Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) do you recommend a brand of indoor soil I can use? I have Natural Organic (yellow bag) but not sure how well it works
Thank you ,Gary, for continuing to do these videos through this difficult time of quarantine. Several people who I’ve given your UA-cam to all have said that your videos are so inspiring to them during this time. I just wanted you to know how much good you’re doing for those of us under quarantine! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing them and I am glad they help people. Maybe we will have many new gardeners down the line. Please visit my seed and garden shop for all your neem, peppermint & rosemary oil, seeds, seed starting needs and more. www.therustedgarden.com. Thanks.
Glad you mentioned the top soil vs garden soil, companies don't always tell you this! We ordered a bunch of TOP soil to level and hopefully grow grass. Turns out the stuff gets literally hard as concrete. I have a video of me smacking it with a sledge hammer and only making small holes. Craziness! Great vid!
Did u not water it enuff. Thats the only way it gets hard like that. Top soil is nothin but screened dirt no rocks. Same stuff as if u just planted ur plants straight into the ground.
CITYFOLK GARDENING nah either way it became rock hard. We found out after the fact that many people have had the same issue. We just live in a tiny area and the next place that does dirt/soil is 60 miles away and costs 200 to deliver.
Can't tell you how incredibly helpful it is (in a plethora of ways) when you take the time to simplify the process for us as you did at 9:52 or so in this video, without making it feel like we'd be giving up on all the fun/expert stuff. Those are the exact moments in your videos that have made the difference between me being too overwhelmed or scared to start the process, and building up the courage to do so in as budget-friendly a way as possible! Thanks!
Thats my goal and glad you are sticking with it. Good luck this year Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
I am doing no dig garden too starting this year. Last year when I started, I used most of the brands you are showing here in the video. It was a good crop last year. Small but productive. Thanks for the video, I feel more comfortable to start this year with what I already have. Much blessings.

When I did my beds for the bottom layer I used some shredded paper, old potting soil and my compost pile that was not mature in other words anything that would eventually decay and enrich the soil. I add a couple of beds a year.
Glad to help. Enjoy your first garden! Please visit my seed and garden shop www.therustedgarden.com for all your seeds, seed starting needs, neem & peppermint oil and more. Thanks!
I built a raised bed last weekend that is up off the ground. I started today with dirt off my land mixed with peatmoss mixed and then with worm casting with the worms I raise. I will be planting soon. Thanks for the video. I hope my garden does good.

Thanks for sharing a great video Gary! I love using that Virgo potting soil mixed with other material. It works great and what I have now. Thanks so much for sharing. I can't wait until I can get my raised beds built. I have to go through the seasons first because we just bought our first house just a few months ago. I'm not sure where the sun will be in the summer yet and that's pretty important because it's really intense here in florida. Thanks again for sharing Gary! Have a beautiful day and stay safe!

Great video. I have been waiting for someone to do a video on HOW MANY bags to buy instead of just guessing, for these raised beds. I love your videos. I take many notes while watching them and have already purchased and used supplies that you have recommended. I want to get a greenstalk vertical tower and I thought I wonder if Gary has any videos on them. So I went through your channel line up and sure enough there it was. Gary is always there to educate and inform. Thank You so much. I tried to order some peppermint oil from your store and the cost was $0.00. I didn't understand that. Of course, I never got the product, but I didn't think I would for free.
Thanks for watching. Hmmm thanks for the order attempt. Sounds like a mistake on the peppermint oil. The worm casting is set to 0.00 because it is just a code to use at their site. 3:40 I've been buying the Black Kow but it's so expensive at $5.27 a bag at Home Depot. Found another product there called "Timerline Manure & Compost". It seemed very rich and organic even more so than the black kow I've seen, however it had several pieces of twig and rocks I had to sift out, but was only $1.89 per bag. I could smell the manure in teh Timberline compared to the Black Kow, so I think the Black Kow is more broken down for sure. One bed has a mix of peat and this timerbline.. like 8 cubic feet of timberline and 3 cubic feat of peat.. I wish I had watched this video before as I mixed it in all together. I'll let you know how it goes.. I just planted 6 cucumber plants in it. I also added Jobe's Organics Vegetable and Tomato granular fertilizer , a bit of compost and worm castings as well. Hopefully the plants will have enough nitrogen.
We moved to our new home 2,000+ miles away from Santa Monica in December and got a late start here on our new property with acres of property including acres of woods. When we were shut in, we decided to go crazy and build many more vegetable beds. We ran out of the raised bed soil and wanted to fill the rest of the many beds with whatever we had on our property. We have chickens and have chicken poop. We have been quick composting since we moved here and have 3, 32-gallon trash cans full of finished compost. Then, over the weekend, we hiked into our woods with 2 wheelbarrows, a couple of shovels, and a fork. we found numerous trees that had fallen and rotted, and we scooped up 11 wheelbarrow loads full of the rotted wood chips. Then, we gathered three more loads of leaf mold in the woods. We put the leaf mold, then the chicken poop, then the compost, and finally the rotted wood chips that looked like dark brown dirt into four of our 8 x 2 raised beds. The raised beds were constructed as dry stack rocks retrieved from the woods. Is this concoction viable for growing vegetables?
Outstanding. Great use of resources. Stay safe. Please Visit my (The Rusted Garden) Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More.
Great videos! I watched both three times trying to get everything right. I like much shorter beds though and maybe use compost without manure and use purchased garden soil that is weed free mixing in organic fertilizers. Use 2x4's or 2x6's. Does this sound ok? Thanks, always look forward to your videos!
That sound great. Good luck. Let me know if you have questions Please visit my seed and garden shop www.therustedgarden.com for all your seeds, seed starting needs, neem & peppermint oil and more. Thanks!

