I do think this 12 to 24 months expiry for eye shadow palettes is ridiculous! I have so much makeup that I might not touch a palette for that long. I agree that liquids and especially mascara should be tossed more frequently. Since they put a year expiration date on EVERYTHING nowadays probably to cover themselves legally, that seems to scare people into unnecessary repurchases.
Tips to go by is if it looks off, smells off or no longer works, or is walking on its own, toss it. 👍🏼😂

I think a lot of people still haven't fully connected the dots on the fact that an influencer's collection of makeup (or clothing, etc) is used for work. We don't hire a carpenter and then go out and buy one of every tool we saw them use. We don't watch a TV show about the restaurant industry and think, "An industrial fryer is EXACTLY what my home kitchen needs!" I don't want to emulate an influencer's huge collection, but I DO want to benefit from it by listening to someone make comparisons between shades and across product lines.

This is silly but I'm like that but with plants specifically.
Every time I'm like "Okay, we're passing and ignoring the plant selection" I always find myself having to fight myself to not look, and when I do look and can't find a plant I want, I still feel the itch to just buy a plant, even if I don't like it, just to satisfy an itch- Which is really stupid, because buying plants I don't like doesn't actually satisfy it.
And if it's not a plant, it's some kind of plant product. Like, I currently have the *fattest* itch to transition my plant collection over to semi-hydroponics and it is *not* leaving, which is really annoying because I don't have the money to buy the blend I want, and if I ever do get the money to do that, I know I'm gonna be struggling with purchasing more plants, because it's supposed to make plant care a lot easier on top of making them grow better.
I mean, it makes some sense, because buying plants and growing medium for me is the equivalent of buying pens, pencils, paints and paper for an artist, but when a hobby takes up so much space, it becomes an absolute battlefield when it comes to keeping your house in working condition, and keeping yourself entertained.

@@banheesos And hoarding is a form of storage, but you wouldn't call hoarding "storing things".
Same thing with over-consumption vs compulsive spending. Over-consumption is when you buy two bottles of hairdye, because you thought you might need it, but only ended up needing the one. Compulsive spending is when you're buying every bottle of hair dye you can come across, even if you don't like the colour, just because you feel the need to.
It's about your frame of mind. Calling compulsive spending "over-consumption" is an under-exaggerated, because you can always decrease your rate of consumption to make it normal, but compulsive spending comes from an underlying issue with your current situation, and not doing so can leave you feeling anxious or paranoid.

They're not gonna sell stuff that'd put them at risk like that. It's a reasonable expectation of time that you'd use a product for after purchase.

In engineering or building you also have where something's "max load" doesn't mean one more gram added and it's going to fail, it's backed off from where the actual failure point is found to be to create a buffer zone and increase safety. If companies were certifying things as okay right up to the very point that they're definitely not there would be a lot more accidents (or infections) and liability, so it can seem frustrating from the consumer standpoint, but does have some solid reasoning behind it

So I was absolutely addicted to buying makeup in my 20s. Even now I see all the new releases and want them, but I've finally reached a phase of realizing that I had way too much and wasn't using any of it. I barely leave the house these days, so my stuff just sits in waiting for the magical day I'm suddenly able to be out and about all the time. The last couple of years I've really tried to cut down on new purchases and to be more mindful of "do I need this or not?" and "will I use this?". I have been going through everything I own, one category at a time, and really take stock of what I have and try it all on. I ended up sending boxes of makeup (like more than four) to my cousins to share among themselves, and what I couldn't share after trying I finally allowed myself to just throw it out. Wrong color? Gone. Hate the smell? Outta here. Formula sucks? Trash. For so long I felt like it was a waste to throw stuff out, even stuff that was seriously old, but have finally reached the stage where I really only want to keep what I love. I still have a huge collection, and intend to test out my remaining products even further to help trim it down even more and make note of who's formula's I like the best.

