Not sure what the point is, I'm sure you said the same about the cheese rolling lol, the point is fun. That's about it, really enjoying your bemused reactions to British culture 🏴🙂
Im a fellow ottery st mary resident who is counting down to tar barrels. Both sons who live elsewhere in the country are coming back, we are working out how to get back to ottery after 3pm when roads shut, preparing for the cannons to go off in the early hours of the morning bracing for people to park badly in the road and as we are 60...are definitely staying clear 😁
In Lewes, on 5th November, they roll burning tar barrels through the streets of the town as part of the commemorations for the 17 martyrs that were burned to death in the town. Not sure about Ottery St Mary but the practice may have had a link to commemorating those martyrs burned alive for heresy.
I went to this when I was a child. It was fun. The streets weren't so crowded then. You just learnt to keep out of the way af the person with the barrel. I grew up in Devon, there was also something similar in a town closer to where I grew up in Hatherleigh. I don't know if that still runs.
I've been to this event and it is a great atmosphere, tradition, fun and a bit of danger. I'm of the old fashion opinion that you go to these things (example: the Isle of Man TT ) at your own responsibility of being there. We have the NHS for medical needs for which we pay our tax and the rest is down to you being accountable for yourself. Don't look for blame elsewhere. Long live the traditions and life without some danger is no feeling of life. We still have that caveman DNA.
You know this is EXACTLY the reason we love going on narrowboating holidays. Because it's Victorian industrial technology, it's only safe if you keep your wits about you. It all looks idyllic and peaceful but there's no health and safety, no guy in a yellow jacket and no safety rails. 80,000 gallons of water lifting your 80 ton boat is not to be sniffed at, it will suck you down and kill you dead if you're not paying attention.
No it dates back further than the gunpowder plot the real origin is unknown but it’s either fumigation from the plague or there was other evidence to do with the Spanish Armada or pagan times
Hello , Bonfire Night ,Guy Fawkes Night, November 5th ( same thing) is celebrated every year in the Uk ,it marks the date of failed plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill the King , but the plot was discovered, they were arrested and charged with High Treason , they were hanged and then their bodies were drawn and quartered , justice was a little harsh then ,the King decreed bonfire and fireworks parties /events should be held to celebrate the fact that the plot failed ,bonfres and fireworks events/parties are held every November 5th to mark the day .The main organiser of the plot wanted to establish Catholic rule in England. If you would like to see a bonfire night party have a look at the one held in Lewes every year ❤❤.

The striped tops are rugby shirts nothing to do with convicts😂 People don’t sue each other in UK, well rarely.😊
The rich love love a court case 😊
The Rugby shirts are made of heavy weight pure cotton, ideal for carrying a burning lump of wood.
How great is this, The Brits have these traditions for ages and keep them going !
Been there - Done that. Great Guy Fawkes Night.

Your idea of getting in the barrels sounds even more fun. 😆
One of our many traditions that we've had for centuries, pretty sure Starmer will try and stop all of them if he stays in number ten

You have got to listen better, they explained where this came from and they also said that the insurance went up from 50 pound to 20.000 pound

Does this have anything to do with Guy Fawlks??

Why does there have to be a point?
Women do it too.
And don't forget the children's barrels
We have a lot of good qualities, but we are also a nation of pyromaniacs.
We're an island of dangerous single minded lunatics. How else do you conquer the entire planet?
Sadly you don't do it by being nice! 😂
Are we interested in mercan opinion?
there is no point just go & party
You have a sexy husky voice.
Dangerous? Really? American's play rugby in full body gear.
