Also, my Bosch eMTB uses a rotor mounted magnet for the speed sensor (Mondraker Crafty R) so not all Bosch ebikes need the valve sensor.
Many motors have no internal maintenance so there is no cost. For Brose you'd want to replace the belt every 1000km just in case so it doesn't blow up on you during a ride. But Shimano and Bosch there is no maintenance.

1st thing that goes on a bike for me is a derailleur bash guard. Ive bent so many hangars, it doesnt take much force. Stupid component if you ask me, dont bend them with the bashguard on. I think they originially were made to stop from breaking the derailleur, now you still need it to stop from breaking the hangar which is easier to bend.
Nice video! Hopefully bike manufacturers will stop using those headsets with internal cable routing! Headsets without cables running through them are so much cleaner and waterproof.
I love being in Canada for bike service. Im disabled, my bike is no different than a wheelchair to the government, every bike service I pay for can be written off on taxes as a medical expense. One friend submerged the motor on his 10,000,00 EMTB..............once, in one day, silty water got inside and now he ignores the noise it makes like it will go away. Ive ran my dirtbikes up to the muffler in water with minimal problems, EMTB is not like that.

Same here. Only I’ve got 7000 miles on mine! But I did upgrade to SRAM X01 AXS derailleur and dropper about half way through. Plus a couple of chains, cassettes and tires! Oh, I did blow out a few spokes so there was a wheel rebuild in there plus break pads. But that was all done at a regular bike shop! They know nothing re the electronics! And this is just a $4k Luna Z1 I bought 3-4yr ago! Only problem I ever had was a dropper cable snap and funky derailleur. Replaced with wireless. That are pricy but great! I probably wash it twice a yr! But now I’m a little nervous!
You haven't checked the linkage bearings. You checked how the rear triangle moves only. If water was in the headset bearings the same happens to linkage bearings. Corrosion kills them first, wear second. Undo all linkage bolts, remove all bearing covers and inspect the bearing internals - clean and regrease them. 66£ for pads is RRP. They are available online for way less. On many motors the pins in the plugs are very thin and tend to corrode and break. Some of the motor cables are hard to get - it makes sense to check the plugs for corrosion .
Great video, really enjoying the Don on embn. Great over view video, and chance of full detail for each job (over time). "Don in the garage" type videos, just a suggestion. Keep up the great work.
If folks want a rough guide on running costs, expect £1 per mile for all weather all off road use. I didn't believe it would cost that much when I bought mine but it's 2 years old now with 2000 miles on it and I'll easily have spent £2k maintaining it all considered.
From 8 different bikes the average cost of an ebike is about 1€ per 3km of maintenance cost. Usually spend around 1000€ a year of maintenance riding almost 4000km. 2 sets of tires are the biggest cost at 70€ per pop so about 340€ a year. 9 derailleurs for 3 bikes in 3 years. Usually 3 derailleurs, 1 cassette, 2-3 chains per year. One rear wheel per year. Others chain oil, tubeless sealant, suspension oil. Then some shop costs do most myself. Broken cams, pedals, dropper. About 3000€ maintenance and broken parts these last 2 years for me for 2 ebikes and 7700km. Which is 2,56km per 1€. For 3 years, 3 bikes and 8800km 9 derailleurs, 2 cassettes, 6 chains, 1 front ring, 2 rear wheels, 9 tires, 1 dropper, 1 camset, rest maintenance costs totaling around 3800€. 0 brake pads although I have bought spares but just don't wear them at all in normal trail riding where you rarely hang on the brakes.
The derailleur has clutch and it definitely makes sense to service that because it tends to corrode and freezes the cage. If you opened the hubs you should open the bearings - same as the headset.
As a follow on can you do a tools to do those jobs cost. Living out in the Inner Hebrides with no LBS on the door step I have had to learn to do a whole load of service/repairs myself. I Have one and the Headset of this bike is from acros and with internal cable routing. Due to the stopblock mechanism the lower bearing makes some noise. I would like to replace for a cane creek or something like that the headset but it's not an easy job due to the integrated cable system. Any suggestion?
