Also for clarification purposes, I do lyrics by ear rather than by looking it up, there are mistakes in the video's lyrics, which I've corrected in annotes.
This song was decades ahead of its time.......
Most of BRs work is. They are gonna be huge this decade.
Literally. 🙄
Seeing as how Greg is an actual genius when it comes to lyric writing, the fact that he was so ahead of his time with these lyrics is shocking but it also isn’t
"Ain't life a mystery?" is the line, I think.
Good call :) ' similized bar-code, quick ID...." & "I don't know how to live, but I got a lot of toys" as well as some others. I am a stickler about these things! ~I do thank the person who posted for their efforts!!!~ I will say though, one word can change the meaning of it all! Greg Graffin and Co don't play around with words lol! They know their ish!!!! ONE*
It is. If you listen to it while not looking at the lyrics it's obvious.
Yeah I almost never look at lyrics to songs
Yeah and "I don't know how to live" not "kneel"
More mistakes than that.
I always feel so ironic listening to this on youtube...
keg Jager fr
I always feel so ironic signing along near my father who is a middle class intellectual
The irony is that it was Green Day who broke big from this scene, because they were worst band to come out of this genre. All others - Bad Religion, Pennywise, Big Drill Car, etc, were much better. The Offspring and later Blink 182 did do pretty well (obviously), but even they were much better than GD.
@@Nominay The first 4 albums of green day are actually pretty good. I don't know how and why they turned mainstream but they have only been bad since that. Before that you could argue that they were good. But I guess everyone has a different musical taste.
@@xxjumbo_schreiner_fanboy_6143 The only GD song I like is Dissapearing Boy. Everything else of theirs is unlistenable to me. It's a perturbing mystery to me how they became and continue to be so popular. To me it would be like Matchbox 20 selling 10's of millions of records. Songs like When I Turn Around sound more like M20 than pop punk.
This band is how I learned all my big words....
I didnt learn the big words from BR but they were the first musicians who could speak my language.

I cry and pray to JESUS CHRIST for you daily. ✝️
i’m a 21st century digital boy, but still listening to this :)
Today, more than ever before, we need this song.
My wife likes this song, but after 25 years she's just now learned that it's not The Offspring who did it. Ha!
LMFAO
i blame limewire
Hahahah
Divorce her immediately. Somebody as ignorant as her can't be good for you!
BOL!!!!
Only recently discovered this band, fucking love them!

Relevant songs never get old. This song stays forever. 🤘🤘🤘
I like how there's a Honda ad on this anti-mainstream culture commentary of a song.
Blame the record companies for that
think that's just UA-cam. But ironic no doubt!!!!
it's not like it's just for you
You watch ads.
over 30 years later, this is still so damn relevant
One of the greatest songs ever written.
I'll never forget warped tour GA in the late 90s I think it was. Just watched Bad Religion finish their set and decided to walk off while everyone seemed interested in watching Anti-Flag about to play. Wound up meeting Greg Graffen, got a picture and he signed my ticket stub which I have to this day. I grew up loving this band and jamming it omw to work today. This song hits close as hell today
I was surprised that they used king crimson's lyrics in here. wow, Now I have to go and re-listen to that as well.
I only know because I read it. Apparently Bad Religion were actually big prog fans though. They even had an album that leaned in that direction early on but it was not initially released or something and got shelved.
Great song...great band...so relevant...thanks for the post!
State of the world adress ---
love that bad religion predicted my existence a decade before i arrived
Sublime's Bradley, and Bad Religion Gaffin. Absolutely incredible writing. Anyone out there, keep a journal, lyrics are poetry, and poetry Is expression. Make you're own impact everyone! Always love!
I have stacks of books from the 80s til now and my handwriting has declined as my words are so TRUE.
Someday you'll know.

bad religion predicted the future. This sounds a lot like the current 21st century. first the Simpsons now bad religion.
***** oh yeah your right my bad.
They weren't really predicting the future, this stuff was already going on around them in the early 90's.
Vince it was a joke

Song is more relevant than now than when it was released
Shit!!!! I’ve become the lazy middle class intellectual 😳god help my son
I had the same thought. Well, until I spent every fucking night making videos of myself for work in the last two months.
Soooo, correction on the first chorus:
It should read, “I don’t know how to live, but I got a lot of toys.”
And the final bar on the chorus should read, “ain’t life a mystery yeah?”
This underscores the complexity of the song, as the verses are much more confident. The final bar of the chorus ending as a question betrays the true meaning of the song, which is “Screw you oldsters! I got life figured out... right?”
Oh yeah- I got the liner notes to back me
Valium is misspelled 🙄
That guitar riff is so catchy..
one of the best punk songs ever
best song on 21st century breakdown
The line towards the end "innocents raped by napalm fire" is lifted from King Crimson's "21st century schizoid man" which is probably one of the few examples of a punk band borrowing from a prog rock band.
Mike Reiss bad religion had a prog rock album Aswell
It's not like the title of the song is suggesting that the inspiration came from there, or anything. ;)
They just hated prog and mocked about that, the "daddy" and the "mommy" where satires of what they thought the prog rockers would become
Just my interpretation tho, only the composers know
And then proceeds to say 21st century schizoid boy a few seconds later, purely coincidental
'AINT LIFE A MYSTERY' ! not 'and like a mystery'... regardless of what may be in an album cover, those are the lyrics.
As someone who's grown up 2001-2020 till adulthood this is accurate to life growing up.
I always thought it was "ain't life a mystery"
as far as I know, you always thought right :)
That makes so much more sense then "and like a mystery"
It is the lyrics are wrong in other places too. Painful to watch. I downvoted.
My nephews were of the brisbane punks from the 80s I 62 and still listen to punk music love it
1973: 20th Century Boy
1990: 21st Century Digital Boy
The end was a king crimson reference...wow
I'm surprised about it. I rarely listen to Bad Religion and didn´t know this music. Today I listened to it and find a reference to my favorite prog band... Very good!
ironic how relevant this is to modern kids.. they dont even play outside or anything , their parents just give them ipans
"'Cause I'm a twenty-first century digital boy
I don't know how to live but I got a lot of toys
My daddy's a lazy middle-class intellectual

