If you’re also a carpenter in the USA like I am, part of the problem is people choose speed over quality. Many “higher end” builders don’t even want you adding biscuits to door and window casing. Seems like a cultural difference.
@lenny5355; Shoyan-san is *good*, and has practical ways to do better work... The opportunity to learn from different cultures is a huge "plus", and your interest and openness to this speaks well of you!
As a Scandinavian Carpenter/Construction worker, it is fascinating to watch how building a house or other construction is done in other countries, special with a country with a love for wood.
I don't doff my cap very often but this guy is the real deal. He keeps his tools sharp and works efficiently. It's a privilege to watch a master at work.
Not alien, _less profitable._ The U.S. maximizes for mass production and economies of scale, not for producing quality structures. For rock-bottom final costs to customers, U.S. builders use much sloppier methods.
@@Hertz2laughsure doesn't feel like rock bottom price for the customers, more like rock bottom cost to the investors then we get charged like 500k anyways.
@@Hertz2laugh not necessarily. The Japanese are masters of wood while Americans are the masters of steel, concrete & brick structures. Even residential American houses have superior concrete foundations on average, use more brick & concrete in design. American infrastructure in more stable however Japanese design is neat, clean & legendary in its aesthetic.
19:54 I love this. What a great video again. Glad to see that in one corner of the world people still appreciate high quality craftmanship over just rushing it to make it cheap and get to the next jobsite.
Did Shoyan ever think when he was younger that his carpentry would be admired by millions of people from all over the world. A true experienced master craftsman!
The Mark of a great carpenter is one who takes delicate care with every angle and every detail that he puts into his work and that's what you do. You are a master at this
Thank you for sharing again, I love to watch your videos. You are not only a master craftsman but also your videos get better and better. The montage of the risers sliding in was brilliant.
You are a one stop shop. You do everything. Here in the states most trades have specialized. A stair builder might build only stairs. Someone that doesn’t specialize might forget about the floor thickness on the ground floor and the second floor causing stumbling. And they only have to buy tools for that specialty. I have built cabinets and trim most of my work career. But when I work on my own house I do it all including plumbing and electrical.
Thank you for the beautiful work with the cutting board.... My wife is very happy.... my Japanese knives are very nice.... thank you ♥️ it looks a lot like my Construction Master in Puerto 🇵🇷 Rico
Shoyan that "super machine" is something else. That's a really cool design. The fact that it feeds it back to you. Truly a one man operation. Thx for the great content as always 🙌🏿
I'm only an amateur woodworker but I have built my own staircase. I saw so many 'upgrades' in this video that I would use in a next iteration. I absolutely love watching these videos - this man works with precision and peace, it's a joy to watch him work.
I don't have the vocabulary to describe just how beautiful and magnificent this work is Shoyan san! The look was perfect, and I can only imagine what the smell is like. I'm only a DIY'er, but my talent doesn't even get close to what you can produce!
LOVE the 'super surfacer!' I have never even seen a tool like that. Too bad I have no use (or room) for such an impressive machine in my very small shop... :( BTW - I love watching how you integrate traditional techniques and hand tools into your modern projects.
As usual, a splendid job. Personally I'm most impressed by your work with the old handtools , the handplanner, the chisel and how you compress the wood with the hammer.
Your work is inspiring and enlightening, even though I live on the other side of the planet I feel so grateful to learn from a master carpenter. Thank you for sharing.
Lived in Japan for a short while and kicking myself for not taking the opportunity to learn the art of Japanese carpentry. I just love their dedication and thoroughness in all they do.
This is top quality craftsmanship! I've built a few housed stringer (using pine) stairs but you are very much a superior carpenter compared to me. Much respect to you sir!
When I watch a Japanese master carpenter work. All I feel is envy. I wanted to build furniture as a trade. This is furniture as a staircase. To call it precision is an understatement. Thanks for a great video.
That’s what I thought exactly. He made it like a piece of furniture. Really inspiring and a gift to watch anyone with his talent. I’m new to the channel but he seems like a nice humble person.
All your videos are captivating and beautifully crafted. The composition of the shot at 19:56 however, is particularly delightful. Thank you for your videos!
This is why I wished I knew Japanese and could go there and learn from a master carpenter such as yourself. As always, beautiful work and you just continue to show us your masterful skills. Thank you for sharing. Cheers :)
The pride and craftmanship is amazing! YET! Given almost everything made of softwood has a finite lifespan, everything shown will decompose back to the earth. The thing to remember, like drinking a fine bottle of wine, is to respect the man who made it and appreciate his skill and hard work to bring you enjoyment. Everything poured into his projects reflects the dedication to his craft with the eye towards that enjoyment. How many children, adults, and elderly will climb this simple staircase, not hearing a sound, not having a worry, all because of Mr. Shoyan's dedication.
Quality not quantity 🤝 most houses in Australia r volume built no quality anymore.. awesome to see a master carpenter taking time to make a quality home even though its not his own home he builds it as if it were 👍🏽
The grunt when the bottom riser didn't roll in hit home. "Dammit, I knew it wasn't going to go, but I had to go and try anyway." Carpentry is the best trade in the world and you are excellent at it. Great video.
ありがとうございました、とても楽しかったです。 The small landing is very common in older houses in the uk. As you said, it allows easy access to either side. I love the super surfacer! What a wonderful tool, never seen one before. In the space of 22 minutes I have learned so much, thank you.
You make it look SO EASY! LOL But I couldn't make it look THAT GOOD with 50 years of experience!! So clean, such straight lines, perfectly symmetrical, and not a split in sight!!! EXCELLENT WORK, SHOYAN!!! - YOU ROCK!!!! I hope you and the family are having a GREAT 2025 so far! May this New Year bring you Good Luck, Fulfilled Positive Wishes, and Happiness in Abundance! Be Well, Be Safe, and Be AWESOME!!!
Mr Shoyan I have been a carpenter for 41 years and consider myself a pretty good carpenter, but watching you I wish I had half the skill that you do.
High praise indeed.
And we’ll deserved 🙂

