I know it’s not repairable but the way that Apple Pencil is designed is incredible. How the heck did they fit all that tech in there and make it mass manufacturable.
making a fully repairable pen would make the product objectively worse but they definitely should’ve added a way to change the battery when it starts to wear out or use a capacitor which don’t really degrade overtime and almost charge instantly, but they have much lower energy density
And basically necessary. Pretty much no digital Pencil like this is repairable AT ALL. Being it the S Pen (and its thousand variants) or pens from Wacom and such. There is just no wanton built those in a way to repair them. There isn't space for that
I wonder what would happen if you would only connect one of the tandem OLED screens. Would be fun to see under the microscope which of them is functioning, the top one or the bottom one.

I had an Apple Pencil gen 1 that sat in the box for a while (over a year) between purchase and finally using it. When I tried to use it, the battery was completely dead and wouldn't charge at all. It was very frustrating having to buy a new one.

Eh honestly that has good utility, it means you can just hotswap rechargeable AAAAs so you never need to wait for the thing to charge. great for professionals who might need to use the thing for 9+ hours a day.
The Apple Pencil having still a Taptic Engine that has the label inside, besides the fact that practically no one is going to see it is insane. Glad Steve's philosophy still lives on.
One thing you gotta give apple credit for is that even tho they hate people opening up their devices, it always looks super clean once you get inside. Idk why they do that if nobody's gonna see it. But it's cool
All Apple devices internally look like artwork and it’s amazing the time / effort / money put into the manufacturing of these devices. This is also why these devices are never cheap and nothing out there comes close from any other manufacturers.

Not all of us want tech to be disposable and needlessly polluting. Companies improving repairability doesn't negatively affect you at all so I can't say I understand this comment as anything other than trolling. Why else are you wasting your time on iFixIt content if repairability is such an affront to your worldview? PS. I'm not sure that you understand what backwards compatibility is.
The best way Apple allows consumers to 'reduce their carbon footprint' is by making devices & software that are as good to use 5-6 years down the road as they were when you bought them.
Should be but it won't since Apple had to basically force, Samsung and LG which make most OLED TV's to make this, tandem OLED. Told them current OLED they using in TV not good enuf i.e. burn in, saturation and peak brightness being biggest issues. Definitely has to be most expensive part this iPad since basically sandwhich 2 OLED panels together. No way they could scale that up to 65" TV sizes.
While I understand the difficulties in making small electronics like earbuds repairable, the pencil still seems like something you could pretty easily have a battery at the top that could just slide out. I'm sure there are balance considerations or power distribution issues, but it feels like something that needs to happen.
It does not a replaceable battery - are going back to the AA and AAA battery days are we? This would also make the device larger and the cost of the battery would be at least 50% of the device, so where’s the economical advantage?
Its crazy. Last night I put a new battery in a 10 year old Kindle Paperwhite and had it running again, then I did a flashmod upgrade and case and battery replacement on an iPod. Within 10 years we went from being able to replace parts for kit that would last decades to spending $1000 to rent/lease e-waste.
That’s where the display controller goes, it is connected to the screen and so leaves a space when the screen is removed. You can just about see it when the screen is being taken off at 0:57.

What's the point of repairability score or repair time, everything is serialized it gets zero , i think ease of disassembly is termed as repairability in this video.

The fancy shadow thing they did with the pen almost overshadowed my concerns for practicality, but this brought me back to my senses. The new ipads and pens have their place, but apparently, that's not with me yet. I'm not in a position to treat my electronics as disposable.

Great job as always, guys! Happy to see some progress from Apple, the battery should be even easier to repair that what they have but this is miles ahead of previous gens. I understand that specially tablets are not computers and (most) ppl don't expect them to last for like 10 years, but batteries specially die far quicker than that, specially on a 1 day device. I hope the next gen is even better, having to heat glue just to replace a battery seems excessive for ordinary people and counter productive for technicians. But again, great job from iFixit!

Any idea what the cellular modem model is in the 5G versions? Hopefully it’s the Qualcomm X70, although it’d be lovely if they leapfrogged the iPhone by going straight to the X75 instead.
iFixit has a much more careful teardown with a greater purpose. I wonder if Apple could make a two part Pencil with a screw in battery side, not sure how pretty it would look as they want a seamless design and I guess it would make it a three part design if we include the nib.

The battery (batteries) are smaller than I thought. Look for some M4-based Macbooks to offer 24 hour battery life.

During regular use, your pencil will rarely drain more than 10%. The battery in the pencil far outlives the useful life of the device.

It's apple that makes and supplies the boards to ifixt, they ara just distributors.
