For Lolita, the author himself was actually a victim of childhood s.a., this novel is actually considered a semi-biographical novel since the main character who is a writer is HEAVILY based on his uncle who s.a. him through his entire child hood. He had written the novel as almost a way to express the pain and suffering he went through and it was a process of grief. It’s really interesting if you look into Nabakov’s life because this theme is in a ton of his books; he really truly could not heal from his traumatic childhood.
In my humble opinion, it's one of the greatest books ever written. The language is so beautiful, and the way the Humbert seduces the reader in a way, makes him so insidious and horrifying. People misunderstand this book a lot, but it is truly great. Nabokov was a great writer in general (I took a whole class about him in college), but Lolita was his finest, in my estimation. Lolita was my favorite lipstick color in the KVD range by far, it suited me best and I still buy dupes of it when I run out. I always think of the color as Lolita even if I'm buying some other brand's lipstick. What does that say about me, I don't know.
@@gmc5618Humbert is the ultimate unreliable narrator, trying to romanticize the terrible things he does to Dolores (the girl's real name--he even renames her!) and others. It creeps me out that there are readers who believe his version of things. I stand with Dolores.
really? that wasnt the vibe i got from it when i read it. it was a dark comedy, and relatable to a tweenage girl who was also feeling sexual desire to of course adult men because adult men are sexy lol... maybe i should reread it as an adult who can't stand sex anymore pfft
@@jake-amirblumenfeldwitz6068yeah, that's the problem with unreliable narrator stories - some people haven't learned that, for example, p*dophilia is wrong before they read the book
Former sephora beauty advisor here! KENDO is in fact owned by sephora which is why, if you’ve ever noticed, a lot of sephora employees tend to favour or push more when it comes to KENDO owned brands (even when they’re not necessarily the best *cough cough* olehenrikson). We directly benefit when we sell KVD, Fenty and other kendo brands, but they try to keep it hush hush about it with customers. I’m telling y’all this so you can be mindful when buying from huge conglomerates like sephora, because we are trained to tell you that our recommendations come from a place of honesty and non bias, but in practice we are often punished for not pushing KENDO brands.
@@Thiccbao a lot of people complained about receiving spoiled/expired products when buying olehenrikson. (Even though we check our declutter our stocks accordingly, so I assume that it’s the fault of the manufacturing company. On top of that: quite a number of customers would come back for an exchange or refund due to getting severe allergic reactions when using their products. Mind you: I worked in sephora Malaysia, and it could be our climate or weather that’s causing the allergic reactions. I myself have had poor experiences using Olehenrikson products, but a lot of my colleagues have had genuinely positive experiences.
For those confused about Goth = Santanic. During the Santanic panic of the 80s and 90s, goths were said to be devil worshipers. So a lot of evangelical and other Christian faiths shunned those in alternative clothing/styles. It is actually a popular trope in some films to have a goth girl become preppy, showing that she can become "pure" or "acceptable".
Considering that witchcraft was one of the catch-all terms for non Christian practices, there is basically no overlap with Satan, in fact a lot of "witchcraft" was simply folk medicine and what we would consider to be "wellness" today
@@O2BAmachine Christians consider it all to be of Satan per the Bible forbids all witchcraft. Do not be deceived. The Bible says there are many masquerading as angels of light. aka Demons pretending to be benevolent spirit guides etc. We must have discernment. I encourage you to look up some ex-witch testimonies 💖
They could have just change it to KVB instead of KVD and just say it means Kenzo Vegan Beauty and be done with it. And maybe ask other tattoo artists or other "dark" personas (e.g. female metal singers) for collabs to keep the connection but distance itself from Kat.
Adding Mikayla to the marketing was a major death sentence. It was already languishing in controversy and needing CPR to rehabilitate the brand. I hate shock marketing.
Urban Decay did the grungy/edgy/cool thing way before Kat von D. With taste and actual humor though. They stunned us back around 2000 with their edgy eyeshadows and cool names. I remember wanting everything
I was in the bloodsucking Advertising industry for 20 years. I was the one who would say, “Are we really calling this ‘Celebutard’?! That’s offensive.” And I was considered NOT a team player for it. I got fired from multiple jobs.
As a heavy metal Loving, tattoo and pierced Christian, I was taught to love all, regardless of sexuality, gender or views. And I do. The extreme Christian’s are so bizarre to me and spouting hate which goes against everything the bible stands for! So sad to see Kat following those people. Good job I never really got into her brand. I think I have a few liquid lips somewhere! Love you Robert!!! I now have my hubby watching you and James!! He thinks you are awesome too!!❤
They seem to forget Christ’s words and actions. He broke bread with the “sinners” and treated them as people. When asked what the 2 greatest commandments were Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. ' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbour as yourself. ' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Then when asked who is my neighbour he told the story of the Good Samaritan meaning everyone, including those we deem enemies, are our neighbours. We must come from a place of love (empathy, compassion, affording basic human decency) for everyone including ourselves. Personally, I’d rather stand before God at the end of my life and say, “I tried to live in love towards everyone because that’s what I believe you commanded” than to say, “I treated certain people with hatred, hateful rhetoric and disdain because they didn’t meet what I and certain others deemed to be proper based on what we believed you wanted despite Jesus telling us to love and showing us by example when he ate with (& hung out with) *gasp* a bunch of sinners and loose women. “ I am a preachers daughter and never grew up seeing or hearing the brand of Christianity that focuses more on hatred than on love nor have I ever preached that way after my ordination (though I had to stop due to chronic illness). My personal motto is “Love Always!” (meaning ‘Come from a place of compassion, empathy & treat everyone with basic human decency). P.S. I have 2 tattoos myself and am designing my 3rd I want to get.
