Sarastro's aria is one of the finest numbers ever written for a bass, and Hines's rendition is superb.

Very, very solid bass. Dark, resonant, with grandeur and elegance

A singer must be able to sing in the original language and understand what he sings. This is ridiculous !

Believe me, he could sing this in perfect German. He is simply in an English language production. I sang the role of Valentin in Faust with him. He was not only a wonderful, kind man, but a consummate artist, and one of the greatest Bassos of all time. . Nothing ridiculous about it.

Bro, that wasn't always the way people saw it. For the longest time operas were translated. Josef Greindl for example, a German bass, sang most arias in German. It's just the way things were, nothing ridiculous to be found

Based on the image, which looks like a good cinescope, this was presented on early television. The producers probably thought an English translation would be better for the audience.

Oh my. This guy, Jerome Hines is one of the greatest if not the greatest American operatic bass in history. Superbly technical and sings effortlessly in all languages. It's like insulting Michael Jordan because you don't follow basketball or are not educated about him because he no longer plays. Learn your history

@@NovellNUSoulSeriesMy history is fortunately not American but European ! The bass voice I prefer is Boris Christoff, a Bulgarian and consequently European.