Man I am so bad with this kind of think, I leave it to the shop at great expense. I wish there was a course or something I could go on. I checked but they cost thousands 😂
The one on the Canyon looks to be the Ergon SM E-mountain core prime saddle. I have the "sport" version and there is also a pro version. Comfiest saddles I've ever ridden with by far.
The amount of water ingress on the battery and motor is ridiculous!.. I liv in the pennines and have a Marin E2 and ride in wet weather most of the time and I don't get any where near the amount of water ingress that bike has after 400miles..wowzers!
You either need to be handy with the spanners or bite the bullet and pay for it to be done, that tyre cost nearly as much as a tyre for my van, i don't know how these companies justify the cost of some of the parts they sell.
I think it was 400km so about 300miles. Yeah you definitely don't need to do many of these so often. But 77€ per 400km is not bad for maintenance cost. I would definitely not replace the seals every 400km I would do 1200km. And I would not replace the chain link. So that's about half off the price. Although if it's an X2 maybe you want to take better care of the shock but for Float X does fine for over 1000km with the seals.
I’m surprised that he did only 400mi in six months. I’ve done over 10000km each year for the two years I’ve had mine. The owner of the local bike shop does 20000km a year. What would you guys consider to be heavy mileage?
The final price is quite misleading. -Brake pins and olives -All oils for: Brakes, Suspensions + greases used to lubricate bearings They are also not cheap or free How many hours were worked to do all these things?
shop around for your brake pads, I buy a bag of 20 pairs, you only get the pads but they work out at £7 a pair, and they're the real thing, SRAM in my case and not knock-offs!
The cost of parts and the cost of labour to repair a damaged or faulty E bike, particularly one with electrical faults, is much more than anyone gives it credit for. The work is fiddly. The diagnosis is often time-consuming. The parts are expensive, often unavailable and very specific to the make and model. Some cars are cheaper to keep on the road than some E bikes.
Im thinking my KTM's are cheaper to keep working than a hard ridden EMTB. I do not ride my EMTB in water at all. Some splash is fine but no water crossings. These are fragile expensive bikes. Kind of like modern dirtbikes are all 4 strokes now and wear out quick and cost 5 times to fix what a 2 stroke costs to fix. Used? They are worth nothing. They can be hand grenades.
That internal routing, worst freaking idea ever, so glad neither one of my bikes have this terrible design. I for one do all the work on my bikes as I also have the tools and access to software, and like yourself recovering from a wrist injury so a few weeks to go on that one, looking forward to getting my servicing done for summer..
They cost loads….. chain sets tires bearings all wear out in double time (cos you ride it twice as much) fork and air can service every 3 WEEKS! There i’ve saved you 20 minutes YW
How many hours did it take... what's your personal hourly rate? What does your local shop charge... time is money. Don't wash your ebike so much, especially if it has thru-bearing headset cables. Because that is gonna be very expensive every few hundred miles.

Once you factor in all of the tooling, greases, sprays, etc, it’s a costly job. Only over the years will it save you money once you have outlayed the set up costs.
Well, these attempts at generalizing service timelines has too many variables to be of much use . Different bikes different components , motors ,brakes etc different riding styles different weather Different terrain etc etc . i have a six year old bike that i ride just for recreation and always in perfect weather 😂 it has only 1600 km on it and the only thing i replaced was a back tire. even my magura mt5 brake pads still look ok ,which illustrates my point about riding style . my motor is super powerful 112 NM but there is no appreciable wear on the front or rear cogs as i don't shift under a load or pedal hard on hills ( mostly becuse i don't have to because of the power of the motor . ) So almost zero maintenance .
