What Next For The Unfixable Ferrari? A New Plan For the InfluEnzo [Ferrari 308 GTS]

  • My Ferrari 308 finally goes to it's new home and I reveal a plan to fix it once and for all! There are still engine problems that mean I will probably have to rebuild it again but all is not yet certain, there is also a possibility Ferrari themselves will get involved.

I think it would be more interesting and more fruitful to take the engine out, completely take it apart, analyse all the parts and rebuild with new rings and seals in a nice warm garage. Engine teardowns get very good views.

@Number 27, can't wait until you get back to your InfluEnzo again. I've been waiting for this moment for a while now. Glad you finally found a new house with a bigger garage. If you own the property next to the garage, you could always expand it into three cars garage.

Back when I was getting my first cars ( mostly bad decisions) there was an old guy down the road with a 308. He did all the work himself in his driveway. He was always enthusiastic about whatever I dragged home. Keep up the great work and enjoy the garage space.

Jack. That is THE car that brought me to your channel. So gorgeous. My favourite car of all time. My bro has an anoymous 'looks like every other windtunnel designed fast car McBurger 540c. Boring and soulless IMHO. This 308 is flawed yes, but soooo pretty. Hope you have more issues ( selfish reason only). Then you'll have to keep it and we'll see more of it!!!!! You'll love having all that natural light in the garage. When we built ours my wife suggested adding a couple of skylights and it's amazing what a difference it makes. Another thing you'll learn is that a garage is never big enough!! Cheers, Ian.

There was a 'law' that isn't really a law (a bit like Murphy's law) about space - I can't remember the name of it, but essentially it says that however much space you have (not just in garages) you'll fill whatever is available and then get stuck!
I dunno if you watch Harry's garage, but he's a farmer and has a bloody great barn dedicated to housing his (fairly astonishing) car/motorcycle collection and he has filled that up to the point he has adopted a one-in one-out policy, forcing himself to pick a vehicle that has to go before allowing himself to buy another! So you're quite right, a garage is never big enough - even when it's a barn!

I've always liked the 308/328 Ferrari ever since seeing one on Magnum P.I. Iv'e watched your journey with this car and it's been informative and entertaining. I love all Italian vehicles, I think they have a distinctive style which is unsurpassed in my opinion. What I've found is that no matter how big or how many garages you have, you'll always find more toys to put in them. Forza Italia, keep up the good work, saluti from Cardiff.

Prior to rebuilding that old engine, you may get a reprieve by investing in, SPARK PLUG NON-FOUL ADAPTERS. These adaptors will largely prevent the plugs from fouling that you're experiencing.

What a journey! I bought a 20 year garaged non running 84 Lotus Esprit. Been over a year, 2 different mechanics and will be double what I expected to pay to get it running. Props to you for doing it yourself! I’ve bought and sold many cars and for sure I saved money when spending more upfront buying a car that was already done versus restoring them.

If it isn't the top end, it is either failed rings (broken, etc) or scored cylinder walls, perhaps glazed cylinder walls. If it is glazed cylinder walls, I have had great success with Bon Ami Powder Cleanser. Yup, you read that right, In North America, this is a common kitchen cleaner and is a mildly abrasive cleaning powder. You should be able to purchase this or similar in the UK. With the engine running, sprinkle a small amount of powder into each carb. DO NOT allow the engine to stall. Do this for 5-10 minutes, all while the engine is running (expect to put 1/4 cup of powdered Bon Ami down each carb), then use a can of brake clean to flush each carb. DO NOT allow the engine to stall. Once done, shut off the engine and change the oil. After the 1st oil change, run the engine for 10 minutes revving between idle and 2000rpm. Shut off engine and change oil for the 2nd time. Drive the car for 500 miles then change the oil for the 3rd and final time. Hopefully oil consumption has been improved. If not, you have lost nothing except 3 oil changes. 😊

Jack, have you performed a pressure test on each cylinder? Pressurising the cylinder causes air to leak through the cause of the problem. If it’s the inlet valves, the air will leak back through the inlet manifold. If it’s the exhaust valves, the air will leak back through the exhaust manifold. If it’s the pistons or rings, the air will leak back through the sump.
The possible actual source of the oil leaking into the cylinders, is the valve guides or seals.
Take up any free offers from Ferrari. Well worth it.
    Good luck mate

In my case, it took 11 years of regular use before I perfected to layout and organization of my garage. Enjoy the journey. it can only be the valve stem seals, blow-by due to worn piston rings or blocked crankcase breather. check all the crankcase breather vents/hoses

    • @dalemanolas5994
      @dalemanolas5994 2 роки тому +2

If it was the rings then I'd honestly expect the car to be blowing smoke under load. Also it would lack power and a compression test would pick up the problem.. Smokey at idle screams that high vacuum is pulling oil in around the valve stems or through a breather. The valve stem seals in this car are new but they might have sat on the shelf too long and gone hard. I'd be trying valve stem seal conditioner and also checking (or disconnecting) breather hoses just as you say.

Great to hear the Ferrari V8 again. And glad to see it making you smile. The new garage will be a dream to work in...change your life. My one thought is that I just don't remember you ever talking about Influenzo burning oil until after all the work with the head(s). Certainly some piston rings could have died...but I would think you would see a gradual increase in oil consumption. I still suspect the valve job since that seem to immediately precede the oil burning. An engine out tear down seems extreme barring any definitive diagnosis. And it will be expensive entertainment. Do you have compression tests from before and after the head work?

I know you want it to be something else (I did too with my Alfa back in the 90’s), but it’s going to be the rings. If it was the valves/guides you’d get loads of blue smoke on a cold start due to oil slowly leaking down past the guides into the intake runners and chambers over night. Another test for guides is to run it up to 7000rpm in 2nd, let off the throttle and let it wind down 2000rpm, then pin the throttle and look out the rear window. If it looks like a Bond style smoke screen it’s the guides, which it won’t be. Sorry, I know it’s not something you want to hear…

We always forgive the foibles of the pretty ones! Glad a drive has reignited the passion. Sometimes when my Citroën 2CV sits in the garage too long, I start thinking about selling it. Then I take it out for a good drive, and that promptly dispells such notions.

I had a 78, 308, Spider and really miss her. It was a great car. I had a 348, and a 1999 Modena and their all different. The 308, I was its 3rd owner but I owned it for 12 years and still miss her very much. Hold on if you can & if you get help from Ferrari that’s even better.

oil control rings arent supposed to prevent oil going up into the combustion chamber, they are for pulling oil up with the piston to coat the cylinder walls. the compression rings prevent the oil getting to the combustion chamber

I’ve heard contradicting views on that though looking at the design it would definitely make sense

    • @Gruxxan

@@Number27 yes, oil gets trapped within the corrugated 'cells' and drawn upwards, coating the walls as the piston goes up. each time the piston gets to bottom dead centre, the cells are replenished with oil (from the inside, thats why there are little holes in the oil control ring slot, they are for oil to pass through)

@@Gruxxan Correct, also basically over time and use, and a couple of possible overheating events, the rings lose tension, oil scraper and so forth...Looks like its time for a freshen up.....

Hello Jack, I am so pleased to hear that Ferrari is interested in your car. Thats very classy of them and it shows that they respect their owners regardless of the model-year of the car. I hope it all goes well and of course.........I love your videos. Thanks Mate.

Might I suggest watching the last few videos of Normal Guy Super Car as Dan et Al strip and fully rebuild a 355 engine? (Though you probably have been doing so already!)
