- Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon (August 4, 1900 - March 30, 2002) was Queen of the United Kingdom and the Dominions from 1936 to 1952 as the wife of King George VI. As George's wife, she was the last empress of India. After her husband died, she was known as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother to avoid confusion with her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II.
Born into a family of British nobility, she came to prominence in 1923 when she married the Duke of York, the second son of King George V and Queen Mary. The couple had two daughters: Elizabeth and Margaret. The Duchess undertook a variety of public engagements and became known for her consistently cheerful countenance.
Elizabeth spent much of her childhood at St Paul's Walden and at Glamis Castle, the Earl's ancestral home in Scotland. When she started school in London, she astonished her teachers by precociously beginning an essay with two Greek words from Xenophon's Anabasis. After returning to private education under a German Jewish governess, Käthe Kübler, she passed the Oxford Local Examination with distinction at age thirteen.
The outbreak of the First World War saw Glamis Castle turned into a reception centre and hospital for the wounded. Lady Elizabeth was too young to work as a nurse, but spent the war years helping with the running of the hospital and aiding the welfare and morale of the patients.
In 1936, Elizabeth's husband unexpectedly became king when his older brother, Edward VIII, abdicated in order to marry the American divorcée Wallis Simpson. Elizabeth then became Queen. During the Second World War, the King and Queen became symbols of the fight against fascism. After that, her husband's health deteriorated, and she was widowed at the age of 51. Her elder daughter, aged 25, became the new queen. Elizabeth was a consistently popular member of the family, even when other members were suffering from low levels of public approval. In her later years, Elizabeth became known for her longevity. She continued an active public life until just a few months before her death at the age of 101 years, 238 days, which was seven weeks after the death of her younger daughter, Princess Margaret. - Розваги

Back in world war 2 h!tler threatened or tried to bomb the kingdom but the queen mother was not phased. H!tler was shocked because she did not fear him, she also learned how to shoot by herself and stayed by her kid’s side during that time period saying "The kids won’t go without me." H!tler was now scared of the queen mother. Calling her the most dangerous woman in Europe.

The Queen Mother was an incredible woman. She used canes to walk at the age of 101! Most people use them at 75, but she only used them in her late 90s. However - I thought the Queen would live to 103 or even 105.
I also thought the Queen would pass her mothers age by a few years. Weird she didn’t.

My late elderly neighbour grew up on the Glamis Estate with the Queen Mum (both born in 1900). The children were told "Elizabeth must win". She was used to "winning". My neighbour married well and met Queen Mum several times as adults. Queen Mum blanked her. She WAS a snob, but she is the woman this country needed during WW2 and supporting the Monarchy and her frail husband. She WAS the iron fist, when we needed it. If the Royal Family had left Britain during WW2 for the safety of America, the Monarchy would have had no meaning to British public. Her decision to keep the family in Britain saved the Monarchy. George 6th would never have been strong enough. His wife was the power behind the Throne. Love or hate her methods and personality, she is the reason her daughter was able to become Queen. She lived long enough to support the Queen (along with Philip) to become the Queen we knew.

I had no idea that Queen Elizabeth II would die at 96 years old. I thought she would live past 100 years old like her mother. The Queen mother lived to 101 dying before her 102nd birthday. The Queen mother suffered from a chest cold since Christmas 2001.

Wonderful. Lovely photos. One of my grand mothers was born in 1899 so about the same time but died in about 1967 (much shorter life for her). We have one of her in about 1918 with 9 siblings and her mother and for my other grandmother who was a little older one from the 1890s.

Actually in previous centuries people tended to have shorter lives it was really only in the 20th century that living to 100 or beyond became more common

My great-grandfather was born in 1893. He had 2 older brothers. One died in 1952 at the age of 63 and the other died in 1971 at the age of 80. My great-grandfather died in 1990. His wife, my great-grandmother, was born four years later and died in 2000 before she was 103 years old.
