The old man and the sea was with Spencer Tracy, not Gary Cooper. This would have been an easy thing to check. Cooper's movies from that year were 10 North Frederick and Man of the West. I just happened to watch both of those again in the last year (I was quite young first time around), though I distinctly remember The Old Man and the Sea, because as a child I hated that movie and haven't seen it since.
