Mimics might just be the biggest stroke of genius I've ever seen in a video game. As a game designer, it lets you constantly re-use assets you've already created with an in-universe driven reason. As a player, we've been taught in 99% of the games we play to ignore the clutter in a room. But the genius of the mimics is that it takes a habit we've formed from other games an uses it against us. That's why I felt this was absolutely brilliant! You have to re-learn the way you think and develop a whole new set of habits. And unlike a lot of jumpscares in other games, the mimics stay fresh the WHOLE GAME. You never know exactly where they are, what they've become, and even when you have a psychoscope, you still can miss them. I ended up not enjoying the first hour or so of Prey, (until I finally got my hands on decent weapons and a few neuromods) at which point I enjoyed it immensely. I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys either Deus Ex: Human Revolution or Mankind Divided, or any Dishonored game. Once you get into a groove, it's hard to put down. I'd also add that the station itself was a much better playground then most games get to have. There were so many different subplots between the employees I learned about through e-mails, notes, (and even a hilarious glue sculpture) that really made Talos 1 feel alive and dead simultaneously. Instead of just random NPC's, there's an exact count of how many people are on the station at any given time, alive or dead, and you can track any of them down you want. And when you're also reading their e-mails, notes, computer logs, a videos, I couldn't help but feel the loss of these people in a way I usually don't for most NPC's in games. That's impressive. Definitely buy!
I'm not far in but the mimics haven't been too great in my opinion. There's been at least three in every room for me and they appear straight away even when I don't go near the objects
Another thing is the recycling system. If you can pick up an object, odds are you can recycle it for raw materials. So if you're low on metal, get a ton of trash cans and operator bodies, put them together and chuck a recycler grenade at them. Works well as a weapon too.
Those are not scripted, btw. Arkane said they created entire AI system that behaves on its own, with certain limits. That’s why you don’t see any objects smaller than coffee cups and no pens or pencils.
So I just watched the "10 things people should know before playing Prey" video, and at the end it says "We should have a Before You Buy soon." I click on the logo button to go back to the main screen, and the first thing I see is a Before You Buy on Prey. That's quite soon.
I go into a room see a mimic... shout out "I'm not locked in here with you... you're locked in here with me!!!" Mimic changes shape and hides I run out of the room

I love prey. It’s so atmospheric, and as a person who doesn’t get scared much, this game freaks me out sometimes. Real tense. I love the enemies and upgrades, there’s this element of misguided wandering and a clear goal all at once, sending you from one end of the space station to another. Amazing game.
For some reason, I LOVE the combat. Hitting with the wrench is so satisfying. My main, mostly used weapons are the disruptor stun gun and the wrench, along with the psychoshock and the phantom shift abilities. Wrenchy never disappointed me and will never do so in my future playthroughs.
Literally one of the scariest moments I've had about 14 hours in, was when I entered a new area and the nightmare typhoon was there. This was my first encounter with this thing and the game gave me the option to run or fight, I chose to run lol. I use the backlash ability and then absolutely leg it to a cabin I'd just found the key card for. I'm running and I don't hear any sounds or anything so I think I'm alright but then I turn around and HOLY FUCK ITS RIGHT INFRONT OF ME! So I just sat it the cabin until it went away hahaha
This is why I always harp on level design and atmosphere as being the single most important thing right behind actual game mechanic design. If your game plays great and has great mechanics but the world I'm playing in is contrived, boring, or otherwise lackluster, I'm not going to want to play. This is why I personally hated GTA IV after playing and loving San Andreas - GTA IV was just endless concrete and grey buildings (same reason I hate NYC in real life lol). This game sold me on it's environment within 5 minutes. Very well done atmosphere, not only actual construction but also vibe and lighting. Reminds me of perhaps my favorite game of all time - Metroid Prime.
It’s fucking broken. Fully upgraded shotty + 150% damage + an extra 250% sneak attack damage = zero challenging enemies. Combine that with stealth 3 and you can literally sprint behind enemies and one shot then in the back of the head.
