    Dusty toured South Africa in 1964 and was the first international artist to challenge the apartheid regime. She had it written into her contract that she would only sing to mixed audiences and stood by that. The South African authorities deported her as a result. It was a huge deal in the news. As she walked across the tarmac to the waiting plane, the black airport ground staff formed a guard of honour and doffed their caps to her. She was fierce!

    I was born in 1964 and I love watching young people react to the music I grew up listening to☮💜

    I've learned so much from watching these reactions. I'm biracial and my mom was black and my whole life I thought my momma listened to no Caucasian artists! She actually listened to a LOT! This artist is yet another one who I thought was black and there are several others! I'm questioning my whole childhood at this point! Lol

    This is one of the great British female singers from the 60's. She had such a beautiful unique voice & covered many genres (blue-eyed soul, pop ,ballads, country, jazz). She had a lot of hits such as "I Only Want To Be With You", "I'll Try Anything", "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", "Wishin' & Hopin' ", "The Look Of Love", "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" & many more.

    This is one of the reasons Elvis came to thar studio in Memphis to record with the same musicians. Check out Elvis’ Memphis sessions including
    “Baby, You’re Wearin’ that Loved on Look” and “Long. Black Limousine” and “Promised Land”.

    This tickles me. "All we talk about is cars, coochie, hoochiemama, getting drunk, jumping off a bridge, and buying some expensive ass car that depreciates". There were songs about all that back in the day, even back before my time LOL "Little GTO", "Fun Fun Fun", "Go All the Way", "One Bourbon One Scotch One Beer", "Ode to Billie Joe", "Harper Valley PTA", "Beep Beep", "Hey Little Cobra".... Yup, they sang about all that before too. LOL Your reactions are a hoot though, and I appreciate you putting them up :)

    I recommend from the 60s and a movie with racial barriers bit broken.. * Song by "LULU - To Sir with Love"... movie was of the same name about 1967 with Sidney Poitier a barrier breaker for Black actors. Videos of Just LULU and video of clips from movie. Just this song for some reason had me remember LULU's both a year apart.

    In San Diego, we have a legendary sports broadcaster, Ted Leitner (Padres/Chargers/Aztecs and local news). Years ago, his car was stolen. He wasn't upset about the car. He was mad that "they got my Dusty CD's." He had dozens of Dusty Springfield CD's (told ya it was years ago) in his CD holder in the trunk.

    There are 2 more videos of her singing this. I think one is in the 60s. One is in the 70s and Ed Sullivan show. And then this one they're all fairly close. I grew up not having anything but radio. Oh, we did have some stations of TV, but we were in a home so didn't know we didn't know what color anything or was... I do know that apparently Dusty Springfield. Who is english was kicked out of South Africa because she would not play to segregate it audiences and I think she has such an awesome voice. Just like.
    The righteous brothers.Nobody knew what color people were and I can tell you.I didn't care as long as the music was awesome

    Joss stone does a helluva rendition of this. You should check it out. I'm a 67 year old grandma. Your mom and grandma were just trying to tell McDonalds they need to start selling onion rings. My whole family prefers those over fries 😂😂

    The White Queen of Soul, Dusty Springfield. Elton John said she was the best white singer ever, i agree, she could sing anything. Once you go and know Dusty, you can't go back.
    Listen to You Don't Have to Say You Love Me, Breakfast in Bed, Just a Little Lovin, Losing You, and her duet with Jimi Hendrix of Mockingbird.
    Her voice is amazing. She didn't record anything bad.

    I'm partial to Aretha's version, which sounds like a gospel song

    • @gayle5967
      @gayle5967 10 місяців тому

      Àretha loved Dusty's version, complimented her on it when she saw Dusty after hearing the record. Yeah, Aretha recorded it in a more gospel style, after initially turning down the song. Aretha's is very different from Dusty's. Dusty's is sexy, sultry, and soulful, not gospel.
