    Ha ha... I'm making the sound of the castanets with my heels ! I was thinking too much about the pride of the Spanish dancer. Intonation issues, rosin not sticking much, some notes missing... but many added for the spirit :)

    I studied Arcangelo Corelli in college in my Music History classes. I told my professor how much I enjoy the compositions by Corelli. His return answer was "a lot of people do!" The performers in this video are well studied in discipling their playing r to the best level they can attain. I think they have done a magnificent job! Thank for sharing Corelli's wonderful music with all of us.

    I didn't realize how lively baroque music could sound as I've only really "read" through it on my own! Do you pick and choose what ornaments you use for each individual performance or do you just stick with your favorites? I've heard there is some very slight improvisation with baroque music and was curious.

    • @andrewsappel
      @andrewsappel  3 роки тому +18

      HI. Thanks for your nice and appreciative note. Ill answer for the ensemble. We know that Corelli was a master elaborator and when his solo violin sonatas were published in Holland and in England they were published with the ornaments that Corelli added to simple and lyrical adagios and andantes. We aren't sure that these ornaments were really his but they are contemporary and give us an idea as to how elaborate Italian ornamentation was for violinists. I think that most good baroque players use these as a good guide post, playing them or inventing their own ornaments that seem in the ball park with them. We also have examples of other great violinists of the time printing their own ornaments to the Corelli sonatas. Each violinist brings his own character and art to the pieces. In this set of variations, Corelli does not add the elaborations he brings to the other sonatas. What you hear as ornaments are Olivier's spontaneous additions...always a delight to the continuo section from performance to performance.

    • @andrewsappel
      @andrewsappel  3 роки тому +4

      It is a theorbo--which is a lute with the added long bass strings that are simply tuned to the low notes you want and never stopped with the fingers as the lute part of the instrument is. However this reminds me of a funny story I heard from a fine viola da gambist. She had played a concert for music lovers who were not particularly savvy about original instruments and after the concert was over a member of the audience came up to her and asked if that was a piano she was playing. She told me that under such questioning, the best policy was to be agreeable and she said yes.

    La Folia est elle une oeuvre de Corelli ou bien de Vivaldi ? les Américains choisissent volontiers le premier, mais les Européens restent fidèles au prêtre roux
    qui semble t-il a imaginé le ballet qui accompagne normalement la partition de musique. Quel que soit l'auteur l'oeuvre est magnifique !

    • @andrewsappel
      @andrewsappel  2 місяці тому

      Folia is a bass line and harmonic progression that was set by countless composers. Corelli's, published in 1700 is a cornerstone of Baroque chamber and violin music. Vivaldi's came a few years later...but there are variations on Folia by Marais, d'Anglebert, Couperin, CPE Bach, Liszt, up to Bernstein's America from West Side Story which is a take on Folia. Cheers ANDREW
