Putting a mirror up as a piece of art in a gallery is actually genius. You know people will take pics in the mirror, essentially making them (the viewer) the work of art. 😮

the credits at the end show each Candyman and simply the mistreatment of each person. One in particular that reminded me of a true story which was the little kid that was falsely accused of murder and was sentenced to death and executed by electric chair. The fact that their is a picture of him in that chair crying right before his sentence was carried out ....

Candyman is a myth. A rumor. A story. And stories change in the telling. They become different. The fairy tales of old are *vastly* different than what most children are told today. So it is with Candyman. Myths and stories fill a need. And they change to fill those needs as the needs of community shift.
That's why I like this take on Candyman.

All myths contain a nugget of truth, in Candymans case it's more than a nugget though. The real story is very interesting.

The moment they opened with telling the Candyman myth in a way that contradicted what we'd seen in the first film told me that they really understood the story at its core: it's oral tradition, which is what kept Candyman alive to begin with, and it also is extremely susceptible to error and narrative drift. It's like the myth of the man with the hook hand (so much so that they gave their monster the same hook hand) that's been around for decades.

I was jarred by Burke’s motive the first time I watched too and the third act felt weird. But Burke was obsessed with Candyman and believed the community lost something because the candyman mythos had disappeared and felt that the legend gave the community a purpose and identity, and also resonated with black injustice that is at the heart of all the candymen. He wanted to make sure that Candyman was truly brought back into the consciousness of the community and made sure it happened by forcing Antony to become the next Candyman because they would believe it of him. Quite a clever direction when you think of it, but needed a bit more direct building up before the last 20 mins.

I actually really enjoyed this, as I did the previous movies. I think the issue with Burke, is that he wasn't developed enough. As Anne-Marie said, he was (I believe) the one who broke the pact to never say Candyman's name. I think, or at least this is my interpretation, that he had been trying to bring back Candyman for a long time, hence all of the 'sort of' Candyman (men?) since the time of the first movie. He saw Candyman as the bogeyman who could help the people of Cabrini take back their neighborhood. He was a nightmare thing, but he also helped to protect the neighborhood from outsiders. So he seeded stories about him, trying to get people to start talking about the real Candyman. When he finally latched onto Anthony, and realized who he was, the one that the Candyman had chosen to be his, he did everything he could to turn him into what he thought the Candyman was trying to turn him into, another (possibly?) living version of himself. But the issue is that they didn't seed enough of this throughout the movie, so it ends up feeling really disjointed and rushed at the end. But in the end, he did succeed, I think, because it's not Anthony Brianna sees at the last, it's Robitaille.

You do realize that saying Candyman five times won't do anything, right? It's something made up for a movie...heck, the actors obviously did it. Life's scary enough without inventing more things to be worried about.
I'm so annoyed at the Hollywood machine. Nia DaCosta made this incredibly artistic picture, and as a "reward," got handed a Marvel franchise film that tanked, which will probably hurt her career. They really need to stop trying to turn every director that shows promise into a superhero film director. I'd rather see more films like this.

I hope Mrs Movies calls this movie out for the faux-deep artsy bullshit that it is lol. The 1992 film is not only far superior as a horror film, it does a much better job communicating a bunch of characters to the audience while also showcasing a core theme of “betrayal.”

Someone in the decision making room got confused about what candyman is and got carried away with the "white people bad" angle and tried turning him into the avenger for the oppressed and ultimately missed the boat.. They literally changed it from "I must shed innocent blood to keep my legend alive" to "when innocent blood is shed i will avenge them" ... the movie was so close to great, that makes it more frustrating.. what was wrong with Tony Todd being THE candyman.. why add all this extra shit, there's a reason the best part of the movie is when we FINALLY hear his voice.. I wish someone would go back and edit him into the reflection scenes, take out all the jabroni candymen, add his voice clips, cause aside from it being the lame candyman, those kills are dope AF... then make Burke the little boy from 1, Jake and have him "working" for candyman to lure Anthony further down the rabbit hole.. and change that ending somehow, maybe She calls candyman as burke is killing Anthony and he kills burke and the girlfriend, one of the cops ( i guess make it a black cop since they obviously dont want to have any white cops be good guys) and he sees Anthony kill the girl and then turn into tony todd and "tell everyone"

Just my opinion here but Jordan Peele trying to turn Candyman into some kind of thought piece on racism or society just made the movie so convoluted and disjointed. Sometimes a horror movie should be just a horror movie. And I'm sorry but every kill happening off screen made Candyman's presence unnecessary.

@@mercedesdrake9113except it was very well done and humanized every single character in the film. The original has a core theme of betrayal throughout. This hyper focused on race in a way that doesn’t feel true to the Candyman legend at all.
It’s similar to Black Christmas 1974 being a feminist horror movie and then there’s the 2019 movie that is third wave feminism poorly written bullcrap with bad intentions from the director intentionally trying to turn the general concept of masculinity into something that lacks meaning and virtue.
The MellVerse reaction on UA-cam of the original after seeing the remake first speaks volumes.
