These kids are 80 years old now. Everybody has regrets in life of some sort. I wonder what theirs were. Wouldn't it be something if they could see this video today?
@@sammymillerman High school graduates are generally 17-18, so the class of 1958 would have been born in 1958-18=1940 to 1958-17=1941. 2020-1940=80 so I would say that's right on the money. I think it would definitely be interesting to have a reunion of all 10 students, find out what they did with their lives, and show them the video and get their reactions. But the truth is, most likely at least 3 would no longer be alive, and there is some chance that one of them died young.
Pumpkin Guts The smart kids are becoming plumbers, mechanics and electricians. They’re making good salaries at age 22, while the college grad who majored in gender studies is 200K in debt.
Teachers are not unpaid. They make 35K first year with a Bachelors and can work their way up to middle income. My Math Money teacher was making somewhere around $83,000 per year. But he had a doctorate and back then a teacher with a bachelors started at $25,000 per year.
Right? Instead of getting so angry trying to control others beliefs.... People nowa days don't like someone just because they have one different opinion
Gabriel Codina no because wage rates have not risen to match the rate of inflation so even taking inflation into consideration, it is still wayyy more expensive now
Wage rates have risen with inflation in jobs with marketable skills. The unskilled labor market has stagnated due to the flood of illegal immigration and people who have no drive to get a marketable skill. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard, “Do you know anyone who is hiring that doesn’t drug test?”
What fascinates me? Hearing 1950s people talk with "normal" voices (not actors) as opposed to the mid-atlantic accent used in many movies during the time by actors.
I totally agree!!! Often times we hear that weird Hollywood style voice that was acquired in the time of these videos, but in here it sounds roughly like modern day speaking.
Oh jeez. The look on that one girl's face when they started to tell her that getting married and having kids is basically what she's meant for. That poor girl just wanted to explore the world and herself. I wonder where she ended up.
Yes this is very true, there was a study shown that high school students now have the same anxiety levels as a mental patient in the 1950s. So yes, you are correct. Also, they did not have technology like we have now where we feel safer talking to ppl over the internet, there’s barely any human connection anymore. Everyone’s on their phone, not enjoying life.
I love how they were taken seriously. Nowadays everyone is looking to find a mistake in you and laugh at you, if they did this everyone would be laughing at everyone. Even if it's done jokingly it still has an impact on a person.
Strange that I came across this video and your comment. I'm 45 and was recently recalling memories of adults laughing when I answered their questions seriously and thoughtfully. It was embarrassing and kept me from speaking my mind. Now I understand it caught them off guard and their reaction was involuntary. So now, as a grown man, I don't ever belittle someone for having less experience in life or assuming their youth is a detriment. Everyone should be heard and respected until they become disrespectful of others.
I don't think this one video with the intention of obtaining the thoughts of teenagers will give us insight into how adults back then treated teenagers with an opinion. After all, the 1950's and 60's had rampant sexism and you don't really see that in this video. You can find videos of people today having these kinds of discussions together. There's a whole youtube series doing that
My father was a high school senior when this was filmed. He was born in 1940. These individuals are all members of the 'silent generation'. My father's attitude was basically to keep your head down and work, and just be happy you have a job. He really didn't have the idealism the baby boomers had. I feel this generation was more about post-war realities.
Imagine if back in 1958 somebody told them that over 60 years from then, kids their age would be using technology to watch this through the internet. These where real people with dreams and are now either gone or old. One day we’ll be just like that and maybe kids in 2078 will watch videos of people like us and wonder what we where like. I find that super crazy...
No, in just 10 years they will of forgotten almost everything that they didnt continue to use. Our brain is not good at remembering things for long times that we dont use. It's something that kids dont understand
2019 students "college should be free." Colleges take advantage of student loans and charge what ever they want because government will pay it if students don't. Need to hold colleges more accountable and it will be cheaper. No reason a family or person should be still paying loans 20 yrs. Later.
Do we not still do that now? I don't know what beliefs you have or what you are trying to insinuate here, but we still have civil discussions in my humanities classes despite being in an engineering school, so I can only assume what the discussion is like in liberal arts colleges.