Thank you for your instructional videos. I am new to gardening and have watched a few different channels, but I really enjoy your videos. I brought weed blocking wire (I believe that is what it is called) to put at the bottom of my raised bed. So I was going to lay that first and then cardboard on top. I brought several bags of raised bed soil. My question is do I need to lay the wiring down with cardboard or is hardwood mulch a better option? Also do I need to mix compost with the raised bed soil (I brought Kellogg brand if that helps)?

Buyin the bagged stuff isvery expensive. Its better to go to ur local landscapin place. Buy in bulk much cheaper. You hv to think hw much money u spend on ur garden relatin to wat ur getin back from thst space. For instance i buy mushroom compost at 30 dollars a ton that would fill every one of those beds. Good video! Got a little confused on if I'm supposed to mix the garden soil with the peat moss or if I put the garden soil on top of the compost, then the peat moss on top of the garden soil??
Thank you for the video,I'm a new subsciber ! So many garden video out there and it get expensive! I have a limited space can I use this method for pots , thank you.

Potting soil is for container gardening. And already includes peat moss. When I planted in the ground I found cow manure to smell really really bad. But I had great luck with chicken manure. I mixed the compost and a little manure together. Not a raised bed though. Now I'm renting and I have to actually pay for dirt. It's ridiculous.
So expensive. Please Visit my (The Rusted Garden) Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More.

Hi Gary just wondering if we need to sterilize the garden soil we dig up from our yard before putting it in the bed. Apparently there can be some potential harmful pathogens in garden soil from somewhere I read from. Many thanks.
Not outdoors. You cant really sterilize it to make any difference. Most problems come for air borne spores and insects. I have never run into a bagged pathogen issue. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks again Gary. Can't wait to fill in my new 5 square metres raised bed. And believe it or not it's actually a lot cheaper here in Sydney to get the bagged compost and potting mix than peat moss. Who'd thought peat moss is so expensive here😅
Gary, Have you really never done Hugelkultur?? I find it shocking if you haven't? I was certain that'd be a part of this video upon reading the title. Maybe you've always had the financial means to just purchase tons of bagged soil? I'm genuinely curious. For those who want raised beds, yet also have very limited budgets -- Hugelkultur will simultaneously clean up your yard/property, and if done correctly -- will be next to free and your plants will thrive. Minimal cost. Yes it's more work, but exercise is healthy and vital, and the method will also save you so much money. The possibilities are endless
My taller metal beds have wood in the them but I havent really made a bed with enough depth for large scale HK. Logs etc. However, lots of wood chips in my beds. I have a chipper. Hi Gary, thank you for the video. I watch your videos everyday. I have built my garden bed and I am about to fill. I have 7 beds to fill. Quick question: If I use the earth from my garden to fill the beds along with the peat moss, will the weeds come back?

