Zpacks is innovative and leads the market in many respects. It's products are also the worst stitched in the cottage industry - by a long shot. This has been going on since their doors opened and nothing has changed despite a few brave people willing to call them out.
Thanks for the info there is always a decent spot 💪🏻
I'm starting my AT in 03.2023. Greetings from Germany ✌🏻
Enjoy!
Really good information on the hammock set up! I always wondered about the breeze below, so the under quilt helps with the drafty areas! You completely lost me with all the hammock lingo, but I am a fast learner and took lots of notes. I was open minded to the hammock idea, but being a hard core trekker who have spent a lot of time on the mountains, I just did not see how such a gear could work, BUT watching you on the AT showed me there were clearly other viable options to camping. I guess the PCT and the CDT will be a game changer, especially starting out in the desert sections...BUT I have a "feeling" someone would come up with a brilliant idea for a self contained hammock where there are no trees! Necessity is the Mother of Invention. Personally, learning of the various gear out there...and I am not a BIG gear review person since gear is so personal and suitable for the individual...it is important to keep an open mind! Thanks for the information! Any hammocks for two...for you and Krissy? 🤔 Happy adventuring! 🌺
I’ve used an army poncho with snap clips draped over the ridge line and clipped up on the bottom as an underquilt protector. It made a world of difference on a windy night.
Two big Congratulations for you, first on completing your AT hike and secondly, getting engaged! I've been following your videos for several years and I've learned quit a bit from your videos and have incorporated many of your suggestions into my hammocking experiences. One thing you didn't mention was the use of snake skins. Although I know they've covered them in your previous tutalorials. I didn't start using them until last year and was amazed how much help they are in setting up and breaking down a camp site. As a now believer in snake skins, I thought that might be worth an amendment or at least a comment in your next gear review.
So I truly went on my first expedition( mountain lake at 7600 elev). All diy except the hammock which was a dutch. Tarp diy from RSBTR, Costco diy top/underquilt (see joyful rambler👍)
I have been watching your and shug videos alot. Still go back and forth on both of you guys. In my opinion you two or the go to guys for how it should be done. Thanks for your time.
I got some of the Evo Loops after I saw this and I love them. I’ve replaced my titanium hardware with them. They’re cheaper and lighter than titanium.
yep, I never leave home without my UQP, awesome that you did the entire AT by Hammock!
Just finished my first hammock hike at Grayson Highlands State Park. It got cold but we had sleeping bags. I find I’m not comfortable in a hammock for sleeping. I sleep on my side and had problems falling asleep last night.
We had a great time last night and today hiking to MT Rogers. I have to say you are a beast!!! We hiked over 12 miles most were the AT and my feet are hurting from them rocks. Need better shoes. But all the up and down climbing up and over and thru. Wore me out!!! Knowing you did all 2180 miles like this and much worse! My hat goes off to you and all that hike all the AT! I have a lot to learn but still love hiking and my Ankle held up, so maybe next spring/ summer my son and I might start in Georgia and go to NC
2192
LOL I bet you felt each and everyone of those miles too. Great going, Frozen!
You can't sleep in a hammock with a sleeping bag. It is not made for that unless you use a sleeping pad. The bag compresses and you lose all insulation effect. You need the top and underquilt to be successful.
Thank you for the post again congratulations to you too
And you cannot be more right the tarps are just not wide enough they have the length but they are never wide enough
And I am 5, 9 and 1/2 my main go to tarp is from show gorilla storm with the doors and even that may be 13 ft long it has the length but I like it's also very light but it just does not have the width it needs to be wider much wider I would say 2 ft per side
But if you could find a 13 x 13 with doors or have one completely made with the cuben fiber tarp company that would work even better in your favor
Or you can take the tarp that you have now take it to some cottage vendor that will work the magic as in adding extensions to the width
Thank you for the tips. Have a one tigris hammock & tarp I am waiting to try out soon when we go on our next camping trip. I am hoping to use it on the AZT if possible. 😊
Another great offering brother!
Can’t wait for that Curve review!
Be well
Craig
Great video. Just upgraded some gear myself .Dutch chameleon from a Yukon Vista. Dutch Xenon 12 ft tarp from an ENO profly xl. Very happy with the new setup. Canr wait to see your new tarp. Am looking for one with doors next. Also a pillow. The stuff sack with shirts just isnt cutting it. Keep up the great work!
I love the packs from LiteAF plus they are local to me being in NJ
Hey Frozen, great review, as always. And I apologize if you get this question all the time, but I've always been a tent hiker my whole life but you kinda put a better spin on hammock camping than anyone else I've seen. I can relate to the way you put it and now it makes sense to me. Sooooo, my question is, ballpark figure how much did it cost for your through hike hammock setup? The whole thing including both season quilts? We are the same height and about the same weight as each other so this would be a perfect match up. Thank you so much for your time and effort you put forth for each video. I watched you from start to finish, so I'm looking forward to your next adventure.