I need a “Where are they now?” segment about them (Or I guess since they’d be in their 70s now, a “What they accomplished in life” segment would be better)
Eh, I’d say it’s similar enough, you got young people who never actually earned anything in life bitching that they’re not being given free college. You try to figure out whether I’m talking about today or the 1958 shown in this video.
John Jadkowski People who have money will go and people who don’t will not go. It’s simple as that. Nowadays though, you have some financial “help” and that’s a difference from then and now.
4:35 he answered his own question, college is a ripoff they can't afford it . Community College should be free like high school but university or private would still cost same. At least Give kids a choice.
This is a weak argument because truthfully, Community College is VERY affordable for those that need the help. BOG Fee Waivers and Financial Aid end up putting students at every Community College I've been to in the positive... we all have actually gained more money than it costs each semester. This was the case at Antelope Valley College, Santa Monica College, and Compton College. All of us. I don't know a single student that complained about losing money because even the ones that came out of pocket (like me) got the money from the school. Furthermore, it's not uncommon at all for people to finish their undergraduate programs at real Universities with 0 debt because there are so many programs for people from low-income areas or if they're a first generation college student. AND if you couple this with doing your first 2 years at Community College, then you really have to put forth an effort to rack up some debt. At this point the whole "college is too expensive" thing is almost a cliche, tired argument that's been addressed for those that actually need to/want to attend. If we're talking undergraduate degrees then it's a good hypothetical but falls apart when put against reality.
Community college is pretty cheap though. Like a thousand a semester if you're full time. The only problem with community college is that a lot of them don't offer 4 year degrees, they just cap off at 2 years. That's why people just opt to go to university.
@Rex Rampage I think that the increase in availability of loans and grants to students has affected the cost of education because the schools know that students will have said loans/grants. It's not the only or even main factor, but I do think it has contributed.
"People here just get married after highschool and stick around" "Why is college just so expensive these days? "If someone takes a bunch of liberal arts it's not gonna help them be an engineer" "What are you gonna do playing baseball if you break a leg?" man some of these issues haven't changed much
Except college is actually very expensive these days. The uni I'm going to is 70,000 per year without any financial aid (38k for me and that's after aid and opting out of college dorming). That's ridiculous. Most people don't even make that much per year before taxes and the cost of essentials.
Gay Gayman Depends on the college you're going to. I could have went to a less prestigious school and paid like 10k per year, but my parents wanted me to go to an Ivy League so I can live their dream of going to college...
The well spoken students here have an IQ of 120 or higher according to that teacher in this film. That puts them in the top 10% when it comes to intelligence. So no this is not how typical teenagers spoke in 1958.
Mugen they’re only in their 60’s. So if they’re dead it’s not cuz they’re too old and I don’t think people usually in 60’s are in diapers lmao. That’s gotta be like 80-90
persian girl the life span of a is citizen is 76 yrs old as of right now and all of these people are close to that age. Trust when they say some are dead of age that is true. For the sake of argument let’s say they are 18 at the moment of the video. This is in 1958. So at the youngest they are 78 and more likely in their early 80s. I’m sure some are alive but let’s not act like late 70s you are on borrowed time. The US mortality rate has gone down recently after all...
It's called a Mid Atlantic accent. It was taught rather than evolved (like a southern or new york accent would have). Used mainly for public speaking and broadcasting.
General knowledge is also important, it gives you awareness about the world. It is very important to learn also things you will never practically use in your life. It makes you powerful.
Says the moron that only remembered this obscure fact over the skills taught such as doing taxes and paying for a car. People need to stop blaming their arrogant memory on a "poor" education and actually learn.
