  • Another semester in Ashland is completed, which means another best-of video from the area on the low-end RF&P. Starting out in early February, the track Geometry train was the first train for the best of video. The crew on board was doing surveying during its pass which had the lights illuminating the town off the back end.
Feb 14th was the first time when foreign power reached Ashland, a Canadian Pacific ES44 came south on Q703. February 25th was more of a surprise than I imagined, Q400 was rolling north with what looked like by the clouds behind a steam engine trailing. GP40-2 6159 with a blown turbo rolling coal northbound, proceeding to fill the town with the smell of oil. I ended up seeing Q400 before seeing Q031 with a Canadian National visitor, the first time of two that this occurred in the spring.
Feb 26th was another interesting day, right after a fresh snowfall I heard that Amtrak 98 was bringing the first Amtrak viewliner baggage cars into service. I came out to hear the dispatcher giving an EC-1 to a northbound freight for a false partial activation within town. Sure enough, at the Myrtle Street one of the crossing gates was lying on its side in the middle of the road. Q400 and P098 both had to flag the crossing before continuing north. 98 was a whopping 8 hours late when he passed just a little after 11:30 am.
March 17th gave me my "have you ever" moment for the semester. W863 came through going southbound with 2 Kansas City Southern and a TFM units. Other than that highlights include seeing the CSX safety train as well as other EMD power on various trains.
The only clip shown away from in Ashland is on the Peninsula subdivision at the Ft Lee Signals. This was in order to lens a W862 with the NS Veterans SD60E locomotive. This unit was coming back from Ft Eustis where it was involved in a celebration on the base.
Another great semester in the books, depending on how the fall goes I may or may not do another best-of video, but it all depends on what happens. We'll cross that bridge when we get there.
    ...End of Transmission...

Wow, can't ask for anything much better than this! From crazy power, to a down gate. And new baggage cars to CSX's first ever steam engine, it just makes it an absolute joy to watch. Even better, it comes from my favorite place in the world. 5 stars man.
