I think the reason why people at the time sometimes said they didn't like Galaxy 2 as much as the first game is mainly how it has much less focus on story than Galaxy 1 and is much more linear, adopting many 2D Mario things like the world map and more linear levels and stuff (this was around the time where it seemed pretty common to claim that "linear in 3D Mario = bad" for some reason). Galaxy 1 was also pretty linear but much less, you still had some more open levels, most levels had a bunch of stars just like in 64 and Sunshine, you had an actual hub world, and thus more choice on what levels you played to beat the game. But there have also been others who think Galaxy 2 is better than Galaxy 1, and in the past few years that's become a much more common opinion. The general consensus I've seen a lot of people have is that Galaxy 2 has superior level design, while Galaxy 1 has superior atmosphere and story. But regardless, both are like the two most highly regarded Mario games ever, and neither one was ever widely hated. Personally, both are my favorite video games, and I've never been able to decide which I like better.
