Woohoo! I was absolutely thrilled to have my "Frankengravel" make the thumbnail. I should have clarified that URT stands for unified rear triangle, a design that was so popular in the 90's. They were notorious for what was called "stink bug" effect when applying the rear brake. It may look a bit ugly, but this bike rides great on gravel and dirt roads. @calvinstorer It's very similar to the Catamount, but this is an actual USA made steel Barracuda frame. It was the last year of Barracuda before Ross Bicycles, the parent company, disbanded the brand. There were numerous brands who made their version of a URT frame; Klein, Trek, Schwinn, Ibis (made two), etc.
Hey a Barracuda Cuda Cat XC! I have one of those waiting a build! I did have it "built" with an eccentric rear hub to run as a single speed and thought "yeah, this is worth building". Unfortunately I moved house and did some other stuff and it's sat for 10 years. Thanks, I'm inspired to build it up this year... when I finish my GT RTS.
@sirbarryvee-eight6485 Awesome! I have owned 2 GT RTS's, a '93 RTS 2 and a '96 Team RTS. I absolutely loved those bikes. The RTS I purchased new in 1993 and took it to Moab in 1994, even took it on the Portal Trail. Too bad both frames eventually cracked, the 2 had one of the tabs the rocker link pivoted on broke off. The Team frame cracked after nearly 6 years of riding along the edge of the weld at the seat stay and seat tube pivot. So be aware of these two spots, especially on old aluminum frames which can work harden over time.

As the owner of the Barracuda "Frankengravel" build, I thought for sure Rob would have picked your Gary Fisher. It's a really beautiful bike, you did it right.

@Black_forest_oldschool The bottle cage placement was copied from many bikepackers before me, but was also a bit of necessity. The Barracuda XC frame has one set of bottle bosses on the underside of the downtube and I used it for a small cargo cage. The Carver fork only has a single rivnut on each leg, so I used a hose clamp on one side of the cage. Another copied idea from the YT channel LocoJoe. Thanks again.
When I built this up, my thinking was why not, because people are spending nearly $200 on suspension seatposts for their gravel bikes. I am far from finished with the Barracuda because I keep thinking of more mods to make. Soon after Oldshovel posted his video I installed a Ritchey Kyote bars with XL extra chunky ESI grips. I actually bought this frame as new, still in the factory wrapping for $100.
Hi Rob, I have a question to ask to you and/or the second of today's rebuilders: What kind of "extension" did you use in the rear derailleur, as you say, "to fit the 11-42T" cassette? I just ran into this problem while rebuilding a 1996 GF Mt Tam, and I would love your input, it's the only outstanding issue. Thanks and happy trails! 🙏🙏
why am I hearing french language at the 5 minute mark? then german, then italian, oh my computer took a dump. I had to reboot, now back to normal in english.

To me the Barracuda looks more similar to a 1995 Schwinn Homegrown ! ..but tbh it looks realy funky and I like it !
