    Hey Travis. We're in Virginia zone 7 here, we definitely plant cool season in the fall into winter here. Last year , it all did good til the artic blast nailed us in January but i did have a mustard green that was covered that actually made it til spring planting. We have our transplants started. This week its in the 80's, and we are doing soil prep and removing summer crops, I threw up some 55% shade cloth to try to help the soil out a bit during the transition, planning to plant brassicas under it before long .

    Up in central Maine (zone 4/5), in July and into August, I start seeds and direct seed throughout my garden stuff for my "fall" garden -- really can't call it a "winter" garden because we get hard frosts starting sometimes in November that wipes pretty much everything out, so ideally I have things planted to enjoy the "fall" garden in Sept-November. Up here a true winter garden requires some type of cover/hoop house, which I do want to explore one of these days. My biggest issue is not just sitting there and admiring the fall garden and to get to harvesting, because those first hard frosts can come and just wipe you out overnight, no matter how lovely the fall garden was looking the day before.

    Just started growing a fall garden a few years ago here in southeast Oklahoma. Haven’t been able to overwinter anything except some multiplying onions. Last couple years the temps got pretty low froze all I had planted. Everything does taste better in the fall tho. Fixing to put cabbage, greens, beets, carrots and a few tomato plants in the ground In the next couple weeks.

    I'm in 8a, near Memphis and I'm planning a second round of green beans, red cabbage, bok choi, collards, kale, chard, and diakon. In October I'll plant garlic and shallots.
    In my area I can overwinter pretty much all of my brassicas. Most of them even survived that arctic blast we had a few years ago. We got down to -10 for a week, and all my kale, collards, and chard survived with minimal damage.

    I always try to plant my English Peas in the 12 days of Christmas. Dec 25th to Jan. 5.and the a second planting in late Jan.( just in case the late frost hits when the peas are in flower). This gives the peas enough time to make before the 80's arrive.

    Jeff from East Tennessee. I do have short day onions up and growing. Cabbage is up and growing. Just seeded broccoli. Have to fight the heat with these plants. Putting some of these plants in shade up on tables to get them out of the hot sun.
    Moving right into fall. Clearing off old summer veggies that are done. Will get ride of weeds, then till up an area. Next I will put down a lot of mushroom compost in each row. Till it in good and plant my rows. Cabbage will be first and later will be broccoli. My onions will go in sometime in late October.
    As it gets cooler, I will add kale, collards,mustard greens,lettuce and last spinach!! This is my fall garden. Lots of cabbage and broccoli will take up the most of my garden. Maybe around 150 to 200 plants!! A short row of the other plants. Thanks!

    Got my cabbage, kale and collard seeds started. @lazydog you had asked on an earlier video if anyone had tried the Top Chop variety of collards. I have started a 9 cell tray of seeds for my raised bed. I’ll let you know how they perform for me. I also started the GA Southern that you recommend so I can see how they compare.
    Please include info on timing for starting our short day onion seed for transplants in the upcoming videos.

    Here in Arkansas I'm in zone 7b, right on the 8a line. Ive over wintered kale and carrots here before. Going to try to put in a little more effort to over winter more this year. Been hard growing my transplants out so far this year with the bug pressure. Even non organic pesticides aren't able to keep the bugs off my brassicas, eating them down as quick as they pop

    Thanks for all of the great videos Travis! Q: When you're starting your cool season crop seeds in trays in August, isn't the heat in the greenhouse too much? I'm in zone 9a too and have a greenhouse with rollup sides and my greenhouse is HOT in August. Do you do anything different? Start seeds indoors or anything?

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  5 місяців тому +1

      I start mine in the greenhouse usually with no issues. I have a shade cloth on mine as well as the roll-up sides. I do have to wait a little later to do lettuce, but most of the brassicas germinate just fine.

  • @doggiefamily908