“It’s just a lipstick, just change the name” exactly!!! I hate when people take the “it’s not that deep” stance. Like okay if it’s not a big deal why are you fighting to justify it? It clearly IS a big deal to you if you won’t take criticism
@@xamyx725wtf are you waffling about “recall, toss out, and remake new product”? ☠️☠️ they could just change the name on the website and then make new labels with the different name for the freshly made products. no company recalls and throws away a product because they changed the name of it, they pretty much only do that when there’s a safety issue with it lmao
About the names..i know Nars had an eyeshadow called "asphyxia" and all their "orgasm" and climax mascara and MAC had a lipgloss called "underage" and "barely legal" from Too Faced
Barely legal. Underage. That’s so bad. WHY??? Since when is sexual abuse cool? Maybe there are pedophiles infiltrating the system and try to change society to there advantage?
Fellow spoonie here. Ever since I started watching Robert I do my make-up every day, even if I'm not getting out of bed. It makes me feel better about myself. I hope you are doing well and being gentle with yourself ❤.
Hello fellow chronically ill person 😅 the Welsh brothers really are the most calming videos when you're not feeling well, I also recommend Ask A Mortician for fun history and morbid things, she has a very calming personality
@Ali_OT7 I am also chronically ill and have chronic pain. I feel so good about myself when I wear makeup, but struggle to find the motivation to do it everyday. Thank you for your inspiring comment. ❤
8:50 As a german i just wanted to state that the word "Selektion" really just translates to selection. A synonym would be "Auswahl" meaning something like "(something) to chose from". A native speaker wouldn't think that the meaning behind the name would be so horrible but just something like "choice" (as in: i choose this lipstick). But i can easily see how a non native speaker would associate this word with our horrible history, and given that this isn't a german brand and seeing the other names, it's just pretty horrifying to just see a product like this actually existing. National guilt is something very prominent here in germany and this product would be legally banned with such a message as everything with NS messaging is. (Exept of course for studying and teaching history so that something like what happened in the '30s and '40s may hopefully never happen again)
I died with the "Break the rules.... Of what?..... Advertising Guideline.". Ain't it so fitting for Mikayla to collaborate with the brand while she has her own ongoing controversies.
Her husband is a total garbage person as well. One of his bandmates groomed and sexually assaulted his teen daughter, and he said in an interview that his bandmate and daughter betrayed him! The daughter was a child, and is therefore a victim. His anger toward his daughter is horrible.
i feel like the daughter, regardless of age, would still be a victim, but more so a child (not trying to argue, children are more vulnerable of course.)
Pretty sure the daughter was 12 at the time. He said she betrayed him by “having sex” with his friend as if a 12 year old is able to consent and then essentially disowned her as a result. A child predator apologist is a child predator in disguise as far as I’m concerned and she’s knowingly fucking married to one. Vile humans all round, utterly shameful. And to marry and have children with a man who could treat children like that is dangerous and predatory in and of itself. She’s fucking trash
Great video Robert! I remember Kat and her husband being called out for dressing in Neo-nazi clothing and having links to that belief system too. The following of anti LGBTQIA+ creators too is just vile. No interest in following or supporting someone like that.
100% agree with you, well I think she has a certain predilection for the 3rd Reich... In Latin America her kind of christian conversion is called evangelista...they are very very very conservative and anti abortion, anti gays, numerous children aso.....by the way kvd and Sephora Mickayla copied a video done for a palette for a French guy called Richard 😮
I had a friend once pronounce it "macka-bree" and I almost fell out of my chair. It's mean to make fun of people's pronunciation, but she was a great friend and she took it well - but I laughed my ass off at that one. She also said "ar-chives" (like the herb chives) instead of archives, and that killed me too.
If you look up the definition of "macabre", you will find out the term originally derives from French. In French, the word "macabre" is pronounced exactly the way you deem it to be incorrect. So, I wouldn't consider it entirely wrong.
I'll admit I intentionally mispronounce that word. Everybtime I hear "macabre" I just think of a hillbilly cookout where big ol' uncle Bobby Joe went and got some corn on the cob only for his cheap paper plate to bend and the cobs to roll of into a dog pile. Horrified and upset, Uncle Bobby Joe drops to his knees and loudly laments "MUH COOOOOBBB!!!" As he shakes his fist at God for playing such cruel divine prank. That's all I think about when I hear that word. So I often intentionally mispronounce it. 😂
I feel like people think being edgy is permission to be inappropriate. There’s no reason why you cannot be edgy and still not compromise anyone’s safety, feelings, ethnicities and so on so forth. And i used to stand Kat Von D at their last years
I can't stand this woman, I never could. I like her look, love edgy make up and was totally into the aesthetic of her brand, but her personality just rubbed me the wrong way sooo intensely.
@@AvaAdore-wx5gg considering the people she chooses to follow on social media, i think she may have dug deeper into her wrong-doings. i wouldn't expect an apology from her any time soon.
I have never heard the full story of KVD so I am looking forward to this. Editing to add that I am SO tired of Mikayla. I don't trust her reviews at all.
Me neither! This was very interesting. I actually liked Kat minus the racism I didn’t know about. I could never stand Jeffery Star or Mikayla though. 🤢 I feel like those two were always dramatic in a negative way and Kat was just living her life as she wanted. Idk. (Once again, hard no to racism & homophobia!)
