  • Because I didn't record making the back supports... I just explain whats going on and what happened when I used the plow. Also talk about what I'm going to do to it next.

Steel from a hot water heater is plenty strong for a blade. The bracing in the back is what gives it the strength you will need so it won't bend when plowing deep snow. I made four vertical ribs on mine and used 2" heavy wall square stock across the back for rigidity and strength. Then I'm using 4" flat stock (1/2" thick) for the cutting edge. That gives it a lot of strength across the bottom, where you need it most. The attachment arms to my truck are also heavy duty 2" angle iron in a triangle shape with a 3/4" pivot pin, which has held up well for the past 10 years. Mines is still a manual pivot, so I have to get out and angle the blade by hand. I'm now fabricating an old tongue screw jack with a wiper motor attached to it so I can pivot the blade from inside with a switch. It will work like a hydraulic cylinder to angle the blade electrically. I've plowed a lot of snow for not much money invested! Go for it!

Our local city plow trucks have a thick piece of rubber on the bottom of the blade. about 1" thick 8" wide and run the length of the blade. not sure how much actually hangs below the blade but it's rigid enough to handle removing the snow but gives and flexes when ever it hits manhole covers of other hard fixed objects. I've been needing to build a plow for a few years and my water heater just went out. you gave me lots of useful information. Thanks.

I've used trampoline springs on some projects I built in the past they're very strong and have a good length on them you might want to check into some.

Found some springs on amazon for around 20$ each. I think I'm going to order them. My brother gave me some unused skids that he got for free. I'm pretty excited to finish this thing up.

Before you do that I would check with some of the equipment rental places and see if they have some. You might pick them up for a couple of dollars

I had kind of a retarded idea for one but I have to wait for amazon to ship new plasma tips to my house. Take an heating oil tank and cut out one of the curves, flip it around put some weight inside the tank and weld the curve back in. Then put weld some pad eyes on the tank and run a chain through the brush guard on my truck. The brush guard is the correct height to where I can push the tank around and having the chain just a little lose will allow it to pivot when pushing at an angle. I'm confident it will at least sort of work and my only costs will be welding rod and electricity running the welder and plasma cutter.

A lot of times you can find somebody that is throwing out a trampoline for free on craigslist.

I'm still debating if I am going to use springs or not, but certainly no stranger to getting free stuff. HAHA its a disease! Thanks for watching!
