I can't even begin to imagine the amount of skill this takes to play. Good god. I wonder if people who watch this truly know how much skill this woman has
I am constantly in awe of Valentina's impeccable technique whenever I watch her videos. This has got to be the most brilliant rendition of Scarbo I've ever come across.
Valentina is very good, but Haochen Zhang played even better when he won the Van Cliburn Competition playing the entire Ravel piece AND the Prokofiev 2nd flawlessly.
if i may give another suggestion, i do also marvel the interpretation of Pascal Roge, Simon Francois, Ivo Pogorelich (despite his a bit too romantic interpretation)
I've just listened to Marcelle Meyer. Good reference. She was a friend of Ravel and premiered La Valse with the Gran Maestro himself at the second piano.
Valentinas interpretations are on an extremly high level. Gaspard de la nuit makes no exception. First movement Ondine is wonderful aerial and transparent. Wonderful pianissimo and you hear every detail. Never heard it in such way. Absolutely fabulous, opened another door for me. Gibet is very athmospheric. I liked it very much. Scarbo, this is piece is hell on earth. Valentina can easily handle it and her interpretion is again very good. However, I'm missing some agressiveness, intensity, bite. It's difficult to explain. Overall a very nice interpretation, nothing wrong. My reccomendation. However, I will always be addicted to Martha Argerich's interpretation from 1975 on Deutsche Grammophon. It's pure magic. Did you know she was peregnant during recording session? Maybe the small but vital difference, who knows...
+Rafael R. - +Rafael R. - You have some of the most intelligent comments here so I will respond to you with a little background in the hopes that you will have a greater appreciation of Valentina's interpretation of Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit. Gaspard is derived from the Persian word that means "treasurer" or "keeper of jewels". Gaspard de la Nuit (Treasurer of the Night) is about very dark fantasies from the poetry of French romantic poet Aloysius Bertrand. Ondine is not supposed to be aerial - it is about waking up to the seductive sound of the shimmering sea - and the song of a mermaid named Ondine who came from the sea to seduce a fisherman (and the listener) to the pleasures at the bottom of the sea - It is an invitation that is at once mesmerizing and ominous as interpreted by Lisitsa. When the fisherman declines, you can actually hear the mermaid's pain from being rejected and hear her crazy laughter in the end just before she fades back out into the sea. Le Gibet is not supposed to be atmospheric - rather it is about waking up in the night to hear the tolling of a bell - or what sounds like a distant bell (listen to that consistent quiet clang of the B flat through out the entire piece). When you look out however, you will discover that it is a dead body hanging from a gibet. One can actually interpret the tolling B flat as the sound of the corpse swaying in the wind. Scarbo is about waking up in the middle of the night to find the demon Scarbo standing over you. The narrative is not exactly about aggression - it is about this mischievous demon reappearing and disappearing in the darkness - flitting in and out of the light and casting a frightening shadow against the moon light - It is nightmarish but I would say it is more about fear than aggression for the demon never really attacks - he was just playing and full of mischief - again incredibly interpreted by Valentina. Given the above narrative, I would hope that you would listen and watch her performance again and hear it differently. She is not better or worse than Martha - she just has a different "voice" and point of view. Enjoy.
I have learned by heart Scarbo. It took me a year just to remember the notes, not master. It's sooooo fast I can't never reach the correct speed. Valentina somehow possesses ultra instinct: she made the piece so effortless while I struggle just to keep up with the speed. I really hate that part 3:07-3:42 (hardest part of the piece in my opinion). It is so dizzyingly fast I sweat over the piano 😓
Huh, it seems like 4:05 would be hardest because of the combination of enormous jumps and the fast right hand runs, but I haven't worked on this piece myself yet.
Making the humanly impossible possible is a human quality this Lady has in abundance. Inspirational to the highest degree. Who ever gives this video a thump down is blinded by ignorance and arrogant beyond believe.
Whom, in their right mind can "dislike" this??? Just to appreciate all of the work that went into this piece by the composer and the performer is amazing, let alone the perfection she renders it with.
Gaspard de la Nuit (1908) takes it's title from a book of poetry by Aloysius Bertrand (1807-42) published posthumously in 1842. The opening of the book describes its genesis, a fantasy in itself. Bertrand tells of encountering a mysterious indigent who calls himself Gaspard de la Nuit and who leaves behind the manuscript of the book. Upon inquiring after the man in order to return the manuscript, Bertrand is told that the man has returned to hell, for, indeed, he was the devil in disguise. Enjoy.
Cal Ford lang lang is a kid when it comes to playing the piano I agree. But his « immaturity » is definitely what makes his playing so entertaining and full of emotions. I think he’s one of today’s greatest pianist if not the best.
This piece is so beautiful and tonally complex. The climaxes and the piano portions show beautiful contrast of emotion. Truly one of my favorite pieces. Bravo, Ravel and Lisitsa!
Valentina, as ever, a revelation in her playing - not simply in the listening, but the watching of her amazing fluidity of movement. Very interesting to observe how she tackles the "tremolo" notes of the opening - not by finger change (such as I have always used), but by a very supple wrist and single finger movement. Wonderful pianist.
I'm going to be honest, was listening to this at 2 am and it freaked me out. Kept feeling as if there was a hauntingly beautiful voice calling my name through her playing. Brava you never cease to amaze me!
She is so good at bringing expression to the uber technical stuff. And her hands look extremely athletic. She is like an Olympic figure skater or a top ballerina: tough, lyrical and precise.
I agree with you completely. Valentina is an outrageously exciting and original artist. What is the point of great technique but nothing to say ? - too many players like that. Rubinstein criticized them. Valentina has EVERYTHING to say and the best imaginable technique to support that. I love Val's playing. I love all sorts of things, & I'm so glad I came across Valentina's playing to add into the must-haves !!