Can you imagine the howls of protest when the customer sees the price of this quality of wood? 😂

The part where all the risers come in place one by one without seeing a cut in the video was really well made, such a satisfying effect
As a Scandinavian Carpenter/Construction worker, it is fascinating to watch how building a house or other construction is done in other countries, special with a country with a love for wood.
Which country loves wood?
I don't doff my cap very often but this guy is the real deal.

The shavings from the plane are fascinating.
The Japanese have planing competitions where they try to make the longest and thinnest unbroken shavings. There's videos on UA-cam.
Whoah ive never seen a super surfacer before
I want one!
It's so cool!
same! not super common in the US
Man... this probably looks like alien technology for builders in US :D
Great work
Not alien, _less profitable._

Man no kidding. I feel like we could count on one hand the companies in the US that could even build something like this lol....

Es gibt nichts besseres als Japanische Holzverarbeitung. Einfach nur Respekt. Inklusive der Sägen🥰

Sharing the skills of a lifetime.. The glue part to avoid splits was really great.
It is impossible not being impressed by your craftmanship Shoyan

If Mr Shoyan's work is any indication, can you imagine just how much more superior Japanese homes are to American?! Beautiful Craftsmanship!
Humility, focus, craftsmanship, dedication to art and patience are the many lessons gleaned from this lesson - thank you for sharing your wisdom…
Japanese quality and craftsmanship. Incredibly soothing to watch the process.
First class craftsman as always 👍🏻👍🏻

Just wonderful work as usual Shoyan. I love that Super Surfacer, what a great machine.
My family and I love watching your channel. We sit down as a family and binge watch for far too long!
Simple, yet beautiful. Thank you for this video Shoyan San.
It’s great to watching a craftsman who knows his stuff!
Amazing work. I can't remember EVER seeing a hand plane on an American construction site. Love watching how detailed your work is.
All is good with the world when Shoyan builds a house ❤️

A block on-top of a board when cutting a long board prevents the cut off from falling to the ground. Amazing little details.
Definition of a master carpenter

The glue on the back of the stair risers is absolutely genius!
I’m not sure what was sharper the man or the Tools👍🏻great work a real professional !!!
Hats off! Your customer would be very impress with the love and care you build that house.

Most enjoyable. It's been a few years since I made/ installed a staircase.
The editing of this video is as great as the craftsmanship.

What a great deal on that used super surfacer!
