After talking in the last video about gear for winter, in this video we’re going to focus on how to prepare your EUC or PEV for the cold climate, so that you stay safe and still have fun! We are gonna look at topics such as tires, pedals, battery care, bearings and many more!

Very good video on Winter riding. The optimum temperature for our Lithium Ion Batteries is 15 to 35 degrees Celsius. These batteries produce electricity from a chemical reaction. This reaction is slower if the battery is cold, this has two main adverse side effects, it increases the internal resistance of the battery making it harder to discharge, and it will cause the formation of dentrites on the anodes of the battery during charging/ discharging, which reduces capacity (permanently), and can lead to failure (that's 0 C and lower). Batteries also have less capacity when cold 20% at 0 C as you indicated. I would not charge a wheel with batteries below 5 C.
Long term storage 40-60%. In which time some all of the batteries will have leaked away some of their charge. This process may well have have a bigger effect on some cells over others. If you were to then ride that wheel without first charging it to capacity and thereby leveling the batteries the danger is one on more cells will be reduced to zero. If that was to happen the other cells will attempt to reverse charge those cells as you ride the wheel which is instant death to your battery pack. The message after long lack of use, charge you wheel and level your batteries.
I have a 20L back pack cover for the master for if I get caught out in rain. Generally I try to avoid very wet conditions.
Suspension. Those slides and shocks. I wipe them over nearly every time I ride. I have some cycle dry lube to stop corrosion and keep the seals sweet.
Last but not least, if you do get your wheel wet, wipe it off when you get home and most importantly keep it upright.
cells operating temperature range is -10 to 40C according manufacturer, only charging them recommend in above 0C. When you use battery, they will heat up, and even in outside temperature -10, battery could be +5 on hard work.
as mentioned mostly we have wheels at home at room temperature and so if you drive it, the battery will heat and then it is about cooling vs heating but it doesnt mean that if there is ambient temp. 0 C I need to be slow. It could well be that if its 0 C and I am doing some uphill I will maintain the battery temperature above room level so the output is good.
@@milordas Batteries at -10C will be down as much as 30% capacity and significant discharge rates at these temperatures can lead to permanent loss of capacity. Charging at this temperature may generate dentrites which both reduce capacity and can lead to premature failure. The higher internal resistance of the cells at these temperatures will certainly warm them up but this is not the way to do it. Lithium Ion Batteries just do not perform well at low temperatures period.

Excellent battery advice for cold weather operations. It is preferable to never charge to 100% unless you are riding immediately after charging... and absolutely never charge to 100% if your initial ride is downhill, regardless of air temperature, where voltage "overhead" is necessary to store the regeneration capacity from the regen current. It will be interesting see the V13 battery temps coming from those that have extended use in snow.
I learned a lot; but tell me, do they put super capacitors between the motor and battery to absorb the regenerative braking energy and protect the cells?