It may be breaking the advertising guidelines top put a deformed midget fraud to work in a public educational setting. Or if not that those vinyl boots are a crime for sure
Once they collaborated with Mikayla, that's how I knew KVD was dead and it's quite unfortunate because they could have easily recovered without Kat Von D if they had a better vision about their own brand
Being a goth kind of person, I absolutely LOVED the original lineup and the esthetic associated with it, especially the liquid lipsticks (the Lolita color is just very flattering on my skin tone, despite the name) and the tattoo eyeliner. That being said, I think Kat is a garbage human. I haven't purchased any of their products for 6-7 years.
I worked at Sephora when she got the boot - originally “KVD Vegan Beauty” stood for ‘Kindness, Vegan, Discovery Vegan Beauty’ but was changed again 4 months later😭😭🤣
Right?!? I’m neutral when it comes to Mikayla but the stylist for that video did her dirty. The boots looked like she was having a hard time to walk in. Just like she’s a beautiful person and the styling didn’t show that at all.
I bought their concealer brush and their Lock It foundation, but stopped after the Nazi controversy. Apparently, her boyfriend at the time had a huge throat tattoo with a swastika and even posed in a Nazi uniform for Halloween. That was enough for me.
The swastika is buddhist in origin. Lots of people have it (it is not turned the same way) and it doesn"t have anything to do with what the nazis made it to be.
You know they had sus tattoos when they have to black it out. Case in point is also Monami Frost she had a swastika tattoo and covered it with black ink. Surprise surprise Kat and her husband are doing the same…
Swasticas were originally positive symbols before they were tainted by (a certain period of time). Those meanings are more relevant in other areas of the world, and obviously not so much in the US. Sometimes you gotta remind yourself the world is bigger than you remember it is and things may not mean what we think they initially mean. I try not to get all jumpy over swasticas, some people mean more well than others - if I am making any sense here 👍🏻!
I remember my sister sent me that video of Kat Von D getting baptized for whatever reason and I was just like 1. I don't care and 2. She's still a horrible person now she's just hiding behind "faith" for being a bigot
People can change. I know someone who was a convicted criminal and he found religion and has totally turned his life around. He is nothing like he was before his conversion.
If murderers and addicts can change their lives around, so can KVD. Human beings do not stay the same as they grow up. Their beliefs and behaviors can change as they age.
@sassypanda5705 I agree with you that anyone can change their life around and try to do better. I would disagree with you in saying that getting batized is a way to improve ones self. Its just a ritual and maybe its symbolic to her but really she hasnt changed since being baptised. For one she is still married to a man that said his daughted who was s.a by HIS friend ruined his life. Also that person chose to put a big swastica on his neck (he claims its to reclaim it for buddist but hes also been racist in the past). She also is pretty much bringing mayhem to a small town in Indiana because they dont have very strict homeschool laws. She wants to homeschool which is normally fine and whatever but KDV never graduated highschool or finished getting a highschool equivilent. There is a reason our teachers get a 4 year degree afterall. She is also using some very sketchy homeschool material from IBLP that should make any real christian cringe and take it away. What KDV is looking for is a solution for her past traumas. She was a very young, beautiful tattoo artist in a time when it was dominated by masocist men and s.a was very common. She was like 22 when the camera was first pointed her way and she became famous. She had no support system behind her and not many people she could rely on to guide her through the fame. She was pretty much abandoned by her family and sent to one of those god forsaken wilderness schools that torture teenagers into becoming "behaved" (watch a video on Paris Hilton describing her experiences in one). While I think religion can be wonderful and healing, what she needs is THERAPY. Girl needs to seek help from a trained therapist that has a lot of experience with childhood traumal.
I NEVER liked KVD herself, but... the products used to be so, so good. The entire Shade & Light palette line was amazing. Her initial palettes were fantastic and had color stories no one else was doing. She started slipping with the Saint/Sinner palette and the fragrances, then she became more and more problematic than she already was, then Jeffree dragged her when he was still ultra-relevant, then the brand was sold, then there was the whole Good Apple mess... then Mikayla... it's so sad. Whoever was working on those palettes and products were amazing and I wish it could be recreated
Kat Von D becoming a Christian is definitely something my tumblr era self would have never seen coming 😅 i stopped following and supporting her during the antivax scandal so I had no idea wtf shes been up to since Love that you clarified atheist dont believe in satan either lol i just have to laugh when people assume atheism automatically means we worship satan 😂
Which is funny cuz to say you worship satan would mean …they would have to believe in god.. right? RIGHT? It’s also like being a Christian if you do something “questionable “ like listen to rap or metal they assume the devil has a hold on you you support the devil LIKE HUH?
KVD vegan beauty could have avoided a lot of problems if they just completely rebranded. Keeping the initials means they will always be associated with Kat Von D but I have an odd feeling that’s what they wanted
Hi dear Robert 🖤This will be very hard to watch...It was my favourite brand ever, but fell victim to an arrogant, hypocrite, highly problematic owner. It's now available in Finland, but too late. Most of those amazing, iconic products are gone (especially the Everlasting liquid lipsticks). However, I hope they will never ever discontinue the Shade&Light eyeshadow and contour palettes. Most companies should study the eyeshadow palette to learn about the difference between neutral, warm and cool before releasing a palette! My forever favourites🖤
It was my favorite too, at least in the beginning. I loved everything about it, especially the packaging, it was so "me." Now I wouldn't use it if you gave it to me.
