This is one of the reasons I love the hiker community, the exchange of information on gear, what worked and what didn't. I believe I'm dialed in on everything except shoes😢. I've watch alot of vids and yet to see a pair that just stand out. I've even toyed with the idea of just buying a cheap pair of shoes at a dollar store or Wally world once a month along the trail for my thru hike. I have 8 months to decide lol. Thanks again for taking us on your adventure, I knew you wood finish.

I took your advice and invested in an underquilt protector and gave you credit for the idea in my last video. Seems to be a great addition to my gear. Nobo on 23 Feb!!!

Very Good and interesting about your shoes. I tested my sleep system before my SHT trip and found that my 20 F top quilt and full length summer under quilt combined would work down to 30 F. That's what I used for my trip and it was pushing the limit for a few nights in the upper 20's. I did this because I knew that the temps would be mixed either cold or warm over the two weeks and the summer UQ would save on weight. Overall my sleep system did work out good. Although if I was to do it again I would have purchased a 30 F top and under quilt for this trip.

I got a bug net at the Pines market, Eustis /Stratton on Flagstaff Lake. That’s up the road from Sugarloaf and the Bigelo preserve. Boy was I glad😊 very simple , cheap and effective piece of gear. Not annoying too much either

Im in the middle of my thru-hike and for rain gear i use the Marmot Precip. I also had the pants but ended up just sending them home. I sweat a lot so eventually i just wore a pair of north face shorts and the rainjacket with nothing underneath. If i were to wear any clothes underneath the would have just gotten soaked... Ya learn stuff...

I definitely think you got the clothing that worked best for you. I would add that if you have poor circulation, mittens would be better than gloves and to avoid sleeping with socks. Warmth is created through friction, so many mountaineers know that mittens would work better in extreme cold conditions. In addition, the sleeping bag and quilt act as a barrier when you sleep. If you sleep with too many layers, because that is "human nature" to layer, you run the risk of hypothermia, as you begin to sweat during the night. There are also clothing technology that help with odor control. Lululemon has Silverescent and Patagonia has Polygene. I totally agree with the importance of dialing in all your clothing gear way before your thru-hike, because I see too many thru-hikers duplicate effort and over pack. Some SOBOs started with a pack weight of 40-50 lbs! It is true that you can send clothing home, BUT be aware that temperatures can be 20 degrees lower on a mountain. For this reason, even if you are trekking in February, don't send home your puffy!!! Hikers have experienced very cold temps even in June. Nice vid Frozen and love the sound of "fiancee" to call Krissy! 👍🏻 Happy trails! 🌺

That's the amazing thing a our the hoody. It goes down to 35F comfortably with just a short sleeve hiking shirt underneath. Never needed the puffy after I sent it home. If it got windy the rain jacket overtop of the hoody picked up the rest of the slack.

    • @thriftyendurance
      @thriftyendurance 5 років тому +2

@@FrozensAdventures Birch was eyeing your hoodie! It looked really warm and if that does the job of the puffy, then the puffy is a redundant piece of clothing gear that served no purpose! 👍🏻🌺

I agree that a melazana hoody is warm and comfortable, however a cold breeze or wind cuts right through it ! 😵 So if you have a good wind shell to put over it it’s great. Plus it’s great to hike in, although it does weigh more than a puffy. There are also other micro grid/ waffle grid fleece options that are very similar to melanzana that are easily available online. I still struggle on whether or not to take one or the other... or even both when I hike in high altitude environments, having Both on a trip does seem like an unnecessary redundancy sometimes.

Mountain Laurel Designs Event rain mitts are bomber. Mine have never wet out. Only caveat to them is they have to be seam sealed. For "dishwasher" type gloves, Showa 281 gloves are amazing. They're designed for the fishing industry. They are very breathable. Good stuff.

Cool video again. I'll look into the possum down gloves. In the winter I always take Burton snowboarding gloves that I love but are bulky and hard to work with. I don't use dirty girls anymore because the velcro comes off of the shoe. I have an Arcteryx fortress that works very well but is heavy. I found a fleece at Old Navy of all places that is awesome, got it on sale for less than 9 dollars normally at 34 dollars. I've had a few rain jackets and found that no matter which one, your going to get wet. The rain will just follow your face into your body. I've worn Russel base layers in -9 degrees in the rockies, 10 dollars each although I love my smartwool down base layer but 100 dollars is a bit much. Jon King whom has the "San Jacinto trail report" whom I've met on the trail and at the outfitter is a boot guy. So am I. Keene Targhee is my go to boot. I also use the Solomon XA pro 3d. Not an Altra fan although I did try the Timps for a short time.

I just want to comment on the gloves. Just for the fun of it, wear those same rain gloves when it's a day of no rain but maybe cloudy and higher humidity. But wear them the same amount of time. I'm willing to bet they are soaked by the time you're through. It's more than likely trapped sweat rather than wetting through. Especially when you're hiking and sweating, even in cooler weather. I have got to wear rubber gloves where I work and my hands are soaking wet and gloves drip water out of them in just a short while from the sweat. I find it's better for me to just go with a good wool or possumDown glove and not worry about getting wet hands because more than likely they're going to get wet anyway and it's extra weight you won't have to carry. Great gear review Frozen. Looking forward to your next journey. I really enjoyed your videos very much. Maybe some short hikes and gear taken and why in the near future?

This was a helpful video, especially regarding the rain gear. I am looking to upgrade my rain gear for my AT flip flop next year (the only jacket that I have is a pound a half!) and was considering going with the Helium II, but it looks like the Marmot Precip may be a better option for me. I am just struggling with my some of my clothing setup as I will be hiking through warmer temperatures at the beginning and don't have a lot of experience in cold temps - plus, I may be committing a sin on the AT as I am looking to hike in pants...

I've researched different types on line but am hesitant to spend super big bucks for something I might not like.... which comes to another question: How do you do on those windy days- do you get "sea" sick from blowing around? You can try to join a Colorado hiking group on FB and ask if someone can get it for you.

Outdoor Adventures I was wondering who hooked you up. It’s too much like a status symbol now.
Anyway, I enjoyed your thru from Kenya (i am a Jersey boy) and congrats to you for your accomplishment!
I appreciated your kind words about NJ.
I am not much of a commenter, and I’ll admit in the beginning I thought yours would turn into a trail magic tour - which it did - but you put out some good material in spite of it!
Best wishes in your marriage to that girl. She seems like a good pick.
And finally, NYR will always be the cooler team.

My first one I got when they were selling them online. A subscriber lives in Leadville and was able to snag me 2 on my journey.
