given the current Gen radios as they are digital only
I followed another tutorial initially for my 818ND and the mod didn't work and this was a well documented mod.
I followed this one earlier and now I have access to the CB channels, which is all I wanted to go with the amateur stuff.
I suppose it depends where your radio is from etc...
Now I have an amateur band plan on as my wallpaper so I know exactly where and where I can't go.
Will this mod allow for Tx in the 1.25m band?
No it will not - there is very little gained in VHF and UHF expansion capability in this radio's design. I outline the ranges in the video. Thanks for watching !
Do you happen to know if there is a method to expand the freq range on VHF to 174MHz?
That is outside of the capabilities of this radio. Thanks for watching !
@@survivalcomms Thank you!
I can't seem to find a conclusive answer on the web. Does the FT-818nd transmit on the CB bands. In other words, is it a nice radio to start out on free CB bands and then move up to a licence?
Yes it will but I would not recommend doing such . Its pretty expensive for a freeband rig and outside of frequency flexibility . Thanks for watching !
Hi my friend can you share the documents to this modification? Regds
I was really hoping after a mod this radio could do it all... all commonly used HF,VHF and UHF, disappointing that it will not do marine band.
spldrong Yes the vhf uhf coverage is lacking. Thanks for watching
SurvivalComms do you know anything about a modified FT-857d? Does it have better coverage?
spldrong it is reported that it would cover up to 167 mhz on vhf. I have never modded one myself. The IC 703 / IC 706 is a good radio on the used market to consider IMHO.
@@spldrong nope. its exactly the same..
Will this mod open the CB frequencies ?
Yes the video gives details on what will be covered post modification. Thanks for watching !
Does this work on the FT-818? & it will work on 11 meters?
I have heard that it does work on the 818 but I have not had the opportunity to confirm it. I can tell you that the radio (817) will work on 11 meters after the mod. Thanks for watching !
Yes, it's the same
Thanks.
You are welcome thanks for watching !
After modification radio lost the ARS function. Is there any fix to enable ARS function again?
Undo the modification and you will get ARS back. Thanks for watching !
Is that the only function lost was the repeat function? I take it manual repeater shift option is still available?
@@andrewjhood that was all I lost. Loss of ARS functionality is pretty consistent with these mods
The Hi Q of the chebyshev filters will not allow much in the way of frequency excursions. Radios that can transmit on very wide swaths of spectrum ( like the old baofengs) could do so because they really haven't got the filters that make them clean. There are limits to the band width of the ferrite transformers used in the transmitters, which is the other issue. Its easy to make a pretty wide band transistor linear HF amp if you don't care if it is clean. Cheap cb bricks are the classic example of filthy amplifiers with no filters. Class C (fm) amplifiers same deal when they are broad band. One might by-pass the filters in the low and hi band vhf sections and achieve some boafeng like tx.. but how shitty would t be.? shitty enough to be illegal and grungy. unless you want to own grunge generator... whats the point ? In an emergency, when other wise illegal operation is sometimes tolerated for a moment... it would be swell f the 817 had the ability to communicate with aircraft. No single change would be more useful. But it simply aint possible. During flood or earthquake.. its the one capability we'd like. The RX in the aircraft band is swell though.
I went looking for the document you mentioned but can’t find it… do you have a link? 🙏🏻
a simple search turned this up

@@bradl2636 I am not sure
i have a beofeng (if thats how its spelled lol) its a hand held can you do a video on that? i brought it thinking the BIG BLACK OUT was coming but i've had no luck with it. comms is not my strong suit but i would like to at least learn how to contact somebody if ever needed. pls help thanks. p.s i could even send it to you if needed.
There are a bunch of Baofeng videos out there and if I'm not mistaken they are probably the most popular portable radio out there. They are a lot of radio for the price point. You have the UV5R ?
SurvivalComms yes i do its the better one thats sold on amazon. there are tons of videos but the way you explain on this video it made it easy to understand.
Have you programmed it yet ?
SurvivalComms , no i haven't. i dont have a ham radio lic but i still want it set up. its just all too confusing
You can find frequencies to listen to on Radioreference.com. It is my belief that someone starting from square one would greatly benefit from a ham radio course and getting their tech license. You can search for amateur radio clubs in your area and next weekend is field day so that would be a great way get some questions answered in person. Dave Casler's channel has his online technician training playlist on his channel :

I hope this helps !
Hi. I tried this with my new Yeasu FT-818nd (2021). I reset the CPU but I´m still not able to TX 11 meters
Just has someone comment yesterday that it did on his 818 variant.
@@survivalcomms i removed the fith bridge and bridged the four ones from the left. But there are still some bridges remaining. So i will try to remove them, too
Were you able to get it working?
im also having this issue, i followed the mod but 11meter TX is locked... Were you able to it to work?
I sended my radio to a spezialist and he made it work. But he was angry with me for triying myself xD
After this mod. Will this Tx/Rx at 478.400 up to 479.000 ?
No it will not . I list the frequency limits in the video and they are very tight. Performance really suffers after 462 mhz as well.
@@survivalcomms thx
can you do it on ft 857?

We can't TX more high than 154 ?
The radio is very limited in out of band coverage for VHF / UHF unfortunately. Thanks for watching !
i did this and i can not tx on 70cm
What country version is your radio ? What frequencies are you looking to operate on ? The radio will only do limited ranges out side of the 2 and 70cm bands as I discussed in the video. Thanks for watching !
Oh wow, I wasn't expecting a comment back. Unfortunately, what happened, I do believe, is I got swindled into a european model. I purchased it from eBay within the United States, and It has a european Region lock, I do believe. I've already tried to do the extended TX jumpers mod, and I still git the TX error. I'm currently trying to contact yaesu to see if I can send it in for a "repair." Of course, I am always willing to experiment. I just bought a cat cable. And i'm going to see if I can reprogram the eprom. I'm a bit hesitant to do it.
I am hoping to operate on the standard USA Frequencies. full range given by the fcc for HF VHF and UHF.
UHF currently operates at 430-440
VHF is 144-146.
I have not tried HF. I am currently trying to find all of my dummy loads and my bird slugs to do further testing to see if there are any other issues.
It's actually really quite interesting. I stayed up a little later than I should have. I took a looked at the electrical schematic. It looks like pin 1 2 3 may stand for regions. That may be why they are labeled as user. Pin four and pin five are labeled SRX and STX Maybe for strict. I can't figure out what pin five would be (EXP) or pin 7 TSO 8 TS1 and 9 TS2. Though from the forms, it looks like pin 9 is of Alaska emergency TX. I'm not 100% ill need to look at the Eprom.
@@Teararec There are differences in the regions but I have not studied what the precise differences are. Please let me know what you find out.
