  • The video emphasizes the benefits of choosing early-ripening fig varieties, especially for regions with shorter growing seasons. It highlights specific examples like Ronde Bordeaux and LSU Hollier, which produce early main crops, and explains how to identify early ripening figs by examining the formation of fruits on the branches.
To help you choose the fig variety for you, I've created a detailed list of early-ripening fig varieties. Check out my guide on the Fig Boss blog here: www.figboss.co...

My fig season has officially started in Z9B. Had some decent breba a few weeks back but had three varieties of main crop ( black celeste, Saint Rita and RDB ) starting June 12th. Others are swollen and starting to blush. Pleasantly surprising as these trees were all started from cuttings in may of last year and are all over 4’ tall and loaded. My I258 among others is almost 6’ tall with hundreds of figs of various sizes. I’m so glad my wife pushed me to add figs to my orchard. I had no idea there were so many options. All I had ever had was Southern Brown Turkey.

My 2nd year Ronde de Bordeaux set and ripened 5 Breba by June 1 here in Bay Area 9B. Like VdB they were almost as tasty as main crop

Hey Ross, I live in Kentucky and it seems like everybody here allows their fig trees to die down to the ground and covers their roots with leaf mulch in the winter.
What is the variety of fig tree across from Geno’s Cheesesteak in Philly? It’s in an enclosed compound and it looks winter-hardy. It was at least 9 feet tall when I saw it. Definitely not trimmed down for the winter.

Hey Ross, quick question. Say, I want a straight trunk but also nice branching/scaffolds at certain points of the trunk. Do fig trees develop a new apical bud next season at the point where I removed the „old“ apical bud? In other words. Can I stop the straight lined growth for a season and let it continue next season from a newly formed tip in the same direction in a straight line to form a straight trunk?
    Thanks as always!

I'm not sure if they all do. Regardless, it's an incredible variety. Truthfully, I believe they failed at improving it.