I am a member of this very group. I would have graduated from high school in 1958, except for the fact that I quit school after grade 10 so I can work on the farm. This went well for a few years, but I had an intense interest in electronics that eventually led me away from the farm. I first did a home study course in radio and TV repair, then worked for a while in that trade as an apprentice and picking up more skill in that field. Wanted to do higher level work, so I went back (part time) to pick up a few high school courses to allow me to enter into an electronics technology course. Got real lucky and was hired by Honeywell in 1965 to work as a mainframe computer technician installing and maintaining their equipment. That led to a 25 year career in the mainframe computer field. I moved on from the technician role to programming and software development in my new role in customer support. The mainframe business died off in the 1990s and when I was laid off from that, worked for a dozen years as an independent computer consultant until I retired. My education continued all these years with a mix of self learning, on-the-job training, and taking night classes. This worked for me but probably is not a good plan for today's generation. Me at age 18: flic.kr/p/d3e3v Later: flic.kr/p/7zr2et
Start early. Get a part time job and get some experience in the work world. At the same time, start to look at future career options and what it takes to get there. You can do it right here. Just type in "machine learning" on the search bar above, and you will see a range of selections giving additional information in that field. If that is not your thing try "brain surgery" or "cardiac care" or whatever it is in life that interests you. Then prepare yourself by getting the education needed to succeed in your chosen field. Have a 'Plan B' in case your first choice does not work out. As we go down the road of life we sometimes change directions voluntarily or because of outside factors. Be ready and adaptive to change. And finally, good luck. Sometimes you just get lucky.

olddognewtrick: I think you were wise beyond your years in this video. I graduated hs at 16 and went to college for over a decade- went 65,000 into debt changing from "liberal art" to "social science" and in the end, i dropped completely out because it turns out I want to farm...now im 30, in debt, and working farm jobs until I can afford a place of my own to farm. I should have started earlier but at least I eventually found what I enjoy.
The great thing about having only 1/3 of kids going to college is that college remains valuable in the eyes of employers. Nowadays the value of college has been heavily reduced while the cost of it increases.
It might be because of how they're all dressed and were raised to speak. Youth fashion wasn't a thing until around the 50s/60s and really didn't entrench until the 60s Remember before the 50s children were just the stage before adult - adults dominated culture not the youth like tlday

Really interesting. I am very curious to learn what became of the young lady who advocated for a liberal arts education. She was an excellent debater, speaker, critical thinker. They all were!!
Her arguments were arrogant and terribly flawed -- the assumption that learning anything takes college. Even worse, the implied idea that raising your kids at home isn't contributing to society. My guess is she's been a cat lady for decades.
@@comicus6769she lived in a time where if you suggested to a man that he stay home and raise children, he would have laughed at her. She means doing Great Things which people cared about. Women just raised kids and everyone assumed they always would while men got to fill the history books with their efforts. I can see her perspective. She wanted to contribute more than just pumping out more babies.
The difference now is everyone follows the advice of that one girl and goes whether or not they know what they want to do in life. And then proceed to go in debt and have their lives ruined because going was useless for them. I like how they show both sides of this situation. If you can go you should go but until the colleges lower prices to something kids can afford without going into debt it is too much of a risk. Too many people are stuck working off student loans at mcdonalds.
@@superfluffyshmoopy299 There was no Federal Financial Aid in 1958. That one girl who doesn't know what to do with her life comes from a family that has money. When the man spoke of 1/3 of smart students go to college he felt that more kids should go. Far fewer students went to college compared with now in the year 2019. Money played a big part in the decision as you can see by those that raised their hands.
I love the woman speaking at 1:02. Her viewpoint is still relevant today - that *most* people aren't ready to commit themselves to a lifetime of debt and a career by the age of 18. Back then, there was significantly more pressure to stay home, have kids, and just do what you were told, but it sounds like she has different goals. Great video.
It's only because we've rewritten history to define women as being oppressed, helpless and passive when they've always been domineering in much the same as they are now.
I just turned 18 and graduate in 2 months. I have absolutely no clue what I wanna do with my life. I'm taking a year off to figure it out but I feel so pressured by my family to come up with some sort of idea as soon as possible. Can you imagine being so confident in getting a job despite only finishing high school. Not even that confident that I will with a college degree. I wish
Andrew Acevedo they should but I highly doubt the teacher is still alive. He looks like he’s in his 50 so he probably was born in the early 1900’s and the students would be in their late 70s if they made it that long.
If any of them is alive today, would be between 79 years old or 81 which I doubt they are still alive. When this video was taken their average age was 18 or 20 years old.