Ther's a great sequence in a bar where you have to blast some music to get an audio sample. The noise attracts all the enemies in the are and hiding isn't really an option so you get this fantastic sequence of 60-90 seconds with balls-to-the-walls running and gunning with awesome pumped up music playing the background. It's particularly satisfying because, in most playstyles, your usual approach will involve picking your fights carefully and relying a lot on stealth. So this is just a little moment when the game goes 'hey, you know what? Let loose for a bit, have fun!'.
Cosmic W I wouldn't call it a secret when you encounter it during a side quest. I was already OP by that point in the game but I did appreciate the upgraded stats.
Rares Macovei yeah I was surprised how quick you can become OP in this game lol. As soon as you get Psychoshock or whatever it’s called and an upgraded shotgun with a shit ton of ammo encounters become cake wakes. I mean you can still counter certain enemies with different weapons but shotguns never gonna let you down.
I played the demo and loved it so much, because it many things can really hit the level of unease that Prey does so well. I find that general unexpected encounters with Phantoms really get me though, or hearing them behind me as I hurriedly sprint away with the resources I needed.
Game is amazing I love how even on the normal mode the game is a challenge and not because it's hard but because it makes you think outside of your normal fps to kill enemies really is a unique and much needed game for this generation
I bought this about six months ago. Reminded me of half life and system shock for sure. For some reason I put it down and left it for months. Just picked it up again and haven't been able to put it down. Thoroughly enjoying figuring everything out, Discovering the fate of the workers and learning the weak points of the enemies and exploiting them. I'm finding it to be an engrossing, challenging and enjoyable experience. 5/7 couldn't be better
Swear to god I never got so freaking scared of everyday furniture in my entire life until I started playing this. Hell I don't even trust this chair I'm sitting on right now. ... Brb, getting my spanner.
From my experience, while I found myself thinking of Bioshock frequently, this game gave me a MUCH different feel. for me, this seems like a fantastic spiritual successor to bioshock. Combat feels remarkably familiar, but the plethora of creative solutions are implemented in such a way that non violence seems more like an accomplishment than a convenience. Even the awkward combat has its rewards, because we're not marines, Morgan is a scientist, and while this may not scratch the fps itch you may expect, it feels really natural for those of us who are less ballistically inclined, and it encourages a different playstyle that is unique in recent years.
Finished this game after playing for 24 hours almost straight. My opinion: This game is HARD. and i mean hard. And STRESSFUL. This game will make your heart race around every corner, and as you progress enemies get EVEN harder. Then once you finish the game you don't want to play it fir another month or so. Overall very fun though!
SylentSpecter For me it's the other way around. The game is brutally hard at first, but once you get some upgrades (I finished the game once so far with human upgrades and only the Mimic Cup ability) and by the first third/half-way point I was steamrolling through everything, even more so once you learn everythings weakness. This on Normal. Started it again on Very High with the Modifiers, now that I knew how to play, everything was much easier than my first time on normal, lol.
Miki Miki and rightfully so , this game is literally mediocre, had the worst time playing the demo and im someone who actually bought nier automata just cuz I randomly played its demo not knowing shit about it cuz it impressed me so much , this game is slow , with uninspired enemy designs , unnecessarily loud and annoying music that keeps playing even when you kill the little shits , the ui was crappy too and the graphics are pretty bad for current gen
Ali Hamza Why is everyone bitching about the graphics? It looks great, it's a more detailed, refined look of dishonored's art style. The exaggeration of the models gives it it's own unique look. Second, like they said in the video, after the section the demo covers the game really opens up and becomes so much more. The music bug is also fixed in the full game. Third, enemy design is subjective but I love how they look, fluid, formless, unknown, the way lights flicker as phantoms walk by them, it all adds to their design. The combat has it's faults but it works well. All in all this game is a 9 at minimum, it's engrossing in the extreme and by far my favorite game of 2017 so far.
A lot of people complain about the weapons being underwhelming, but it’s kind of the point. You aren’t meant to run around gunning everything down. Combat is more about planning your approach to the fight more than anything. Everything down to the toy crossbow is a valuable asset to your arsenal. For example: the toy crossbow is the cheapest way to deal with cystoids if you don’t have a box to chuck at em. I think what turns people off from Prey is just how creative you can get with it’s mechanics. Not a lot of games are designed with that flexibility in mind so the concept of Prey is quite alien to most. For the players who thrive in this kind of mechanical environment, Prey is an easy game even at the hardest difficulties. For players who are used to more structured gameplay mechanics/simpler mechanics, frustration awaits them. errrr... In my opinion
The first tourist room. You smack the fire alarm a few times and it opens up for four free neuromods. Neuromods are hidden everywhere. It's pretty fun when you get the recipe to make them haha.