Both sets of quilts? Geez. Umm. $1100? I've aquired this gear over years of backpacking though.
Thanks for taking the time to post. Very useful information.
I will have to look at the other vendors HG has been the only DCF tarp I've seen. I would prefer one slightly bigger for superior coverage. Great look at the big 3. Thanks for sharing.
can you do a video showing how you packed your hammock and what the process for setting up camp was?
Great video Frozen. Very informative. If my memory serves me right, I seem to remember someone offering another someone his TQZQ underquilt protector. Thinking now that might have come in handy. Mmmmmmmm 🤷♂️ Just picking at ya. Didn’t stop you from getting out of Georgia.😂
Hey Frozen, not sure if it which video it was but you talked about a different manufacturer for the tarp and possibly doing a review on it. I am about to buy the wider tarp with doors through HG and was wondering if you were going to have info on this other tarp anytime soon. Thanks!
Shoot me an email frozensoutdooradventures@gmail.com
Thanks for all the reviews and videos on the hammocks. Just ordered my Sparrow based on all your feedback on Dream Hammock. I'm not sure people caught that you also have a beginner hammock series that is awesome.
Make sure to use the discount code
@@FrozensAdventures I did and certainly appreciate the savings. Now I have a few extra bucks towards the rest of the setup.
Thanks Frozen i was worried about using a hammock next year i was saving up for a tent.. ill use it for shoes now :)
Thanks so much for the coupon code, I’ve wanted a Darien for so long and that code cut the cost enough for me to have one
Glad I could help. They are awesome hammocks and DH are good people.
@@FrozensAdventures Any chance you'll get another coupon code to give out from DH?
Just purchased a Darien in time to use the discount code. Thank you for that, and all that you do for the community.
You are welcome glad you got that discount!
Very informative and great video. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Great information! 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video frozen. I'm looking for a dyneema tarp as well but since I heard you're eyeballing some other brands would you mind sharing which ones you have in mind?
Thanks Frozen for sharing!!! I've shared it in the official "Dream Hammock Dreamers"Facebook group. I really would like to have you as a member!
I'm curious your thoughts on trail angels and trail magic, now that you have completed the AT are you having any thoughts that you want to repay the trail by becoming a trail angel or maybe donating to someone like Fresh Ground and the Leap Frog Cafe.
You provide good gear reports. Thanks!
Awesome video and helps me a lot. I'm looking at the Hammock Gear Dyneema Fiber Palace Tarp and getting it in camouflage. Doing the camouflage for the privacy. Is there other companies using dyneema for hammock tarps? I have the Kammock roo single for the less weight but still looking for a comfortable hammock that's light but can hold a big guy. Any suggestions?
I was interested in that Dyneema tarp, but it doesn't come in black. Seems like no one does Dyneema tarps in anything but light see through colors. The camo helps a little, but I hate the repeating pattern. They should randomize it.
It's hard because it only comes in 2 colors. Anything else is bonded by a very complicated process. Camo might also be a stock color
I just found some sot shackles at a marine store. I am going to use them in a set up like yours. good vid.. :)
Be sure to make an evo-loop for a more secure connection
Feels like a hammock is just a lot of work that isn't necessary. Using a tent on the PCT, what would you use if you were to do the AT again Frozen?
Having used both shelters now, I'd still use a hammock on the AT, there were just so many great campsites that weren't tentable. Once you get used to setting up, it only takes a few more seconds over a tent.
And I cannot forget that I have two other tarps my winter tarp or so-called group tarp is from DD hammocks which you have seen and that is 16.9 ft long by 16.9 ft wide
Then I have my secondary tarp that I use for my hammocking again from chill gorilla but it is the chill gorilla straight cut HEX
Hmmm...there is that ring again!
Great explanation of your setup!
Thank you sooooo much for this video. I am a hammock camp addict doing 8 weeks on the AT in 2020. ;)
Hope you still monitor this channel. Planning a thru hike 2023 and was planning to use a hammock. My question is I've seen campers pitch tents at hostels (basically in a field so they can access showers/bathrooms/laundry). Did you do this and if so, how did you manage using your hammock?
Yup I'm very much active. I did not do this but some hostels allow camping on the property. It will be hit or miss if a hammock will work. But there's always the option to get a bunk.
What are the other vendors you were talking about for your tarp? And possibly a video on them down the road. Thank you can you keep up good work.
Not sure but Dutchware Gear and Zpacks both have Dyneema hammock tarps.
In the works, can't talk about it just yet as I'm working with a vendor on the design. Soon enough it will be on he channel though.