Magnificent playing that simply defies belief. I urge people to track her concert schedule on her Myspace (such as Japan, Jan 9) and if in your area go to her concerts. We all have, and have been lifted away from all life's little problems by Valentina's staggering playing ! :)
It's probably something you have to listen to several times. This is my first time listening to it too. Some of my favorite musicians write really bizarre/complex music that is difficult to understand at first but is rife with profound emotions that take you to a mindset you've never experienced before. You see, if it's something you can relate to immediately than your own preconceptions may block the intended imagery of the song. If you're disconnected, you have to sit there and listen closely.
This is absolutely amazing! I would not like to compare pianists, but I could say she is the true heritage to Martha Argerich. I have listened now to several different genres of her playing and each is just perfect in the way that she is a true musician and can play with the musical contents. My standard for Scarbo is Casadesus, a very old Mono LP out of a set of 3 covering Ravel's complete piano oevre. - I hope she will play in Vienna some time so I can visit a live concert. -

Brava, Valentina!! The most challenging piano solo to execute on earth played by the world's acknowledged master. Martha was trained with my grandmother-in-law back when they were kids and remain very close. My wife as well was Argentinian, a brilliant concert grand player during her life and passed this training down to our now 35-year old daughter, Amy Adrianne, who in turn passed it down to my 9 y/o grand-daughter, Pace Emily. There's another of MA's Scarbo here with the full score. :)
I've never seen a more insane or relaxed rendition of this song. In some ways it misses in delivering certain emotions other performances convey, but the frantic perfection is such that I think it speaks the closest to what Ravel was thinking of with such a maddening composition.
Does anyone know how many notes she had to memorize to play this piece? Forget her technical skills. Just the fact that she memorized every note, with their dynamics, is enough to put me in awe. I mean, it isn't exactly a melodic piece with words that you can sing to...
Sam Damon Concert pianists learn multiple concertos and sonatas that can last for longer than half an hour, some closer to an hour. This piece would be no feat of memory for them but it is certainly not one with a simple melodic structure.
I`m always in awe when someone shows such tight, complete skill. I always loved piano. I have to admit I don`t understand the music, nor can I say I particularly like it, but, I can really appreciate the skill and could definitely listen to this multiple times with joy, if my logic can be understood. Bravo!
It's one thing to be able to play such a complex and beautiful piece of music. It's another to do it without any music to follow. I am amazed by her precision. This is truly art. Absolutely amazing.
She is spellbinding. Gaspard is incredibly challenging both technically and interpretively. My favorite is still Minoru Nojima, saw him do it in person and it was the single greatest performance I've ever seen. The audience could not immediately clap at the end we were all so stunned. It seemed like forever before we burst into applause. Ron Russell Author of "Beethoven: Heaven's Voice"
There's a marvelous set of orchestrations available on UA-cam. I am a classical pianist, but I like to draw inspiration from other ways of making music. RARE Orchestral Version of Gaspard de la nuit : Scarbo
She perfectly captures the fiendish, devilish character of the music while maintain a clear virtuousity and technical brilliance. This is the interpretation that iI feel is most true to the artistic intent of the composer.
It's a true technical hell. not only have you managed to successfully challenge that. you also managed to give it a lot of character and feel. chapeau :-) -Eran Fuld

It's one thing to be able to play such a complex and beautiful piece of music. It's another to do it without any music to follow. I am amazed by her precision. This is truly art. Absolutely amazing.
She plays really well. I enjoy listening to her for hours.

It's a true technical hell. not only have you managed to successfully challenge that. you also managed to give it a lot of character and feel. chapeau :-)