Great song, both music and lyrics.
For a while I've been listening more to the version from Stranger than Fiction but this is awesome as well.

i love this song
Mega track Love it a lot since Years . Greets and Love from Andreas Hamburg Germany big heart
most underated band ever !
2022 and im listening to this banger 🫶
It's railing against anarchism and conformity. We are who we choose to be, no one is in control of our destinies but us. We choose our fate, we choose our path, we forge our way though life with our hearts acting as the hammer, and our mind as the anvil. Do not give into convenience as an answer, and violence only as a last, last resort. That was the dream of the founding fathers who set forth upon this nation, no one person to have unlimited power. People often forget about that.
So many memories coming back.
If you’re listening to this, you’re the antagonist.
It's 'I don't know how to read but i've got a lot of toys'

Sorry, but I think you messed up a number of these lyrics, Mate.
i love the references to king crimson.
I don't know how to live. Not kneel.
and its Valium... not vallium.
"Aint' LIFE (not like) a mystery?"
Zezman In the description, it says that the owner of the channel writes lyrics by ear, not looking them up.
Tyler Sullivan that's usually a poor way of going about it. Especially because the lyrics are how you know that the band is trying to say.
@@Gr3nadgr3gory he fucking fixed it with annotes ( don't bd mad please)

This is happening right now, and still going to happen until this society collapses in their own negative values, we need a revolution from inside of us, in our consciences, leading by a common purpose... oh man, we're so screwed nowadays, but there´s some sparkle emerging right now, hope gets bigger and can convince more and more minds.

After 30 years listening what Greg sings, finally gonna see them tomorrow --- No fucking Control! ---
once i lisend to tis song non stop
This is actually the version off Suffer, not the version that would be remastered and re released a few years later on Stranger Than Fiction. First time I've heard this version.
So they are able to summarize two of their previous album (Suffer and No Control) in a song about the 21st century generation. I'm impressed how times change and much of the rest is immutable.
You rock n roll... One of my favorite songs

Thanks for the video!
the last chorus is the same as the second "I don't know how to read".
It's a common mistake on these lyrics sites.
-> I cannot comprehend but I've got a lot of apps
For those of You out there who...Just like the "Judging a Book by it's Cover", hearing of this Band and suddenly and automatically think they know all there is to discover about Bad Religion, as well as the various Member's persona's, the quote, "Agenda" of the Band supposedly, that are throughout the Lyrics found in an amongst the Band's Songs; Basically, a whoooooole lot of "fear mongering" and prejudice . The majority of Bad Religion's Songs are written by "Mr. Brett". He has a talent for emptying out the vast vernacular He obviously has. Some of His Lyrics are almost like Poems...Stanza's of Poetry. So, in closing...Bad Religion have NO HATE nor derogative towards the different Topics upon which they make a Song out of. A few of them may be Atheist, however they are not PUSHING their beliefs; or lack of, upon Other People like those "Bible thumpers" and CHURCH Vigilantes all over the World continue to do, Day after Day. How hypocritical.
So in closing, the shit that's being tossed back and forth is nothing but jargon. Wow, I almost forget...GREG! Greg is My fucking Hero. THE END.
Preach it
WELL PUT PROPS DUDE
CellarDoorx06 It's too bad whoever the lead singer is can't sing.
You can only “close” once, dude. But thanks for the sermon....I guess
Doesn't anyone else find this kind of ironic, We are listening to this song on UA-cam out of some sort of digital device. ( Great song though )
Ain't life a mystery*

This is one of my favorite songs :D
@Allurade Well your right on that one, but if you know the lyrics, why watch a lyric video?
I watch em cause when I run out of data for the month it loads faster lol rather than say a music video
I never noticed the nod to 21st Century Schizoid Man at the end before. Nice.
wasn't this song in some old videogame? I wanna say it was in one of the Tony Hawk games
Always thought it was " Aint life a mystery"
ITS “AINT LIFE A MYSTERY” and not “and like mystery”
I love the nod to King Crimson.
Good sound quality.

ah, give the man some credit. it's a nice gesture. i see so often people who don't know eachother insulting eachother here (safe, annonymous from behind the screen). come on guys. there is enough shit in the world to take care of than waste your time on dissing strangers who mean well. innit? thx TRD!
Another edit for you: at 0:20 it is "The things YOU'RE offering me"... not "The things your offering me".
There is also only one "L" in "Valium".