They're called Etheric Phantoms, they teleport more often the normal versions...! I hate those bastards, too, when they spot you. Evading from them is a BIG pain in the ass, they let you waste your sprint stamina faster than you normally breathe!
Agreed, they are a pain, even in the endgame. Try and sneak past them if you can until you can find a certain weapon in the lobby that will increase your chances in direct combat SIGNIFICANTLY.
Put a point in leverage and chuck explosive canisters at them at the beginning. When you get the wrench knockdown godmod for your suit, just surprise buttseks them from behind with a heavy attack(sneakspeed+ recommended) and start wailing on them. When they happen to see you, i tend to unload my shotgun at it's face, but that's always a waste of resources. That enemy alone made me worship the psi-block grenades!
hahaha yeah those phantoms are a fucking pain in the ass, but once you have invested on stealth, critical damage and weapon upgrade with shotgun, you can pretty much 1 shot these buggers and it's oh soo satisfying
Another game that is utterly underrated. Arkane did such a fantastic job with this. I honestly believe this is the best game they've ever produced. Its smooth, no glitches. And saying the combat is flexible is an understatement. I hope Arkane go back to these roots one day. We need more games in this genre...
I've been waiting for this Before you Buy! I'm excited to play the demo. The scare factor in this game makes it sound even more fun than I originally thought it would be.
Loving it so far, and I've only found a few neuromods. After getting killed by a coffee cup, in every new area I encounter I find myself suspicious of every seemingly innocent-looking object. It took all I had to bring down the first phantom I encountered, so imagine my dread when watching this video where the scene has two atta time with addition mimics to contend with. I love how you come around a corner and see something move, you don't quite see where it went or what it morphed into, but you know something's about to jump out at you!
2020: Spent the last 15 years playing hundreds, if not thousands of video games. This is STILL in my top 5 personal favourites since 2017! It is exceptionally brilliant! :)
@@MysticBearKnight have you tried the dlc? I’ve heard some people say it’s great and some hate it. I’m on gamepass so I don’t own the main game, so I was thinking of buying the deluxe version that comes with DLC just to show Arkane some love and to support the game that I’ve become obsessed with, even though I know they’re owned by Microsoft and probably don’t need the money. Or I could just buy the dlc but it’s almost the same price as the deluxe version. If it’s anything like the main game I’m sure I’ll love it. Just wondering what you thought? Edit; the dlc I’m talking about is called Mooncrash, I’m not sure if there is other dlc, but this is the one I was thinking of getting.
@@Huss_D I’ve not played it myself, but from what I’ve heard, it’s quite good and has a lot of replayability. I’d say purchase it if you can find it for cheap, or when it’s on sale. I recommend you watch Worthabuy’s video on it, he explains it well. Hope this helps! :)
This game was so engaging, especially in replay. Also it does a great job of balancing the enemy, the weapons are basically useless on their own and you find yourself trying to find somewhere to hide. My first encounter with the nightmare was as I entered a new area it let out that Whooomp noise. The Nightmare is hunting you and I took off running and just hid. Of course later you get more powerful and you can hunt the nightmare. And the DLC was such a novel expansion on the game.
An "OH SHIT!" Moment for me, when i was in the lobby after i watched the second part of my video to myself. The higher level typhon spotted me from across the lobby. Then in a split second it zoomed over to me, swiped and throw me into the air as my critical health warning was blaring! I jumped higher than i have in a long time. Simply because i wasnt expecting it! This is a beautiful game. Where the story picks up and dives deep within a few hours. The fact that you dont have a ton of materials, deciding what to craft and where to put your nurostims all the more crucial. This game deserves way more praise then it got. A true gem in a haystack!
Good review as always. I personally love the homage to bioshock. It's a really fun survival horror too. Agree the gameplay sometimes feels "clunky" but the powers work really well. That nightmare scared tf outta me when I first came across it lol.