400 miles, and all this service? Yikes. My Spectral ON I didnt run a front fender at first, it quickly got a lot of mud and grit in the lower bearing area and was making horrible noises when riding. Popped the fork off cleaned it all and its been all good. I did put a front fender on the thing, stays much cleaner. My EMTB is so fun it has basically got me riding the motorcycles way more, the KTM890R and 690R are going out more. I ride the amish road bicycle the most, or the Intense XC bike.......the Spectral ends up sitting.............but has near zero used value so there it is. Dont buy a nice EMTB with out knowing resale is Zip/squat/nada. And keep it away from water when riding, it destroys expensive parts.

The tip is: motors need service. 2-5k miles, depends on conditions. All plugs and connectors need to be checked for pin corrosion. Remove the battery bracket to check all connectors for corrosion.
10,000 km in two years two batteries at 1000 euro a piece dropper seat kapputt 3 times you have to take the motor out no tools so where I bought it from ,loads of chains and sprockets 😂😂😂 so my resonance too bloody expensive.
@@TCK71 and…creating another problem! Unreal the amount of water that got into the headset and also down into the battery/downtube compartment, and ultimately to the motor. What were the designers thinking?
8:20 and magically the bearings are exposed. Not helpful. 11:10 Tubeless setup but puts tube in? And no commentary. Might as well have just filmed the desk part and said here's what it needed. Plus other than taking the battery out and not servicing the motor, nothing was "e" specific, nothing about frequency of replacement or strain due to "e" vs non-e.
And people wonder why the bike industry is failing. Stupid over complicated expensive bikes and stupid servicing at stupid costs. Can't wait for gates and pinion to be a new norm and bikes reasonably priced with it. Why is the industry pushing ebikes. An extra 3 to 400 dollers in production cost of a motor and battery from suppliers, so they can charge 4 to 5 grand more for a bike. Legit business practice.

I live in New England, ride all year long, and the bike is often just as muddy as your friends pre-cleaned Canyon! So it’s probably due! Do you know of any place in the Boston area?
The most important takeaway in this video is that shiny black latex gloves protect you from the dreaded JH! 🤣
What is that bike hanger that you have in the background with your spare bikes on it? Does anyone know?
What brand were the brake pads you used? I buy off ebay for less than a fiver a pair and they last as long as branded.
I Have one and the Headset of this bike is from acros and with internal cable routing. Due to the stopblock mechanism the lower bearing makes some noise. I would like to replace for a cane creek or something like that the headset but it's not an easy job due to the integrated cable system. Any suggestion?
Is this the canyon model with the cracked battery problem?? Its a big day out to get that fixed...
Non, Bosch motor goes whith Bosch battery, only canyon battery whith Shimano motor have cracks problems😢
Man I am so bad with this kind of think, I leave it to the shop at great expense. I wish there was a course or something I could go on. I checked but they cost thousands 😂
What Ergon seat is that you use???
The one on the Canyon looks to be the Ergon SM E-mountain core prime saddle. I have the "sport" version and there is also a pro version. Comfiest saddles I've ever ridden with by far.
The amount of water ingress on the battery and motor is ridiculous!.. I liv in the pennines and have a Marin E2 and ride in wet weather most of the time and I don't get any where near the amount of water ingress that bike has after 400miles..wowzers!
It would be useful to know the price of all the tools needed to perform this level of servicing.
To do what he did - less than 100£.
cables going into the headset is a nightmare, I absolutely hate them, my first bike with one and it was not fun putting it all back together.
Kind of you to sort Rich’s bike. Especially since he’s been the only one of you doing riding videos for the past month 😂
You either need to be handy with the spanners or bite the bullet and pay for it to be done, that tyre cost nearly as much as a tyre for my van, i don't know how these companies justify the cost of some of the parts they sell.
Seems a bit excessive for only 400 miles of use, even if it has been ridden hard
Sure they are only promoting things)
-Brake pins and olives
-All oils for: Brakes, Suspensions + greases used to lubricate bearings
They are also not cheap or free
How many hours were worked to do all these things?
shop around for your brake pads, I buy a bag of 20 pairs, you only get the pads but they work out at £7 a pair, and they're the real thing, SRAM in my case and not knock-offs!
