- JD Vance said at a conference for conservatives last week that the UK could become "the first truly Islamist country that will get a nuclear weapon" after Labour's victory in the General Election.
The 39-year-old Ohio senator's comments appeared to insinuate that the UK had become an Islamic state.
He told the National Conservatism conference on Thursday: "I have to beat up on the UK - just one additional thing. I was talking with a friend recently.
"And we were talking about, you know, one of the big dangers in the world, of course, is nuclear proliferation, though, of course, the Biden administration doesn't care about it.
"And I was talking about, you know, what is the first truly Islamist country that will get a nuclear weapon and we were like, maybe it's Iran, you know, maybe Pakistan already kind of counts and then we sort of finally decided maybe it's actually the UK, since Labour just took over."
Despite the apparent dig at Labour, Vance is said to be on good terms with Britain's Foreign Secretary, David Lammy.
The pair met in May when Lammy was still in opposition, and he later referred to the senator as a "friend".
James O'Brien looks at Donald Trump's running mate pick, and would be vice-president, exploring what this could mean for future UK-US relationships.

Vance is a child of trauma that has probably never sought therapy for that trauma, he found solace in religious horseshit and now thinks the answer to all life problems can be found in Christian mythology.
I read a book that says children who have suffered abuse have 3 paths in adulthood. They remain victims often becoming deeply depressed in the process, they become survivors going on to live rich and fulfilling lives, or they become an abuser themselves. Politically I know where I place Vance

It is very simple to explain JD Vance's volte face on Trump: no holds barred oppotunism and ambition coupled with zero moral fibre, US style.
Vance is a crude opportunist. "Hillbilly Elegy" was calculated to tap into the zeitgeist in the dawn of the MAGA era and it sold millions, making him a multi-millionaire.
I think it also resonated with people dealing with the opioid crisis and how it's affected families and I think that's been big in how he has managed to get such a toe hold in

The interview he gave in a podcast a while back was a little alarming. He wanted to get rid of the civil service and replace them with people loyal to him and Trump. That would be pretty fascistic.
Trump issued an executive order at the end of his presidency to do just that. Biden rescinded it. It’s in Project 2025. The blue print for the next Trump term. JD Vance is anti abortion in any circumstances and IVF. He’s anti Ukraine. He’s an intellectual Trump.

I think his "conversion" has got more to do with personal career advancement and the sight of dollar signs flashing in front of his eyes. Principles dont seem to matter.
I've found this to often be the case. I've seen many folks (some of whom were staunch socialists) go full far right after the loss of a loved one (either through death or divorce but usually divorce). I think this ideology of hating the other (no matter who they are) is very attractive to those who feel frustrated, powerless, and scorn. I'm sure there's psychology books about it somewhere.

Vance is a very specific kind of person and one whose beliefs will always be very malleable. Not because he changes his mind with new information, as anyone should, but because his only value is to get ahead. He will say whatever it takes to get him there because other than getting ahead, he doesn't really believe in anything.

I'm Irish. Never been to America. Even I can see that there is no path to high political office unless you fall in behind Trump on the Republican side. Biden has blocked (temporarily) the alternative path. Vance knows what is realistic options are.
I‘m utterly shocked that so very many don‘t either seem to be capable or just are unwilling to see the writing on the wall… same as beginning of the 30ies a little less than 100 years ago.

For the world, he withdrew from the Paris climate agreement. He emboldened Putin and began to encourage a new, isolationist US outlook which basically gives up US leadership in the world.