This is a pretty deep sociological discussion for 1958, at least on record. High school kids those days must really have felt the pressure of the government wanting them to pursue a higher education in the wake of sputnik.
That young lady made such an excellent point that whatever you learn does not go to waste you never know what might happen as your life goes on where u might need to fall back on those skills
I've dropped out of college 4 times. I'm 26 now. I make more money then most of my friends who have their bachelor'and I only have my HS diploma . I'm currently in community college for the 4th time right now and I'm convinced college really isn't for everyone.
For everyone saying teens back then seemed so well spoken and mature, consider this: Back then, people weren't used to being recorded, and, when asked to participate in something being recorded, the expectation was that you wanted to pull out the best and brightest and you wanted everyone to look polished and make a good impression. Today, since we record ourselves all the time, there's no longer a feeling of wow this is being recorded so I want to sound good. I don't think the people back then were necessarily so different, I just think the expectation of appropriate behavior in public recordings was different!
Wtf, do you even know what you're talking about. Video tape kids back then and do the same for kids now. You'll see a lot of immature kids now then ever. They have no respect for teachers, elders or their education. Not all but more than ever have become toxic. That's why Americans have an even worst educational system in 2018.
I always assumed in these times that women were never really heard especially young women but that girl with the short hair was running this interview 👏🏼
That's because the media likes to portray the times in extreme stereotypes. I was born in 1958, and I constantly hear younger generations give false ideas about what it was like growing up in the 1960s and 1970s.
Interesting segment. A good argument for free public college. No one should have to be in debt to improve themselves to be able to benefit themselves and our society.
In France university is free but govt rations it but putting students in tracts. Academic v trade. I remember older siblings saying it was this way when they grew up. If you were on an academic track but couldn’t afford college then you went into military or found unskilled job.
@Rohan Danday that's not what anxiety is moron, I don't want to be spoon fed. I earn everything I get from hard work. But I still have social anxiety and just anxiety in general. You are not wrong that many kids nowadays are spoiled but you totally don't understand what real anxiety is at all. And honestly I envy that in some regard.
Maybe she even spent 10 years in college and career, and then didnt have much time for kids when she was 35, or as energy for kids. I suppose no choice is perfect. At least she has the sense to see she doesnt simply have to do what everyone else does just because its "normal".

That girl was completely right in saying that knowledge is never waisted. But when I say that it doesn’t mean necessarily formal knowledge. But everything you learn, can’t be taken away from you. College is a great space to learn because you have great teachers who will make you question the way you see things now, and also a lot of other students with whom you can share your views and learn from theirs as well. But it surely isn’t necessary if you feel like that isn’t your path. Just keep studying whatever it is, keep learning. It will be handy at some point.
Generally speaking, knowledge is never wasted. This is, unless you go to a school where they shove an ideology down your throat while paying for it as student loans for years while flipping burgers since your diploma doesn't help you get any real job. In other words, you should prioritize what you need to learn over what you want to study.
Everytime in middle school when my teacher wanted to do a debate people just end up talking over each other. They never shut up and let the person speak.
I think times have changed. Even the comments on this video discussing how they're debating politely, everyone just resorts to insults and name calling. "Rus Lemus" for example lol.
It’s because they all probably had stable families and enough support. It’s a fact that teens today are more likely to be depressed or to have anxiety.

Expensive? I’m from Texas, north of Dallas, if google is somewhat accurate, community college is $3-4K a year, A&m is 12k a year. What’s that? $30k for tuition total. I know room and board is a factor but 30-40 grand is NOT expensive and well worth it.
Interesting how it's discussed that not going to college is a "waste". Many decades later, and here we have a crisis where these peoples children are overwhelmed with student loan debt.
Greg Pettis I’m sorry, is that the title of a book? Why do you have so many capitalized words? People who go to college aren’t poisoned. That is what is so frightening about some so-called conservatives in recent times. Conservatives are overwhelmingly polling that higher education is evil. In just this past decade, this has become the mindset quickly. Welcome back to the dark ages!
