Wow... I've been woodworking for 50 years and never knew I had to have these five items before I could do quality woodworking. Thank you so much... you've saved my life.
The hole saw sticks and burns the wood because there's nowhere for the sawdust to go so it instantly fills up the gullets of the saw. There's a way around this, touch the hole saw lightly to the surface to mark the circle and then drill a 8 or 10mm hole or two inside it, just touching the mark left by the hole saw. Now the chips will clear through the holes and not jam the saw giving a much smoother, faster and more pleasant cut with no binding or burning. But yes, for small holes, say less than an inch (or 25mm for us metric folks) a forstner bit is the way to go. But good luck finding a 50 or 75 or 125 mm forstner bit.
Bought the gripper right after I returned from the ER after cutting off a knuckle and mangling another finger about 18 months ago. Makes it a lot safer. Going in next week for another surgery to fix the fingers . Get one!

My grandpa didn't need a CNC to make beautiful stuff that still exists. I have mixed feelings about mass production devices. Yes, it takes some kind of skill to set it up, but it is not custom woodworking in my opinion. I'm glad you're making money and they are your sponsor; but, for us traditional working stiffs, it is not feasible.
I fitted a digital readout to my router- they are really cheap. Zero it when you change the bit, and then you can set it to any height- 0.01mm resolution with mine (but you can switch to thou if you must.) Way more accurate.
That's a good video and all good reccomendations. But I do not have to consider Woodpecker products, as I do not measure to 64ths??? Who does that. Thanks
You'll have to do that for a particular build. Say you are making a cabinet that has to fit within that type of perimeter. Although, in that case... maybe better to make some story sticks so your measurements would be exact every time. There are different methods. Choose the one that best suits you.
Coming from working on industrial panel saws, with 400mm blades, we were taught to use two long push sticks, for small ripping cuts. You use one push stick against the edge of the material, to push towards the fence. This is stationary, the material slides past this, like using a featherboard. The other long push stick pushes the stock through when needed. This way your hands are at least a foot away from the blade at all times. And not sure why so many woodworkers don't have decent blade guards on their table saw. If you have a top hung blade guard, with dust extraction, you can have the blade guard down most of the time, giving hand protection and dust extraction.
I'm am Incra fan, but their rules are NOT stainless steel. I live on coastal SC, and all eight of mine have rust here an their. often they are finger prints. Still, they are amazing! Regular use and a wipe down with oily trash resolves issue. After 3 years, the Incra TS/LS fence and its internal parts HAVE PROVED stainless or corrosion free.
The saddle T is definitely the tool I’m most interested in. I started getting pretty good with my speed square, but this looks interesting. The only think I wish it had was bigger holes to insert your pencil. I use a carpenters pencil most of the time
I picked up a Saddle T6 back in December (along with 2 other Woodpeckers tools) and I can honestly say, I absolutely LOVE my Saddle T6! It's much easier to use compared to measuring and marking lines, or even using a combination square. The biggest reason why I like it so much is the fact that it's coplanar. I never knew how often I needed to mark things like that before I started using my Saddle T6. Now I can't even imagine doing it without.
Thanks so much for this entire series of reviews. I have purchased a number of the items you've reviewed and found them to be well worth the price. The only item I was unhappy with is the Incra T-Rule. I could have lived with the fact that it is flimsy (I would be afraid to put it in a pocket lest it get bent). However, I tried marking with a number of different pencils and pens that were 0.5" and none of them would fit through the holes. The only thing that would get through was an X-acto knife blade, and even then it did not cut deep enough to make a useful line. Of course, if you just want to measure precise increments and mark with the side of the instrument, and/or measure router bit depth, it's just fine for that. But since my primary use case is marking, the tool just seems useless to me. As an alternative, I found an extraordinary set of sturdy T-Marking squares at a very good price at iGaging. It's a small business that makes great and reasonably priced products -- it's well worth supporting. If you haven't yet reviewed any of their tools, it would be great of you could have a look. I've had bad results using larger forstner bits handheld in my drill but I don't have a drill press so not much choice there. What is the largest forstner bit that can reasonably be used handheld in a drill?
Great tips, The only thing I don’t like about the incra rule is the the blade is so thin, like paper thin , your stock that you are measuring needs to be dead flat top and edge, and without splinters , knots and most defects, this blade being so thin along with all the perforations will catch and likely twist/ bend. Decent for layout on paper. That wood pecker is awesome though. Cheers Matt
The Pica pencils/markers are expensive, but well worth it IMHO. I like mine so much, I picked up a second set of each. The sleeve they use comes in so handy. You never loose the pencil in your pocket and have to go digging for it. I also have the Incra Tiny, as well as longer versions of it, the flat and edge rulers (all 12"). Very handy.
I have one of those Incra T's and one of their Protractors, had them for over 20 years and can honestly say that, I might have used them maybe once or twice.
why did you switch from the Pica to the bic during the saddle? Im assuming the pica is too thick for those holes, but assumptions ..... well we've all heard about those
Yo, slow down just a lil' bit there homeboyyy.... Mane you movin' through yo camera stuff so quick these days, I didn't realize at first that you were using a speed increase editing tool and so I thought you were really movin' that fast. Mane I tried to keep up, and instead of getting anything done I ended up knocking my table saw over, throwing a hammer through my neighbor's window, cutting 3 out of 4 of my shop's foundation beams in half, and I don't even know what happened. All I know is I tried to keep up with you in real-time homeboi tryna build some cool stuff and the next thing I remember was when my wife found me roaming through the woods with nothing on but a tool belt and a tape measure, 5 miles away from our house. Scared me mane. Anyways I enjoy your earlier videos, especially when you first started. You went through all of the building steps in a slow, well explained way, and you were able to convey every aspect of each step in a clear and concise way that made it very easy for pretty much anyone to understand. I can't do that now with only having your build plans to go off of when you are Speedy Gonzales'ing your way through everything quicker than the Roadrunner on illegal-grade strength Mountain Dew. -Big Daddy C

