If we were so lucky as to stroll through Versailles with Saint Simon, one of the great diarists of France, he would point out activities and events of many varieties. Suppers and collations, garden promenades, visits with friends in distant wings of the great palace. In each and every location, indoors and out, there would be music. Music for intimate dancing, music as background, tiny concerts to be relished. Music was a main ingredient to most moments at the palace.
But if we were truly fortunate, we would be among the invited few for music in the salon of Madame de Maintenon. There, sitting near the king we would hear François Couperin at the harpsichord along with France’s most exquisite instrumentalists playing concerts of several movements, Royal Concerts. By the time of these performances, at the dawn of the 18th century, the taste for grand gesture had passed. The great Lully was dead and opera was less central. In 1710, drums and trumpets may have reminded the King of his failed exploits and France’s limping economy. But music that quietly touched his spirit was the order of the day and balm for an old monarch. Couperin tells us that he himself much preferred music that did not surprise but that moved him. And so, these Royal Concerts are filled with moments of poetic delicacy, humor, and tenderness. Each movement is a sensitive drawing not suggesting dynamism but enshrining the moment with just the right phrase, perfumed harmony, and supple melody. If the music seems static, we ask why move anywhere when this place, these gardens, this breeze are so delicious?

Urania, the Muse of Astronomy. To me, this music depicts the majesty and power of a billion-billion stars, the birth and death of stars and planets, the fire of countless suns and the cold of the endless dark, yet for a short time of that creation, life has existed on this Earth, and we came along to experience hope. Around us in the universe, entropy and creation dance as countless particles fly and dance before coming together to form a cohesive whole, With the major end of the piece, to me this symbolizes as a reminder that in this vast expanse of ordered chaos, there will always be hope and creation so long as darkness remains.

I feel and hear that you have spent many years of hard work and sacrifice to have as good of a touch and sensibility as you do. @@TheStickCollector Not really. It was a link from an announcement of a concert the Ensemble is giving in the future and a chance to see if our work was worth hearing. And also a chance for our audience to hear a fine fine work.
@@andrewsappel well regardless I would say it worked. To me it just feels like people outside of the classical scene haven't heard of 80 or 90% of composers. I like pieces that are in minor key.

HI....yes indeed, a fun performance..however, that Folia is Vivaldi's variations and not Corelli's. SO it is good to have both on UA-cam. Thank you for listening.
Could someone please explain, why this version is in C# minor while the original Corelli scores are written in D minor? I have found several records on UA-cam in C# minor and several in D minor. At the same time all Vivaldi versions are in D minor. Most scores that I have found on the internet for Corelli's version are in D minor. Sometimes I can find G minor version but still very confused where C# version comes from. Of course you can tune half step down any string instrument though not sure about key instruments.
This is an honest mistake based on your gift of perfect pitch. Our edition, from the original, is in D minor but pitch in Rome was lower than modern pitch of A=440. We were probably playing at A=404. Pitch varied greatly in the past. Venice was very high...Paris and Berlin quite low...Bach worked with old organs tuned high (A=460) while when he used French woodwinds they were tuned very low (A=390). The best book on this is THE STORY OF A by Bruce Haynes. In the meanwhile, stick to your D minor Folia at whatever pitch. Best regards.
@@andrewsappel To be honest I just wanted to use standard Corelli's scores in d minor and learn by ear improvisation pieces from your version when I though my guitar was out of tune, then I realized it was ok but if I do half step down. It is how my confusion started, haha! Thank you so much for the explanation and the book reference! It is real eye opener for me. I have never though that the pitch could have changed over the years. In electric guitar world, some guitar players prefer half step down tuning. I have always though about it as using E flat instead of E but probably proper way to think about it is that they use different pitch. That might sound obvious for you but for me it is a new world and indeed now I have read they are turning "standard A=440 to approx. A=415. Thank you one more time for the answer! Your performance and improvisations are amazing!
