A little smarter than Christianity honestly. Aliens makes a lot more sense than an omnipotent ethereal ape that has the power to stop evil, won’t, and is somehow not evil for allowing evil to persist.
It's like a more wholesome and believable version of scientology (which interestingly enough is truly no more nuts than Catholicism or any other rigidly structured religion based in strict rituals, membership fees, and bizarre beliefs).
I think religion needs a bit more credit than that. The world is big, there's a lot of things to learn. There is always someone more experienced than you that you can learn from. Religion is a collection of beliefs and stories from people that forms your perspective and lays a foundation. Perspective makes the infinite world easier to process while the foundation serves to unify people under common ground. This unification is easily taken advantage of if the wrong people are at the helm. Not unlike governments, companies, all the way down to personal relationships.
Pretty much true since if the majority of the are/nations/regions imterests are the same so its easier for people to do the tasks told to and exc. Its also easier to make major decisions yo yhe favor of the people since th majority has the same interest or atleast some of it.

If the belief system gave the leader special permission, its also likely a cult. But if it lasts thousands of years after the founders death, it's a religion, if it doesn't call for special permissions for the leader, it's a religion