Just finished this game last night. Loved every bit of it! I beat it in around 26 hours, but I looked at EVERYTHING. I'm that guy that has to look around every nook and cranny to see if something is lurkin', haha! Arkane definitely delivered in that regard since there's just so much to read and discover. The world building aspect of games like System Shock, Deus Ex, and Bioshock have always been the biggest appeal to me so I'm glad Prey followed in their footsteps. I'd love to see more games like this. It's pretty much the only kind of single player game I'm into these days.
I suck at video games so I watch my brother play them. He recently played Bioshock for me to watch (he originally played it when it game out), I loved it! I am currently watching him play Prey and... it is ok, I am enjoying it enough to keep watching but I am not loving it as much as I did Bioshock or Uncharted 4. We'll see how I feel about it by the end.
This game always gives you freedom in how you solve a situation. It never asks "is running around like doomguy with the shotgun acceptable?" It just lets you do it.
I always look for your reviews. They get to the point without dragging on like some other reviews. Thank you for your time and hard work. Also, I think you and Falcon have some of the best voices for youtube. Keep up the great work!
I hadn't played a good game in full for a long time and I wanted to get back into it. I was a big fan of the Alien movies and i think the game i played before was starwars the fallen order and played some Assassins Creed. all on xbox. and so i was like im gunna commit to playing this game. head phones on, give it a real go. and to be honest it blew me away. one of the best games i've ever played hands down. it was everything i was looking for, sci-fi dark mystery vibe. got me using my bain and became invested in seeing it through. people who know know, what should i do with Talos and the information you find out. what happened to eveyone and should you trust Alex. it was a freaky cool experience and i definitely felt like i had just completed something epic. highly recommend, but you have to be in the vibe for the mystery eeriness horror
What an underrated gem. This, along with the Deus Ex series, are amongst my favorite immersive sims. Miss the old days, studios just don't make good immersive sims anymore...
I bought this game a few weeks ago (haven't got around to playing it yet) and just now saw your video, love the way you describe the game and add your personal views on it. Now I'm glad I bought it and excited to start my journey with it!! Thanks for the video!
Prey is easily one of the most underrated games of 2017. The game is just pure fun, it’s enjoyable. The story is entertaining. The enemies are actually innovative and creative. I remember shitting myself in the first 30 minutes of the game because these mimics kept shifting into objects around you. The atmosphere is great. It kept me entertained that’s for sure. Don’t know why it’s selling for such a low price now...
Itachi2099 I really don't think the demo is a good metric to judge whether you'll get into the game because the vast majority of people who ended up liking it say that it didn't really grab them until after the point where the demo ends. Now, that being said, if you're on a tight budget wanting the most for your money then a 15-hour single player game is probably not the best use of your funds, especially given the great longer games which have already come out this year.
I played 2 hours so far. Still not sure if I’ll like it or not. Feels like a first person metroidvania styled game (which are always hit and miss with me). I’m an OCD gamer so I make sure to check every room for everything. Gets annoying sometimes. Haven’t experienced too much combat yet (other than hitting mimics with my wrench). Didn’t upgrade much yet. I find the story very intriguing so far. It may end up being a 10/10 game for me. We shall see! I feel as if I’m gonna be hard to please after just beating The Witcher 3.
This game is absolutely fantastic for me so far, except Rani!! Every time I walk into the Aboretum mimics spawn and seem to kill her, although I haven't seen a dead body yet. But the heart warming feeling of lullabying people to unconsciousness with a tesla coil gun then later seeing a green safe next to their name in the security computer is amazing and oddly rewarding.
cheese burger it's kinda a reboot but Arcane (or Arkane) stated that it has nothing to do with the first one and the concept and story are way different. So technically it is original...
This game is literally Bioshock in space.. It's absolutely incredible. I love reading the emails and finding all the secrets. The atmosphere is spot on too. I have also not had a single technical problem (playing on PS4 Pro) If you like Bioshock, System Shock, Dishonored or Half Life then give this a chance if you're on the fence, trust me
I always look forward to the before you buy videos. Mainly I'm already playing the games you guys discuss. Your opinions are always spot on with mine and it's why I love your channel so much. Keep up the good work guys.