You mentioned not to use topsoil. What's the reason? I am planning on using topsoil since I have to order some for projects around the house. What adjustment would you recommend if I use too soil?
So some of it in bags is garbage. If you check it out and it seems okay, you can use it. I now recommend people check out the topsoil and if it's decent, mix it like 50-50 with peat. It can make a great mix. Plus support The Rusted Garden by subscribing and using my Amazon Store Front link when shopping for anything on Amazon www.amazon.com/shop/garypilarchiktherustedgarden. Gary, thanks for all the info. I love your videos and the great detail you go into, that is when I'm paying attention to the important details. lol. I'm excited to start my first raised garden bed. I'm making a 4x8 by 10" tall. But, I messed up and didn't hear you say not to use topsoil. Watching the video over again I caught it this time. I wound up getting a bunch of topsoil to mix with peat moss and some humus manure along with some worm castings. Is there anything I can do to use the topsoil or should I just return it?
Congrats on the raised bed. It is okay. I mean if you are mixing in the peat, it can work. You might need more peat. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN ok thanks. I did get some bagged garden soil as well to use in the bed. I also have something called Professional landscape mix I was thinking of using to mix with other stuff as well. Would be awesome to see you make a list on your site of what vegetables can be planted at for spring, summer and fall gardens and when they can be planted from seed or seedlings. For instance, someone had told me that it's too late to plant eggplant from seed now and that you would want to use seedlings. Either way, thanks for everything you do. I'll definitely have to support you by making a few purchases from your website.
Hi Gary I'm starting my balcony garden from seeds for the first time, I've been using grow lights since early February and now my tomato plants are 6- 8 inch tall, I get great SW sun (zone 7a), can I now put these plants on my window sill or do I still need to keep them under the grow lights until I actually put them in containers late next month? Would vermiculite or perlite be used as well? Especially since my natural dirt is sand? Also can I use horse manure? The horses are not vaccinated and they eat organic hay. The owner leaves in a huge pile for the gardeners to pick up. It usually sits in 100 degree weather so it breaks down quickly.
You can add V and P but it really isnt needed. Not sure about vaccination. But manure is fine as long as it is fully composted down. My New YT Channel with Garden Videos 1 minute or less it is called... 60 Seconds or Sow Gardening Shorts: ua-cam.com/channels/qCRvbBUYBcPqZTYWax86aw.html

Gary, Please help!!! i had something like this in my yard... crab grass took over.. it was a garden night mire!!!!! what can i do this time so i don't drown in crab grass.. thanks mike from TENNESSEE !! GO VOLS!!!
Seems like Gary isn't answering, or anyone else. Try putting down a weed barrier on the bottom and sides of the raised bed. It's like a black fabric material. If you have a gopher problem you could also do this with Hardware cloth (metal grid they can't chew through). For Permaculture tips look for channels that talk about that, Oppenheimer Ranch Project is one channel. Just look for the gardening videos.
I recently built planter boxes on a brick patio. I put slats on the bottom to raise it followed by landscaping cloth followed by cardboard. I’m using a raised bed mix that has coir, chicken, manure, and some other stuff in it. It doesn’t seem to be retaining water very well. I’m having to water it twice a day. Hi. 🖐 I have two questions, 1. Could the first layer be a bag of potting mix since mine seems to have alot ot wood chips and sticks in it, and then manure? 2.)Also...I'd love to use what's available in my back yard (palm tree and another unknown tree) however...before I started gardening we did have a bug guy who would come out and spray the perimeter. So should I not use clippings from those?

Hello! Thank you for educating us. :) I would like to ask you about what to do if you already have your Raised Garden beds with soil from 2/3 years ago?We have been adding soil/garden soil/compost every year. But last year, we did not have nice crops at all. ONLY sugar snap peas, which were delicious by the way. I must have done something wrong/unnecessary since nothing grew well last year. What are your thoughts? I understand this video was "How to fill your Garden Beds from the very beginning". What to do when you already have garden beds with soil/garden soil or compost or whatever I put in there last year? What do you suggest is the next step now if I already have soil in my garden beds? HOW MUCH and WHAT do you suggest for me to add? I have 4 garden beds- 4 feet by 4 feet each. Thank you so much! :)
Hmmm. So if you have been adding in compost, it should be cool. But... turn some and look for worms. Worms are good. Next Peas fix their own nitrogen, I am guessing maybe it needs more nitrogen. Again guessing. If it has worms it is looking good. You can use blood meal to boost nitrogen. Also when you plant bigger plants toss in some organic fertilizer into the planting hole. I would also use fish emulsion every 2 weeks and see how it grows. The reason being.... if you dont get crops growing with this then something bigger is wrong. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you so much for your kind answer. I really appreciate it! 🙏 I'll be looking into our garden beds and look for worms. In the case there aren't worms, do you suggest we add soil, peat moss and blood meal? What would be the ratios if the beds are about in between half and 3/4 full? I also wonder.. Not having enough worms could have been "the" issue for nothing growing last year then? If so, could it be possible to have worms NOW if we didn't have last year? Thank you! 🙏
This is a concern of mine, too, I can see it happening with my beds in future. Do you think maybe you got something in there that had a pesticide or other chemical that poisoned the soil? Just a thought.