I do enjoy these ‘5 Tools’ videos, very informative. I really enjoyed the Forstner drill part as I hadn’t realised that the hole ‘drill’ was a totally different method of working. I would really love to buy that very nice box of drills but it will be way out of my pocket. Finally, I noticed you referred to the criticism as some ‘troll’ and that surprised me brother as the majority of criticism is not that at all. Negative feedback is the learning point, we can enjoy all the well done’s etc however it’s the ‘why didn’t you?’ ‘what was that about?’ that helps us learn. Now trolls don’t help and cruel, nasty and repeated comments aren’t helpful so are best ignored. But please ensure you aren’t missing a learning opportunity!? The rules are beautifully made. Inches? Fine. Fractions? Madness. Using 10ths, 100ths, etc makes calculations simple, and tolerances make sense. Fractions belong in the 1800s.
Imperil method is actually more accurate than metric. Especially when it comes to making things in any type of medium. Metric is easier with high-end mathematics. They both have their place.
@@jonlanier_ The measuring units used have no possible effect on accuracy. Achievable tolerances depend on the equipment and skills available, not on the units uses to measure them. 'both have their place'? Suggest a use-case where Imperial measures afford an advantage. BTW everything is made in some type of medium.
Does the colored lead from the Pica pencil come off the wood ok? I used a lead pencil on some pine the other day and had a dickens of a time getting it off before I used some clear poly.

I use the Paolini a lot more. It’s small, lightweight and more convenient. Although the saddle t is very handy to have. The incra is great because of the marking holes but because the blade is wider it’s less likely to be carried around.

You used a tool that wasnt listed. I want to know where ya got the tool that you used @ 11:03. That clicked and left a dimple in the wood. What is it and where did ya get it? Could have made the video about 6 tools hehe.
Only if it is a good sharp point. The .07 lead on the mechanical pencils won't fit in the smaller holes (1/64 ones). You would need a .05 or smaller I think.
C’mon. NONE of these are “essential“ for anything, ESPECIALLY the channel sponsor items Nice to have - sure. Good quality tools are always nice to have but I’ve been making a living woodworking for 50 yrs and none of these were in my shop in 1975, 1995, or 2015
I sorta said the same thing. This was about sponsorship... he needs to make an income off of it and I get that. Just wish he'd say that upfront. Something like tools that may make your woodworking experience better/easier. Although I have found going the more difficult route I've learned way more than with the easier route. And my skills are so much better.

My 2 pica have white and blue, I find them the best Color’s to see

Love those Pica pencils, get a few and the colored leads too. The incra pocket ruler is very handy too.

I have the Incra 6" and 150MM T rules. I love them. I am converting to metric. It is much easier to work with.

Hey does anyone know if the pica pencil works with the woodpecker square? Meaning is the lead point small enough to fit into those little holes?
I also love the Woodpecker tools and have all the Woodpecker tools you showed. 👍

They are nice to have and a good price for what you get
The rules are beautifully made. Inches? Fine. Fractions? Madness. Using 10ths, 100ths, etc makes calculations simple, and tolerances make sense. Fractions belong in the 1800s.
Imperil method is actually more accurate than metric. Especially when it comes to making things in any type of medium. Metric is easier with high-end mathematics. They both have their place.
@@jonlanier_ The measuring units used have no possible effect on accuracy. Achievable tolerances depend on the equipment and skills available, not on the units uses to measure them. 'both have their place'? Suggest a use-case where Imperial measures afford an advantage. BTW everything is made in some type of medium.
Does the colored lead from the Pica pencil come off the wood ok? I used a lead pencil on some pine the other day and had a dickens of a time getting it off before I used some clear poly.
Acetone will wipe pencil marks away
Great reviews on these handy-dandy tools!! I have to laugh though because in your example of using the Woodpecker ruler you reverted back to your old style pencil instead of Pica Pencil (snicker...at the 7:31 mark) . LOL

How does it compare, as far as usefulness in the shop, to the Paolini rule which it looked like you also had?
I use the Paolini a lot more. It’s small, lightweight and more convenient. Although the saddle t is very handy to have. The incra is great because of the marking holes but because the blade is wider it’s less likely to be carried around.

You recommend us the Pica Pencil and then use a regular mechanical pencil in the next part of the video lol. Just giving you a hard time. I actually just bought a Pica Pencil this weekend! Love your videos.

Do the PICA pencil tips fit in the holes on the incra marking tool?
Only if it is a good sharp point. The .07 lead on the mechanical pencils won't fit in the smaller holes (1/64 ones). You would need a .05 or smaller I think.

C’mon. NONE of these are “essential“ for anything, ESPECIALLY the channel sponsor items Nice to have - sure. Good quality tools are always nice to have but I’ve been making a living woodworking for 50 yrs and none of these were in my shop in 1975, 1995, or 2015
I sorta said the same thing. This was about sponsorship... he needs to make an income off of it and I get that. Just wish he'd say that upfront. Something like tools that may make your woodworking experience better/easier. Although I have found going the more difficult route I've learned way more than with the easier route. And my skills are so much better.