I do have a crazy amount of cosmetics, and I ignore expiration dates if they even have any. My criteria for when products should be tossed - if the texture or color has changed; if they smell off; if I get any amount of irritation (which honestly doesn't happen). I mostly toss products that no longer work for me the way I want them to - which can be a me problem or a product problem, I don't know. Commercially made products that have preservatives can and should last a while. I wouldn't keep mascara for years, but then again, it won't perform as well as you'd want it to anyway if it is old. I have an obscene number of lip products as well, and rarely do they go off. If a lipstick gets weird, I toss it, of course. Powdered products, pressed or loose, I don't toss unless the texture changes and it becomes unusable. Powdered products won't spoil as they do not typically have any organic ingredients - at least not the ones I own. If I really do not like a product enough to keep using it, I will give it away rather than let it sit and rot.

Balance is one thing- but honesty is another. The people on UA-cam telling us to buy this or that - need to be honest and tell us that they are gifted items, have a dedicated budget for this and that the video or TikTok is actually work. There needs to be that disclaimer on every video. Many people do and I think it is great - but more need to do that.
As for using make up past expiration dates - that is so personal- I recently discarded some makeup because it was a little off and I had no desire to see how irritated my skin would become. Had good years and it was still very clean.
You need to do a series on how to keep make up clean. Some people open a palette and it is still as gorgeous as when they first opened it - and four colors have hit pan. Others are so messy I would open for fear of what is lurking inside.
As for luxury consumption- that is a personal choice. But please don’t mortgage your house to pay for a Sephora haul because you saw it on UA-cam. Common sense please.

Heres what Ive concluded: It depends on two things, your life style & pocket book. I live fairly isolated so I dont go out a ton. So, for me store make-up gets the job done. I only own 10 makeup products total. That said, there are still luxury brands that just have better pigments, wear & feel that are worth the price. // Your amount of makeup doesnt bother me at all. It hasnt changed your ethics . Youre always honest and down to earth. Plus, you donate/ give away and dont horde. And then I wasnt working at an office so I wasnt wearing makeup everyday like I used to. I mourned all those treasures. So I made some boxes to give away to some young ladies at church and my neices. I have decided to keep my purchases small, and use what I have because its awesome stuff!😂 I will keep giving away what I'm not using. If I see enough "pan" its going in the trash. I do believe one should be able to enjoy a luxury item if it makes you feel good and you can afford it, but within reason. I am striving for balance in all things. Thank you Robert for this video! ❤
Financially, this year has been devastating for my family. I will not buy things I don't need and especially if it's by L'Oreal. Mascara-gate took me tf outta buying L'Oreal for the rest of my life and I will never trust a Tiktoker again.
Edit: I must add this, as a "mature skinned" woman, I have to have a good foundation and right now I am using Giorgio Armani's luminous silk and it feels great on my skin. I just can't do drugstore foundation but I will do drugstore everything else!

Robert you are so right. I feel most of the makeup artist on UA-cam could care less about the viewer but what they can sell to us for making more money. I finally came to my senses and stopped viewing so many of them. I try to find out who is genuine and stay with them. Common sense. Thank you for exposing this problem.

I think that what's appropriate is going to be different from person to person. You and I actually had the conversation a few weeks ago! We totally understand that our collections are not the norm, but we can afford it, or we're sent thing that we enjoy and we use. And if we don't love it or have no use for it, we pass it on.

I like having a few options for color tones (foundation, blush, etc.) depending on the season... I can't imagine using the same color of blush or bronzer for 2-4 years 😱 Besides hygiene, life is way too boring to not buy a new pallette or smthn every so often 😌💖 Definitely throw away old & expired mascara, lippies, creamy products, etc.!!

I’ve definitely increased my spending on makeup in the last 4 years. My whole collection used to occupy a small corner of my dresser, now the whole top of my dresser has makeup products on it and I have a small shelf in a closet as well. I don’t feel bad about it because doing my makeup is something I enjoy and it’s relaxing. Do I need all of what I have? Certainly not, but I’m also trying to be a little more mindful of what I purchase now.