Hi Gary. I layered peat moss, leafgro, compost and mixed in vermiculite. Should I leave it layered or should I mix it all in? Is there such thing as too much peat moss in a raised bed?
I would mix it but if it is done. You could in theory end up with too much peat. But the 3 you have is a good mix. what did you do before you put the cardboard? I want to start a vegetable garden where there is grass. Do I need to shovel that out? First time gardener, thanks for your help

Hi, my new house has a ton of Italian cypress and so there's a bunch of pine needles. Could I use these pine needles at the bottom of a raised garden, like your hardwood chips? Should I worry about the acidity of the pine needles?

Hi Gary, my local municipality sells a "yard" or truckload of compost for about $10. Can I use the cardboard at the base, followed by wood chips and manure then fill with compost and peat moss? Or would that be bad for the garden? Thank you!
Municipalities are great resources. You can do that. So if the chips and manure are deep at the bottom you are fine. You really want 6 inches or so of the compost and peat on top so the wood chips arent stealing nitrogen. When I have raised beds that are 12 inches or higher I do this. If you beds are lower... put to down the wood chips and manure and soak it in with a water soluble fertilizer like fish emulsion. The nitrogen helps break it down Please visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden shop for your fabric pots, fall & spring seeds, seed starting supplies, peppermint oil, neem oil, TRG merchandise and more at www.therustedgarden.com Check out my new gardening PODCAST Gardening Coast2Coast at gardeningcoast2coast.net with CaliKim.
I am planning on starting a raised vegetable garden. Can I use pressure treated wood safely? Will it leak chemicals and if they do leak, are these chemicals harmful when I eat the vegetables? TIA
Yep. Its treated with copper. I have videos talking about it. The leaching is not significant in my opinion. Bottom line is if it were toxic enough to hurt you, it will kill the plants first. They are more harmed by copper than we are. You need enough earth and peat moss to fill the bed if that is what you are asking. Depends on what you are filling. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
I never did. But I think it would want to compost and the microbes would break it down and that process would take nitrogen from your plants. You can compost sawdust and use it in the garden once composted. Please Visit my (The Rusted Garden) Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Not really value to it for structure, nutrients or microbiology. You can use it mixed with other materials like compost or peat. but I would use it alone. Just a bed of mud. What about the recommendation of using vermiculite? I built my raised bed a couple years ago based on your video and thought the mix recommendation was different and was peat moss, manure, and vermiculite

Hi Pa. Fish Preacher. If you go to homedepot.com you can see the prices for the different board sizes. I used 2”x10” 8ft long untreated wood boards that were $10.48 each. You can purchase all your items online and just pick up when they’re ready! No need to go into the store, unless you need to have your wood cut for you!
I wouldn't say any soil, try using texas native clay on your garden even if you mix with that, I dont think there could be any good results. That's what I have, pure clay.

Gary, love your videos. But I strongly disagree with one thing. In southern states, don't mix "your regular soil" anywhere near the top 12". Diseases hostile to veggies thrive in local southern soils. I live on 20 acres in SC, and have struggled with home gardening for the 15 years I've lived here. Every plant virus known to man lives in these soils. What I have done is build 3 foot tall raised beds, fill half with logs and wood chips, mixed with my "local soil", which is red clay. I cover that with a healthy dose of nitrogen, to help the carbon in the wood break down. I actually use Milorganite. Then I top it off with a foot of "compost" that I get at a local reputable nursery. It's well broken down. I add some organic fertilizer to the top and rake it in. Things grow like a charm. Of course it sinks several inches every year as the base breaks down. When it gets 9" below the top of the bed, I'll lay another layer of woodchips about 3", more nitrogen (milorganite), and top with nursery compost. Also, I'll mulch with shredded paper from my office when I grow, prevents splash up water from causing disease issues, and maintains moisture. At the end of the season, I'll rake up the matted paper and throw it in my compost.
That I didnt know. We have few if any soil born diseases here. Thanks. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
If you put down cardboard or newspaper and woodchips, you'll have enough worms to start your own bait business by mid-summer. : ) Build it, and they will come. But I've heard of people doing that.
Thats not true unless you believe what is in a bag is better, just because it is more expensive. Much more goes into soil than weather or not it is pricey or cheap.
Thank you for breaking it down so clearly for us city folk who have never grown a thing!