Omg stop this was my favourite brand ever , got me through me teen years ( I had the worst acne ) was the only foundation to help cover everything bought for years
That as well known from the start, she has always been true to herself and represented herself authentically, she didn't change, unlike most people today who are not authentically anything, waiting for the majority to cast their vote then deciding who to become...so you probably stopped liking/purchasing from her when the mob put her on blast, came out with pitchforks ready and you didn't want to get called out for supporting an awful person, right?? She is the antithesis of a hypocrite, arrogant and problematic yes, from beginning to end, but never a hypocrite or meek obeyer, boowing to societal expectations and pressure 🤷🏼♀️
I was just in Sephora yesterday and my local Ulta. The KVD sections are extremely small now, with no new releases and empty spots of sold through product. I have a feeling in the next few months we are going to see KVD either shut down, or they are selling through old packaging to relaunch the brand. I hope if they do relaunch they go back to their roots of being alternative, edgy and over the top.
I dont normally comment but I just have to say, please don't stop making this kind of videos. I am not the type of person to closely follows every drama on the internet because it is very tiring to do so.. But i have to be honest I do love a good drama I just dont want to put the effort 😂 so having you explain everything and sum it up in one video is so amazing. I get crazy excited everytime!
I love your deep dives, Robert! I do think brand owners use attention seeking behavior to try and save their brand when it's on the way out. Her attitude and decisions are just revolting and she's never appealed to me. I'm with you on those shade names. I cannot understand any of that. It's not cute or edgy and seems to be just more attention seeking behavior issues. There's a reason she touched on all those historically horrific events. "Look at me! I'm am edgy artist expressing my creativity!" Stop it. People are just not that stupid. That classroom collab mess is just embarrassing. Anyway...love you, Robert! You've taught me so much with your content and I also adore the Welsh Twins content. I'm loving that dark eye look and the curlier hair you've been wearing! ❤
@DebbieTDP we know this. They're talking about when she was the face of the brand and the names of the products when she was the face/name of the brand.
As a university marketing major, yes, brands create opportunities for drama. While they may not outright lie for a controversy, they absolutely drop potential bait.
Apparently they bought the formula of the Marc Jacobs Beauty eyeliner for their KVD tattoo liners. I'm surprised that hasn't been shared more publicly as that formula was beloved by so many! (I think Kevin said this on the Beautiful and Bothered podcast)
Her everlasting lipstick in L.U.V (which was a striking purple/pink color) is what got me through radiation treatment for cancer. I wore it almost every day. The original formula needed only one or two coats and it lasted forever. The line tried to recreate it after she parted from the company but it’s just not the same.
I was obsessed with Kat Von D as a teenager. I loved her so much, her asthetic and makeup vibes was everything! So disappointing to see what ended up happening.. This brand will still always hold a special place in my heart, regardless of all the drama!
As controversial as “she” came across and BEFORE she sold the brand her makeup quality was INCREDIBLE and I never found another brand do the quality similar. As soon as she sold her brand I was actually sad 🥴 the quality wasn’t the same anymore
I agree... I am hoping they keep the setting powder the same. But everything else they changed and not for the better... still sad the brow pencil is discontinued. Such a great shape and shade range...
Right? I remember when they announced Kat wasn't the owner anymore, they swore in the replies they would never change formulas or discontinue products yet the only products that remain from the original line are the Shade+Light contour palette and the brow gels. However, they changed the formula and it's not good anymore, they did the same with the liquid lipsticks. Changed the packaging but said they'd keep the same formula but it's different!
i love these deep dives and this video was another really interesting one as well, but my favourite part of the video was the throwaway comment about people not being able to pronounce "macabre". don't ever change, robert. 💜
I've learned so much about the backgrounds of these companies from this series. It has certainly made me more thoughtful about who/what I support with my purchasing power. Keep up the great work!
I worked at a large Sephora when her brand launched and we had a meet and greet with her and our team. It was super early in the morning and our team was not allowed to bring in a coffee or even a bottle of water. Her team instructed us that no one can eat or drink anything in her presence because seeing others consume even water makes her violently ill.
WTF? I would become mysteriously "ill" myself, and not show up to that, no ma'am. How does she stand feeding her own baby if she can't watch people drink anything?
I was working for Sephora then too.( Still do) we didn't get any of that directive. It was a whole day in Chicago she spoke, played piano, showed tear jerker film and was really cool with us. I even had a smoke break with her...
@@sharimeline3077it's possible that she just learned to look away while feeding or figured out some other coping technique. She's a horrible person but that doesn't mean she can't actually have severe sensory issues as well
Frankly, I think it’s inherently impossible to have a truly “alt” brand while being, you know, *Sephora* . You literally cannot get more mainstream than one of the biggest makeup and cosmetics companies in the world. There *are* plenty of small, independent alt fashion and cosmetics brands out there, and yes, they do tend to be pricier, and you may have to pick and choose carefully for quality control, but at least those don’t have this overarching issue of “massive corporations only want to sell these products bc they think it’ll make them loads of money”.
Mainstream brand stuff is only as cheap as it is because they can mass-produce in bulk for less cost with their own factories, independent brands have to outsource, order only what they can sell and inspect the quality of their products. I follow the makeup producer Nekoyani and she shows her full process, mishaps and issues running her makeup business. Ironically, a lot of her items are cheaper and higher quality than places like Sephora (I promise I'm not being paid, I just really like her stuff) and I feel I can trust *some* smaller businesses to have good quality because that's what their future and earnings rely on.
I just see Mikayla popping in every controversial topic lately, and I'm so not into makeup i didn't even know about her until a month ago, I'm actually impressed
Lolita is one of the greatest ever written. Its an uncomfortable read, it makes you recoil. But as someone who spent later teen years groomed and abused when i read it i feel like someone like me is speaking.