I will admit the only thing I regularly replace is mascara unless a product looks or smells a bit off 😂 Nail varnish I'm terrible for keeping way past expiry but I try to find unique colours so they're super hard to replace!

Nail polish doesn’t really go bad - the worst that will happen is the pigments might change or fade over time or it gets gloppy (which can be fixed with thinner and a good shake). This is coming from someone who has 600+ bottles 😉 I have a few 20 year old bottles in my collection that are still fine.

I think the underconsumption core is just a trend. Most everyday people do this anyway, it’s just influencers trying to virtue signal and come across relatable since the met gala, out of touch blacklisiting trend of last year

    • @phoenixfritzinger9185
      @phoenixfritzinger9185 Місяць тому

That was this year… and I think it ended up backfiring really bad like that girl who started the whole digital guillotine thing ended up getting cancelled for some inane crap and the Met Gala lady was still running around with all the other New York influencers doing stuff that was a lot more problematic than not really getting Marie Antoinette (like she ended up faking a HIV scare because those multi part TikTok “who the hell am I…” serieses were blowing up and she wanted to get on the trend because that’s what you’re supposed to do, get in on every single trend in existence)

Also I find project panning very stupid because it weakens the powders and they become more prone to breakage, especially when you travel. I think it's to avoid, but still using to the fullest your products.

Completely agree. I remember a flatmate when we were in our early student years adding alcohol based toner to a dried up mascara to make it go further! She got another 3 weeks use out of it but I REALLY wouldn’t try it myself!,😂😭

I've definitely been the odd man out. I've had at least one dresser for my makeup storage since I was about 17, and that was well before social media was even heard of, I've been a makeup addict, especially eyeshadow, since i was 12, and that was in 82, by 17 i used a 4 drawer dresser to hold my makeup. I never ever kept my makeup in the bathroom. It's always been in my room. Powder products definitely last a long time, especially when disinfected regularly, i do so after every use. Have been doing so since I started wearing it, however if a product smells, looks weird or is separating, don't care what it is, cream, liquid, powder, don't use it. You can still keep it for whatever reason but don't put it on your body. I have a lot from my teenage years, i keep it for sentimental reasons. I don't wear it. I have absolutely no shame with what i own. And yes i own a lot of eyeshadow. But its my hobby, my passion, my mother didn't understand why i wanted so many until i asked her why she liked to collect dolls, and my mom has a lot of dolls, after that she stopped giving me grief about why i have so many eyeshadow-palettes, and many that haven't been used in a while. As i say i not only get joy from looking at my collectibles but i also get to use them daily.

I think regularly throwing away expired/unused products regularly actually helps you be more mindful of your purchases.
Like oh, I barely used that lipstick and it's expired. Maybe I don't actually need a lipstick. Or I'll buy a smaller product so it's more likely I'll use it up.

i quite indulge in make up ( i worked as make up artist and love it so i like to buy more than i can use, but the thing i don't get at all is these ppl that use powder, see a glimpse of the pan and don't use it anymore. if i like the product as much as to hit the pan i use it until ALL the pan is showing and there's zero product left with a heavy heart. And as i read in the coments: cleaning your brushes helps with your skincare and longevity of powders

We are in an age where normal consumption has become underconsumption. I have read that brands/companies put an expiration date on the product way before the actual expiration date (I don't remember where I read it, but it is to avoid harm to the people). And also, using luxury brands depends on the product I think. You can buy some things from luxury brands that will last longer and is safer. Other times it does not worth it.

I use the same base products until i run out. Only thing i have multiples of are foundation, a summer and winter shade that i mix throughout the year and different concealer colours to match. Coloured products however, i do have way more of. But i've put them all in drawers/organizers and they're full, so now my rule is: one in means one out. And as soon as a product looks/smells different or gives me some form or a reaction, it goes into the bin.

OMG... the girl with the Naked palette. I had the OG first run palette with the eyeliner. A few years ago, I had to throw it away because it was irritating my eyes. Even powders go bad! And I cleaned it regularly.