What was your hammock setup total weight ? Thank you for your through hike videos .
Everything is listed in my lighterpack link in the description to the AT videos.
Thanks so cool how you did that
Why didn't you use your rain kilt as a under quilt protector?
Not wide or long enough. Now way to attach it.
I’m debating between an under quilt and a pad for my thru hike, I have a pad and have tested it and it does okay but my feet frequently come off and get cold. I like the idea of having it to sleep in shelters if needed but feel like an under quilt would keep warmth better. Any thoughts from experience?
Going to an underquilt is night and day. You can always carry a pad with you for sections of the smokies and the whites if needed.
Did you change out fabrics on your Darien before your hike? I thought you originally had it in a 1.0 I have a Darien in 1.6 and 1.3 - I've been interested in getting a chameleon but have been waiting because I feel that I'm too close to the weight rating for 1.0 being in the 190's right now. Now they brought out the dream 71 material, do you think you might test that out at any point?
Nope it's the same fabric. I had a bugnet on the first on made of .67 that ripped and I went with .8 I'd like to test that see through fabric that ripstopbytheroll sells. Probably wait till.my darien wears though which doesn't seem like it's going to be any time soon though.
I should've watched this again before ordering my Dutchware Beetle Buckles. I got 15ft straps and it feels way too long. You think 12ft is long enough?
12 is perfect imo
@@FrozensAdventures Thanks, good to know! I guess if they seem to be annoyingly too long I can always cut them shorter.
Hey Frozen was the 11ft tarp with doors enough for weather conditions on the AT or do you wish you had a 12ft? Fyi i am in a 11ft hammock
I wish the tarp was wider not longer.
That is definitely a sweet hammock setup! Seems like alot to remember too. What is the entire weight of your hammock system for 3 seasons? I'm a tent guy myself, i like the extra room a tent gives me and also because im a stomach sleeper. If i were to purchase a hammock what are your thoughts and or suggestions for stomach sleepers in a hammock? Is it even possible? Thanks for sharing Frozen always good stuff!!
All weights are in my lighterpack link in the description.
I'm a stomach sleeper at home. Besides the great big (9" thick) air mattresses, I've never found one to be comfortable in a tent. I switched to hammock camping several years ago and haven't been in a tent since. I now side sleep in the hammock. If I could talk my wife into allowing me to hang one across our bed I'd stay in it every night.
Looks like the current tarp is 102 inches wide, yours is thinner than that?
About 6 inches shorter yes.
So with your strap and. CInch buckles setup did they remain attached to your hammock all of the time or did you remove them every night?
The buckles stayed on. But if the straps were wet the were removed and I tossed them in the mesh pocket.
Hey Frozen - I followed you last year and am venturing into hammocking vs the renting I have done for years. Can I ask .... why did you choose the Darian over the Raven or Sparrow?
It's lighter and no bells and whistles. I don't need to take the meet off or put top covers on.
Outdoor Adventures thank you for your reply. One more question. In regards to the underquilt. Where do you find the wind protection piece that you said you wish you would have had on those cold nights
I am curious what this thing weighs in at ? Rough ball park.. thanks.
Check out the lighter pack link in the video description.
Great job with this video and I also sent someone over to your channel. He is planning a 2020 AT hike and you know a lot more than me. If you ever come up to my area let me know a few weeks ahead. We started new jobs and it is a little harder to take off for trips especially on short notice.
Frozen I know that this video is pretty old but I have a question. I have been backpacking with a hammock for some years. However I am planning a AT through hike and wanted to ask about your HG 20 degree underquilt. Did you opt for the incubator or the phoenix for your 20 degree quilt. My current experience suggests that below about 30 degrees it may be nice to have the extra length. Weight is always a concern. What say you?
Need to know when you are starting but I'd always go for the full length
@@FrozensAdventures Doing a flip flop starting in Damascus va nobo around April 1st. 2023
2024
Probably going to be sweating on a 20 degree. May want a 30 or just vent it really well.
Stupid question, do you just permanently tie your prusik knot loops directly to your tarp D rings?
You could say that yea. I can take them off very easily though.
Was the decision to go with the 10 foot Darian rather than the 11 foot made out of comfort rather than weight ? I’m 5’5” and I am trying to decide between the two. Any suggestions or recommendations for one over the other?
You and I are the same height. You can go either way. Either a 10 foot length with a width of 60 or more or an 11 footer and any width you want really. In my case I went with the shorter option because I wanted extra coverage for my 11 foot tarp, the weight savings were just a bonus.
@@FrozensAdventures thank you so much.
Do you think you could get away with the 30 liter Lite AF pack or is that too small?
I couldn't with thru hiker food. Probably on my normal trips yes or if I didn't carry 2 quilts.