I read in another comment that apparently Nabokov was SA'd as a child & used a lot of his writing to process trauma. Humbert Humbert [the unreliable narrator of Lolita] was modeled after his uncle - his abuser. It COULD be bullsh*t, but it makes sense how he could have such a keen eye for these creeps & how they work.
My problem was her attitude to her limited release palettes. I remember on her youtube channel, when she would announce a new palette she would always get mad at people for complaining about them being limited release. Implying that they were just lazy. I always hated that because not everyone is lazy, some people just couldn't afford it at that time. I also found it a bad business practice to have all the palettes limited edition and just have the shade and light one permanent. I get the idea of exclusivity and all that but she could have had a few more available. Like the pastel goth palette for example
I’m in Los Angeles, and all of her products were available for several months… The only product I never had the chance to try was the Shade + Light blush, but those were actually permanent, but recalled due to quality issues…
I'm loving you with your curly hair lately . It really suits you and looks good. I think a lot of brands create drama or scandal as it gets them attention and it's like free advertising .
People like her and js continue to prove that the offensive/provocative edgy persona to conservative/right-wing persona pipeline is very much a thing. I'm not surprised by her evolution at all 😆Also, that new ad was like secondary school level concept and production-wise. I wonder if they maxed out the budget using a bunch of influencers, because it is so bad! Lastly, I think brands absolutely do bad things on purpose because it's all PR at the end of the day, plus it often still attracts a lot of new customers...
The other “influencers” with Mikayla are actually followers of hers or at least smaller creators who were picked out. They probably paid them a lot less than Mikayla, though. But yeah, not the strongest concept for a campaign. They were definitely just riding on Mikayla’s notoriety.
What's weird to me is that the edgy/dark kind of people I have always known are just the opposite - very liberal, very loving and accepting as a whole. But for sure the influencers are going that route, straight to white nationalism. What a weird phenomenon. My real life experience doesn't match what I see in popular influencers. Not that my experience is universal, obviously something else is going on, but it's still sad to me because I thought people "like me" weren't evil nationalists.
I don’t know about js anymore. I haven’t heard any drama about him in like over a year. Dudes just off in the middle of nowhere living with his yaks. Lol.
i absolutely am living for the casual way you threw in that lesson on how to pronounce words correctly i love it....... you have made my whole week that much better thank you for your content
PSA: The word lolita isn´t always controversial it is used as a normal nickname in many countries, and there is a japanese street fashion called lolita fashion that is inspired by rococoo and victorian fashion and is very high femme with feminist roots, and doesn´t have anything to do with the book Lolita.
I'm still mad the rebranded KVD didn't rerelease the EXORCISM color in the liquid lipsticks. It was a beautiful cool toned deep berry color that was so perfect for people with cool skin tones. It was my go to everyday color. I stopped buying it after learning what a garbage person she was. After the rebrand and her removal I was excited to buy it again but they didn't include it in the relaunch. 😢
"I stoped buying after learning what a garbage person she was" ummm what, she was always like that, she didn't hide who she was or become someone different....so many people are saying that in the comments, I don't understand, if you knew who she was then you knew what she stood for, who she was, the things she said, for all her faults she was at least 100% genuine, authentically representing who she was and true to herself, more than I can say for most people today🤷🏼♀️
I definitely think that brands and people create drama or controversy for press. They go by bad press is still press but they forget that the consumer giving them money is watching them act without morals or empathy.
I gave her the benefit of doubt up until the anti vaxx comments. She gave convoluted explanations as to why she wasn't racist or antisemitic, and I stupidly believed her because I liked her brand so much and I thought maybe she was being set up and misunderstood. But the antivaxx thing was the last straw for me, she lost all credibility, even more for the gross stuff about her husband, whom she defended, that I learned about around the time. I had bought her gorgeous anniversary palette and returned it. Also, her excuse about not being racist is that she isn't white, she's latina. She was born in Tijuana to a Mexican mother... As a Mexican, I find it so daft. Like, racism is, to some extent, about people treating you according to how they clock you, and her being extremely light skinned, with her German name (her dad's German who migrated to Argentine and then to MX iirc), her perfect English and lack of fluency in Spanish... Well. Do with that what you will.
She’s very outspoken. Many people have an adversity to vaccines but don’t shout about it to everyone to bring on the hate. She seemed like someone who loves provoking and causing drama. Maybe she’s changed but in my experience people like that rarely do 🤷🏼♀️
Sounds very much like my experience. I drew the line with the anti-vaxx stuff, but looking back, I had already given her too much slack before that. I really wanted to think she was a good person. She's not.
I gave her the benefit of the doubt for so long purely because I loved her products. I was ride or die for the tattoo liner for a long time but yeah, the anti-vaxx stuff was the breaking point for me too. So sad to see Kendo running this brand into the ground instead of giving it the revival it deserves.
not so fun fact: the bad mustache man's followers that would've been charged with war crime often fled to argentina and south american countries to avoid jail as those countries didn't expedite them. so german hispanics whos grandparents spontaneously immigrated to south america with no ties in the 40s are most likely the descendants of n*zi :/
I love the original aesthetic of her brand, so goth and pretty. I only had the black 'Witches' lipstick and the design, applicator and product itself was awesome.
