We must keep the old ways alive no matter where or which culture. I love this music. I am Appalachian and see the old ways dying right and left. We will loose what it is that makes us unique. We will loose that identity that makes us US. I want to go to France and experience French Culture not someone else's.
300 years after it was written, and the musicians all look like they’re having a total blast! Bach and the Brandenburgs are truly timeless. Michala Petri is an absolute gem as always. Reinhold Friedrich is new to me, but he made that look effortless. Wonderful!
Totally agree. As a lapsed trumpeter aged 56 I am in awe, his performance is, dare I say, of Maurice Andre’s level - a bright and sweet tone with clean articulation. 👏❤️
I agree. I first heard this piece years ago in a college course on music appreciation. The version I heard was a bit slower than this one. But I like this one better.
My Gosh! -- there's not a single thing to criticize here! Every performer enjoying his/herself throughout. The restrained and elegant direction by Mr Abbado, letting the performers be the center of attention. The world's top recorder performer in person! The crisp trumpet, and lovely oboe. A glorious venue, with appreciative audience who attended in attire this concert deserved. And oh yes -- J S Bach. I'm usually of the "original instrument" crowd, but this lovely performance might just be the best I've seen or heard on modern instruments. Bravo!
Exactly my thoughts. While original instruments performances give us as close an experience to what the composer heard, modern instruments in the hands of artists of the calibre of those in this performance (soloists and orchestra) is a treat! Only a trumpet player would stick a flower in his mouthpiece then play the final note up an octave - cattivo, Herr Friedrich! 👏👏👏👏👏
I love how Bach can put together such varied instruments to bring a culmination of joy and elation that only comes from the heart and spirit. How graced we are to have such talented individuals who can portray Bach with such feeling and talent! Bravo!!!!! Bravo!!!!!!!
Some notes on these notes: 1. The trumpet is not 'blaring'. Bach wrote it to play in counterpoint with a violin, recorder and oboe, not to dominate them. While a modern instrument is used here, and modern instruments are generally louder, the balance is good because the trumpeter is exceptionally good. 2. Bach and his contemporaries frequently used the trumpet. It was commonly used outside the field of battle. It is remarkable in other ways: being pitched in F is rare; it is unusually virtuosic but not exceptionally so for Bach's writing for trumpet. 3. The final note played by the trumpeter is up a 4th from what is written, i.e. the tonic high F not the 5th which is C.
Good eye to catch the write up mistake about trumpets final note. Yes, I winced inside at the writer’s description of trumpet as “blaring”. In my opinion, the piccolo trumpet is a very clear, clean, precise, and pure sound - especially with a superb trumpeter like Frederich.
About the 3rd statement: I think the trumpeter intentionally played that at the end. Initially, he played the regular version. Correct me if I'm wrong! Thank you so much for the info! Greatly appreciate it!
Sir Paul McCartney, who as a young boy sang in the boys choir of a church in Liverpool, was very much inspired by Bach. The trumpet in one of his best compositions, Penny Lane, is a dedication to the legendary trumpet in this 2nd concerto.
On Penny Lane played by David Mason who played the 2e Brandenburger concerto many times, he got 68 English poud for it and was in 10 minits already outside the studio.
Brandenburg recordings on UA-cam oftem sound overstuffed without dimension, but these are alive. (I remember first loving these pieces when I was teenager. It was early Springtime and the treebuds like jewels in the bright sun.) Perhaps some recordings are from yesteryear and someoe tries to remix them digitally? And sometimes the forces are too large for this music. Neither works. This small chamber group is perfect. I'm on cloud 9... albeit temporarily, but that's life. Thanks to these musicians and recording engineers who love beauty and dedicate themselves to it.
Bach at the height of his genius, played by the best in the world. I keep coming back to this performance and being transported to . . . another plane of existence.
Bach, Bach, Baaaaaaaccchhhh!!! Tú eres el verdadero Dios de la música, tus obras son descomunales en belleza matemática y estética. I discovered Abbado 40 years ago on the radio, conducting opera. I knew he was something special. After a lifetime of listening to Bach's Brandenburgs, both live and in recordings, I haven't heard a better performance than this one.
Lovely embellishments by the musicians during the Andante, esp. the recorder at 7:45 and 7:55. Exquisite! I have heard this in dozens of interpretations, this one is by far the best, as are the entire 6 Concertos performed by this ensemble!
Majestic, celestial they delivered to us a lifetime of rehearsing, studying , a disciplined life at their instrument. Just a superb interpretation of Brandenburg 2 ! Bravissimo !
