This program was 3 years before OMTI & a great potential idea of which I was a part of for its first 2 years. We were all grateful for the experience although there were some circumstances later where it’s legitimate operation was compromised by funding problems. Henry Lewis, Frank Corsaro, Franco Corelli, Dodi Protero & William Vendice all left sometime after I moved to Germany & the whole operation eventually fell apart much to Jerry Hines disappointment. When I last met with him in Amsterdam in 1993. (I think he was singing a role in LE WALLY) we had a long talk about OMTI’s problems & what it came down to was the funding received in OMTI’s first year should ideally have been spread out over a longer period of time. But the New Jersey State Legislature wanted all this appropriated money to be spent the first & second years, which certainly helped us, the first group of singers chosen, but which was not forthcoming after around 1990 when the program really needed it. Political issues again compromised a longer more visionary artistic program. That’s America! And now there is even a lesser chance of programs such as OMTI even getting off the ground at all.
One last comment is that I was glad to hear ON THE ROAD TO MANDELAY. I will program this again sometime in the future but most likely in the states, although some Brits may remember & enjoy it as much as I do. I love many of these “Old Chestnuts” & also WITHOUT A SONG. Although I always thought of GRANADA as being only for tenors, I might now reconsider this for future use in an appropriate venue.

Grazie caro; ch'era un uomo di 1.96mts de alteza, con una voce grave ma ellegante. In il suo libro "Grandi voci", parlaba che Franco Corelli (di una alteza d' 1.85mts), portaba "elevator shoes", per fare una alteza vicina al maestro Hines;ma con il calzato teatrale,sempre Jerome Hines ch'era vicino a gli 2 mts.
Lo ho conociuto quando Io ch'era 24 anni,doppo di stare in la audienza di una recita al Metropolitan Opera Hoyse di NY;il maestra ch'era piu agradable e simplice.Una voce enorme,piena ma soave e calda.Bravissimo!!!

This weekend I met one of the ladies who was his personal pianist on occasion and became a friend of his. She is incredibly talented and when I heard his voice the only thing I could say was, "WOW!" Amazing, talented in multiple forms and from what she told me, incredibly kind to boot.