Even though larger, well-known brands may have decent products, I think smaller, lesser known brands tend to products that have more unique and higher quality products and smaller brands seem are surrounded by far less drama. I like discovering products from brands that are lesser known. And yes, I believe that brands do try to get attention by creating drama and at this point it just feels dishonest and exhausting.
honestly think its quite brave for posting this video so honestly talking about KVD , since you are apart of the pr list. so kudos to you! most people would never "talk bad" about a company they are in a decent relationship with. Loved this video ! and sidenote, personally ive loved kvd products, i think the formulas are great and i just love the packaging. i didnt really know anything about kat von d until this video so thank you for posting this!!! It really opened my eyes up, ive heard kat was problematic but never knew the full extent and wow am i shocked haha.
As a Christian and ally, with a daughter in the LGBTQ+ community, and with friends who are POC and adherents of various faiths, I find this woman very problematic. It's not for us to judge her relationship with God, or her actions in this life, but a sincere apology for the racist, ablest, and pandering product names and imagery would be good. I love your channel, Robert, and have the greatest respect for the honesty and clarity with which you share your skills and opinions.
Oh man, I lived through the entire rise and fall of KVD and all the controversies around it. I was balls-deep in the UA-cam beauty community when all of this was going down, especially the "drama" between JS and KVD. I will say, at the time, KVD was an absolute cultural juggernaut. I was genuinely sitting here in disbelief when you couldn't remember the name of Shade and Light because that was such a HUGE moment in the makeup world. I still have and use my Shade and Light eyeshadow palette (it hasn't gone off yet, so imma keep using it). Now, just to be clear, I do not support the KVD brand, and have not done so for years. However, I think she really did something big with Shade and Light. The packaging style and everything was touched on in the video, and that set her apart for sure, but I also want to talk about the products themselves. In a world full of Morphe 35 palettes where you were kind of stuck in a paradox of choice, Shade and Light was so refreshing BECAUSE it was so simple and user-friendly. There were three sections based on tone - neutral, cool, and warm. Within those sections you had logically and concisely laid-out colour stories, with the largest pan belonging to the overall transition shade, and three smaller pans dedicated to crease and highlight shades. The way they were laid out were like instructions in and of themselves. For someone like me, who was still learning a lot about makeup at the time, such a palette was a godsend. I feel like the next big KVD moment was the Cathedral palette (kind of a full-circle moment now). This palette was a thing of beauty. People have kept theirs, even if they can't or don't use them anymore, because it still makes such a gorgeous display piece. And then the inside was a dazzling array of colours, emulating the almost religious experience of beholding stained glass windows in old gothic churches. That was the thing with certain KVD products - they weren't just products, they were events, experiences. I know I sound absurdly reverent when I'm describing it just now, but that's kind of what it was like at the time when these releases came out. It wasn't just makeup, it was a cultural phenomenon. Then of course, she experienced her downfall due to the myriad issues to do with her as a person. I think I had already stopped buying KVD products by the time the antivax stuff came out, but that certainly would have been the last nail in the coffin. I somehow didn't even know about the cotton field thing until watching this video. Absolutely abhorrent behaviour...
This black eye look is stunning. It’s so saturated. Also, I use the shade and light eye palette nearly every time I use my makeup. But I bought it on sale right after the rebrand. It’s a great neutral palette though. Incredible formula. Just easy to use (Edited for spelling mistake)
I’ve personally been thinking about the KVD brand a lot. For me it has a lot of nostalgia and it made me feel like finally something different was happening in a time where makeup was more about “glamour”. I wish they would refresh the brand by taking inspo from indie alternative brands. Add duochromes, pastel palettes, intense colors. use crazy artwork, lots of color liners. Full range of foundation. They don’t need Mikayla, just get inspo from the current alternative world. An even better influencer would’ve been Bailey Sarian, someone who is edgy already
Honestly I feel like it’s so hard to find cool alt beauty brands now. KVD, Lime Crime and Jeffree Star were my life when I was a kid and all three of them are total garbage fires. What even is there these days like that?
Yes i think brands can use controversy as a sales technique. Look at P Louise's Cancelled collection, Shane and JS with their collab... Also the way you said "some cOntroVersIes" at the start.. Robert!! 😂 love the sass.
I was wearing KVD Lock it foundation about a decade until it was discontinued. I stayed out of drama especially relating to news and beauty and celebrities etc. I had no idea of the drama until this past year, when I started watching beauty UA-camrs. I was extremely hesitant to try any of their new foundations. Now using Urban Decay foundations. I have no desire to ever buy KVD products again. I used to love their Tattoo Pencil Eyeliner but it's horrible now. I guess I can use it if I'm in a black lip mood as a base that's about it. It's time for it to be laid to rest. I think we are all over it.
One of the major controversy as campaigns she did was when she released the Basket Case liner. She posed with Billie Joe Armstrong. They posed like Sid & Nancy. People were seriously unhappy with her, and felt she promoted domestic violence. Shame that I loved the formula for this & have never found a dupe.
Some people just want to be offended. I'm no Kat Von D apologist but I loved that campaign. Referencing both GreenDay and the Sex Pistols was totally the brand's aesthetic 🖤🖤🖤
I didn’t know about a lot of this because I was never a fan of hers so I ignored launches, but I audibly gasped at these product names/promo images. I’m retroactively horrified.
The things she said in Miami Ink, the lipsticks names, her husband, the fact that she went back to eating meat after years of being vegan and an activist against the meat and dairy industries... She has a list of issues that can be dated back to 2007
That was strange she stopped being vegan for a while because I remember Kat on twitter lashing out on people for eating meat and saying that people who eat meat are scums
In seriousness. People who got outraged about a lip product called Lola is a bit silly. There are many Lola’s in history. Soon nobody will be ever even blink or talk.
