I am glad that you enjoy these video as much as I do. There are some very cool, interesting engines out there! If there is some kind of help you would like to provide me, I would be very grateful for any donation via Patreon, so that I can keep making these videos for you. I do have a miniature working engine coming waiting to be built, so stay tuned for that! Thank you!

This engine was done as an exercise, it was never intended as a seriuos competitor, the engine could never produce the power required to be serious ,the basics included a long flame trave that reduces the max rpm. We new that. It was a political move.

    • @joepkortekaas8813
      @joepkortekaas8813 4 роки тому +5

@@almelling6699 I agree with your first statement, the exercise part, but reduced the rpm?The thing ran at 21,600 rpm! At 30.6 mm stroke, the average piston speed was 22 m/s, so they could hardly have gone higher with the rpm. You obviously know little about engine design! I suggest you read my book "Honda's Four-Stroke Race History 1954 ~ 1981", where the NR 500 is extensively discussed.

You must have missed me at Honda in the 70/80 and at the other 2 Japanese comoanies. Yes i eas a consultant to all except Kawasaki.
Oh and engine designer i have designed 3 F1 engines and one of those eas mine and i sold it to a manufacturer which manafpged 4 world championships. Oh and i have desighned engines for Chrusler. BMW and acted zs engine design consultant for Porsche, Farrari . And Lamborgini. And i am now working on a new F1 engine for a Japanese company. If you look this engine and the conrod centres and the piston mean acceration, then apply that to flame speed at that rpm you will see the piston leave the burn just like our v10 3.5ltr engines in F1.
By the way i have 55years in engine design not tuning not modification etc DESIGN.i am now 76years and still called upon for design, i will not answer you so just leave it and take a word dont be confrontational, its not good in Japan ,i am there now.

Some 4 cylinder engines are very boring. I once rented a 2001 Corolla and that thing was about as gutless as they get when it comes to any acceleration after starting up a hill. They are a blast when starting from a light but absolute snails otherwise. I am not sure if the newer ones are any better because I never drove any of those. Sure they get good mileage (or so they want you to think). My Uncle's 2005 Passat TDi not only got better mileage but was better looking and more fun to drive. It was also a lot more comfortable inside. In the Corolla there was no usable rest for my right arm and that all by itself made the car feel uncomfortable then the seats were nothing to be desired by any stretch of the imagination.

The "18000 rpm range" doesn't quite sound like the best way to describe the honda. It's more an 18000rpm peak power, but from memory the power band on them was something disturbingly narrow due to how they were tuned to be extremely peaky. 500-1000rpm power band from memory, but that might've been on their even crazier flat 6 race bikes

1:30 the oval pistons had nothing to do with getting more air in, it was the trick to make a V8 engine which was still considered to be a V4 by the FIM. The NR750 had 77 PS at 11,500 rpm for the home market, the export model had 130 PS at 14,000 rpm, and the racing model had 155 PS at 15,250 rpm.

  • @gc33

I still have the documentary of motocyz C1. The NR750 is iconic for a number of reasons... The oval pistons came about from Honda developing a v8 for Gp bikes but then told they could only have 4...hence the oval piston twin conrods and 8 valves. But from that point o.. And it took quite a few years... But look at everything on that bike... Mirrors came out in later year s on blackbird, pgm fuel injection became the norm, inverted (usd) forks, under seat exhaust, the use of carbon fibre(John Britten was already using it in his now famous V1000), the use of side mounted radiators later found on vfs... So quite a revolutionary machine despite being nick named Never Ready and being quite lardy(heavy) for a 750...

Many people think two cranks add huge weight but in reality an engine with two cranks has two smaller cranks so the added weight is minimal. Removing the need for harmonic balancers saves weight.
On the other hand, two stroke X four has a simple one throw crank carrying all four con rods. It needs blowers like the opposed piston engine.

The thought and engineering skill, that goes into building any high performance engine is impressive. Sometimes though, there are engines that are just on another level entirely. Although we've relied on the basic four stroke principal now for well over 100 years, and the average car engine is still basically the same as it was at the turn of the last century, albeit far more refined, reliable, using better quality materials and computer technology, thankfully there are still plenty of engineers out there thinking outside the box, constantly coming up with new engine designs that are little more interesting and unusual.

Two strokes are efficient in one way but have issues with pollution. If that problem could be solved it would be great.*
    * Some company had purportedly solved this issue long ago, but their engine never made it to market. Their engines had some other advantages too: They were lightweight due to the power-on-every-stroke technique allowing a 4 cylinder to act as an 8 cylinder, effectively and also because of their slightly simpler design compared to a 4 stroke engine.

Every time I hear a Detroit Diesel in one of your videos, I have to do a search to find more. Then I go on to EMD'S and Deltics and Commers. Then three hours of my day are used up!

If I'm not mistaken, the Toyota Mega Cruiser used a 4.1L 4cyl diesel engine.

The list is not completed, because there should have been a Russian ZAZ Zaporozhets engine. This car also has got a rare air cooled(!!!) V4 engine that used to be a tank starter engine as well. The brand was cancelled at the middle of 90's

Very interesting. But the 2 stroke diesel is probably more common in commercial applications than the 4 stroke by far. Take locomotive; They're all 2 stroke diesels these days.

The Honda RC148 and RC149 (125 cc 5 cyl.) had 8 speeds, and ran at 18,000, resp. 18,500 rpm, the RC166 (250 cc six) had a seven speed box and ran at 18,000 rpm, so your statement is not completely correct!

Nissan had a turbo/supercharged engine in a care back in the 1989 in the K10 Micra which predates the vw.

Oh, FINALLY the Ford V4 at 6:24 in the video.
I knew a guy with a bastard creation that had a Ford V4 in it that was taken from an air craft mover. (The V4 was an industrial engine).
People freaked when they saw that under the hood!
