    Thanks Brett. I just wanted to check the work of the previous owner while cleaning and tightening all of the grounding points. I noticed some of the copper ground springy tabs are not well aligned, I also polished up the surfaces they contact. I checked all board screws to ground too. I had the radio in pieces to replace D113 as it was leaky and stopping the PA port aux ppt switch to ground at the rear of the radio from functioning. If anyone has to replace D113 then let me say it's not for beginners. I got it in without any trouble but it's one of the smallest components I've had to work with with some limited access.

    This has been unbelievably helpful to a complete beginner! Questions. How reliable is NVIS during daylight hours? Is it less effective at night or is it a simple matter of switching frequencies....Say 80m to 40?? I am looking at using a NVIS valley to valley with a mountain in between. 5 miles absolute maximum horizonal distance. Am I better off to go with a completely horizontal antenna for my application? What about power requirements? Throw in bad (wet) weather? Ideally a 5 watt compact/lightweight rig would work best for my application, but I could pack a more potent rig if need be. I'm not quite ready for CW and the guy on the other radio is still working on his license. Since you folks seem experienced Ham types...More questions! :) Does ground wave work at the 2-5 miles I am looking for in the mountains? I have gotten mixed answers on this? Does this means it might work depending on soils rock formations etc? Thank you in advance!

    • @survivalcomms
      @survivalcomms 21 день тому

      You are welcome. Lower frequencies become more noisy during the day time so going from 80 to 40 will help anything over 10mhz does not NVIS reliably. Vertical antennas do not NVIS well. A simple wire dipole will work. A 12v gel cell battery will be fine. You are going to have to experiment to see what works for you as far as what works. Nobody but you can see what will or will not work. Thanks for watching !

      Fortunately 142 has a teflon dielectric which is very forgiving. When doing 58 or 223 you must flux it and hit it quick when you see the solder wick into the hole remove the heat fast. Thanks for watching !

      @@survivalcomms I do IPC J-STD class 3 connectors for aircraft. ALWAYS use flux regardless of the connector. Also always pre tin the wires and connector. Gold embrittlement is a major issue so always double tin/solder wick any gold plated connectors to ensure there's no gold left on the soldering surface. Only use an RMA flux and compatible RMA solder for connection that can't be fully cleaned like stranded wire or connectors like this.

    Good review. Like you, I have 3 decades of public safety experience, vast majority using Motorola equipment but my present agency utilizes Harris (my issued portable is a XL200P). I am also a licensed HAM operator, and all of my personal 2m (VHF) and 70cm(UHF) equipment is Motorola....some legacy, some current run, with my favorite being my APX7000 (VHF/UHF). Only wished the APX would do DMR, which is really my only criticism of the APX. I'm going to have the opportunity trial a Harris XL400,but it is indeed like a brick. It appears overall, Motorola did a better job on their APX Next NFPA 1802 portable. Thanks for the review!

Also replaced ingition switch. Still no spark. When I got it home after it stopped running I pulled the spark plug their wasn't much left. Someone said crank sensor but still can't find it on the motor. Just don't know how much these boxes are,, this ranger is like a money pit . One thing it did do is eat up the spark plug like it got a power surge, because the center of the plug was gone like it was fried. I'm at my wits end. Hunting season is coming up and that's how I get around, and I welded a winch on the back roll cage to do the heavy lifting for me. I'm going to check the PDM box next and thanks for getting back to me

    Found the Mayday II at a thrift store today with faux leather case, antenna mount, antenna whip, minty condition for $2 Works with 10 AA batteries and a USB to power plug compatible with power port. Have not had a chance yet to test it outside of turning it on LOL =D