I remember wanting to get more from Kat Von D back in the day but being too broke for it. Now I'm glad I was too broke to buy from some of the more problematic brands back then and now I can make smarter choices in where I buy my makeup from. I also like that it's easier to find what used to be "alternative" colors for makeup so I don't need KVD or whatever it wants to call itself now.
Thank you for giving the backstory on these makeup brands! I prefer not to support brands that promote hate and follow sleazy business practices. (Now I have to find different liquid eyeliner. 😒)
Same! I watched all the deep dives and made sure it wasn’t covered yet. I literally was so excited when I saw this pop in my feed finally and was like 😮!!
I tried the Good Apple foundation and it was dreadful. I have dry skin and thought this would be a good choice. Thick, greasy feeling, reminded me of the makeup we used in drama class in high school. Couldn’t wait to take it off. Tried it a second time with a different primer and less product, but it was still a loser. I’ve kept it in my collection as a visible warning not to fall for hype. When something seems to good to be true, it probably isn’t. I really enjoy these in depth videos. Keep them coming!
I'm so glad u made this video because i was wonderful what was going on with the brand after I went to sephora the other day. Also, I remember Lolita being a hit and no one had a problem with the name at that time. A lot of these "issues" are more of a recent thing. And after influecers started taking over its kind of no wonder she jus decided to say F IT! And sell the brand. She ain't a sell out, I'll give her that!
Kvd everlasting liquid lipstick in crucifix used to be my absolute favorite. My lips r weird and just practically eat most other matte liquids, but these always worked real well for me personally. Was super bummed when I started paying attention and hearing about her BS she was getting on about.
"Once you learned about her bs and what she was on about" she was always like that, she didn't hide who she was or become someone different....so many people are saying that in the comments, I don't understand, if you knew who she was then you knew what she stood for, who she was, the things she said, for all her faults she was at least 100% genuine, authentically representing who she was and true to herself, more than I can say for most people today🤷🏼♀️
I used to love their liquid lips and I had the under-age red shade. I would cringe every time someone asked me what shade it was. But they've halved the number of shades they have and gotten rid of most of the "alternative" colours so it's more a basic pinks/reds/nudes. I won't be buying from them again unless something changes!
As a child SA survivor I now feel comfy to read lolita knowing this and being able to analyse in this manner. Thanku so much x

It is actually a popular trope in some films to have a goth girl become preppy, showing that she can become "pure" or "acceptable".
yes but she admitted to actively practicing witchcraft, not a "goth lifestyle"
@@AngelissimaASMRbut not all witchcraft is "bad" or "evil" or connected to "satan" in any way.
Heavy metal / goth Christian here! And agree. The way she’s turning her spiritual journey into a PR stunt is just… ick.
@@firelily77hows he confused. Care to explain?

(Exept of course for studying and teaching history so that something like what happened in the '30s and '40s may hopefully never happen again)
great, i think i just realized a band i like is sketchy.
I died with the "Break the rules.... Of what?..... Advertising Guideline.". Ain't it so fitting for Mikayla to collaborate with the brand while she has her own ongoing controversies.
I’m so happy others caught that I died-
Her husband is a total garbage person as well. One of his bandmates groomed and sexually assaulted his teen daughter, and he said in an interview that his bandmate and daughter betrayed him! The daughter was a child, and is therefore a victim. His anger toward his daughter is horrible.
Kat defended her husband for this too. Garbage couple.
Oh yeah i had forgotten about that. So fucked up.
i feel like the daughter, regardless of age, would still be a victim, but more so a child (not trying to argue, children are more vulnerable of course.)
She blocked me on IG for calling this out on a father days post 😂
I love that she was surprised about being harassed by hateful people when she constantly throws her hat in with them

I bought their concealer brush and their Lock It foundation, but stopped after the Nazi controversy. Apparently, her boyfriend at the time had a huge throat tattoo with a swastika and even posed in a Nazi uniform for Halloween. That was enough for me.
That's her husband, now.
It’s a shame the lipsticks were so good 😭
The swastika is buddhist in origin.
I thought it was a new video she was promoting when I saw it
If murderers and addicts can change their lives around, so can KVD.

Kat Von D becoming a Christian is definitely something my tumblr era self would have never seen coming 😅 i stopped following and supporting her during the antivax scandal so I had no idea wtf shes been up to since
Love that you clarified atheist dont believe in satan either lol i just have to laugh when people assume atheism automatically means we worship satan 😂
The owner isn't the owner since a long time.
Products are still great 😅
Omg stop this was my favourite brand ever , got me through me teen years ( I had the worst acne ) was the only foundation to help cover everything bought for years
@@alexandrad7896 it's not Kat Von D brand since 2020.
This video is a bit meh
"I have black bedsheets"
Then you pray to Satin.
See what I did?
I'm sorry I couldn't help myself
Hah good one!
Thank you so so much!
She hasn't been the owner since years 😅😂
@DebbieTDP we know this. They're talking about when she was the face of the brand and the names of the products when she was the face/name of the brand.
That advert with Mikayla literally looks like a GCSE media studies project.
I'm ded 💀 you're SO right loooooooool
This brand will still always hold a special place in my heart, regardless of all the drama!
her liner is one of the best, truly.
Say what you will about her as a person, but she really did pioneer alternative makeup into the mainstream market…
Kat Von D will always be the epitome of "not like other girls".
My exact thoughts.
But not in a good way!
