I have absolutely no interest in horse racing, but at least once a year I return to watch all Secretariat's triple crown winning races, and I cry every time lol. Each race has a teachable lesson. This race taught me to continue to push yourself every day to be better than the one prior, just like when he continued to push himself to run faster every quarter mile. The Belmont taught me even though you're succeeding or even the best at your craft there's always room to grow and to not plateau just like when he won by 31 lengths when he easily could have slowed up. The Preakness taught me to never give up on a goal you have even if may seem daunting, just like when he went from last to first within the initial turn.
A horse like Secretariat does not require a second-rate musical score laid over the video. Secretariat is the drama and the emotion.

Still gives me chills and tears everytime I watch the 3 races by this one of a kind magnificent horse called Secretariat.

It was a privilege to watch Big Red run. He’s what got me in to horse racing. Simply the best of all time. Numbers don’t lie. For no one to beat any of his Triple Crown times after 50 yrs is truly incredible.
Whaqt you are watching is perfection. We don't see it often. That beautiful horse is perfection in many ways. Looks, beauty, grace and speed.
Secretariat ran each 1/4 mile faster than the one before it. This means he was accelerating throughout this entire race. This is the greatest horse that ever lived, right here. He destroyed sham, a horse who would have been a triple crown winner in almost every other year. There are no superlatives for secretariat.

Before the Preakness they mention that Sham had two teeth knocked out in the Derby it had to be one hell of a blow but they continue to race him I'm not shure that would happen today almost seems like abuse 🏇
I watched a program interviewing the vet who did Secretariat's autopsy. He said he had a perfect huge heart weighing 22 pounds. The average thoroughbred has a heart that weighs 8.5 pounds. Sham's heart weighed 19 pounds. They definitely had a genetic advantage. They were truly gifts from God.❤
I remember watching this race with my "big" sister. She rode horses and was in love with horses. She is 68 and has owned several horses. I still get goosebumps today as Big Red roared from the back and was stretching the lead going awaaaay.

How did Sham get two teeth knocked out in this race I've watched it many times and don't see how this could have happened it had to be one hell of a blow . They mentioned it before the Preakness.

50 years later I had to watch this again. Today Mage won the 149th Kentucky Derby. Secretariat record still stands. And let me just say...Sham was a great horse too.
Mage won in 201.57 while Secretariat's record time was 159.40. The difference of 2.17 seconds is a large distance when you consider that those horses are running nearly 40 mph. I am waiting for the day that some horse runs faster than Secretariat. I've been waiting 50 years and I don't see it happening any time soon.

At around 2:03 after turcott hits him the second time and red straightens out in the stretch if you look closely you can see his front legs kick forward and go into another gear that no other horse has. Its incredible to watch.

Secretariat is in my opinion the greatest race horse that ever lived. I say this as an Australian and we ourselves have had some mighty horses including Winx who won a world record of 25 group one races but unfortunately was never tested overseas. Our greatest race which is also known as ‘The race that stops the nation’ is the Melbourne Cup and it has been run since 1861. Kingston Rule a son of Secretariat won the 1990 edition of the race in 3:16 over the 3200 meters or just under 2 miles. This record still stands today as does the record of his trainer the late Bart Cummings (Rest In Peace) who in his career as a trainer won 12 Melbourne Cups. Just thought I would share that with you that even all this far away Secretariat still has left his mark on our greatest race even after all these years. I keep watching this. Theres something almost spiritual about this beautiful and unique horse.
Its amazing how he was dead last coming in front of the stands the first time and then starts picking off horses. He was running 6th when getchy green and sham hooked up and was running together and he still caught them and past both of them them. Incredible.

Secretariat was last at the start of the race. Look how much ground he made up, and how quickly he did it.
I watch this race every year as one of my "Derby preps". It never gets old. 50 years and his records still stand.
Fifty years later and he’s still the greatest. Today’s race horses are not the same breed. They are an extremely in-bred, watered down version of what once was.

Just reading the book "The Turcottes" by Curtis Stock. These boys were raised near my hometown. I went to school with Yves the youngest. What an amazing story! And yes, Secretariat was one of a kind. He and Ron sure made a great team.

Just for accuracy’s sake: 2 horses to-date have also run it under 2 minutes: Sham and Monarchos, who was 2001’s winner.
Secretariat’s time of 1:59 2/5 still stands after the 2022 derby, 49 years and still counting!
Look at the distance Rich Strike had to cover from the 21 gate and he was just three seconds off the record. Indeed, the start of the 2022 Derby is as incredible as the finish.
@@rokyericksonroks I’m not taking anything away from Rich Strike it was a great race by his team winning, 3 seconds isn’t as close as it sounds. 1 second is about 5 lengths of a horse so that puts him about 15 lengths behind Secretariat’s time and a length of a horse is about 8 feet they have it figured to be so doing the math it’s about 120 feet Rich Strike would have been behind Secretariat. 3 seconds in horse race is really quite long in distance. Rich Strike ran a great race and it’s a great feel good story and I couldn’t be happier for that team for winning!

Indeed, legendary in his own right. Believe in my heart they weren’t rivals, they were family after all.
The greatest of all time.
The length of his stride in the stretch run is noticeably much larger than Sham's or anyone else. He can flatten out like no other Thoroughbred and pushed the pace every furlong.When he started past the field it was only 15 second till he was clear and up front with Sham. Never be another Secretariat.
Poor sham, he's probably the greatest runner up of all time he's probably the second greatest horse of all time he ran the derby in under 2 minutes to would have easily won the triple crown
People keep saying Sham would have won it all if not for Secretariat, but don’t forget that Sham broke down in the Belmont. I think Secretariat would have run him into the ground anyway but he started dropping off very quickly not much past the 3/4 pole. He was diagnosed with a fractured cannon bone and never raced again.

Fifty years ago in a few days…..Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby in record time…that still stands today…50 years later. The only horse to ever come close to his time was the great Monarchos.

His horse heart was 20 pounds! And the normal thorough bread heart is around 7-8 pounds!

@@laurenurban3942Secretariat’s heart was estimated by the necropsy veterinarian to be 21-22 lbs. It wasn’t weighed. The same veterinarian happened to perform Sham’s necropsy. In that instance, the heart was weighed & it was 18 lbs.

I say this in the nicest way, but the music on this is very distracting and irritating. The drama comes from the call of the race. It doesn't need any music.

Secretariat passed in the outside, rich strike on the inside. Secretariat did it the long way and still holds the record.