For the person unrelated to the bike industry/ sponsorship the cost is a lot bigger even for non e bikes.
It's not. Do you want a price list?
Nice one Neil, cheers. Clear & helpful.
Best thing to come out of covid was the end to the Jehovah's Witness knocks at the door. Cheers for the giggle
To do that? About 2h. If you are VERY slow. If you need to replace all bearings apart from the motor it takes 4h.
Good vídeo, lucky rider whith canyon whith Bosch motor an Bosch battery,my spectral ON is OFF since november 2024 waiting for canyon solutions 😢very sad situacion, and im waching all day in this channel canyon comercials 😢😮😢and nobody says nothing about this badnews 🤮🤢😭😭😭😭😭
Good luck, Aitor
Good luck with getting it sorted out. They have mentioned it in a previous vid but I understand your frustration
They did a whole video on it and how to identify the affected battery's.
Still riding mine, I have 3 of the affected barriers and they’re all perfectly fine.
@@Wheelsanstuffbe carefull,i see a spectral photo destroyed totaly from fire and the home garage and other bikes afected in ,be carefull wet weather and battery cracks arent friendly and if your home takes fire canyon dont pay It
First you pay more money than there thay are worth , then pray it doesn't go wrong because it will continue to bleed money
Once you factor in all of the tooling, greases, sprays, etc, it’s a costly job. Only over the years will it save you money once you have outlayed the set up costs.
Well, these attempts at generalizing service timelines has too many variables to be of much use .
Different bikes
different components , motors ,brakes etc
different riding styles
different weather
Different terrain etc etc .
i have a six year old bike that i ride just for recreation and always in perfect weather 😂
it has only 1600 km on it and the only thing i replaced was a back tire.
even my magura mt5 brake pads still look ok ,which illustrates my point about riding style .
my motor is super powerful 112 NM but there is no appreciable wear on the front or rear cogs as i don't shift under a load or pedal hard on hills ( mostly becuse i don't have to because of the power of the motor . )
So almost zero maintenance .
How many hours did all this work take ?
A while to do it for filming but probably around 2 hours work altogether! 2 hours every 6 months isn't too shabby
Neil did you tear down the shock yourself ✌️
I just drop mine off when it needs fixing, then pick it up, swipe my card and hit the trails 🤙
Loving the comment about the Jehovah's witness coming round and not asking what your'e doing with the black gloves on, my next door neighbours one side are Jehovah's and are nosy AF lol. I'll aways have a laugh with them tho 😀👍🏼
Missed out the nightmare of having to take off your brake levers and shifter just to chance a headset bearing 🤦🏻♂️
I Spy a Trials bike in the background..
Yours?..if so ,Where's your videos on riding it?!...
that is not different from a regular bike is it? Probably I was expecting more ebike specific tips and checks...
The tip is: motors need service. 2-5k miles, depends on conditions. All plugs and connectors need to be checked for pin corrosion. Remove the battery bracket to check all connectors for corrosion.
Shout out to the Jahovah’s Witnesses! 😂
10,000 km in two years two batteries at 1000 euro a piece dropper seat kapputt 3 times you have to take the motor out no tools so where I bought it from ,loads of chains and sprockets 😂😂😂 so my resonance too bloody expensive.
😂 black metal latex gloves🤘🏻
Bad for all the water to get it
That headset routing is totally unnecessary, fixing a problem which does not exist................. Good video though.
No. It's not an inner tube. Is a cush-core insert.
If you don't have experience with reparing bikes don't even try something like this....
£66 for MTB brake pads? What are they, gold plated? 🤣
Rule 1 Never wash your ebike, just let the crud dry and brush off with a soft sash brush.
Can't see you getting all that done for £200 in a shop...
Black are nitrile gloves
Cable routing through headset is pure evil 😈 . Bike manufacturers please stick to more weatherproof solutions.
my car costs less to service 🤣
Breaking his wrist to get the peatys logo in when spraying the cassette. Embarrassing.
Less than 400 miles, wtf lol