I love this type of “makeup journalism” storytelling videos, keep them coming!
i love these deep dives and this video was another really interesting one as well, but my favourite part of the video was the throwaway comment about people not being able to pronounce "macabre". don't ever change, robert. 💜
I've learned so much about the backgrounds of these companies from this series. It has certainly made me more thoughtful about who/what I support with my purchasing power. Keep up the great work!
Me too! Most of them I knew a bit about but I had no clue about this brand beyond knowing who she was. But bloody Nora my eyes are opened!
How odd...
She's a horrible person but that doesn't mean she can't actually have severe sensory issues as well
WHAT THE HEELLL AAAH, some people need help urgently
Its called artificial scarcity and its fucking annoying. Happens in a lot of industries and I hate it.
Exactly this!
Lol.
@@sharimeline3077 That's been my experience too.
i absolutely am living for the casual way you threw in that lesson on how to pronounce words correctly i love it....... you have made my whole week that much better thank you for your content
PSA: The word lolita isn´t always controversial it is used as a normal nickname in many countries, and there is a japanese street fashion called lolita fashion that is inspired by rococoo and victorian fashion and is very high femme with feminist roots, and doesn´t have anything to do with the book Lolita.
Please. It totally does
Lolita fashion just happens to look like women dressed as little girls because of victorian clothes that looked nothing like that, sure
They discontinued the only creme contour shade that looked good on me in the rebrand too, so I have never quite forgiven them either 😂 x
It wasn't a removal 😅😂.she sold the company 😅
Right? That shade had me in a chokehold in high school! It was perfect as a performer. It showed beautifully, lasted, and complimented my skin
Same that was my go to color for years
"I stoped buying after learning what a garbage person she was" ummm what, she was always like that, she didn't hide who she was or become someone different....so many people are saying that in the comments, I don't understand, if you knew who she was then you knew what she stood for, who she was, the things she said, for all her faults she was at least 100% genuine, authentically representing who she was and true to herself, more than I can say for most people today🤷🏼♀️
That’s where the racism comes from - she is half naz1
not so fun fact: the bad mustache man's followers that would've been charged with war crime often fled to argentina and south american countries to avoid jail as those countries didn't expedite them. so german hispanics whos grandparents spontaneously immigrated to south america with no ties in the 40s are most likely the descendants of n*zi :/
I love the original aesthetic of her brand, so goth and pretty. I only had the black 'Witches' lipstick and the design, applicator and product itself was awesome.
i love this series ! the research robert puts in, and they way he presents it makes for a very enjoyable watch 🥰💜
Love this deep dive into a brand! That baptism video was on another level!!! And did laugh at the macabre comment. 😉
I love the deep dives you do! I hope you have a wonderful day!
Thank you so much! 🖤
This black eye look is stunning. It’s so saturated. Also, I use the shade and light eye palette nearly every time I use my makeup. But I bought it on sale right after the rebrand. It’s a great neutral palette though. Incredible formula. Just easy to use
(Edited for spelling mistake)
I’ve personally been thinking about the KVD brand a lot. For me it has a lot of nostalgia and it made me feel like finally something different was happening in a time where makeup was more about “glamour”. I wish they would refresh the brand by taking inspo from indie alternative brands. Add duochromes, pastel palettes, intense colors. use crazy artwork, lots of color liners. Full range of foundation. They don’t need Mikayla, just get inspo from the current alternative world. An even better influencer would’ve been Bailey Sarian, someone who is edgy already
Bailey has a collab coming out with Melt!
Honestly I feel like it’s so hard to find cool alt beauty brands now. KVD, Lime Crime and Jeffree Star were my life when I was a kid and all three of them are total garbage fires. What even is there these days like that?
@@bree8762curst kosmetics and Black Moon Cosmetics are amazing alt brands

Urban Decay keeps discontinuing their products, maybe find another brand
One of the major controversy as campaigns she did was when she released the Basket Case liner. She posed with Billie Joe Armstrong. They posed like Sid & Nancy. People were seriously unhappy with her, and felt she promoted domestic violence. Shame that I loved the formula for this & have never found a dupe.
I haven't used that one but have you tried Nabla Cupid's Arrow in black?
Pat McGrath does one
Some people just want to be offended. I'm no Kat Von D apologist but I loved that campaign. Referencing both GreenDay and the Sex Pistols was totally the brand's aesthetic 🖤🖤🖤

Have been waiting for this one…
The things she said in Miami Ink, the lipsticks names, her husband, the fact that she went back to eating meat after years of being vegan and an activist against the meat and dairy industries... She has a list of issues that can be dated back to 2007
She is constantly searching for something to latch onto, but none of it makes her happy.
That was strange she stopped being vegan for a while because I remember Kat on twitter lashing out on people for eating meat and saying that people who eat meat are scums
@keeperofthe7keys1987 Being vegan is not a cult, ffs.
In seriousness. People who got outraged about a lip product called Lola is a bit silly. There are many Lola’s in history. Soon nobody will be ever even blink or talk.
I absolutely love your deep dives. I learn something new every time. Thank you for such stellar content! ✨
Sunset makeup has a really great one. Also Araceli beauty but theirs dries out faster
NYX has a liquid eyeliner pen that's very similar!
I have been waiting for this 😅 I'm so excited 😁🖤

Unrelated to the brand but love that shirt Robert!
Thank you so much!! 🖤🖤🖤
These are some of my favorites from you Robert!♥️
Thank you! 🖤🖤 they are my favourite to make!
I love this! And your deep dives videos in general ❤ I think brands definitely use controversy to boost sales
