Hi .. Thanks for the video . It shows the disassembly and reassembly process . But as a Mechanic , i would like to point out a few flaws in your process that you didnt do because you are not a mechanic . Dont be offended . Its only to inform viewers what was missed . After disassembly , you need to wash and clean all components . all rollers and housings . and gears . make them clean with solvent . When putting it back together you need to lubricate the housing and gears with grease before reassembly . Then you wont get the hesitation he is talking about . You also need to lubricate the o rings with a silicone compatable grease before install. NOT DRY ! Reg grease will rot the orings . You can tighten the assembly to what feels right , but when you install starter put a little blue locktite on the threads and TOURQUE to specs !
I just came back to say I followed your example and replaced the starter clutch on my 2011 Dyna Super Glide FXDC. Finished the starter work indoors yesterday and installed it today and she cranked up 3 x’s in a row without hesitation. Thanks again
Rarely do compensators go bad on harleys. You have cast iron claws that go between straight hollowed areas between the engine sprocket and the flat side of the dog claws rest up against spring washers. What really happens in all the cases ive dealt with is that when harley assembles these bolts for the sprocket they only put 60 lbs torque on them. The solution is simple. Use a click type torque wrench and tighten the bolt to 150 LBS. People assume the compensator is bad only because they never try to wiggle the two row chain sprocket back and forth and know there is some clearance, but they hastily take these apart based on the belief of some person that said your compensator is bad. As long as that assembly iskept tightit is basically impossible to ever wear one out because it is spalsed in oil constantly and is away from the heat area of the engine
Firstly, thank you very much. You saved me time and money.the closest HD dealership is 2 hours from here. The time to drive there, sit and wait for it while they repair etc.... you are very good at making these types of videos. Thanks again. Greg
Thank you man, I have same problem on my FLHTC 2009, I already changed my battery, and now I will fix the clutch starter... I already live the same way with my boat, now I will did it on my Harley ! Thank !
Great videos. Looks like I’ll be changing mine next. I just swapped out the compensator and chain tensioner. Third time I’ve done it in various bikes but this time it didn’t totally solve the issue so this will be my next move. Bike looks good and I’ve seen it cruising the island. Thanks for posting.
I have a 2008 electra glide 96 CID that does the same thing. bought it used paid cash got it home and , well it does what you showed I bought a good working used starter and will replace the bendex on both. The plus side is You do not have to pull the primary side cover to remove the starter bolts on these. Thank you very much for making this video
Heres a way to rule out a compensator fast On straight level ground without engine running, put the bike in gear, then rock the bike forward and backward You shouldnt be able to rock your harley back or forward any further than maybe 6 inches Plus always remove your 4 bolt inspection plate and make sure your chain only has no ore than 1 inch slack in the middle As for the starter or starter gear, the scratch noise is usually because the starter inner priary gear doesnt always extend ut far enough, but only engaes at the outer clutch hug gear teeth and that is mostly due to the end of the starter where your brushes are being dirty and cleaning that area out My 97 fatby has been scratchin randomly and ill bet its because the plate n the bac of the starter has allowed moisture to get inside and simply needs for me to clean it out and reseal it and bolt it back on
Own an 02 Fatboy, and want to do some preventive starter maintenance on it this winter. Was going to replace the copper contact points, plunger, brushes, and clutch in one shot. Any recommendations on anything else I should do while I’m in the area. Bike only has about 30k, but I’ve had the intermittent starter noises from day one (I’m original owner) usually when hot, but not to the point it came back, just once in a while. Fig it was just time to check and replace parts in there. I’ve read your comments on other posts, and u seem to know your stuff. Any guidance would surely be appreciated. Thanks in advance 👍
@@bxnyizzy I have replaced the compensator with a Baker and still have the issue just not as much. I plan on replacing the starter with p/n 31619-06a and new positive and negative wires.
Hola !!
My 09 StreetGlide does the same thing. I’ve changed the battery, changed the compensator to the replacement screaming eagle kit, changed the primary chain tensioner. And it happened again this morning. I guess this is what’s next. But going through this process, I’m changing the primary chain tensioner back to the Harley stock design, the Haydon is way to noisy and not strong enough on the spring. Major chain rattle on throttle rev, never did that on the stock one.
I find that the Hauden chain tensiioner are excellent replacement for the Oem part. Yoirs may have needed another spring plate to assit the spring adjustment.
My 2011 FLHX starter died I replaced it and it worked great but I developed an oil leak all the videos never mention grease or teflon after watching I added White Lithium Grease the leak is gone thank you.
Very good video my friend. What is it with Harley and their starting systems?? I have a '98 EVO FX, and I've replaced the starter twice, the 3rd time had it done, big mistake. I think they put a 10 tooth pinion back on but maybe for a 84T ring gear? It was sledge hammer to sledge hammer sounding. I ordered a 10T for the stock 102T ring and hammer sound was resolved but the damage was already done. So here I am again into this starter replacement process because my starters (starter clutch, solenoid, etc?. I will not buy stock H-D starters again) seem to only last for a year. Do you think a new starter clutch is advisable for a new after market starter? (2k instead of the 1.4). Your video makes me think that way. Now checking out new ring gears, the 84-10 ratio seems to be the best? But I'm also considering an enclosed belt primary. My Gilroy Indian has that set up and its nice not messing with extra fluids. Let me know friend.......
After so many bikes and so many harley starter issues (lots of bikes-hopeless bike lover) I am just as confused as you are. The only advice I can offer is to talk to a starter rewind/rebuild place that works on any starter. They have always given me unbiased advice. I personally don't have ANY faith in so-called Harley Techs trained by the dealership, just my experience. I have yet to have a single good transaction after many years of hoping. I am sure good ones exist but likely they move on to work independently. Either way, there are many guys who live and breathe starter motors in every city, they are they experts.
If your starter cured the problem , it is only temporary. Youll get the same problem coming back. Definately the compensator. It allows tension on the chain to fall off so starter disengages but jumps back in because the starter button is still depressed. And no you dont have fast enough reflexes to work around this problem. Good luck
Update on the starter noise?? Im in the same boat with my 09 flhtc and am looking at doing the compensator but now I am second guessing maybe I should just try the starter clutch..
Still good and still in love with the bike. Despite the fact that we should not have to fix these stupid parts so early and often considering how long they have been making bikes. Yes it is still working fine.
starter removal on 09 to 13 touring models are easy to do. I believe 08 and down you need to remove the outer primary cover to access the starter bolts
@@Dawseyandsons Thats awesome bro....im replacing my whole starter but like you i was told compensator....mine sounds exactly like yours did....so im feeling good now its just my starter clutch too. I have put about 500 miles on the bike since and cautiously optimistic that it solved the problem. Of course my pessimistic side is half waiting for the sound to come back, but, so far so good.
In the video the gear you took out didn't look messed up or anything, did you notice wear on it? Wondering why you went that route if you didn't check the ring gear first.

Problem with the 09 OEM is it is self adjusting and will sometimes over tighten and cannot loosen causing premature mainshaft bearing and seal wear.

which grease and teflon paste do you recommend? Great video. Cant wait to try this. my 09 is making the same grinding sound...
Whitlam Thread Sealing Compound is the Teflon Paste I use. The grease was just a bearing grease I had in the shop that has PTFE in it.
What's a compensator