Stay safe.

Potting soil is made for pots, container gardening. Now that I'm in an apartment that's what I use

Gary, Please help!!! i had something like this in my yard... crab grass took over.. it was a garden night mire!!!!! what can i do this time so i don't drown in
crab grass.. thanks mike from TENNESSEE !!
Several layers of cardboard is another option. Overtime they will break down
I recently built planter boxes on a brick patio. I put slats on the bottom to raise it followed by landscaping cloth followed by cardboard. I’m using a raised bed mix that has coir, chicken, manure, and some other stuff in it. It doesn’t seem to be retaining water very well. I’m having to water it twice a day. Any suggestions to improve water retention? Thanks!
Adding coco coir or peat moss can help a lot. Premoisten them before you add them.

A couple years removed, I think you are fine with bug spray. You can set it up that way.

Hello! Thank you for educating us. :)
I would like to ask you about what to do if you already have your Raised Garden beds with soil from 2/3 years ago?We have been adding soil/garden soil/compost every year.

Did you put cardboard on the bottom?? Or was it just wood chips? Thank you for you’re videos 🙏
In the first video of the series, I did have cardboard down. The playlist is linked too.

Nope you can just layer it over the grass. Many ways to set them up, but covering grass is a good one.

Thats okay
Hi, my new house has a ton of Italian cypress and so there's a bunch of pine needles. Could I use these pine needles at the bottom of a raised garden, like your hardwood chips? Should I worry about the acidity of the pine needles?
You can. I am not sure about the acidity but you can sprinkle some lime over them if you are worried.

Gary! what do you do if you find little insects in your soil? Little parasites that look like small grey ants. What can i do if they're in my soil?
So I dont know. But Nature tends to manage issues in the soil. Sometimes they arent harmful to the garden. I would need to know what they are.

How can I add manure if I halready have the soil in my bed? I wouldn't want them to compete.
You can let it compost separately and add it in later. Or you can put it on top of the soil and let is sit for several months.

The nitrogen helps break it down

They are more harmed by copper than we are.

do you put some kind of barrier between the ground and the bottom of the raised bed?
So for like moles... no. I dont get them but fine hole fencing is used. For weeds... sometime cardboard.

Quick question. I believe You said any soil can be used around your yard to put in the garden beds , so I am in GA were my soil is red clay . Can I use the red clay and mix with peat moss to start my garden bed? If so, what do I have to be mindful of when I use this soil combo? I know this video is old but I would love any help you can give me in 2021.
Yep clay is fine. I would definitely add some. Adding compost, peat and red clay would work out fine

Can you use saw dust instead of Peatmoss?
I never did. But I think it would want to compost and the microbes would break it down and that process would take nitrogen from your plants. You can compost sawdust and use it in the garden once composted.

I have lot of gophers
Why should we not use top soil?
Not really value to it for structure, nutrients or microbiology. You can use it mixed with other materials like compost or peat. but I would use it alone. Just a bed of mud.

What about the recommendation of using vermiculite? I built my raised bed a couple years ago based on your video and thought the mix recommendation was different and was peat moss, manure, and vermiculite

this is so freaking complicated and expensive ughh!

Thanks.

Have you tried to put worms from like the bait shop in your raised garden beds?
If you put down cardboard or newspaper and woodchips, you'll have enough worms to start your own bait business by mid-summer. : ) Build it, and they will come. But I've heard of people doing that.
Otherwise, you can also wait for a rainy day and go worm hunting after rain stops; go for a walk & you’ll find hundreds (for free!) 😉
The cheaper, low quality soil you use the worst your plants will do. Facts.
Thats not true unless you believe what is in a bag is better, just because it is more expensive. Much more goes into soil than weather or not it is pricey or cheap.