Lucy Smith Nobody brought it up? @@WW-jh2ge If someone from some other post called it "poison" then keep your comment tailored to that post and in that post. And I looked at your article. The article, graphs, and data did not show anything about whether or not Republicans think cost of college should be reduced. It's displaying whether or not Republicans believe college has an overall negative or positive impact on the country. And here it actually proves against your point. Up until 2015 it shows that Republicans do believe that college has an overall positive impact on the country. Only very recently has it switched. "As recently as two years ago, most Republicans and Republican leaners held a positive view of the role of colleges and universities. In September 2015, 54% of Republicans said colleges and universities had a positive impact on the way things were going in the country; 37% rated their impact negatively. By 2016, Republicans’ ratings of colleges and universities were mixed (43% positive, 45% negative). Today, for the first time on a question asked since 2010, a majority (58%) of Republicans say colleges and universities are having a negative effect on the way things are going in the country, while 36% say they have a positive effect." Now also it does not say anywhere in the article provided why they had such a polarizing switch on view of college recently. My take on the reasoning behind that switch is that Republicans maybe are feeling that the cost of college for what you get is too high and at the end it still does not guarantee you a job or guarantee an increase in standard of living. I believe a combination of media becoming echo chambers for their ideology, as well as the media and other common social outlets used in dividing the parties, and the cost of college increasing is what makes these Republicans have a change in view. But anyways, keep generalizing all Republicans go back to your echo chambers. The fact that it seems you have either barely read the source you have provided is unsettling. I am not even a Republican and I felt compelled to say something.
Not sure why its described a waste, if these people are really doing what they want to do and it will make then content. Does making more money really mean a 'better' life ?
So interesting. Even back then women had more of a “progressive” mentality. Maybe because men never had to compromise between career and family and at that point in history women could “have it all” if they chose to. And to hear that black gentlemen talking about marriage and family in that way was kinda nice. I hope he accomplished his ideal family scenario.
Interesting because now the divorce rate is so heavily initiated by females who think in such a way, seemingly produced by women like these with respects to their influence onto the next generations. Nearly 70% rate. 1 in 4 women are registered for mental health drugs in their adult years to ease the lonlieness and anxiety of work life. And often these ladies end up single and shaming everyone but themselves for the way thei lives turned out. Doesn’t seem it ended up as well as they hoped when they were only 18. Might be better to use this as an example to lead our next generation from making the same mistakes.
@@LotusHart01 Women are more naturally inclined to family life. Just like men are naturally inclined to building careers that will successfully help to support their families. But that doesn't mean both sexes have to stay in those classic roles. They both should be able to explore what fits best for the individual. Plenty of women homemakers that never had even the opportunity to have a career have been miserable as a housewife and raising children was not their thing. RogueSquadronWeapons well really it would have been of equal expense because of inflation I think
Gabriel Codina nope
Gabriel Codina no because wage rates have not risen to match the rate of inflation so even taking inflation into consideration, it is still wayyy more expensive now
Gabriel Codina minimum wage would have to be like 28 dollars to be relatively as high as it was back then
Wage rates have risen with inflation in jobs with marketable skills. The unskilled labor market has stagnated due to the flood of illegal immigration and people who have no drive to get a marketable skill.

Jack Napier Not at all. It hasn't changed.
Dwight Lives Matter I just told you how I went to college without money. So that’s how it’s always been?
If everyone can go to college, the value of a college degree would drop. That's the sad truth.
@Joel Surrett That's not the cause of inflation, debt based money, i.e. fiat, and debaement of the currency is.
@Rex Rampage I think that the increase in availability of loans and grants to students has affected the cost of education because the schools know that students will have said loans/grants. It's not the only or even main factor, but I do think it has contributed.

OldDogNewTrick which one were you in this group Bernie?

People who go to college aren’t poisoned. That is what is so frightening about some so-called conservatives in recent times. Conservatives are overwhelmingly polling that higher education is evil. In just this past decade, this has become the mindset quickly. Welcome back to the dark ages!

Today, for the first time on a question asked since 2010, a majority (58%) of Republicans say colleges and universities are having a negative effect on the way things are going in the country, while 36% say they have a positive effect."
Now also it does not say anywhere in the article provided why they had such a polarizing switch on view of college recently.