I've put in 3 hours into Prey so far and I'm loving it. It's really refreshing in this day and age of watered down game mechanics to get a Bioshock in space that doesn't hold your hand - similar to the way Half Life was. It just kinda says, "hey here's the world, go get em tiger"; and rewards you for thinking outside the box. Take your time, look around every corner, use your brain. If you see something that doesn't seem quite "right", it's probably not, it's probably a mimic. Those little buggers aren't that tough in 1v1, but they can be dastardly in the way they blend in and straight up deadly if they outnumber you. The game is basically they took Half Life, Deus Ex, Dishonored and Bioshock, put them all in a blender, poured them out onto a cookie sheet and baked at 400 degrees for 45 minutes. It very much feels like Rapture in space, with multiple paths and ways to do things (like Dishonored) with perks (like Deus Ex) built in a Half-Life esq shooter.
I used all my materials and weapons so sparingly that I had over 100 of each material, 50 medkits, 70 something psi’s, and hundreds of each kind of ammo except for the shotgun which was at about 120. Needless to say, using the wrench as often as I did made it a bit difficult until I realized I was nearing the end and could actually use stuff whenever I felt like it. Pretty good game tho

"Its basically Rapture in space.." This is a bold statement i hope its true. Hard to recreate the feeling of exploring Rapture for the first time.
hmmm
I’m watching this because I’m playing Bioshock at the moment and it reminded me of Prey. Let me tell you Rapture is LEVELS above the world in prey.
@@Alex-gf4iu true; I wish Prey had more true diversity in levels.
Bethesda and Arcane have just made 42 Great British pounds thanks to Jake Baldino.
Surprisingly enough, even this comment of yours got 42 likes!

This would make a great movie, watching the main character transform and everything
You mean like District 9?

One of the most underrated games out there. Just push through those first 2 slow hours. And it gets way better
Reminds me of perhaps my favorite game of all time - Metroid Prime.
godlyMike127 Metroid prime is my shit
I agree on the Metroid Prine vibe!
I personally love this game and it’s trippy ending. The design of every important aspect is creative.
Metroid Prime is the motherfucking best. Blew my lil teenager mind to shreds when it came out.
Even years later I’m still playing this game. Love it!!! One of my top favorite games
Great Vid. I would add, the Shotgun has a super nice feel to me. Ripping apart a Phantom with that is really satisfying.
Preys shotty is my favorite in every game.
It’s fucking broken. Fully upgraded shotty + 150% damage + an extra 250% sneak attack damage = zero challenging enemies. Combine that with stealth 3 and you can literally sprint behind enemies and one shot then in the back of the head.
I also like gluing phantoms then using psionic blast or whatever. Always one shots phantoms, as long as they're a type that can be glued
Me: Buys game
Also Me: watches this video after buying xD
Yeah I always do that when I wait for the game to download lol
Dennis Reynolds lmao yep same here
@@MrCholoPants3415 I'm literally doing this right now xD
I wasn't really sure on buying this one while watching this video.
Then you said it has cool 80's synth music.
Now I've gotta buy.
I love the game and also theres a secret golden pistol in the game
xLMx GamingZ
I found a secret?
I found it to!
And a shot gun
Cosmic W I wouldn't call it a secret when you encounter it during a side quest. I was already OP by that point in the game but I did appreciate the upgraded stats.
Rares Macovei yeah I was surprised how quick you can become OP in this game lol. As soon as you get Psychoshock or whatever it’s called and an upgraded shotgun with a shit ton of ammo encounters become cake wakes. I mean you can still counter certain enemies with different weapons but shotguns never gonna let you down.
i thougt it is a Horror game, but its prop Hunt with shooter
Sometimes it's pretty freaky.
welp, kelp. This was clearly a joke...
welp, kelp. Wth are you getting paid?
Woah... they revamped cod prop hunt?
It’s more than that......that’s like the first 30mins only
I played the demo and loved it so much, because it many things can really hit the level of unease that Prey does so well.
Calibrating the touch screen on that guys Looking Glass room got me. Was not expecting that.