Did you use a top cover for your hammock for when it was cold?
No I think top covers create unnecessary condensation inside. In my experience it's best and warmer to get that condensation out as fast as possible.
What is the width of your tarp? Curious how it compares to mine, as I have also thought a little extra width to it would be nice.
First for Frozen today! Haha
Frozen, I’ve never even thought about a hammock. What is the weight difference between a hammock, under quilt, top quilt, cover, tree ties, and an under quilt sock/protector vs. a zpacks duplex and a sleeping pad?
The weight of everything I carried is in my lighterpack link in the description. Hammocks are heavier than tents on average.
I use a pad instead of an under quilt? I haven't had bad enough wind to know whether a protector would help or work. Thoughts? Thanks, Bayly
A pad typically blocks the wind. But most find underuilts more comfortable.
Just got my dream hammock today. Guess I am a little late on the discount code
Probably. If I'd say if you ordered a few days ago you could email them.
@@FrozensAdventures ordered in May. Its all good. They earned my money. Still trying to figure out how to deal with the calf ridge. I might just be too big
Try raiseing the foot end of the hammock and pull yourself to the end of the hammock head end. That should work.
Lol, I just ordered a hammock. Of course there’s a promo code. Haha. I got my mom to buy one that was ready to ship, and she loves it. I’m still waiting for my custom. Thank you for your demos and reviews on them.
Great job Frozen..I have the amok xl..i love it but im a side sleeper..but it is heavier..
Do you carry anything that maybe on the heavier side but just love the item? Will there be a day when you take comfort over weight?
Can't wait till the next one..
My set up is complete comfort for me. So I can say I'm already taking comfort over weight.
Question on the Dutchware strap. Did you ever need the full 12 feet? I have them and am considering cutting off a few feet.
There have been some big trees that have gotten close to the 12' but there was never a time that I felt like I need 15'. Hope that helped.
I bought an 11' hammock. Do I need a 12' tarp?
No but I would recommend it for coverage unless you have doors on it.
Which tarp are you leaning towards?
Not sure quite yet. Well I know but can't talk about it quite yet.
I think the width of the current Hammock Gear Dyneema tarp is 8’6”. Is that also the width of your current tarp? What width(s) are you looking at now?
Either mine was cut wrong or they used to make it shorter mine is about is about 6" shorter than what they are making now.
Would you still recommend the Enlightened Equipment under quilt after using on your AT through hike? Is it the revolt 30degree down?
Yes I'd recommend EE and Hammock gear. I've been using both brands for years.
Congrats on getting married!
What would you recommend so someone trying to get into hammock camping
I'd recommend watching my beginner hammock camping videos.
What is the lightest hammock from Dream Hammock ?
The Darien
2.1oz for the regular pillow, 2.5oz for the large from the company’s website.
Yup they are actually a little lighter than stated, and I also do not bring the stuff sack for the pillow.
You have a wedding ring on...
what is the weight penalty for an UQ protector?
They weigh next 2 nothing. got one from simply light designs.
About 6 to 10 ounces or heavier depending on what material.
Mine is just under 6oz. Good for a 12' hammock
Question: When you were talking about the width of the Hammock Gear Dyneema tarp, you said there are other options on the market. I was looking at the Fiber Palace Tarp from Hammock Gear. It is approximately 10 feet wide. Is that what you would recommend? Or another company/tarp? Thanks for all your videos. Your expertise is greatly appreciated. ✌️
Yes anything wider would be good.
👍
Ah! I see the ring again! Are you guys already married? 💞
Did you ever contact Zpacks about your issue with the pack? Just wondering if they would still offer to fix it for free even though you used it a lot prior to the AT.
Nah I didn't. That packs got so many miles on it. I'll just get a new hipbelt when I use it again.
Yours and Shug's are the best videos on UA-cam for noob hikers and vets alike. Especially for hammock newcomers and again, vets. I have a Warbonnet Blackbird and Superfly tarp so am very interested in your thoughts and suggestions. Thanks much for the great vids! GUyz, here is another great hammock review of the camelion.

Hi Frozen. Thanks for the great reviews. I really appreciate them!
Tarp/UQP question:
I have the LSoH Ultralite 12’ hammock (16oz), the Warbonnet Mambajamba silpoly 11’ tarp (13.5oz incl. minor mods and guylines), and the 2QZQ UQP (5.4oz). Do you think this will suffice for the windy conditions that you had in the beginning of your AT thru hike?
I also have a 3/4 length 20 deg UQ (30 deg comfort), which I know I need to change to 10 deg full length for colder windy conditions.
My UQP: dutchwaregear.com/product/underquilt-portector/
My tarp: www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/product/mamajamba/