Finished this game after playing for 24 hours almost straight. My opinion:
This game is HARD. and i mean hard. And STRESSFUL. This game will make your heart race around every corner, and as you progress enemies get EVEN harder. Then once you finish the game you don't want to play it fir another month or so. Overall very fun though!
Game is not that that hard once you realize how to deal with each enemy type.
theripper121 I agree once you get that shotgun it's a breeze
SylentSpecter For me it's the other way around. The game is brutally hard at first, but once you get some upgrades (I finished the game once so far with human upgrades and only the Mimic Cup ability) and by the first third/half-way point I was steamrolling through everything, even more so once you learn everythings weakness. This on Normal. Started it again on Very High with the Modifiers, now that I knew how to play, everything was much easier than my first time on normal, lol.
@@JACrissGyal the shotgun is asscheeks, pistol with Critical chipsets is the way to go.

I know Angry Joe will make fun of all 9.5 9.0 scores from critics in his review
i just hope he is reviewing it cuz he hasent started playing it yet as far as i know
Miki Miki and rightfully so , this game is literally mediocre, had the worst time playing the demo and im someone who actually bought nier automata just cuz I randomly played its demo not knowing shit about it cuz it impressed me so much , this game is slow , with uninspired enemy designs , unnecessarily loud and annoying music that keeps playing even when you kill the little shits , the ui was crappy too and the graphics are pretty bad for current gen
Lazy Jew promiesd review of Total Warhammer at the last summer though..
Angry joe is annoying af
2:21 "Prey really shines in its level design"
*Background AI start glitching* lol
docmass15 Those enemies are supposed to glitch lol.
The first tourist room. You smack the fire alarm a few times and it opens up for four free neuromods.
Neuromods are hidden everywhere. It's pretty fun when you get the recipe to make them haha.
I'm struggling with it. Hard as hell on normal. them purple phantoms are whooping my ass
That enemy alone made me worship the psi-block grenades!
hahaha yeah those phantoms are a fucking pain in the ass, but once you have invested on stealth, critical damage and weapon upgrade with shotgun, you can pretty much 1 shot these buggers and it's oh soo satisfying
whatever, you get what i'm talking about
Another game that is utterly underrated.
Most scary moment is in the lift when the light goes off and a phantom stares you in the eyes...
Well this is one of my most anticipated of this year!

@@MysticBearKnight thanks mate😊
Love your vids Gameranx, Keep It Up :D !!!!
Good review as always. I personally love the homage to bioshock. It's a really fun survival horror too. Agree the gameplay sometimes feels "clunky" but the powers work really well. That nightmare scared tf outta me when I first came across it lol.
Prey is free on Epic Games now go get it before its too late.
I love the way you guys review games, i trust your opinion every time i buy a game and you guys have not let me down so far.
I'm glad they released a demo because I don't think I would've gotten it if there wasn't one.

that touch screen jump scare you showed at the end had me shitting my pants when I played through it.

I'm a guy with a very low budget trying to use every penny as wisely as possible, do you recommend I get this game?
Zach Zach game is worth it
+SlayBells Why not? And what game should I get?
SlayBells lol right. Buy *Destiny 2* but dont buy this game.
LOL
Zach Zach play the beginning hour demo and see if you'll get into it. I didn't, i found the game boring and clunky.
I feel as if I’m gonna be hard to please after just beating The Witcher 3.
how is it now
Ak47 a solid 8/10. I recommend it!
I hated this game at first but after 3 hours in I'm hooked. I wish this game had more enemy types and iron sights.
Oh just you wait until you meet the 'Paths...
Vikings426 that was the same with me, played for few hours. Left it for months, picked it up last week and beat the game just now!
Games don't need iron sights to be good.
Take half life, system shock, quake, doom, and counter strike for example.
I prefer it without iron sights I think iron sights would ruin the horror feel more if you can aim better
That bit at the end of your video with the touch screen. Terrifying! Made me jump out of my skin.

I'll have to play this summer, but after Nioh and Nier.
Damn, i really need to get back to Nier, too many good games right now.
Same. I started it and got like halfway through then stopped to play other titles. And now with steam sale, I have like 17 more games.
I get alot of Bioshock Dishonred Half-Life and some elder scrolls references.
I came back up to the lobby to find the friendly neighborhood nightmare waiting for me.
